Lt. Colonel David Glassman and Publisher of ‘AHERO' explains his plan of care and concern for our injured veterans. AHERO deescalates the veteran's personal crisis in their time of need. David and I discussed veteran trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, homelessness, America's lack of care and concern for the veteran, and a transition plan from the battlefield back to American life. 76% of our veterans have a problem transitioning to civilian life. This organization is saving lives by defeating suicide through their relationship building plan. AHERO is a conduit for those veterans returning home. These issues impact over 9 million returning veterans. Organizations like AHERO offer that solution. Charles Kniffen served in the US Marines, was wounded in Vietnam, and has used writing and communion with nature as a mean to cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. In his second Sunbury Press work, Kniffen takes the reader through a world very different from the camaraderie of a military unit. Speaking with host Lawrence Knorr, Kniffen pulls no punches about his experiences, social concerns and fear of betrayal, which lead to his getting in touch with himself, with the help of the animal world. Kniffen's recollections of contact with animals, wild and domestic bring the reader closer in "Rude Awakenings: Making Peace with the Beast Machine." Self-described as a lifelong blue-collar essential worker, Charles Kniffen lists authors such as William Meredith, Jon Anderson and Michael R. Brown as his influences. He is also the author of "50 Years in a Foxhole." He lives in Lubec, Maine.
When people of a certain age (like me) think of the term Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, the mind jumps to the horrors face by Vietnam Vets as they struggle to deal with post-war life. Night after night of terrorizing nightmares forces them to relive their cruel and stressful daytime experiences. But PTSD can be felt by anyone who's faced an unthinkable ordeal, such as rape, assault or other crimes or people like first responders and health workers who face day-in, day-out stress. In recent years, one of the more effective treatments for PTSD has been dreamwork. We discuss this with psychotherapist and dream expert Linda Yael Schiller, who treats those dealing with trauma by helping them work through their nightmares. The result often leads to a new outlook: Post Traumatic Growth. Her new book, PTS Dreams: Transforn Your Nightmares fro Trauma through Healing Dreamwork documents this process. As Linda tells us:•There's a difference between acute and chronic nightmares•Why the emotion is critical to understanding nightmares•What you can learn from your nightmares•Why she believes we all have the power to heal•Understanding the PARDES system of dreamwork•Why its important to create a safe space for working with traumatic nightmares•How to move from PTSD to PTS GrowthIf you know someone who has debilitating nightmares or you have them yourself, you won't want to miss this powerful episode of Dream Power Radio. Linda Yael Schiller, MSW, LICSW, (Watertown, MA) is a mind-body and spiritual psychotherapist, consultant, author, and international teacher. Linda facilitates group dream circles, provides individual, group, and corporate consultation, and trains professionals on working with dreams. She has designed several innovative methods for dreamwork. Linda is trained in numerous mind-body methods such as EMDR, EFT, energy psychology, Enneagram, and integrated trauma treatments. In addition to her professional work with dreams, she has been involved with her own dream-sharing group for more than thirty years. Mary Constance is an adoptee from Ohio. Mary is preparing to walk across America to bring attention to the inequity faced by adoptees in seeking access to our original birth certificates. Mentioned in the show: Ohio adoptee access to records: https://odh.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odh/know-our-programs/vital-statistics/Adoption-File-Information/Adoption-File-Information The Chosen Baby: a pro-adoption childrens books by Valentina P Wasson, designed to help adoptive parents explain adoption to adopted children. ACOA: Adult Children of Alcoholics. adultchildren.org A support group for adult children of alcoholics Generational Trauma: a fairly new field that explores trauma passed from one generation to another. Also known as intergenerational trauma and transgenerational trauma Life Gap: a term created by an adoptee to refer to the time between birth and adoption, where few if any records are available to adoptees. Many of us deeply feel the absence of this information, of a time when we were cared for in an institutional or foster care situation. ACE: Adverse Childhood Experience. While Adverse Childhood Experiences have long been acknowledged as a source of lasting trauma, few measures include being given up for adoption as a trauma. The closest many assessments come is to have losing a family member on the list of recognized trauma. PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, is characterized by sleep disturbance, intrusive thoughts, anxiety and depression. A persons nervous system is often stuck in high gear, causing a person to be hyper alert at all times. Or, they may find themselves in flight, freeze or fawn. Therapy can be very helpful. Many people find EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure Therapy helpful. Agoraphobia: an anxiety disorder that causes a person to be fearful of places where they feel they can't escape. This may cause people to stay only in places where they feel secure, like home. Therapy can be very helpful. Mental Health Resources: If you have health insurance, you can contact your provider to find information about the services available to you. If you do not have insurance, you can contact www.nami.org for information about resources, or contact your local department of health. If you are a student, your school may offer services. Mental health services can be difficult to locate, though there are now online therapists who can be helpful. Always check if a provider is licensed, and ask if they will provide services on a sliding scale. Some Womens health clinics offer sliding scale mental health services to women and children. Sarah Bohachyk is a Registered Nurse in Alberta Canada and has worked in the Emergency Department for over 10 years. She is also completing her Masters of Nursing Degree through Athabasca University. In 2016 Sarah started experiencing symptoms of trauma, and in 2019 she experienced another traumatic injury at work that triggered Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, leaving her unable to work, and at times barely managing day to day living. She has been off work for most of 2020 due to her PTSD injury and the lengthy recovery and healing process of trauma and she is now looking to improve the lives of other nurses who are also struggling. Sarah has teamed up with other nurses to start the Nurse to Nurse Peer Support Organization, hoping to have it's approval for non-profit status in the very near future. They are supporting nurses via online meetings and support in an effort to bridge the gap in the services offered and provided to nurses who are suffering with mental health injury. Over 2018 to 2019 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) designated psilocybin (one of key ingredients in psychoactive mushrooms) and MDMA (one of the key ingredients in ecstasy) with “breakthrough status” given the huge promise they've both shown in the first stages of clinical trials. Psilocybin showed incredible promise for Major Depressive Disorder (something affecting up to 15% of people living in developed countries at some point in their life). MDMA showed significant promise for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. One of the most curious things about the proposed therapies are that they're once-off or just a few dosed sessions that could cause lifelong changes unlike existing antidepressant medication. The proposal is that the substances are to be taken under supervision of a trained mental health professional and this is where Dr. Alana Roy and Mind Medicine Australia come in. Mind Medicine Australia believe that Australia should be taking advantage of the completed body of science and take lessons from the US to move forward to having similar therapies legally offered in Australia. Check out and share this 2 minute animation to find out why psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy needs to be available to those who are suffering. To better understand how these medicines offer promise in treating mental illness, please visit our website and https://mindmedicineaustralia.org/psychological-support-services/ Please also read https://mindmedicineaustralia.org/important-resources/ Mind Medicine Australia relies on tax-deductible donations to create a pathway for the regulatory approval of medicine-assisted therapies. We invite you to donate HERE. Future research in Australia is on the way. If you would like to be kept aware of when such research is announced, and whether you may qualify for inclusion, please follow us on facebook, twitter and join our mailing list and attend our next educational events. There are some ways to stay in touch and become involved in the meantime. Dr Alana Roy (Ph. D Psychology, B. A Social Work (MHSW)) National Practice Manager Psychological Services Dr Alana Roy is a psychologist, social worker and therapist and has spent the last 13 years working in mental health, suicide prevention, trauma, sexual abuse and family violence and the disability sector. Tonight's special guest is Danny Jackson from Orlando, Florida, a professional, the Senior Hypnotherapist at the Orlando Hypnosis Clinic. In his work, Danny helps people every day through the feelings of abuse or neglect that they experienced as children .. issues that are interfering with, and in some cases, destroying their lives today. "It's truly rewarding work," Danny says. “I had been working with clients as a substance abuse counselor for years, and after that amount of time it was becoming disheartening to see clients I had worked with for months and months in group sessions, individual & family counseling sessions returning 8 – 18 months later to go through these programs again! That started the process of looking for a solution that worked more effectively, which is what brought me to doing the work I’m doing today. As a Certified Hypnotist / Hypnotherapist, Counselor, and EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy) practitioner, I have spent the majority of the past 15 years working with clients suffering from addiction and dependence on a variety of substances of abuse. I have had the good fortune to work with several Mental Health Professionals over the years, and to help their clients through hypnosis & hypnotherapy in areas as diverse as Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, ADD / ADHD, and Schizophrenia to name a few. The most significant praise I receive comes from the clients themselves once they experience freedom from the negative thoughts and emotions they have been battling for years, sometimes decades.”
Get to know one of the Nations’ 9th of Av Jewish Partners, Ruth Guggenheim of Emunah Israel and Emunah Angels! Ruth was an evening speaker at Nations’ 9th of av conference last year in Jerusalem. It was at the conference that the “seed” for an idea and vision was first launched: “Emunah Angels”, a new branch of World Emunah, where Christians can connect with the Emunah family in Israel. We are saying, “Come and be a part of the Emunah family”. But we also are saying “We want to be a part of your family also.” We realized one of the things we could offer and share is the beauty of the Jewish Challah bake. Listen in to find out more about this exciting new project! Ruth also shares about the Emunah Counseling Center based in Sderot and the tremendous impact they are having on the residents of Sderot, who live only 1 mile from the Gaza border. Sderot residents only have 15 seconds to get to a bomb shelter when the alarm goes off. Many of the Sderot residents suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The Emunah Counseling Center provides 24/7 crisis services, therapy and counseling to cope with the situation in Sderot. There will be a counselor from the Emunah Counseling Center who will be speaking at the Nations’ 9th of Av conference this coming summer. It is a serious, and costly, public health problem. If the trials are successful, MDMA, which has its critics, could become commercially available as a medically prescribed treatment by 2021. The trials are being funded by a nonprofit organization, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), which promotes careful and beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana. Climbing Mount Everest is one of the biggest challenges facing mountain climbers. With 100 mile per hour winds, below freezing temperatures, this is a challenge not many people want to face. It's a challenge that most people could not face.To bring awareness of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) to the public, a group of American veterans created U.S. Expeditions and Explorations USX (@TeamUSX) non-profit organization. Command Sergeant Major Todd Burnett (retired) co-founder of the organization provides an update on Late Night Health. The organization is designed to help soldiers and other members of the military combat PTSD. The staggering fact is more military personnel have died from suicide due to PTSD than have died in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. The climbing team consists of both active duty military personal as well as veterans who volunteered to bring this issue to the American people. On the team is retired Staff Sergeant Chad Jukes, who lost his right leg while serving as the lead gun truck commander on a supply convoy in northern Iraq.In the last few weeks a friend of Burnett ended his life due to the stress of PTSD. Burnett is continuing USX to save the life of the next veteran who feels his life is on the edge. PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by terrifying events with symptoms lasting months or even years later that interfere with quality of life, and can increase suicide risk if not addressed properly. On a happy note, one of the climbers, 1st Lieutenant Elyse Ping Medvigy was promoted to Captain on the climb. This is believed to be the first military promotion on Mount Everest.Americans on both sides of the isle salute the members of the team and thank them for their tours of duty. You may know Bonnie Gray as the creator and writer behind FaithBarista.com, an interactive website designed to help women heal by telling their stories. Gray is a graduate of UCLA and is a passionate writer who has also been a missionary and high-tech professional in Silicon Valley. Above all, and relevant to her triumph in writing Finding Spiritual Whitespace: Awakening Your Soul to Rest, is Gray’s unique ability to connect women with their own stories in a powerful and healing way.Throughout the book, Gray’s own painful story unfolds. She writes unflinchingly about her childhood marred by parental emotional abuse and divorce, and how she recognized the need as an adult to seek help for Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The core of this powerful book is the manner in which she emerged from her PTSD to face her past and live in the present. The resulting story could stand alone as a parable of forgiveness. But Gray goes much further to give her readers the real and transformative gift of a structured and meditative approach to healing past emotional wounds. The process she has created has the power to help those being healed to emerge as what Henri Nouwen called a “wounded healer” – those who recognize and heal their own wounds so that they are able to help others heal. The image behind the book is that of “white space,” that area around a work of art that frames it so we can clearly see what the artist intended. White space helps the viewer focus on the art being presented without being distracted by surrounding clutter. By analogy, Gray uses the artistic device of white space to help her readers clear away the clutter of their own past to see the beauty intended by their creator. The point behind all of this is that the reader is herself a work of art, worthy of white space, worthy to be seen clearly in her full beauty. This is powerful stuff in a world where women are often implicitly if not directly told to suffer silently and to project a false and commercial beauty. One small criticism of the book is that, ironically, it seems at first a bit cluttered. There are several major sections in each chapter, including Gray’s unfolding childhood story, highlights from her therapy to heal her PTSD, and some exercises for the reader to work though her own healing; however, this structure is not at first completely clear. Stick with it, though, and the flow of the book will begin to make sense. Once it does, you will be rewarded. If you are willing to devote time and honest energy to your own “white space,” to let your God-given beauty emerge, you will grow from the stories and exercises in this book. Although this book is intended for women, there are many applications for men as well. Anyone with a painful past in search of healing will benefit from Finding Spiritual Whitespace. According to the National Institute of Mental Health about 1 in 30 adults in the U.S. suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in a given year. Those with PTSD suffer persistent fear, flashbacks, hyper vigilance, and more. Though PTSD is largely recognized in war veterans, many different people who have survived traumatic events, such as rape, abuse, or natural disasters, can be impacted by long-term psychological symptoms too. It is usually triggered by a fearful, helpless, or horrific event that threatens injury to one's self, or the witnessing of these types of traumatic events that happen to others. My special guest for today's show is Author Dan L. Hays, a man who has first-hand knowledge of this paralyzing disorder.
