Mistakes can sometimes feel like you're getting further away from your goals. Yet, that is far from true. Failure is meant to spark spiritual transformation that can help you manifest your deepest desires. Join us for a conversation about welcoming mistakes into your life to create meaningful change.“Envision the blessings you want in life with the understanding that they are waiting for you. The version of yourself that you are in now is not ready to receive them. You have to become a more evolved version of yourself in order to manifest those blessings. That understanding can drive your desire to change and allow you to embrace your failures.” – Michael Berg Further Readings:The Right Kind of Wrong: The Science of Failing Well, by Amy C. Stacey's journey is a reminder that asking for help and embracing failure can lead to unforeseen beauty. So, tune in for actionable advice on business growth and self-improvement. Remember, every failure is a stepping stone to success!Episode Highlights:06:04 - The business was successful. This is the biggest thing I learned, it didn't have a sustainable way of filling that prospect pipeline. There was always feast or famine. There was always the entrepreneurial roller coaster of the highs and lows of like, "Hey, I've got a client. Yay, I'm doing something for the bank. Let me put my head down and do the work." And then look up and be like, "Oh, snap, the work is done and there's not another client." Except for I kept saying, "Oh, snap, the work is done and there's not another client" for four years, for over four years. Just didn't ever figure out that prospecting piece, that filling of the prospect into the pipeline piece.11:51 - When we ask people for referrals, we're actually violating the science, which is why people run away from us when they see us coming at networking groups. Like, "Oh, I don't want to be that person." And when we just wait for it to happen, we're using hope as a strategy. Hope is a beautiful thing, but it is not a business strategy. And so these things we've been told, they violate the science behind what makes referrals actually happen, and it was just me figuring it out and uncovering that. And to be honest, it was over time that I was teaching it to my clients, that I was like, "Oh, yes, that is working." It's not a fluke. It's not my personality. It's not that this just works for business coaches. It's not that this just works for extroverts who have as much energy as I have. It's not about being female. It's not about being younger. I like to think of myself as younger and probably considered older, but whatever. It's not about those pieces to generate referrals. And so, when I could eliminate all the things that made it about me, and then I could have people who are very different from me in very different industries with different genders, and different extroverts versus introverts, and it worked for all of them, then I was like, "Okay, it's just a strategy." And that's what we need to understand and deploy. But it's got to be rooted in all the ways that referrals actually happen.22:04 - Any of the applications for people to work with me, they have to tell me, "How did you hear about Stacey?" It's a standard question that's required. And sometimes they don't know, and so we take, "I don't know." That's fine, but you should be asking those questions through your processes. Or just when you're in that first conversation with a prospect, you could be like, "Hey, by the way, I don't think I know this, but how did you hear about me?" It's a simple question. Most people kind of expect it, but tracking it should be super simple. So, we're talking about four columns in an Excel spreadsheet or a Google spreadsheet. What I'm looking for is the date. I think it's important that you track the date. Now, one of the reasons why I tell my folks to track the date that that prospect entered...

David Hollenbach has walked through the fire. Now, he helps others fan the flames of their own self-compassion and rise from the ashes of their limiting beliefs. David Hollenbach is a retired Fire Department Battalion Chief, an international best-selling author, professional speaker, member of the National Speakers Association, John Maxwell certified speaker and DISC Method Trainer. His most recent book, Fireproof: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future was released in 2022. David owns and operates David Hollenbach Consulting, LLC and hosts the popular podcast From Embers to Excellence - with over 170+ episodes featuring inspiring guest speakers. His brand was built on the foundation of helping others, speaking up and creating a legacy of good. Additionally, David is a Veteran of the United States Navy with a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Barry University. A major focus of research for his capstone was how strong, positive leadership can influence the culture of a large organization. While studying at Barry University he published "The Firefighter's Creed" and “Women in the Fire Service: A Diverse Culture Leads to a Successful Culture,” an article highlighting the importance of gender diversity within the fire service in Fire Engineering Magazine. He has spent years as an instructor, coach and mentor helping others define and realize their personal goals. There is strength in adversity David Hollenbach had read about trauma and studied philosophy. But during his time in the fire service, he experienced it for the first time - and it nearly broke him. Like many who work in emotionally difficult careers, David saw horrific things during his time in the fire department. He struggled with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and even considered taking his own life. In this deeply moving episode of The Business of You, David authentically shares his personal story with us, reminding us that we are not alone. During the depths of his despair, David reached inside himself and found a spark - committing fully to his own healing, no matter what. He began to do meaningful and consistent work on his emotional and mental health. Now, he encourages other veterans and service members to do the same, paving a path for them to speak up and talk about their experiences. Breaking the code of silence, David reminds us that our value is found not just in what we do, but in who we are… and our intrinsic self-worth. Uncover your core values As a coach and mentor, David Hollenbach helps leaders create a grand strategy for their lives. He believes strongly that without direction, we will never arrive where we want to go, or become the person we're meant to be. This begins with discovering your core values. Through his coaching and speaking services, David helps others create a roadmap for their lives. Despite their failures, regardless of where they are, he teaches others to rediscover their passion for life and reconnect with the best parts of themselves. Forging a better future When David was working on himself, he finally discovered a term that he had been seeking to define for years: Emotional intelligence. Studying emotional intelligence, he noticed that women consistently received much higher emotional intelligence scores than men. That explained why the fire service, notoriously lacking women, was an industry with room for improvement in emotional intelligence and communication. But it also explained why women weren't joining the fire service - and certainly weren't being retained. Even when women become firefighters, they frequently leave for careers in which their emotional intelligence, skills and abilities are more highly valued. Now, David writes and speaks about opportunities for better gender equality in service careers, and what that could mean for improving outcomes. Quotes “I really try to help veterans and first responders with PTSD. I had my own struggles.” “People who spend their adult life who spend their adult life in fields like combat, law enforcement, EMS, and the fire department - you end up seeing horrible things. If you don't deal with and process that, it can fester and lead to PTSD.” “I went to a really dark place. I hadn't accepted that I was as bad as I was. It wasn't until I almost took my own life, in the moments and days after that experience, that I committed to myself that I would do everything that I could to heal and become the person I knew I could become - someone my daughter could be proud of.” “I felt like - nobody's gonna read this. Who am I to write a book? I came very close to deleting the entire thing. Then I realized that sharing the lessons I learned could help somebody avoid taking their own life.” “Ultimately, I believe that we're all seeking the same thing: Happiness, a sense of fulfillment - and one of the purest forms of fulfillment comes from helping others succeed. If you can, find your purpose helping others succeed by doing the things you're gifted at.” “The fire service is lagging behind even every male-dominated industry in the United States. Paid firefighters - in 2010, the workforce was 3.7% female, and other occupations that were similar had 17% females or higher. Ten years later in the 2020 census, they achieved success in bringing it up to 4.7%. The work needs to be done on the culture so that it's more inclusive.” “While the fire service is hiring more women, they're not retaining them. Most women may do 6-10 years but ultimately they'll leave for a career where their skills and experience are valued to a higher degree. You can't fault anybody for that!” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit David Hollenbach's website at https://hollenbachleadership.com/ Follow Hollenbach Leadership on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/hollenbachleadership Connect with David Hollenbach on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/dave-hollenbach-author-speaker/ Find David on Twitter at https://twitter.com/HollenbachLEAD Listen to the Hollenbach Leadership podcast at https://hollenbachleadership.com/from-embers-to-excellence-podcast If you or someone you love are considering self-harm or you find yourself struggling with your mental health, you are loved - and you are never alone. “You're supposed to be the person that shows up and makes things better, and it's pretty hard to make things better if you're struggling yourself.” – Chief DavidFirst responders' coping mechanisms are often instituted over years of service, with each call serving as another brick in the wall they build to divide the life-changing trauma they've witnessed from their ability to work their next shift and operate in the normalcy of life outside the station walls. When there is a culture that prevents open discussions around the job they do and the impact it has, first responders can become further entrenched in behaviors that attempt to deny or conceal mental health issues like PTSD. Join former paramedic/firefighter and host Phil Klein for the final episode of season four with David, a Navy veteran and retired battalion chief who spent 23 years in the fire service. David shares how following in his father's footsteps led him down his chosen career path, how losing his younger brother called him to serve with greater empathy and understanding, and the work it took to come to terms with his PTSD and seek the help he needed. A best-selling author and professional speaker, he works as a coach and mentor to help others see how their failures can serve as an opportunity to “refine instead of define” them. He has spent years as an instructor, coach and mentor helping others define and realize success. Q. What inspired you to write “Fireproof: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future?”A. The death of my brother inspired me to write the book. My leadership failures, both personal and professional, inspired me to finish it.Q. What do you hope is the biggest takeaway from the book?A. That an individual's core essence determines the kind of leader they will be. Once they discover the truth inside of themselves—flaws and all—readers can challenge their limitations and let go of self-defeating behaviors. Within FIREPROOF, the question, “How can I create a Grand Strategy for my life?” is answered and leads the reader to develop their own unique Grand Strategy, to create a life that helps others and leaves a stellar legacy. Personal development topics like self-leadership, self-awareness, communication, healthy relationships and self-care run throughout FIREPROOF, as I emphasize the importance of uncovering one's core values and finding their big WHY. I provide an analysis tool for challenging situations to help the reader discern which parts they can control, what they can influence, and which things they can neither control or influence. I also provide tools for releasing stress and working through feelings of overwhelm, as well as outline critical daily habits and mindset matters that are essential for success.Q. What makes you an expert in this field/a unique voice to speak on this topic?A. I based the book on my personal experience and research. I spent 23 years in the fire service. I moved up through the ranks, retiring as a battalion chief responsible for 6 fire stations. I have effectively led people from all backgrounds in high stress environments. I developed a leadership training program for my fire department and taught leadership for 10 of the 23 years I served. I suffer from PTSD and as part of my healing process I research and study philosophy. In FIREPROOF: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future, Mr. Hollenbach takes the idea behind Yale University's Grand Strategy Program designed for political leaders and heads of large corporations and applies those principles to the individual. His book answers the question: How can I create a Grand Strategy for my life? He then leads the reader through steps to develop their own unique Grand Strategy to create a stellar legacy. In FIREPROOF: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future, Mr Hollenbach takes the idea behind Yale University's Grand Strategy Program designed for political leaders and heads of large corporations and applies those principles to the individual. His book answers the question: How can I create a Grand Strategy for my life? He then leads the reader through steps to develop their unique Grand Strategy to create a life that helps others and leaves a stellar legacy. No matter the disaster's severity, your intrinsic value is not attached to an occupation or your outward identity. Your value is in who you are. Take what you have learned and set your path toward where you want to go by implementing the steps in Fireproof. In a readable style sprinkled with personal stories and captivating case studies, the author delivers material that is both inspirational and actionable. At the end of each chapter are action steps to help the reader answer the questions: • What Is Your Desired End State? • What Do You Stand For? • Why Are You Doing This? • What's In Your Way? • What Do You Need? • Where Do You Begin? • What's Your Timeline? • What Happens When Everything Falls Apart? While most people ask, “What should I do to reach my goal?” the Grand Strategy process begins with a much better question: “Who do I need to be?” Your core essence determines what kind of leader you are. When you know what's inside you—flaws and all—you can use tools to release your limitations and let go of self-defeating behaviours. You can, in real and practical ways, define yourself. Personal development topics create a thread throughout the entire work: self-leadership, self-awareness, communication, healthy relationships and self-care, as well as uncovering your core values and finding your big WHY. The author provides an analysis tool for challenging situations to help the reader discern which parts they can control, what they can influence and which things they can neither control nor influence. He also provides tools for releasing stress and working through feelings of overwhelm. He lists critical daily habits and mindset matters that are essential for success. Guest Dave Hollenbach shares his frontline, servant leader experiences, but not with a plot twist or two along the way. He is the author of FIREPROOF: Your Grand Strategy for ... The post Fireproof: Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future appeared first on Leadership Powered by Common Sense.
Dave is a is a retired Fire Department Battalion Chief, author (“Fireproof: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future”), motivational speaker, and coach/mentor. These days, Dave spends much of his time running his leadership consulting firm and hosting his own podcast (From Embers to Excellence). Given his background I knew we would talk about leadership, but it was really interesting how Dave framed service, adding value to others, and what he calls "selfish altruism" as key tenets of being a leader. There was also an authenticity to how he thought about serving others, seemingly because he has really worked through the process in life to prove it is worth it. As Dave mentions he didn't always think this way. His ego used to be much bigger and he didn't really see much value in being a better leader or helping to raise those around him. But he's done a lot of work, humbled himself, and tried to truly learn what life is all about for him. Through that he realized the path of caring about other people and trying to help them improve, is what brings him the most purpose and joy. Then we did the fun work of asking the deep philosophical questions to try to understand why that is. Why does it actually matter on the grand scale of the universe if we make someone else smile or improve their circumstances? Is it just because it makes us feel good? Because if that is the case, is it fair to say that if it doesn't make somebody feel good to help others than they shouldn't? We asked those and lots of other big, hairy meaning of life questions; and it was fun to get Dave's perspective on them. Big thanks to him for being on and sharing his insights.

Honestly a lot, from working through failure to keeping commitments, we will take a look at how Michael Jordan was able to be the best in the world at his craft.
