POPULARITY
HOUR ONE: More than a hundred years ago, reports described it as “the most weird and gruesome apartment in the world.” Why display an entire room full of grotesque items and open it to the public? (New York Charnel House) *** Kell's Irish Pub in Seattle has a creepy vibe to it, even if the displays and decorations inside aren't meant to be. Perhaps that's because the building started its life as a massive mortuary. (The Beaux Arts Butterworth Building) *** Early one February morning in 1897, John Mars jumped out of bed from a sound sleep, and while the smell of breakfast cooking downstairs wafted up to the second level of the house, he inexplicably grabbed his pistol and went on a shooting spree of his own family. (The Act of a Mad Man) *** A four-year-old has a paranormal experience… and the man he grew into over 60 years later is still unsure of what happened to him. (The Lady Laughing In My Bedroom)==========HOUR TWO: A Malaysian Haunted House To Sell *** The brutal death of an African slave brings a curse upon the wooden chest he was ordered to construct. (The Conjure Chest) *** In Tuscaloosa, Alabama there is a home built by slaves that is considered the most haunted in Alabama. (The Haunting of Drish House) *** Drivers are reporting strange, ghostly orbs following them on dark roads. (Haunted Roads and Spook Lights) ==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: Dang Tan Ngoc is a well-known conman who has used the names of multiple dead soldiers to con veteran groups into giving him money. One identity he stole created a fascinating but dark story. (The Strange Return Of Master Sgt. John Hartley Robertson) *** A woman comes home to find her visiting sister murdered – and police were convinced she was the one who committed the crime. So what went wrong with the case to allow her to get away with it? (Did Ida Do It?) *** A bordello, pizza, and a haunting. You can find them all at the Red Onion Saloon. (Red Onion Saloon) *** Plus, I'll share two Creepypastas from Weirdo family members. “A Brief History of Egberting” from Louise Latham, and “Dreamality“ from Kara Raisch.==========SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM TONIGHT'S SHOW:“The Lady Laughing In My Bedroom” by Geof James: (link no longer available)“New York Charnel House”: (site no longer exists)“The Beaux Arts Butterworth Building” by Meg van Huygen: https://tinyurl.com/y7h2mkyr“The Act of a Madman” by Robert Wilhelm: https://tinyurl.com/y9757b7d“A Malaysian Haunted House to Sell” by Brandon Grimes for Paranormality Magazine: (site no longer exists)“The Conjure Chest” for The Unexplained Mysteries: https://tinyurl.com/m9w2ffg“The Haunting of Drish House” by Amanda Penn for Horror Media: (site no longer exists)“Haunted Roads and Spook Lights” by Brent Swancer for Mysterious Universe: https://tinyurl.com/ydfwg875“The Strange Return Of Master Sgt. On this episode, Tony Brueski digs into the haunted history of the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway, Alaska—a place where the Gold Rush never really ended, and some say the spirits of the past refuse to leave. From its days as a high-class brothel to its current role as a historic saloon and museum, the Red Onion's creaking floors have witnessed more than their share of secrets. But could some of those secrets still walk the halls today? We'll explore the story of Lydia, a madam whose perfume lingers long after her death, and the countless eerie encounters reported by staff and visitors alike. Are these ghostly events the lingering echoes of history—or just the product of a town steeped in folklore? Join us as we unravel the facts, the fables, and the chilling reality of one of Alaska's most famous haunts.

If you were a prospector looking to make a fortune in gold in the late 1800's, you needed to make a trip to the Klondike in Alaska. Gold was discovered there by local miners in August 1896, and when news reached places such as Seattle and San Francisco one year later, it triggered an avalanche of men ready to try their luck.During the Klondike Gold Rush an estimated 100,000 prospectors travelled to this region of the Yukon in north-western Canada in the last years of the 1800's.The Red Onion Saloon was one of many businesses that made enormous profits during this time, keeping their patrons entertained during those cold dark winters, and today it is known as one of the most haunted places in Alaska. In this episode, we head north to Alaska to find out who or what is still haunting the Red Onion Saloon! Maybe, it's a Madam still keeping an eye out on her girls? Maybe, it's the ghost of a prospector who lost all of his money gambling at the card tables or got into a bar fight ? So, you better rug up and pour yourself a stiff brandy as we tramp through the freezing snow to discover the secrets of one of the most haunted sites in Alaska. Well, it seems we've found ourselves at another bar and brothel, but every time has a pretty good time, so why not do it again. The small saloon in Alaska has been around for over a hundred years, and given the nature of the business it's no surprise that there have been some spirits left behind along the way. So take a casual trip all the way over to Alaska to grab a bite to eat and learn about the buildings history. Just make sure to ignore the translucent figure of a woman skittering down the halls. Happy Spooky Wednesday and Happy Homegrown month, dear listeners! This week we have special guest Abe Curran of Winzige Hosen and many other Duluth bands! First up, Kala talks about Red Onion Saloon in Skagway, Alaska! This building was once a brothel during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800s. It's now a popular restaurant and bar that has embraced its history in the form of both its brothel museum and it's ghostly inhabitants. When you visit, will the encounters be of the sensual kind or “push me down the stairs” kind? And Brittany tells us all about the Dybbuk box. This story has us screaming “WHY, KEVIN!?” as our story's protagonist misses all the hints and makes a bunch of dumb choices. If you had a cursed object, would you pass it along to all your family members? No? That's what we thought. Remember to listen for the code word to enter in our Duluth Homegrown Music Festival weeklong wristband giveaway! Once you know the code word, DM it to us on FB or Insta and be entered in for a chance to win! We will announce the winners on Friday, April 26th! Special thank you, again, to Abe Curran for joining us this week!
CW: This story briefly mentions suicide. Welcome to Episode Thirty Five of The West London Witch, a podcast where we share stories about those moments where we find ourselves very much not alone. Join us as Cori, the curator of The Red Onion Brothel Museum, shares with us what life as a victorian sex worker would have been like at The Red Onion, and why some of those workers may still be roaming the halls to this very day.

The town of Skagway, Alaska served as the “Gateway to the Klondike” and located within this town was the Red Onion Saloon, an exclusive brothel established in 1898 that served the 30,000 prospectors that came through the area seeking their fortune during the Klondike Gold Rush. Uniquely, dolls representing each of the workers would be placed at the bar, and customers would then choose by selecting a doll. It was only a brothel for two years before the gold rush waned there and a new rush popped up in Nome, Alaska. Throughout the years, the saloon housed various businesses including a dance hall, a pharmacy, a telegraph station, and army barracks during World War II. In 1980, the building was reopened as a saloon and restaurant, and the owner decorated with pictures of the girls who used to work there when it was a brothel as well as a brothel museum that operates upstairs. One of the most recognizable and famous spirits at the Red Onion Saloon is that of Lydia, one of the former prostitutes of the brothel. People will encounter a strong smell of perfume that lingers in the air as well as extreme cold spots where the smell of perfume had originated, and many believe that it is her. She has been seen many times in full apparition wearing a long dark dress gliding down the staircase after dark. Another active ghost is thought to be the spirit of Diamond Lil, where she will make herself known to male guests by gently running her hands along their legs and whispering in their ears. There is also a malevolent male spirit here who doesn't seem to be friendly towards anyone and some have seen the face of a male spirit in a mirror that is hanging in the Madam's bedroom.Join us on episode 127 to hear more about the Red Onion Saloon and the spirits that are still lingering here! Many Gold Rush towns are full of history, trauma and plenty of great ghost stories, but perhaps the most notorious of these is Skagway, Alaska. In a time when gunslingers and outlaws made the rules, Skagway's streets were flooded with "women of negotiable affection" and the brothels that housed them. The most desirable was the Red Onion Saloon. Today, the Saloon welcomes visitors from all over the world, providing drinks, food and tours of the upstairs brothel museum. Elise and Halee chat with museum curator Cori Giacomazzi about her ghostly encounters from within the brothel's walls, and hear spine-tinging details about a ghost who won't be named. We'll hear about Elise's summer spent as a tour guide and learn how the brothel's most notorious ghost Lydia perished. This week's episode is full of ghostly goodness, and we highly recommend you listen in the dark - if you dare. Happy Haunting!

Hello Again! (Please read the disclaimer at the bottom!) This episode, Courtney starts us off with a vey historically entertaining spoopy about the Red Onion Saloon in Alaska. Next, Ronnie tells us about the serial killer Robert Hanson...who ironically was also in Alaska. After that Courtney talks about a true crime case that had her OBSESSED for a week! PLEASE PLEASE start discussions on these in the Facebook Group! We wanna talk about any of these and hear what your opinions are! Don't forget to stalk us on Instagram at JackandJanePodcast, join our Facebook Group Jack and Jane Podcast! Thank you for listening! *DISCLAIMER* **PLEASE READ** Today's episode was a rough one. Even though we do choose to talk about these stories, at times they can make us uncomfy and so our coping mechanisms in life are laughing during inappropriate times and making dark jokes. Classy? Not quite, Villainous? Of course not. Most people react the same. I did debate for 2 weeks, on wether to delete the joke, or keep it, and ultimately I choose to include it, for multiple reasons. Even if you disagree with my choices, please give me a chance to explain them. 1. The 1st amendment. The freedom of speech, is one I believe most of us take for granted. We may not always agree with what other individuals say but once we start deciding to limit what people can say, where do we stop? Where does it end? 1984 taught me that's not a world I want to live in. 2. I truly believe that comedy shouldn't have rules (1st amendment) and that it was created to push the line. Keep us thinking. Keep us questioning things. Which leads us to.... 3. This is a real subject that we should be questioning! There are actual men and women (Not Ronnie...I swear) that believe that narrative. That sex workers cannot be sexually assaulted or that they are some how less important than other people and unfortunately there are police who believe the same. WHY? Why does society say these people don't matter? Or they deserve it? This is a good topic to discuss or at least ponder. If the joke hurt anyone, I'm genuinely sorry. Please understand that neither him nor I are unsympathetic as I am also a survivor. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/courtney6687/support

Skagway, Alaska is a popular destination for cruise ships hosting Alaskan cruises and it was one of the settings for Jack London's "Call of the Wild." And Skagway does have a wild history due to its location during the Klondike Gold Rush. The Red Onion Saloon not only provided a place for prospectors to get a drink, it also was a high class brothel. Today, the saloon is a restaurant and bar that serves up more than just food and drinks, it serves up some haunting experiences. The Golden North Hotel dates back to the gold rush as well and plays host to two apparitions. There are buildings for fraternal organizations and government and a couple of houses that also play host to spirits. Leah has a special guest star, one of her best friends Lauren! They venture into a show Bryant would never agree to watch, Alaska Haunting. They watch 5 out of 6 episodes of the series (which apparently, much to Leah's disappointment was only one season). The best episode of the 5 is episode 3 "Gold Town Terror"- where a cute alaskan investigator goes to investigate the Red Onion Saloon which was a brothel for 2 years and has the best museum curator. Lauren and Leah get off track and talk about her lovely apartment decor and furniture shopping done right (with wine).
