How to be happy together? How to make your relationship last? Relationships can be tough. As it gets more serious, new problems and misunderstandings may appear out of the blue. Your friends and family will try to help you out with their advice. However, there are some types of advice psychologists recommend avoiding at any cost if you want your relationship to be healthy. TIMESTAMPS “You should find someone better for yourself” 0:43 “Show them who's the boss. Don't let them push you around!” 1:45 “Demand that your partner is romantic” 2:40 “Stay quiet. Don't make it worse” 3:49 “Just read their chat. You have the right!” 4:42 “Just remind him that what he earns isn't enough” 5:35 “Look at me and learn” 6:23 Bonus: relationship algorithms 7:55 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY -Your friends or family keep telling you that “he or she doesn't deserve you,” simply because your partner doesn't have a lot going on for him or her at the moment. However, according to psychologists, profit-seeking cannot be an adequate reason to start or end a true relationship. -It can be hard for two “leader types” to be “followers” from time to time. However, allow yourself to jazz thing up sometimes and change your roles so that each of you would understand one another better. -Psychologists claim that there's a certain romantic period in any relationship that commonly passes after some time. Partners can't live forever like they're in a romantic comedy, going crazy when they see each other. -Conflicts are an inevitable part of any relationship. And it's actually also a very needed one. You shouldn't suppress your feelings and wait until they break out one day because this will cause even more damage to the marriage or relationship. -Being in a couple doesn't mean that every bit of your partner's life should be devoted to you. Every person needs to have their space, and it doesn't equal to him or her not loving you. -If you really want to, you can find a lot of mutual reproaches to make it all even worse. Specialists say that you shouldn't discuss such matters on a daily basis and try not to mention something like this during a big conflict. -When you have marriage difficulties, don't look at other families and try to copy their way of life. You never know what problems they may face behind closed doors. -If you take a smart man and add a smart woman, that's a perfect recipe for long-lasting love, as they both will find the right ways to make the relationship work. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
This month's Deep Dive series is about flouting parenting rules and advice that don't work for us. Listen to a Spotify playlist of all the episodes in the series here. Are you a rule breaker or a rule follower? Are you married to your opposite? We're both rule followers, and when one builds a life with someone who sees the "NO DOGS IN THE LAKE" sign as an invitation to let the golden retriever go for a swim, one is caught between two bad choices: swallow the horrible anxiety that others might think *you* are the sort of person who has zero consideration for clearly posted signage, or be the stick in the mud who can never loosen up a little. In this episode we discuss why both kinds of people exist, and bump up against each other– and why the "no rules pool" isn't as fun as it sounds how rules limit possibilities, good and bad why humans tend to create more rules during and after times of struggle whether kids are born to be rule followers It's worth the struggle to find the balance for our families. In order for our kids to have the secret thrill of breaking a rule, there need to be a few rules there in the first place. Here are links to some of the writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode: Michele Gelfand: Rule Makers, Rule Breakers: How Tight and Loose Cultures Wire Our World Diane Spear: Play By the Relationship Rules! In this episode, I talk with Kimberley Quinlan, LMFT, about 5 relationship rules that changed her life. She's been married for 20 years and has so much wisdom to share. Here's a sneak peek at the 5 life-changing relationship rules: 1. It is not your job or my job to manage our family's emotions. 2. It is not your job to please the people you are in a relationship with. 3. They are allowed to have their feelings about our choices. 4. It is okay if they struggle to understand us. 5. You get to (and they get to) change their mind or change, period. This conversation is jam-packed with helpful reminders about how to navigate the challenges that can come from relationships.
