President Trump plans a sharp change of directionThe US elections last week are set to transform the energy landscape, with the Republicans now in control of the presidency, the Senate, and likely the House of Representatives. They intend to set a new direction for energy policy, emphasising affordability and reliability over sustainability and climate. In this special episode of The Energy Gang, we explore what this shift means for the American energy sector and the potential implications for both domestic and global markets. Host Ed Crooks is joined Amy Myers Jaffe, Director of the Energy, Climate Justice and Sustainability Lab at New York University; Robbie Orvis, Senior Director at the think-tank Energy Innovation, and a new voice on the show: Ray Long, President and CEO of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE). Their discussion gives a preview of what we can expect over the next four years. They debate how a new set of priorities in Washington will affect low-carbon energy sectors including wind, solar and storage, as well as carbon capture, hydrogen, and nuclear energy. What will happen to the Inflation Reduction Act's tax credits, which are crucial to the outlook for renewables? How will national security policy and the rise of artificial intelligence shape the new administration's thinking. What is the outlook for the US vehicle industry as Chinese EV sales boom? And how could President-elect Trump's tariff plans affect all energy sectors, both low-carbon and high-carbon? Tune in for answers to all these questions, and to gain a comprehensive understanding of the evolving energy policy landscape. As negotiators gather for the COP29 UN climate talks in Baku this week, the future of the US under a new administration is going to be top of mind for everyone.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Prior to joining us in January 2021, Ms. Cimaglia served as the Managing Director of Solebury Trout's ESG 360 platform, where she advised private and public companies on the development and communication of ESG strategies, including investor relations and corporate communications initiatives. Prior to that, Amanda served as the head of investor relations and ESG at Hannon Armstrong (NYSE: HASI), the first U.S. public company solely dedicated to investments in climate solutions, providing capital to leading companies in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other sustainable infrastructure markets. During her seven-year tenure at Hannon Armstrong, Amanda built an award-winning investor relations program, garnering the Best Overall Investor Relations (Small Cap) Award by IR Magazine, as well as being named a finalist for both Best ESG Reporting and Rising Star of investor relations. She has served as a member of the ESG working groups for both the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Amanda Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: How a background in investor relations helps with managing ESG The history of sustainability as AZEK Creating recycled material and sourcing at AZEK Advice on zero waste events including the TimberTech Championship  AZEK's process of widening emission accounting  The importance of leadership in integrating ESG into the business strategy at AZEK Amanda's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would again say ESG is a journey and not a destination. Focus on what's impactful and prioritize your ESG initiatives accordingly. We will always have the opportunity to evolve. Don't let perfection be the enemy of the good.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? Having been in this space for the last decade of my career, the momentum that we've experienced over the last two years alone is remarkable. ESG and ESG stewardship is no longer optional. It's table stakes for everyone. I would add to that, that I am constantly encouraged and inspired by what innovations are being brought to the market, what partnerships are being created to drive circularity, drive sustainability, and the conversations that are being had across companies from the senior level of the organization to the manager level, to other employees and even hourly employees across the organization. It is a point of empowerment and a point of conversation and a point of inspiration for all of us. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? I just finished a brand new book written by the Harvard Business School professor and ESG rockstar I like to call him, George Serafeim, who I had the opportunity to host for a fireside chat a couple of years ago. The book is called Purpose and Profit: How Business Can Lift Up the World, and it offers a roadmap really for people at any stage of their career who seek to align their professional aspirations with their personal values. It's relatable no matter where you are in the organization, and no matter what level you are in the organization, it's relevant to both corporates and investors alike. George really discusses how the purpose of business has changed over time, how we can implement more purpose-driven strategies, and how companies can capture value. I think my favorite part of the book is how he highlights that we all have choices on what we buy, how we invest, and where we work. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I like to keep up to date on ESG issues by reading the many newsletters that are published in the ESG space such as Bloomberg Green and Harvard Law School's Forum on Corporate Governance and ESG. I would also say, being an NYSE listed company, the ESG team at the New York Stock Exchange, they do a great job on ESG programming and best practices. And finally, LinkedIn. I find a lot of inspiration from LinkedIn and I seem to wake up every day to find out something new and exciting that is happening in the field of sustainability. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and your work? I'm on LinkedIn, so your listeners are welcome to find me and follow me there. Then, of course, our website, azekco.com. We have our full circle ESG report on there and a lot of additional resources to learn more about the AZEK company and how we are revolutionizing outdoor living to create a more sustainable future.

Mona's journey to renewable energy [03:57] Mona's most challenging deal [13:25] Major trends in renewable energy deals [17:24] What's happening in storage? [32:17] Important factors to accelerate the market [37:40] What drives Mona's passion? [44:20] Mona's work at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP Pillsbury's energy and infrastructure group covers clean energy, hydrogen, ESG, sustainable finance, and anything to do with clean tech. Mona is dual qualified and represents companies in North America as well as Europe. Many of the deals she works on are incredibly challenging and most come with unique difficulties. One of Mona's most challenging deals was during COVID because it involved companies from three continents that couldn't meet in person, but Mona is an expert at making a deal work and negotiated it successfully. She is unique because she not only counsels clients on legal aspects of business but also on the commercial and economic aspects. The future of clean energy The need for clean energy is accelerating, driven by COVID and the Biden administration, as well as an increase in decarbonization goals from many utilities and businesses. Renewable energy has been focused heavily on solar and wind, but other technologies, including advanced battery storage, offshore wind, and hydrogen are moving toward commercialization. Mona has seen a lot of deal activity across the value chain, with many different stakeholders consolidating positions. Major oil and gas companies and governments are also setting ambitious climate goals, and there's more federal support here in the U.S. and globally. Some countries have mandates or stimulus and tax incentives to capture more renewable energy deals, especially in the power, oil, and gas utility industries.  The potential of hydrogen Hydrogen has been around for over 100 years. Many industry stakeholders are currently considering hydrogen production and storage projects, in addition to wind and solar, as part of their decarbonization strategy. The reason it's taking off now, at least from a domestic standpoint, is because of the push for decarbonization, particularly net-zero goals. Mona has been working on hydrogen in Europe for a while, but in the past year has recently been working in the United States with blending hydrogen and natural gas to support utilities, pipelines, and oil and gas majors' decarbonization efforts. While clean hydrogen is expensive now, it can be equated to what solar was 15 or 20 years ago. When a country promotes hydrogen strategies with incentives, there will be a proliferation of deals. Mona is currently working on deals that combine renewables and hydrogen, as combining many different contributing elements creates a hydrogen hub, which is a favorite pathway for how clean hydrogen usage will develop. Today is Solar Appreciation Day, which was created to build awareness of the benefits of solar energy and its ability to help create sustainable energy. Solar energy continues to be one of the most popular and cost-effective sources of clean energy. In this multi-series, I explore the investment appetite for clean energy. To gauge investor confidence on the impacts of market and policy changes, the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) polled senior-level respondents across the nation’s leading banking institutions, asset managers, private equity firms, and other financial firms. The survey, "The Future of U.S. Renewable Energy Investment: A Survey of Leading Financial Institutions,” reveals a robust market with significant potential to accelerate the renewable sector’s growth. Two-thirds of respondents plan to increase investments more than 5 percent in 2018 compared to 2017, and half plan to increase investments more than 10 percent. Stay tuned next time to find out what other areas investors are looking to invest in climate change mitigation and response. And to learn more, visit https://ScottAmyx.com/.
