Local governments are double-edged swords on climate, capable of either doing far more or far less than national governments and acting as either an agent of change or an agent of obstruction in and of themselves. In this episode, Rebecca Bromley-Trujillo, of Christopher Newport University and Joshua A. Basseches, of Tulane University, join to walk us through how these subnational governments work, and how they engage in climate obstruction, in various parts of the world. Donors looking to make a difference in their local communities can turn to community foundations — local philanthropic institutions driven by giving “of, by, and for the people” and rooted in the goal of creating thriving communities. In this episode, Phil and Grace are joined in conversation by three community foundation leaders: Dick Ober, president and CEO of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, LaTida Smith, president of the Winston-Salem Foundation, and Alesha Washington, president and CEO of the Seattle Foundation. In sharing their experiences and approaches, these CEOs encourage donors to embrace their power to engage and effect change in their own community. They reflect on thorny issues including working across ideological lines, supporting often under-appreciated nonprofits and their staff, and the proliferation of giving options for donors. They also explore how to ensure money doesn't sit in institutions, but gets out the door to organizations working in communities. Navigating tax obligations at the local level was just as important as managing state and federal taxes, especially for businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions. We hosted an informative session where our CPAs, Shruti Shah and Heena Patel, along with Client Services Manager Arianna Gonzalez, MBA, broke down key local-level tax requirements that impacted business operations, compliance, and the bottom line.In this session, we covered:• Why local taxes mattered and how they impacted operations• The main types of local taxes: income-based, payroll, sales, gross receipts, and more• What created a tax "nexus" at the local level• Cities that levied taxes on business income or employee payroll• Key thresholds, exemptions, and rules for small businesses• How different industries faced different local tax treatments• Local sales tax variations and common compliance pitfalls• Lesser-known local taxes to watch out for• Real client case examples — both mistakes and smart tax-saving movesListen in to know more!

This week, Zachary hosts a conversation with Jeremi and Dr. Peniel Joseph about his new book, Freedom Season, which describes the pivotal significance of 1963 in the Civil Rights Movement, highlighting key events such as the Birmingham protests, the March on Washington, the Birmingham church bombing, and the assassination of JFK. This week, instead of the usual poem, we set the scene with an audio excerpt of Martin Luther King Jr. reading from his "Letter from Birmingham Jail." Peniel Joseph holds a joint professorship appointment at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the History Department in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. He is also the founding director of the LBJ School's Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. His career focus has been on “Black Power Studies,” which encompasses interdisciplinary fields such as Africana studies, law and society, women's and ethnic studies, and political science. Prior to joining the UT faculty, Joseph was a professor at Tufts University, where he founded the school's Center for the Study of Race and Democracy to promote engaged research and scholarship focused on the ways issues of race and democracy affect people's lives. In addition to being a frequent commentator on issues of race, democracy and civil rights, Joseph wrote the award-winning books “Waiting ‘Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America, “Dark Days, Bright Nights: From Black Power to Barack Obama," and “Stokely: A Life" as well as “The Black Power Movement: Rethinking the Civil Rights-Black Power Era” and “Neighborhood Rebels: Black Power at the Local Level.”" His most recent book is "Freedom Season: How 1963 Transformed America's Civil Rights Revolution."
The ACT Party has recently announced that candidates standing in local elections, if elected, will oppose attempts to mitigate emissions at a local level. ACT Local Government spokesperson, Cameron Luxton, says council's should “focus on what they can control,” and not “costly symbolic declarations”. For our weekly catchup with the ACT Party's Simon Court, News and Editorial Director and Monday Wire Host, Joel, spoke to him about this move. We also discussed the government's sanctions on Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. New Zealand has joined countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada, and Norway, in banning Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich over allegedly “inciting extremist violence" against Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and “undermin[ing] peace” for a two-state solution. Finally, we discussed changes being made to the proposed anti-stalking laws. But first, we discussed ACT candidates opposing attempts to mitigate emissions at a local level.
In our final episode of this season's "Session Voices" series, we talk (again) with Mary Collins, of UM's Center for Children, Families and Workforce Development. Mary talks about the many steps left to codify and implement new policies, now that the session has ended, and the ways in which communities can work together to implement these changes. We discuss the power of local coalitions, particularly Early Childhood Coalitions (ECC's) -- what they are, why they exist, and how you can get involved in one in your own community (or help create one). Guest Bio: Mary Collins has worked in a variety of social service settings where she provided counseling, advocacy, and supportive services to children, adolescents, and adults. She worked for the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) in a variety of leadership positions focused on improving Montana's behavioral health system. In her role at the Center for Children, Families and Workforce Development, Mary works to support Montana's early childhood system. In this episode, the hosts discuss the pressing issues surrounding cybersecurity, particularly focusing on the challenges faced by local governments in securing their systems against rising threats. In this interview with Michelle Sterling, Communications Manager at Friends of Science (www.friendsofscience.org) we discuss how the green climate agenda is being implemented at a local level. We review how buzz words like "net zero", "reduced carbon footprint" and "15 minute cities" are being used by local politicians to get residents to willingly reduce their standard of living and also pay more in taxes to reduce carbon emissions. The whole premise is built around fraudulent data and partnerships with unelected foreign NGOs. The implementation of such a radical agenda will lead to widespread poverty and hopelessness if allowed to be implemented. On this episode: It might come as a bit of a surprise that between 2018 and 2023, over half of the elections that took place were uncontested, meaning that there was one, or even zero, candidates vying for seats in those races. That figure this year was closer to 70% – the highest we've seen since we began collecting data on local elections in 2018. Winning an election is obviously a whole lot easier if you're not running against anybody, and the implications of where and how this plays raises important questions about why folks aren't running for office, what effect it has on local politics, and what, if anything, could be done to reverse the trend. Washington, DC, September 12, 2024 — On this special podcast episode, the National Association of County and City Health Officials' (NACCHO) Director of Government Affairs, Victoria Van de Vate, welcomes special guest Eric McNulty, Associate Director of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative at Harvard University, for a bonus episode on best practices to implement for effective preparedness work on the local level. September is National Preparedness Month, and every year NACCHO reinforces the importance of preparing for emergencies and disasters in order to keep families and communities safe. During this episode, McNulty shares key approaches that public health officials can apply to build trust in their communities, which is essential in any crisis. As McNulty describes, public health officials can position themselves as a trusted voice by engaging in day-to-day conversations with their communities, lead through complexities by identifying the disconnect in a crisis, and make it a daily practice to strengthen communications outreach plans that are relatable and easy to grasp. It is also important to prioritize a crisis recovery plan when preparing for the next public health emergency. Early next year, NACCHO will convene at the 2025 Preparedness Summit, which aims to explore this topic further through the theme of “Pathways to Recovery in the Aftermath of Disasters.” For more information on how to obtain a media pass for the 2025 Preparedness Summit please contact lharley@naccho.org – limited passes are available. ### About NACCHO The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) represents the over 3,300 local governmental health departments across the country. There are groups in America working overtime—not to influence who people vote for, but rather to influence how the underlying election system actually operates. To be more specific, I am referring to two separate, big-money operations that are both ready to spend about $80 million each in order to determine how local elections throughout the entire country are run. This might sound like hyperbole, but it's not. Let's examine what these organizations are, and how they are trying to affect the election system.

In our latest episode, we interview Erin Loos Cutraro, the founder and CEO of She Should Run, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging women to run for office - it's so needed! Did you know that women still hold less than 30% of all elected offices across the federal, state, and local level, and the numbers are even lower when looking at women from underrepresented communities? Black women comprise less than 6% of officeholders in Congress, statewide elective executive offices, and state legislatures; only 7.9% of all women state legislators identify as Latina; and, roughly 0.23 percent of U.S elected officials identify as LGBTQIA+. Women are still less likely than men to have thought about running for office or to express interest in running for office in the future. Women are less likely to have opted into leadership roles from a young age. In fact, few of us– less than 2%– grow up with the dream to run for office one day. There's lots of work to do!Before the interview, we chat about the movie American Fiction and how the Black American experience is portrayed in media. On this week's episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, joins us to discuss what states and other local jurisdictions can do to combat illegal immigration in wake of the Biden administration's refusal to enforce immigration laws. Vaughan joins us from the Western States Sheriffs' Association convention in Reno, Nev.Vaughan provides suggestions to states and localities on policies and laws that can be implemented to remove illegal aliens from their jurisdictions and make their communities less attractive to illegal aliens. It's important for these jurisdictions to take action now to push back on what is happening on the federal level, but it's also important if we get a new administration that takes immigration enforcement seriously. As Vaughan explains, the federal government can't properly enforce the immigration law without cooperation from state and local governments.Certain states have passed state laws that combat illegal immigration. In Texas, the state legislature passed a law that would make illegal immigration to their state a crime, but the law has temporarily been put on hold by the Supreme Court. Vaughan urges states to go after the criminal infrastructure of illegal immigration, like what Florida did by passing tough anti-smuggling legislation. At the end of the episode, Vaughan shares what she has heard firsthand from sheriffs on how illegal immigration is impacting their communities. They are united in their concerns over public safety and upset that Biden has yet to meet with a sheriff. And this is an issue that is unlikely to improve anytime soon without federal action – Sheriff Mark Dannels of Cochise County, Ariz., which is a border county, says that border-related crime has risen from 5 percent of all crimes in his county to a whopping 44 percent in the last three years.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestJessica Vaughan is the Director of Policy Studies at the Center for Immigration StudiesRelatedMap: Sanctuary Cities, Counties, and StatesHow States Can Fight Human TraffickingFlorida Grand Jury: Biden Putting Alien Children in Harm's WayRecommendations for State and Local Action on ImmigrationU Visas for Illegal-Alien Crime Victims: Yet Another Amnesty PloyBiden Border Policies Are Working Fine — For the CartelsNumbersUSA E-Verify MapFollowFollow Parsing Immigration Policy on Ricochet, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts.Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. What do two of the youngest city councilmembers in California have in common? Both believe that young people belong in politics. Creating Citizens, The Commonwealth Club's education initiative, is excited to host Oakland Councilmember Janani Ramachandran and South San Francisco Councilmember James Coleman as they talk with high school students about the role of young people in civic life. Both city councilmembers, born and raised in the communities they now serve, find themselves as the youngest members of their respective city councils. As they work to empower their communities, they find they must constantly navigate a much older political ecosystem that isn't always the most welcoming to young faces. The councilmembers will be joined in conversation with Dr. Stephen Morris. Dr. Morris, the CEO and co-founder of the Civic Education Center, has spent more than 20 years working in education. Together, they will discuss local government and how everyone, from politicians to students, can work with people with whom they disagree. Learn more about your ad choices. John's Visit with President Trump During his recent visit to Iowa, our co-host John Hendrickson, was fortunate enough to attend a rally in Clive, at the Horizon Event Center, where Former President Trump gave a thoughtful and informative speech on several policy issues, particularly the trade policy. The rally was impressive, teeming with energy, and had standing room only crowd. The experience for Hendrickson was enjoyable and exciting, meeting the president and a lot of great people. Active participation in campaigns, regardless of whether your candidate wins or not is always thrilling. Being involved in the election process of the leader of the free world, exchanging thoughts with various people, and understanding the diverse opinions that exist, makes the whole process worth cherishing. We encourage every American, irrespective of their political allegiance, to experience this excitement.

Federal elections–and their results–play a huge role in how our democracy operates. But decisions made at state and local elections have the most direct impact on people's everyday lives. The local and state level also influences the way elections are run, and how citizens hold their elected officials accountable. Democracy Decoded is a podcast by Campaign Legal Center that examines our government and discusses innovative ideas that could lead to a stronger, more transparent, accountable and inclusive democracy. In the third season, host Simone Leeper covers everything you need to know about democracy at the state and local level–including where and when citizens can vote, campaign finance contribution limits, and how citizens can protect their communities' interests in the face of corruption. Because our democracy works best, when every voter can fully participate.

Episode 2479:: Taking Crimea; Change Starts At The Local Level
Mayor Adams traveled to the border in El Paso this past Sunday to make the case that the federal government needs to cover the cost of caring for the influx of migrants making their way to NYC. Krish O'Mara Vignarajah, president and CEO of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, talks about the predicament cities are in and the Biden administration's current immigration and border security policies.
Conservatives continue to focus solely on Biden and the midterms, while failing to see how Republicans are already betraying them. Last night, Republicans funded more inflation and clot-shot mandates with the defense bill, yet nobody cares. GOP governors are going along with punishing Guardsmen for not getting the shots. Then, we still have people getting thrown in jail for Jan. 6 while not having committed actual crimes. What are we going to do to stop this political persecution? We are joined by Pinal County, Arizona, Sheriff Mark Lamb, who warns that tyranny cannot succeed without the complaisance of local law enforcement. He explains his "sheriff's posse" program to establish a seamless relationship between local law enforcement and the community to ensure that a firewall against tyranny is built at the local level. Our challenge is to use and expand this idea throughout the country. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
