Send us a textAs an author of cruising books and continuing that same premise in the form of a podcast, I have learned of a large variety of vessels, destinations and experiences that I barely knew existed before I started capturing these stories. Accordingly, as The Joy of Cruising Podcast listeners know, my cruising bucket list runneth over. In August, Cheryl and I got the opportunity to check our first river cruise off the list. The itinerary of the cruise, 2024 Colors of Provence, Special Friends Soulful Epicurean Experience Aboard the Chartered AmaKristina was: 7-Night cruise sailing the Rhone River through the South of France, embark from Arles, France, Avignon, Viviers, Tournon, Vienne, and disembark in Lyon, France  3-Nights Paris, FranceFriends in the title refers to Friends of Festival at Sea. Produced and founded by industry icon Patricia Yarbrough, President, Blue World Travel, in San Francisco, Festival at Sea offers an annual African American full-ship charter cultural cruise that has sold out for 40 years. Their affiliated brand, Friends of Festival at Sea specializes in high-end cruises on luxury ships to exotic destinations and filled the 156-passenger AmaKristina for our sailing. I wrote about Patricia and Festival at Sea in my 1st cruising book, The Joy of Cruising amzn.to/3lAfyON, and hosted her on The Joy of Cruising Podcast Ep 39. Experiencing a Festival at Sea cruise is an inspiration. When I researched Patricia I learned about its affiliated Friends of Festival at Sea brand which sails the likes of Regent Seven Seas and Viking to exotic location like Africa, Singapore, and Paris, and doing a Friends of Festival at Sea vacation has been on my bucket list for years.  As AmaWaterways is consistently rated among the world's top river cruise lines it would have been an easy choice for our first river cruise journey. What made the choice of AmaWaterways that much easier was the introduction in Spring 2024 of its “Soulful” series of cruises. To diversify its customer base—which included a negligible percentage of people of color—AmaWaterways decided to take select itineraries and add components that would appeal to cruisers from or are interested in the Black and African diaspora. What made it a “no-brainer” was it a full ship charter by Friends of Festival at Sea, and they bring their own party including DJ, Saxophonist, dance instructor, and comedian, Damon Williams who also has been on the podcast Support the showSupport thejoyofcruisingpodcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/supporters/newSupport Me https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drpaulthContact Me https://www.thejoyofcruising.net/contact-me.htmlBook Cruises https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingPodcast-BookACruiseUS Orders (coupon code joyofcruisingpodcast)The Joy of Cruising https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingCruising Interrupted https://bit.ly/CruisingInterruptedThe Joy of Cruising Again https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingAgainIntl Orders via Amazon

Flowering almond trees shed their petals on the breeze, and reach to the sky, 40 feet above our heads. Painted sailboats float on a bubbling Rhone River, as yellow stars whirl in the blue night sky. Walls melt. Water pools on the ground. In the etheric octave of Earth, on the beautiful banks of what we think of as the Rhone River in the south of France, there’s a university of the Spirit known as the Chateau de Liberte. The master of the retreat is a teacher of surprising power, who for the asking, is able to gently unfold the divine understanding of love. The understanding expands so that your foremost thoughts become, how to please God in the people you know. You can’t see the expansion at first, but the curriculum here encourages the eye of the divine artist, photographer and filmmaker to adore the presence of God in you and yours. Located in the South West of France, Occitanie is made up of the two regions previously labeled Languedoc-Roussillon and the Pyrénées-Orientales. With the Languedoc known as “the other Provence”, the region runs from the Rhone River over to the Eastern Pyrenees and the Spanish border, taking in the Mediterranean beaches and towns along the way and extending northwards to the lower portion of the mountainous Massif Central. There are many similarities with Provence in climate, landscapes, perched villages and scenery - without all the crowds and typically at a lower cost.

I was immediately smitten with Lyon. It's the gastronomic capital of France and the heart of the Rhone Alpes region. I only had plans for a quick overnight in the Old Town. I checked into my hotel and asked for a dinner recommendation. As I was walking to the restaurant, I peered down a narrow alley and the sound of warm laughter was spilling out over the cobblestones. I wanted to soak up the convivial atmosphere so I sat next to a table of about 10 people with a jumble of accents who eventually shared their food and wine with me and absorbed me into their festivities. One of the couples lived in Lyon. They insisted I stay longer and offered me a room in their nearby flat an extra night. We were up until all hours. In the morning, I quickly checked out to start my explorations.   Lyon is a dream for a nervous cyclist. Paris is too large and unwieldy for me. Here I was nestled safely between the Rhone River and Saone River making it a breeze to get around. I ventured to the steps of la Croix Rousse for panoramic views of the city. I had a lovely Lyonnaise salad before boarding my train as a final seal on my memory of Lyon.   Want answers? 1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries Podcast

In a tiny town named Sans Marie de la Mer on the Southern coast of France, where the Rhone River empties into the Mediterranean, they still celebrate the coming of a small boat which arrived a little over 2,000 years ago.  The boat carried with it a group of Christ believers who had been chased out of Palestine after Jesus's crucifiction and set adrift with no sails, or oars, or rudder- to perish in the Mediterranean Sea. Among this group  were Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome, the mother of James and John the Disciples, and Mary Cleopas, like Salome, a sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus.- all witnesses to Jesus Christ's death, and all devout believers. Also in the small entourage- Joseph of Arimathea, who had asked Pontius Pilot for the body of Jesus, Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead, and other believers who would build churches throughout Europe and spread the word. This is their story, and a story in which we discuss the discovery of the long buried Gnostic Scriptures, the Gospel of Mary, Saul's purging of Christians from the Holy Land, the Coptic Christian sect, and more, In Part two we'll cover the incredible story of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who was Jesus's uncle, the legend of where he took Jesus during those years Jesus was missing from the bible, and his tin mines on the coast of England- tin that the Romans needed.. We'll discuss the legend of Mary Magdale's work and her death in France, and the legend she left behind, as well as the works and the fates of the other Mary;s and their companions on their journey.  SUPPORT OUR SHOW MONTHLY AT PATREON Become an Assistant Producer at 1001 Stories Network ( a great resume enhancement) and support us at Patreon today! Wine may not come to mind when you think of Idaho but like the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, the Rhone River in France and the world's other exceptional wine growing river valleys, Boise has the Snake River Valley. The weather can be a challenge and they need more acreage planted to vines but they're off to a good start and are determined to grow. In the meantime, Washington has been a reliable source of grapes for Idaho wine producers. While in Boise my wife and I met Earl Sullivan of Telaya Wine Co. I was impressed with not only his winemaking style but the story he told of how he and his wife Carrie chose to forgo successful careers to start a winery for the purpose of owning a family run business. It's a story worth hearing.

While the Rhone River may lack the cachet Seine's cachet, the Rhine's twists and turns, and the Danube's sweep, it's safe to say that Europe wouldn't be the same without it. That's evident in places like the city of Avignon, the medieval capital of Christendom'.

Steve Ledson's AmaWaterways Wine River Cruise Paris to Normandy, Great Food, Wine, Tours & More: In the segment of interview of Steve Ledson, head of Ledson Winery in Sonoma Valley, with Paul Lasley the subject turns to the AmaWaterways Luxury Wine River Cruise that he hosted as a wine expert/vintner from Paris to Barcelona on the Rhone River. Steve Ledson had never been on a river cruise and he loved being able to spend time in the towns and cities to soak up the culture. On big ships that is not possible and Steve was also amazed how the crew was able to remember all the passengers names. Because he was not really sure about river cruising, he didn't fill the boat but AmaWaterays was able to do so and those passengers ended up being fans and consumers of Ledson wines. A French Sommelier was on-board ship proved a big hit and he told Steve, "I normally don't like American wines, but your wines are phenomenal." Steve Ledson said he was overall pleased with the cruise and is in the process of setting up another AmaWaterways Wine Cruise to host and probably to the region of France because of the many friends he has in the wine business. About Ledson Family: Our family winery is located in the heart of Sonoma Valley, a short one hour drive north of San Francisco. Ledson Staircase Emerging like a gothic blast from the past out of acres of rolling vineyards and pastoral calm, our 16,000 square foot French Normandy winery is known as "The Castle" around the world. Originally designed as our family home, the contractor and designer in me got carried away and it quickly became clear that the architectural showpiece was much better suited to house our planned winery. We specialize in small varietal lots that reflect the genuine diversity of our select vineyards and appellations. Ledson wines are sold exclusively at the winery in Kenwood, in our online store, and at the Ledson Hotel in Sonoma. We have developed a number of different wine club programs, offering members preferred pricing and access to wines not available to the public. With over 70 wines to choose from, there is something for everyone. Boasting beautifully appointed hand-crafted tasting bars, impeccable grounds with picnic areas shadowed by 100-year old majestic oak trees, a fully stocked gourmet market as well as a tasteful clothing and gift boutique--the Ledson Winery is the breathtaking backdrop for an afternoon picnic or a weekend getaway.

Full Radio Show: Steve Ledson, AmaWaterways Wine River Cruise Host & Head of Lebson Winery, Sonoma: In a rather interesting interview Paul Lasley encounters an AmaWaterways Wine River Cruise host who happens to have a family history going back over 150 years in the Sonoma Valley in Northern California. Steve Ledson, a fifth generation winemaker, tells fantastic stories about his Great Great Grandfather who was making wine in the 1860s and scores of relatives along the way who farmed produce or made in the Valley for generations. The famous Ledson 16,000 square foot Gothic/Normandy style edifice Castle Hotel is a landmark in the area and Steve Ledson has refurbished a number of old buildings in Santa Rose, such as the art deco Rosenberg department store building that houses a Barnes & Noble and Ledson's executive offices. Ledson hosted an AmaWaterways Luxury Wine River Cruise from Paris to Barcelona on the Rhone River, called Provence & Spain, and enjoyed it so much he is booking another one as wine host with the full intention of filling the whole ship with his followers. On the cruise in November 2014 there were 40 people who were booked by AmaWaterways and most all of them came away from the cruise as fans and consumers of Ledson wines.
