La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Hebrews 10: 32-39; Rs psalm 37: 3-4.5-6.23-24.39-40; Mark 4: 26-34 STEADFAST IN HOPE Our meditation on this day has the theme: Steadfast in Hope. Every January 31, the Salesian Society of Don Bosco (SDB), the Salesian Family, and many others who live the spirit of Saint John Bosco celebrate it as a feast, which is the day of the death of the saint from Turin, Northern Italy. He was a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Turin, endowed with a special charism by the Holy Spirit, to work for the education of the most abandoned and poor young people. He founded a men's consecrated life society named SDB (Salesian of Don Bosco), and a women's society named FMA (Daughters of Mary Help of Christians). He also founded a lay collaborator called the Salesian Cooperator. He followed the spiritual intuition and teaching of Saint Francis of Sales, Bishop of Geneva (Switzerland) who lived more than 200 years before Don Bosco, so the institutes and large families he founded are called the Salesians. The education system for young people popularized by Don Bosco, recognized by the Church and used as an effective Catholic education system, is called the preventive system. Early in his work for the good and salvation of adolescents and youth of the city of Turin, Don Bosco for the fist time found their lives and circumstances to be very poor. They were the same as garbage thrown away and trampled or destroyed. Family and community life with the condition of the young generation like this is clearly included in the category of humanitarian emergency. Poverty, ignorance, crime, illness, harassment and forced labor in factories or industries, were common situations of the young generation at that time. It seems that the loss of hope for the Church and society was very real. But Don Bosco was steadfast in his faith and humanitarian initiative underpinned by a change mentality for the better. Don Bosco was an original product of the enlightenment after the medieval period of the world. He wanted changes and new methods in education. He wanted his steadfastness of faith and humanitarian initiative to bring in society and the Church a hope of newness. It should start with the education of the younger generation, which in turn will create change and spread it around the world. The Letter to the Hebrews of today's reading reinforces us that, like Don Bosco, we have the responsibility to hold fast to hope, which is manifested by mutual concern and support in love among us. The light and strength that we have must be shareable. What is with us and what is shared will be added more and more by God. Let us pray. In the name of the Father... O Lord Jesus, make us bearers and spreaders of hope to our neighbors. Our Father who art in heaven... In the name of the Father...

It's Thursday, August 22nd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nicaragua shuts down 1,500 religious groups The government of Nicaragua announced on Monday it shut down 1,500 non-profit organizations. They include nearly 700 religious groups associated with Catholic, Evangelical, and Protestant denominations. Previously, the central American government focused on suppressing Catholic dissent to the regime. Now, Evangelical churches face the crackdown as well. Open Doors notes, “The situation has deteriorated significantly since 2018, when widespread protests broke out against the country's dictatorial regime. Christians have been among those to raise their voice—but it's coming at an alarming cost.” Nicaragua is ranked 30th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Geneva, Switzerland banned public baptisms An Evangelical church in Switzerland appealed to the European Court of Human Rights this week over public baptisms in Lake Geneva. Back in 2022, the Geneva State Council banned the church from celebrating baptisms in the lake. Earlier this year, a federal court ruled against the church, saying public baptisms could offend religious peace. Theologian John Calvin, whose ministry was based in Geneva in the 1540s, would have a cow! A press release from the church stated, “We stand up for the defense of the peaceful expression of faith and religious freedom, in private and in public.” Bulgaria Parliament banned sexual perversion promotion in schools Earlier this month, the Parliament of Bulgaria passed legislation banning the promotion of sexually perverted lifestyles in schools. The measure bans “propaganda, promotion or incitement in any way, directly or indirectly, in the education system of ideas and views related to non-traditional sexual orientation and/or gender identity other than the biological one.” The southeast European nation only recognizes marriages as between one man and one woman. However, politicians warn that “gender ideology” is creeping into Bulgarian schools. The radical Democratic Party Platform In the United States, the Democratic National Committee released its 2024 Party Platform on Sunday. The document is nearly 100 pages, much longer than the 16-page Republican Party Platform. Despite being released nearly a month after President Joe Biden dropped out the presidential race, the Democrat platform mentions him nearly 300 times. The platform also continues to push liberal agendas like protecting abortion and sexually perverted lifestyles at the federal level. Look at a fascinating side-by-side comparison of the Democrat Party Platform compared to the Republican Party Platform through a special link at www.TheWorldview.com. Oprah endorses Kamala Last night, in a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Oprah Winfrey endorsed Kamala Harris for president. WINFREY: “Soon, and very soon, we're going to be teaching our daughters and sons about how this child of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father -- two idealistic, energetic immigrants -- immigrants -- how this child grew up to become the 47th president of the United States!” (cheers) How can economy be Trump's fault if Kamala is in there now? But, despite Winfrey's eloquence, CNN political analyst Scott Jennings, a former assistant to President George W. Bush, made a cogent point last night, reports RealClearPolitics.com. JENNINGS: “The gap that I still see in all these speeches -- as good as they were -- [Kamala Harris] is in the White House right now. Democrats have controlled the White House for 12 of the last 16 years, and for all of the talk about division and the problems in the country, and people are hurting, Democrats have mostly controlled this country. “Trump had it for four. The Obamas and Biden had it for the rest of the time, and somehow, it's still all Trump's fault, and somehow, she hasn't been at the center of it. “To me, that is the glaring hole in this campaign that hasn't yet been solved at the convention. How do you explain all of the problems that will be solved by the person who is currently in there for the last 3.5 years and who is supposed to be already working on solving it?” Seven pro-life activists found guilty A Michigan jury found seven pro-life activists guilty on Tuesday. Their names are Chester Gallagher, Heather Idoni, Joel Curry, Justin Phillips, Cal Zastrow, his daughter Eva Zastrow, and 89-year-old Eva Edl who survived a Nazi concentration camp. The Biden administration charged the pro-lifers for peacefully protesting outside an abortion mill. The so-called Justice Department used a conspiracy against rights charge that was originally designed for the Ku Klux Klan, reports the Daily Wire. The pro-lifers face over 10 years in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. Despite this, they expressed their joy in the Lord Jesus after the trial. In Matthew 5:11-12, Jesus said, “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in Heaven.” Weak U.S. job growth Job growth in the U.S. was weaker than expected over the last year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found the U.S. added about 800,000 fewer jobs than reported between April 2023 and March of this year. It's the largest downward revision since 2009. The sectors with the biggest downward revisions were all in the private sector like professional and business services; leisure and hospitality; manufacturing; and trade, transportation, and utilities. Two American astronauts trapped aboard Space Station And finally, two American astronauts have been stuck in space for over two months. NASA Astronaut Barry Wilmore and test pilot Suni Williams made it safely to the International Space Station in early June aboard a Boeing Starliner. They were supposed to return shortly thereafter; however, they found the new spacecraft had propulsion system leaks and thruster failures. If the problems persist, they may not be able to return to Earth until next year. Despite this, the astronauts are holding on to their faith as fellow Christians pray for them on Earth. CBN News reports, “Wilmore's wife Deanna recently said her husband is content under the circumstances, knowing the Lord is in control.” Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” And, we would add, even as you orbit the Earth. ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR. Updates from day 143 of the conflict: International NGO Human Rights Watch, citing what it says is a 30% decline in the daily average number of aid trucks entering Gaza in recent weeks, accused Israel today of failing to comply with last month's International Court of Justice order to take "immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the adverse conditions of life faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip." Narrative Salchow and Sayenko Dual interview episode: Christina Salchow-Hommen from Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin, Germany. Her presentation at RehabWeek2019 was titled “Characterization Of Optimal Electrode Configurations For Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation.” The talk presented her findings from a small trial which included 5 participants living with spinal cord injuries. In the trial, they were trying to find the optimal placements and size of surface stimulation electrodes to elicit a response rectus femoris and the tibialis anterior muscles. The study found variability in electrode placement but some commonalities at the T11 level spinal circuit level. Let's catch up with her in our interview. Dimitry Sayenko from the Center for Neurogeneration at Houston Methodist Research Institute gave a talk about Neuromodulation of Spinal Networks to Recover Motor Function: Underlying Mechanisms and Clinical Translations.” His talk discussed the differences in the epidural spinal stimulation clinical trials being conducted at the University of Louisville, UCLA and at EPFL in Geneva Switzerland. There were differences among the labs but he found the key is enabling versus inducing movement with stimulation and argued that the intense exercise regimes from some of these studies is not necessary. Let's listen in on his interview. Takeaways: Electrode placement, along with stimulation parameters plays an important part in the responses to transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation. [0:00] Ladan introduces the episode with an interview by Jen French of Neurotech Reports with Christina Salchow-Hommen at RehabWeek 2019. [1:10] Salchow-Hommen introduces herself and her affilitation with technology for people with impairments for restoration of mobility. [1:38} Discussion of the importance of electrode placement, adjustment of stimulation parameters between the 5 volunteers and patient reported preferences for transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation for people with paralysis. [3:35] Salchow-Hommen discusses the need to better monitor the brain during stimulation and better measurement tools to quantify reported feedback. [4:44] Ladan introduces the episode with an interview by Jen French of Neurotech Reports with Dimitry Sayenko at RehabWeek 2019. [5:17] Sayenko introduces himself and addresses his perspective of how the brain reacts to spinal cord stimulation for the restoration of motor response after paralysis due to SCI. Nearly 80% of spinal cord injuries result in some form of residual function. [6:41] Involvement of the brain with restoration of movement along with neuroplasticity for connections in the brain. [8:28] Coupling traditional therapy with spinal cord stimulation. He finds that the intense rehab is not necessary but the first few sessions are critical. Still the technology has an accumulative effect. [9:45} Discussion of the introduction of electrical stimulation following a spinal cord injury. When to introduce it in therapy. [10:50] Restoration of gait and the timing of stimulation. His lab found timing was not critical. [11:50] The introduction of machine learning into this therapy would be helpful. Sayenko expresses his excitement at RehabWeek.

Originally hailing from Hungary, Katalin grew up in a tiny village, in the picturesque Transylvania, where she could often be found outdoors, exploring the countryside, or helping her parents with agricultural work. After finishing school, Katalin's curiosity pushed her to move to the city of Cluj and study “Tourism Geography”, and it was during that time that she started working in the hospitality industry. Katalin often speaks about starting from the disadvantage of not knowing any other alcoholic beverage except wine, beer, fruit distillates, never tried many basic food items, and had absolutely no idea about cocktails, but she was immediately mesmerized by this whole new world and quickly decided to become a bartender. In the present, Katalin is a well-traveled hospitality professional, with 16 years of bartending experience, and an extensive knowledge about exotic herbs, spirits, cocktails and homemade ingredients; but more importantly, she has dedicated her professional life to ensuring guests have amazing experiences in the bars in which she works. First, Katalin made a name for herself in London, as the Bar Manager of The Gibson Bar (at that time ranking 6th on the World's 50 Best Bars list), then as Bar Manager & multi award-winning bartender in Switzerland. She is currently working as Bar Manager of the newly opened Live Bar, M3 Groupe in Geneva. Katalin is a creative dynamo, or the “Swiss Tornado” - nicknamed by her industry peers. Katalin has consulted/advised for several artisanal spirit brands, she has judged international bartending competitions, and led presentations and trainings for bartenders across Europe. In the past few years, Katalin was also one of the International Judges of Tales Of the Cocktails Spirited Awards. Katalin's accomplishments include the following: Falstaff Magazine "Bar Woman of the Year" Award, 2019. ”Mixology Bar Awards” – Shortlisted in the Top 4 Bartenders of 2019. BRIFT Bar Convent "Best Mixologist Award", 2018. ”World Class Bartender of the Year” and Global finalist, 2018, Switzerland. Winner of International Team Competition “De Kuyper Bar Fights”, 2015. (00:10:45 or p.3 in the transcript)United States Capitol attack o on January 6, 2021, by a mob of supporters of Pres. Donald J.Trump. The attack disrupted a joint session of Congress convened to certify the results of thepresidential election of 2020, which Trump had lost to his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden. Because its object was to prevent a legitimate president-elect from assuming office, the attack was widely regarded as an insurrection or coup d'etat. The FBI and other law-enforcement agencies also considered it an act of domestic terrorism. For having given a speech before the attack in which he encouraged a large crowd of his supporters near the White House to march to the Capitol and violently resist Congress's certification of Biden's victory—which many in the crowd then did—Trump was impeached ched by the Democratic-led House of Representatives for “incitement of insurrection” ;he was subsequently acquitted by the Senate. Source: What is the Davos Forum and what is the agenda for 2022 meeting? (00:30:14 or p.7 in the transcript) For more than 50 years, the World Economic Forum, also known as the Davos Forum, has served as a global platform where leaders from business, government, international organizations, civil society and academia come together to address critical issues at the start of each year.Davos was established in 1971 in Geneva (Switzerland) as an “independent, impartial and not tied to special interests” non-profit organization. Its founder is Klaus M. Schwab, a professor at the University of Geneva, who initially invited 444 executives from European companies to a meeting on corporate governance in the convention center of Davos. His idea was to introduce the American business management approach to European firms. He never imagined that that meeting would lead to the unparalleled international summit that it is today.Thousands of ideas come out of the Davos Forum. Not all of them materialize, but some have come far: the North American Free Trade Agreement, signed between Canada, Mexico, and the United States, was first proposed at an informal meeting in Davos. In 2021, the forum had to be canceled because of the pandemic. The war in Ukraine and the human tragedy that it entails has forced a change of agenda. Leaders gathered in Davos must therefore address the challenges stemming from the conflict, yet not lose sight of longer-term environmental, technological and social priorities. The meetings are structured around six themes: 1) Promoting global and regional cooperation; 2) Ensuring economic recovery and building a new era of growth; 3) Building healthy and fair societies; 4) Safeguarding the climate, food supply and nature; 5) Promoting the transformation of industry; 6) Harnessing the power of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
I have known Heidi Pidcoke since the late 1990s, when we worked together at the Family Institute of Marin, a mental health nonprofit in Marin County, California. At the time Heidi was a Marriage and Family Therapy intern, working on earning her hours for clinical licensure. One of the great joys of my professional life is to be able to watch the people I've had a role in training go out in the world and build their careers, sometimes, as in the case of Heidi, careers that I've both admired and envied. I remember the hours spent in my office talking over weekly supervision like they were yesterday. Heidi's view of the world and of her role in it was expansive, having grown up for the first 11 years of her life in Brazil. Since then she has lived in California Philadelphia, and Texas in the United States, London and Pretoria South Africa, Nairobi, Kenya and Geneva Switzerland. Originally born in Brazil, Heidi is a 3rd culture person, a child who grows up in a culture different from the one in which his or her parents grew up. She is trilingual, fluent in Spanish and Portuguese as well as English. It is these experiences that we talk about in this episode of From Sparks to Light. Of a calling to serve others that led her to South Africa and then to Kenya. She talks about her work to heal the traumatic effects of generational violence through the mind body connection of somatic therapies. In this time when the world seems smaller than ever, we talk about what it means to be at home in the world.Heidi has a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Bryn Mawr University and a Masters in Psychology with an emphasis in Somatic Family Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a trained EMDR practitioner with a multilingual international practice. She currently lives in San Francisco, California with her cat Milla. Born in Arizona, Julio Santo Domingo instantly became an international star as his family moved to Geneva Switzerland just a month after his birth. An entrepreneur at an early age, he started a new radio show at his high school playing his favorite genre, Reggae. He named it simply “The Reggae Show.” This was just the beginning of a music career that would span the Atlantic and back over the next 3 decades. Building on his fledgling high school DJ career, Julio took his arts talents to the US and attended college at Boston University. Not satisfied with the music scene in Boston, he spent every possible weekend in New York City finding the best underground parties in warehouses and clubs. At the same time, he was expanding his musical interests and amassing a large electronic music collection. He realized he could DJ as well or better than any of the DJ's at the parties he was attending, so he decided to start his own parties and used the dawn of social media to promote them. After college he moved to NYC full time (where he still resides) to start a regular weekly Wednesday Reggae party at the legendary Belmont Lounge and an Electonic dance party called “Sheik and Beik.” He was in high demand and would also host industry nights and one-off warehouse parties including one infamous evening at “Supreme Trading” in Brooklyn. Julio tells the legend of this Halloween party complete with cleaning a floor covered in blood moments before his guests arrived. He was then booked for a DJ gig at Art Basel. At the time he was already thinking of hosting his own underground music tent at Bonnaroo when a friend who worked at that festival, resigned. The two got together and decided to start their own in Florida and the concept for the Okeechobee Music & Arts festival was born. His friend (Paul) found a great property and on Julio's way home from that Art Basel gig, he saw the land, bought it and it was game on. This is the 5th anniversary of Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival.
