Wine Talks with Paul Kalemkiarian
Family Philosophy Plays In The Provence. Gerard Bertrand Credits His Father For The Passion.

Gerard Bertrand had not been in Los Angeles for a few years. He comes every 4-5 years to put on a Master Class of the wines of the Provence. You see, he has been a major force in bring the wines from the area to the notice of the wine world. He forms biodynamicaly but keeps his ear to the ground as to what the market place is asking for. I was fortunate enough to catch him with a spare 40 minutes before he was on-stage exposing the virtues of his families heritage. Who knew that a winemaker could wax poetic about geology, spirituality, and diplomacy all in the time it takes to swirl a glass? Listeners tuning in to this episode of Wine Talks will discover that Monsieur Gérard Bertrand is no ordinary figure in the wine world—he's a philosopher in vintner's clothing, a passionate steward of the land, and a tireless advocate for capturing the "footprint of the vintage" in every bottle. Step into an illuminating conversation where you'll learn how wine is so much more than fermented grapes; it's an evolving tapestry of soil health, family tradition, and a vehicle for cross-cultural connection. Bertrand shares generational wisdom gleaned from his father, delves into the radical promises of biodynamic farming (think 47,000 links of underground life, not just a vineyard full of grapes), and reveals why wine's emotional resonance surpasses any other beverage—anchored, perhaps, in what he calls “the grace of God.” You'll hear why true excellence in winemaking isn't an accident, but the convergence of balance, intent, terroir, and soul, shaped over years of patience and experimentation. Beyond the vineyard, Bertrand explores wine's role in diplomacy and spirituality, reflecting on its unique ability to bring people together across religions, continents, and centuries. If you're curious about what it takes to move from an entry-level “good” to an “exceptional” glass, how the moon and microbial life can change the soul of a vineyard, or why pouring a bottle becomes a kind of ceremony, this episode offers a rare, intimate look. Prepare to have your notions of wine expanded, your sense of ritual deepened, and your next bottle charged with new meaning.

Bandol is arguably the most important appellation in Provence at the southeastern tip of France. Although it makes white, this very small region is known for its ageworthy reds and rosés made mainly of Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cinsault.   In this show I review the long history of Bandol from the Greeks to the real estate agents of today, and talk about the various terroirs in this appellation. I talk about the grapes, why Mourvedre makes such a big difference in allowing the reds and rosés to age, and some ideas of flavors, producers, and how long to age these wines. From the Rosés of Southern France by Liz Gabay, MW and Ben Bernheim   Since these are rosés that can age and ones that have more robust flavors, I wanted to do this show in the winter. I think it's good for us to think about different ways to look at pink wine, especially high-quality pink wine! And considering Bandol a multi-season wine is a great step in that direction!     ________________________________________________________________ Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Become a member today! www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople _______________________________________________________________   Check out my exclusive sponsor, Wine Access.  They have an amazing selection -- once you get hooked on their wines, they will be your go-to! Allysha Lavino is a talented writer, author, sacred explorer, and spiritual coach from California who lives in the wilds of Québec. During this fascinating conversation, Allysha shares many beautiful stories and insights. This includes her work with legendary documentary filmmaker and author, Henry Lincoln, who discovered sacred codes hidden within the buildings and landscape of southern France. He was also the co-author of the famous book - Holy Blood, Holy Grail.  As Allysha explains, the codes he found reveal ancient teachings that intertwine with the fundamentals of how our planet operates and how humans connect to it. And she has continued Lincoln's legacy by writing a ‘Visionary Fiction' novel - The Heretic -  which takes you on a magical adventure into the truths and legends of a bygone era, yet with so much contemporary significance. Weaving in and out of her own personal experiences with the sacred, Allysha shares how her spiritual journey was further ignited during a pilgrimage to Glastonbury in her early twenties. And how her ability to “see” unfolded, developing into an intuitive gift with which to support others. An ability that also blossomed as a natural embodiment, passed on through her lineage. Her knowledge of psychology and the influence of her mystic grandmother have enriched her understanding of the human experience and spiritual growth.  She is eloquent in her use of words and is deeply empathetic. She speaks with clarity and heart, making complex spiritual concepts accessible and relatable. And she is humble and knowing as she emphasises the importance of being, of re-establishing our natural flow of energy, and of her role as space holder for the magic within. Championing the wisdom of the crone archetype, Allysha encourages us to see the perceived invisibility of older women as a powerful and freeing state, rather than a disempowerment. Tune in to this episode to explore the mystical, the practical, and the deeply transformative journey of Allysha Lavino, and discover how her insights can guide you on your own path to spiritual awakening and self-discovery.   You can engage with Allysha in the following ways: Website: https://www.allyshalavino.com/  Social media channels: Twitter | LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook Buy Her Book on Amazon: Amazon UK | Amazon US   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Follow Behind Our Eyes on Instagram: @behindoureyes333  Connect with Liane on instagram: @lianelightsup   This podcast is brought to you by www.supareal.com  Information about Geo Love Healing: https://www.supareal.com/geo-love-healing    If you'd like to receive email updates about this podcast and other projects, please subscribe on the SupaReal site (bottom of the page).   Don't forget to subscribe :-) ---------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: Any practices shared on this podcast are not a replacement for or a form of therapy, nor are they intended to cure, treat, or diagnose medical conditions. This week is our South of France episode, which coincides with the Cannes Film Festival. Graydon Carter, a Co-Editor at Air Mail, tells us about the inspiration behind this special issue and takes us inside our party at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc. Then we have two great stories about movies: Josh Karp has the scoop on a film Dame Helen Mirren called “an irresistible mix of art and genitals”—the 1979 erotic historical drama Caligula, which starred Mirren, Malcolm McDowell, more than a few PenthousePets, and Gore Vidal. (Talk about an orgy of talent … ) Then Sam Wasson has the story of the five-time Academy Award–winning director who was so angry that he could not get financing for his film that he literally threw his Oscars out the window in a fit of apocalyptic rage—and, in the process, created the template for a new kind of indie filmmaker. Can you guess who that is? Sam will reveal the answer. All this and more make this a show you won't want to miss. On this week's episode, Melissa transports us to the South of France for a conversation with international hotelier Paddy McKillen about art, wine, architecture, and his passion project in Provence, Château La Coste. Villa La Coste, a 28 suite boutique hotel, sits on the grounds of the extraordinary 600-acre estate, Château La Coste, where you will also find an open-air contemporary art museum and winery.  In this episode, you'll learn how Paddy went from working at his parent's motor repair company in West Belfast to transforming a 300-year-old winery in the South of France into a wine estate and contemporary art park with a boutique 5-star hotel and incredible restaurants on site, including one from the Argentine celebrity chef and king of outdoor cooking, Francis Mallmann.  Between the outdoor art complex and culinary offerings, plus the state-of-the-art spa, immaculate pool area, and ultra-chic accommodations, there is good reason Melissa is excited to highlight the hotel and the massive art park at Chateau La Coste. It features works by some of the most notable names in contemporary art and architecture, with sculptures and buildings from Frank Gehry, Tadao Andao, Louise Bourgeois, Andy Goldsworthy, Tracy Emin, Sean Scully, and Ai Wei Wei, to name a few. The South of France is home to an expansive world of art. On this week's Destination Hack, Melissa takes you on a tour of inspiring locations, fabled collections, and natural phenomena across Provence.  Melissa's Art Recommendations in Provence: Towns of note: Aix en Provence, Arles, and Les BauxAttractions in Arles: Parc des Ateliers, Van Gogh Foundation, Musée Réattu, the Luma Foundation, Lee Ufan FoundationHotels in Arles: Les Maisons d'Arles (L'Arlatan and Le Cloitre) (Nord Pinus) Restaurants in and around Arles: Drum Cafe at the Luma Foundation, The restaurant at L'Arlatan; the outdoor café at Le Cloitre and La Chassagnette.Other highlights: visit Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the asylum where Van Gogh painted many of his most famous works; Carriere des Lumieres in Les Baux.   For more on Château La Coste, visit their websiteFollow Château La Coste on Instagram Learn more about Villa La Coste Follow Villa La Costa on Instagram Follow Melissa on Instagram.Learn more about Indagare Travel.
