Caterina Barbieri, Kali Malone, Moritz Von Oswald and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe discuss the role limitations play in the creative process, and whether they can be a source for creativity, if working with limitations helps sharpen one's aesthetics and define one's unique artistic voice, and whether human imagination needs limits to become limitless.Caterina Barbieri is a composer and modular synth artist whose sound draws from electronic, experimental and dance music. Her work is informed by an education in classical guitar and electro-acoustic composition at the Conservatory of Bologna, as well as the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and its famed centre for sound art, Elektronmusikstudion. She has spent a decade since her debut release, Vertical, breaking the rigid structures of electronic music and exploring how sound can induce both metaphysical and psycho-physical responses. Her most recent project, Myuthafoo, further investigates her interest in time, space, memory and emotion, and the links between them.Kali Malone is a composer and organist based in Stockholm. Her compositions are rich with harmonic texture through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation. In 2016 she co-founded the record label and concert series XKatedral, together with Maria W Horn, in Stockholm. Over the last few years she has released the critically acclaimed albums The Sacrificial Code, Living Torch, and Does Spring Hide Its Joy featuring Stephen O'Malley & Lucy Railton.Moritz Von Oswald is a dub techno pioneer producer and percussionist hailing from Berlin. He is the co-founder of production duo and record label Basic Channel. Prior to becoming one of the leading figures in electronic music in the 1990s, he played in one of the last incarnations of Palais Schaumburg. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has worked with many legendary artists including Juan Atkins, Thomas Fehlmann, Carl Craig and Tony Allen. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a Brooklyn-based artist, curator, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In 1997, he joined the band 90 Day Men before releasing solo projects under the moniker Lichens from 2004. He has collaborated on projects or provided sound in a featured artist capacity for such films as End of Summer, Sicario, Arrival, Last and First Men with Johann Johannsson and It Comes at Night with Brian McOmber. More recently, Robert has scored Il colpo del cane for Fulvio Risuleo, Candyman for Nia DaCosta, The Color of Care for Yance Ford and Master for Mariama Diallo.

Experimental composer Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Candyman) joins The Film Scorer podcast in the midst of the year-end blitz. Rob's latest score is for the vérité-style documentary Grasshopper Republic. As such, we spend much of the conversation talking about, and around, Rob's score, which is certainly among the most overlooked of the year. Along the way we talk about Rob's general style and approach, tackle the big questions around how to roll back the commodification of music, and more. Grasshopper Republic is currently playing in certain festivals while Rob's score, and much of his other music, is available on all major platforms through Invada. Meanwhile, you can find out more about Rob on his website.

He also shares his early childhood growing up in Lawrence and his struggle with childhood diabetes. In this episode, Matt shares how writer Frank Turner encouraged him to write his memoir, why the book helped him hit a welcomed rock bottom and why finishing the book put into a depression. He explains how a simple writing exercise evolved into Red Letter Days, why the editing process was foreign to him and how songwriting and story writing are similar in his process. The next instalment of our Mixtape series comes by Johanna Sulkunen, a Finnish experimental vocalist, composer & improviser based in Copenhagen. A mix of minimalistic sounds combined with vocal compositions to welcome the spring season.
For Johanna, the symbiosis of vocals and electronics have been at the centre of her career. A frequent collaborator with iconic jazz & improv musicians such as Tomasz Stanko, Axel Dörner, Koichi Makigami and originally labelled as an exciting voice on the alternative jazz scene, Sulkunen has expanded her range from jazz and alternative pop to free improvisation, electronic music and avant-garde.  Only a few months ago, Johanna release Terra, a collection of tracks where the artist invokes imaginary landscapes with her voice, electronics and a stellar ensemble. Terra also represents the second part of her trilogy with the solo project Sonority, in Terra Finnish experimental vocalist creates a global vision while being trapped in Copenhagen, and invites the listener to question our modern life and its often destructive relation to nature.

On Terra, she continues the work with Zen Buddhism and the koan as in her first release with her solo project, as well as her own lyrics, but she expands her musical space considerably and explores the transformation of the vocal language into instruments such as strings, horns and drums, letting the qualities of texts lead to the result. For this mixtape, she's selected a mixture of very minimalistic sound compositions, some vocal works, and some more ‘embracing' with strings and electronics: I think it intrigues you to listen to the details and allows you to let go of thinking and drift along with sound. I've been preparing the mix while sitting on a tour bus (or more of a tiny, totally packed car) and taking my own time between the concerts sitting alone with my headphones. Tracklist: 1. Robert was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his haunting work on the film, which has been shortlisted for Best Original Score at this year's Academy Awards. Shock World Service 072: Constellation Swan by Chloe Frieda (Alien Jams) 22/11/17 London, United Kingdom http://www.shockworldservice.com 1. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe & Ariel Kalma - Miracle Mile This whole album is amazing, a collaboration between Robert A. A. Lowe and Ariel Kalma called "We Know Each Other Now Somehow." It was released on RVNG in 2015. 2. Xordox - Diamonds This release came out this year on Editions Mego, a project helmed by JG Thirlwel with Noveller featured in three of the tracks. Shimmering synths morph into an intense horror soundtrack. 3. recsund - Hall of Waits This one is by my partner Clifford Sage, I also included a glimmer of this track at the very beginning of the mix, It's from his release Deadsounds V. 4. Charles Manier - Mesrop I have a few of Manier's records (an alias of Tadd Mullinix) and I always go back to them! Gritty, weird, EBM, industrial goodness, it's hard to pick one track from the record as there are so many great tracks to choose from. 5. Alek Stark - GC 4406 Alek Stark has an impressive discography, dating back to 2002, many of which I have yet to check out. This release on CPU is pretty solid, some beautiful electro here. 6. Reckonwrong - Morton This track is from Reckonwrong's release on Pinkman, it's a hard one to categorise. I love how this track unfolds, especially with the "I feel that my music is important" vocal sample. 7. Rings Around Saturn - Synchrotron Synthy perfection from this electro gem. 8. Jensen Interceptor- Carter's Green Factory Another one from the mighty Central Processing Unit, a Drexcyan beauty. 9. Dreams - Gut Bounce This one fits well amongst the Apron back-catalogue, with chugging acid lines and floating melodies. 10. Morphology - Darkstar (The Hacker Remix) This track is from a remix record with The Exaltics, JTC, Sync 24 and Deixis on the label Cultivated Electronics. Dark and brooding electro remix by the Hacker. 11. Echo 106 - From Brunnen to the Nile Euphoric electro, this is one of my favourites. 12. Wilted Woman - Heating Problem New record on Alien Jams :) 13. Terribilis - Alucarda Released on a Quantum Natives compilation "Seize the Means of Production," her set at the ICA this year was wonderful.

RADERE (CELE, Full Spectrum / Denver) Radere (@radere) is the alias of Carl Ritger – a guitarist and synthesist currently based in Denver, Colorado. His work primarily explores the shadowy gulf that exists between drone and noise, blurring traditional instrumentation, electronics, and location recordings into densely textured sonic monoliths. Radere’s recordings have found their way to light via a slew of independent labels, including Full Spectrum Records, Moodgadget Records, basic_sounds (RIP), and futuresequence. He also conducts ongoing collaborations with Sun Hammer, offthesky, Ten and Tracer, Cody Yantis, and Anduin; as well as John Templeton, alongside whom he comprises the experimental techno vehicle Coward. This mix is a recreation of a set he delivered at the New Romanticks launch party in Denver, Colorado on Labor Day. The city was bathed in the smoke of the burning American West. It choked the lungs and burned the eyes as oppressive heat rose from the dust. What was meant to be a fond farewell to summer 2k17 instead devolved into an endurance challenge of Herzogian proportions, befitting the funereal tenor of these selections. Existential hymns for a doomed desert caravan. Artwork by Chris Cole Stream / download all Deep Club Podcasts here: soundcloud.com/deepclubdenver/sets/deep-club-podcasts TRACKLIST: 01.
