Vision Sunday 2024 - Sarah Cowan Johnson & Andrew Mook by
We all pray for our children to form a strong relationship with Jesus that will last a lifetime. But the truth is, many young adults walk away from their faith once they move out. So what steps can we take to help our kids walk with Him throughout all the stages of their lives? Today's guest, Sarah Cowan Johnson, shares that a big part of the answer when we look at statistics lies in our parenting. Sarah is a ministry trainer, consultant, and coach who works with ministry leaders across the United States and leads seminars on family discipleship—showing parents how to help their children walk in the way of Jesus. Sarah shares key strategies for faith-based parenting in her book Teach Your Children Well: A Step-by-Step Guide for Family Discipleship. In this episode, Sarah explains the most common pitfalls that stop parents from working worship into their home lives (and how to overcome them), how to disciple children no matter how long they may live under your roof, why it's essential to let your kids ask questions and develop their own relationships with God, and so much more. Maybe you're a parent, a teacher, part of a kids ministry, or a babysitter in the midst of teaching or parenting kids. No matter what your role is, you may be overlooking the discipleship aspect of leading children. We are seeing high numbers of children who grow up and abandon their faith. The calling of parenthood is to raise our children in the fear of the Lord. Yet, as all Christian parents know, this calling is easily lost in the chaos of life. We are juggling the various responsibilities of our households and the shifting challenges of raising our kids. In the midst of all this, how are we to teach our children to love God? My guest on today's show is Sarah Cowan Johnson, the author of Teach Your Children Well, and she helps us to accept the calling of parenthood with wisdom and faith. Adam Griffin, Cassie Bryant, and Chelsea Griffin are joined by Sarah Cowan Johnson to talk about her new book “Teach Your Children Well: A Step-by-Step Guide for Family Discipleship,” and how we can live as the creative minority in today's culture.Questions Covered in This Episode:Sarah, would you introduce yourself and tell us about you, your family, your ministry, and a little of your sports resume?Your new book is called, “Teach Your Children Well: A Step-by-Step Guide for Family Discipleship.” Tell us the story about writing this book where did the idea come from and why did you want to write it?You kick off the book talking about the research that shows how many kids are walking away from the church after high school. What do we take away from that? Can you describe what you mean by a “high grace and high challenge” and why that is important? Why is it so hard for parents to believe they have this grace and freedom and this weighty calling simultaneously? Why is living in a post-Christian culture changing or clarifying the role of families to disciple their kids in today's culture? Will you help us understand what the common responses of fight, flight, or camouflage look like for a church or a family? Why do you think that camouflage temptation is so strong for us as parents and how do we get past it? What do you think we should be doing instead? You talk about our churches and families forming a “creative minority” similar to Daniel and his friends in Babylon. What would that actually look like for families? Can you talk about what capturing a God moment is and how you encourage parents to go about doing this? You talk about our temptation for fear, control, and disbelief. How do you want parents to address and face those temptations when they do come?Your book has a lot of questions for readers to answer as well as ideas to try out. Would you share with our listeners some of your favorites that you've used at home? If our listeners want to pray for you and your family, what can they ask God for on your behalf?Guest Bio:Sarah Cowan Johnson is a ministry trainer, consultant, and coach based in Providence, RI. We will follow Jesus faithfully in a culture that doesn't. In seventeenth-century Europe, some of the wealthiest women in the world were doing something strange with the ceramic jars in their curiosity cabinets. They were eating them. But these clay pieces from Mexico—called búcaros—weren't just some bizarre snack. They were seen as a piece of the “New World,” one you could touch, smell, and taste. They were so well known that they even made it into the foreground of masterpiece paintings. But what is the real story behind these jars? Who is preserving this centuries-old ceramic tradition, and what does it mean to be one of the few artists who still works with this specific, sensuous clay? Guests: Fernando Jimón Melchor, master ceramics artisan from Tonalà, Mexico Federico Carò, research scientist, Scientific Research, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Margaret Connors McQuade, Deputy Director & Curator of Decorative Arts, The Hispanic Society Museum & Library Ronda Kasl, curator of Latin American Art, The American Wing, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, professor and historian of science and medicine at the University of Texas Featured object: Covered jar (Búcaros), ca. 1675–1700. Our world is desperately lonely and disconnected, but the resurrection of Jesus unleashes a new kind of friendship that stands in stark contrast to what we currently know. Stories of hope & practical tips for cultivating friendship in a culture of isolation.
Juno Steel’s first day back on the job has started well: he’s outnumbered, cornered, and almost certainly going to be killed any second now. Just life as usual in the PI business. This case may be typical, but the solution will prove anything but. The mystery, after all, is one of the strangest Juno has ever encountered: who kidnaps a woman’s cat… just to replace it with an exact copy of the one they’ve stolen? Welcome to the Penumbra, dear Traveler. We hope you enjoy your journey. (Note: Trigger warnings for all episodes will now be posted at the bottom of the episode description. Epiphany Sunday - Sarah Cowan Johnson
Jane Bowyer joins me to talk about celebrating inspiring women through creativity in her recent exhibition, 'Women In Print.' The Manchester based show sees 16 designers and artists each creating a piece of work celebrating 16 women from Manchester and surrounding areas. We discuss Jane's recent shift to freelance design, how she made the exhibition happen and shares some tremendous stories including how a lady from Leigh is revered in Japan.
