Covert narcissistic abuse doesn't just hurt you — it rewires you. In this episode, Renee breaks down why your fight/flight response gradually turned into fawning, and why that isn't a character flaw — it's survival. You'll learn why fight, flight, freeze, and fawn aren't random reactions. They're a hierarchy based on how much self-advocacy you feel you have. And in a covert narcissistic relationship, that self-advocacy gets quietly, systematically dismantled — until fawning becomes your automatic default. In this episode: Why the four trauma responses are actually a hierarchy of self-advocacy How covert narcissists punish fight, flight, and freeze — and reward fawning Why so many survivors grew up already partway down this hierarchy How a controlling or narcissistic parent trained you for this dynamic long before you met your partner Why religious upbringings can add a powerful layer of conditioning — and why this topic is getting its own full episode Why you keep ending up in narcissistic relationships — and why it has nothing to do with bad luck Why healthy relationships can actually feel uncomfortable to a nervous system wired for chaos This is episode one of a three-part series. Episode two will look at what this hierarchy looks like in your day-to-day life. Episode three will explore what it actually means to start rebuilding your self-advocacy. If you've ever asked yourself "why do I keep ending up here?" — this episode is for you. Learn more about Renee's coaching program at covertnarcissism.com. Often because of trauma survivors have an automatic, uncontolled response to perceived danger. Are these responses really uncontollable? Or can we find ways to recognize and manage them? What are the ways these responses affect us.As survivors of trauma sometimes these responses cause their own trauma because we feel that we have no control over them. Then we experience regret and grief about how we handle our response. It can be helpful to recognize what our patterns are when we respond and what are the incidents that cause our reactions.
Hey daar lieve luisteraar, Lou hier. Met een nieuwe uitzending van the Miracle Town Radio Show. Als deze aflevering een lead jingle zou hebben zou dat zijn:
*This episode was originally published in July, 2023. In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Chuck DeGroat to talk about the natural reactivity we have to anxiety. We've talked a lot about fight and flight, conflict and distancing, but we don't always add two other instinctive reactions: freeze and fawn. We may aspire to peace-making but we often settle for peace keeping and people-pleasing. When we can see our fawn response, we can stop hiding and courageously choose genuine connection instead. Conversation Overview: Chuck's tweet that inspired this conversation How does the fawn response mimic healthy connection while also undermining it? How does the fawn response show up in leadership? How do we connect the fawn response to anxiety? What might we do instead of fawning? Episode 111: "JD's Eighteen Months In Fight, Flight, and Freeze" Recently, JD spent 18 months navigating uncertainty, professional identity shifts, financial recalibration, and invisible pressure. He didn't think he was “falling apart.” He thought he was adapting. Surviving. Doing what adults do. But when a new opportunity emerged and his stress levels suddenly dropped, he realized something sobering: he had normalized living in a high-cortisol state — and his body had paid the price. In this episode of Staying Power, Ashley and JD explore how chronic stress becomes invisible, what it does to the brain and body over time, and how to bring yourself back from survival mode — even when life legitimately demands a lot from you.

When your child's nervous system is stuck in fight, flight, or freeze, even minor frustrations can trigger explosive outbursts, shutdowns, or runaway behavior. It isn't disobedience—it's the autonomic nervous system in survival mode.Let us unpack why kids get trapped in these stress responses and how calming the brain first restores safety, regulation, and connection. Why does my child melt down after minor frustrations? When your child yells, slams doors, or shuts down over something small, it's not misbehavior—it's a stress response. Their sympathetic nervous system is in overdrive, pumping out stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.Signs your child's nervous system is stuck in fight, flight, or freeze:Frequent emotional meltdowns and explosive outburstsOverreaction to minor frustrations with big emotionsNeeds 20–30 minutes (or more) to return to calmMood changes, poor focus, and low energy that linger afterwardBehavior is communication. What looks like defiance is really your child's nervous system waving a red flag for help. What does fight, flight, freeze, or fawn look like in kids?Kids react to stress in different ways, but all of these behaviors come from the same alarm system in the nervous system.Fight: yelling, arguing, aggression, lashing outFlight response: running away, hiding, avoiding tasksFreeze response: zoning out, poor concentration, blank stares, silenceFawn: perfectionism, hypervigilance, people-pleasing (often missed)These are autonomic survival responses—not bad choices.

In this episode we explore the activated nervous system state—better known as fight-or-flight. If you've ever felt anxious, tightly wound, or like your body just can't stop, this one's for you. We explore why your system gets stuck in this high-alert state and, most importantly, provide a practical toolkit to help you work with your nervous system, not against it. Learn why "just calm down" doesn't work and what to do instead to find real regulation.*This episode serves as Part 2 in our "Different States Series"In this episode, you'll learn:What activation actually is and how it shows up in the bodyThe difference between fight and flight energyWhy your system gets stuck in this stateWhat anxiety is trying to tell you through a parts work lensThe most effective in-the-moment tools to help discharge activationWhat doesn't work (and why forcing calm can backfire)The deeper work required to shift out of chronic activation for good3 Takeaways:Your anxiety isn't random. It's your body saying: “Something doesn't feel safe.” Instead of asking "How do I stop this?" ask "What is my body trying to tell me?"Different states need different support. An activated body needs to move and discharge energy. Trying to force stillness often backfires. The goal isn't to just calm down; it's to help your body complete the stress response.Reactive tools are scaffolding for deeper work. In-the-moment tools are crucial for managing activation, but the long-term goal is to create a life your nervous system doesn't feel the need to constantly escape from by addressing the root causes.Categories of Tools for Activation mentioned in this episode:Movement – march in place, shake out your limbs, push against a wall, stomp, dance, go for a walkBreath (but not deep breathing) – try a physiological sigh (two inhales, one slow exhale), or blow air like you're cooling soupVision resets – slowly scan your environment, do lateral eye movements, shift focus from near to farSensory grounding – cold water, textured objects, strong scents like peppermint or citrusPatterned action – folding laundry, swaying, rocking, tapping rhythmsVoice and sound – humming, shushing, singing, or whispering soothing phrases like “I'm okay, I'm not in danger, I'm safe enough right now.”Parts Work: bring in the parts work perspectiveThe goal of these tools isn't to shut down the activation—it is to help complete it. They use up the energy your body has mobilized. And they begin to signal: “We're okay now.”—Looking for more personalized support?Book a FREE discovery call for RESTORE, our 1:1 anxiety & depression coaching program (HSA/FSA eligible & includes comprehensive bloodwork)Join me inside Regulated Living, a mental health membership and nervous system healing space (sliding scale pricing available)Order my book, Healing Through the Vagus Nerve today!*Want me to talk about something specific on the podcast?
