The COVID-19 pandemic has placed enormous stress on small businesses and their workers, as closures and new public safety measures have demanded that business owners shift operations and take creative steps to keep employees and customers safe. In this extraordinary time, small business owners are increasingly aware that the wellbeing of their employees is essential for business survival – and they are forging new partnerships and taking new approaches to support their workers. Watch this discussion, hosted by the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program and the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, to learn about strategies that small business owners and workforce organizations can take to strengthen job quality for frontline workers in the wake of COVID-19. In this session, we hear from two restaurant owners in Baltimore, along with a workforce professional who helped them prioritize job quality through the pandemic. The panel features Gayatri Agnew, Senior Director, Opportunity, Walmart.org (opening remarks); Shawn Parker, Co-Owner, Connie's Chicken and Waffles; Laura Wagner, Co-Owner, Well Crafted Kitchen; Allie Busching, Former Business Development Coordinator, Civic Works; Jenny Weissbourd, Senior Project Manager, The Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program (moderator); and Tom Strong, Director of Employer Activation, National Fund for Workforce Solutions (moderator). Baltimore business owners share their experiences operating restaurants during this challenging time. And they explain how and why they chose to partner with Civic Works to invest in their employees as a resiliency strategy. Allie Busching shares her experiences using Pacific Community Ventures' Good Jobs, Good Business toolkit and providing business advising support to Baltimore-based small businesses. This webinar is the eighth in our Job Quality in Practice series. The Job Quality in Practice series is designed to support practitioners across fields – including workforce development, economic development, capital deployment, policy, worker advocacy, and business – to address job quality in their work. Webinars share updates on current conditions and priorities as well as actionable tools and approaches. We also seek to highlight leading practitioners' work and create connections across disciplines. We are grateful to Prudential Financial for its support of our Job Quality in Practice webinar series and our ongoing efforts to advance a job quality field of practice. The Economic Opportunities Program advances strategies, policies, and ideas to help low- and moderate-income people thrive in a changing economy. We recognize that race, gender, and place intersect with and intensify the challenge of economic inequality and we address these dynamics by advancing an inclusive vision of economic justice. For over 25 years, EOP has focused on expanding individuals' opportunities to connect to quality work, start businesses, and build economic stability that provides the freedom to pursue opportunity. Across the nation, COVID-19 has taken its toll on the childcare industry…either shutting down programs completely or reducing enrollment capacity due to CDC and health department requirements. Now many programs here in Georgia are gradually reopening and trying to determine how best to use federal aid issued through the CARES Act. To assist these programs, DECAL and Quality Care for Children have been hosting a series of webinars to help with financial success after COVID-19 and guidance on using the CARES funding. Joining us to talk about the webinars and some important advice for childcare programs is Monique Reynolds, Director of Early Childhood Education Business Support Services with Quality Care for Children, and Laura Wagner, Community Outreach and Partnership Director for Quality Innovations and Partnerships here at DECAL.Support the show (http://www.decal.ga.gov)

Laura is a psychotherapist, life coach, fitness guru, model, writer, and speaker… basically, there’s nothing she can’t do! And she uses that attitude to help other women create extraordinary lives, too.In this episode, Kim and Laura talk about…Progress versus perfection—how important it is to recognize all the things you’ve accomplished, no matter how “small” they may seem.Understanding that your value and self-worth are not determined by your accomplishments, and how difficult it can be to shift to that mindset. Laura’s emotional battle to recover from multiple miscarriages, and her current struggle with degenerative arthritis and chronic pain, and how she learned to be resilient in the face of hardship. You can be a badass woman and still have vulnerabilities—that’s what makes us all human.About LauraLaura Wagner is a licensed psychotherapist, life coach, and fitness professional—essentiallya personal development blonde bombshell—on a mission to inspire and teach women howto empower their minds and bodies, and create an extraordinary life. This four-story brick former hotel building in downtown Portland's West End dates to 1910, but the restaurant on its ground floor, Jake's Famous Crawfish, goes all the way back to 1892. Its fresh-caught seafood as well as its wood-and-polished-brass environs have attracted not just a who's who of locals but movie stars like Humphrey Bogart and his Portland-raised wife of the 1930s and '40s, actress Mayo Methot. In our first interview, film historian Laura Wagner discusses the rocky Methot-Bogart marriage and its Portland ties. The second interview features Jake's general manager Brian McConnell as well as Missy Maki, who oversees sales for the restaurant’s parent company, McCormick & Schmick’s restaurants, as we discuss this landmark eatery's present and future.

Today's guest on The Successful Pitch is Laura Wagner, who is the CEO and founder of Digitzs, which is changing the way we are going to pay for things. She assembled an amazing team of people from Apple and PayPal and even Kevin Harrington who was one of the original Shark Tank judges. She said, “Everybody wants to be needed and wanted. If you trust and like and admire these people to get them on your team first, then you show investors who else cares about your idea.” She was able to raise millions of dollars on equity crowdfunding platform, Crowdfunder, by having this amazing team of people who believed in her vision to raise money to get it built and now they're on their second round of funding and have their first revenue coming in.

Juno Steel’s first day back on the job has started well: he’s outnumbered, cornered, and almost certainly going to be killed any second now. Just life as usual in the PI business. This case may be typical, but the solution will prove anything but. The mystery, after all, is one of the strangest Juno has ever encountered: who kidnaps a woman’s cat… just to replace it with an exact copy of the one they’ve stolen? Welcome to the Penumbra, dear Traveler. We hope you enjoy your journey. (Note: Trigger warnings for all episodes will now be posted at the bottom of the episode description. Detective Steel is in a slump, and Maia King might have just the case to bring him out of it. One problem: half the case is going to be figuring out what the case even is, because if Ms. King is to be believed, the culprit would have to be… well, something that doesn’t exist. In all likelihood, this is the end. The only question is: the end of how much? The end of Juno Steel… that’s pretty likely. Alone in a Martian tomb, Peter Nureyev gone, and Miasma’s experiments drawing to a close. Juno will outlive his usefulness any minute now, and if Miasma has her way he won’t outlive for long. And if it’s the end of Juno Steel it may well be the end of Mars, too: with Miasma’s hands on the Egg of Purus, a superweapon strong enough to destroy the entire Ancient Martian civilization, this human civilization doesn’t stand much of a chance. What does Miasma have planned for that Martian wasteland? Where is Peter Nureyev? And just how much will Juno Steel lose? Because surely, this is the end, the final resting place… but how much will end here, today? Welcome to the Penumbra, dear Traveler. We hope you enjoy your stay. Who is Peter Nureyev? The question has dogged Juno Steel, Private Eye for six months now, ever since he first met that master of disguises. It doesn’t help that he changes identities like most people change clothes: Rex Glass, Duke Rose, Miasma’s anonymous “the Thief…” How is Juno supposed to know who he is? How is Juno supposed to trust him? He needs to know he can, because the clock is ticking. Miasma’s experiments on Juno won’t last forever, and once his usefulness has passed she’ll kill the both of them. In the hunt for a crime boss's murderer, Detective Juno Steel and Agent Rex Glass have ended up somewhere very peculiar: a game show. Well, it should be peculiar. But in the house of the Kanagawas, Hyperion City's premier crime-family-slash-entertainment-network, nothing is peculiar so long as it's caught on camera. In the eyes of a camera you can sell anything: a mad genius's horrific game show; an ancient death mask that kills whoever disturbs it; and even, strangest of all, a Detective and Special Agent who really think they have a shot at surviving this mess. (Note: this episode is a rewrite, recasting, and remaster of the original "Juno Steel and the Case of the Murderous Mask (Part 1)," and is our recommended jumping-on point for the series. If you're curious about changes made, the original version of "Murderous Mask" can be found on our website at thepenumbrapodcast.com.) Juno Steel has had a lot of clients in his time, high-profile and low. But when he’s called in to investigate the murder of Croesus Kanagawa, head of the Kanagawa crime-family-slash-entertainment-network, it’s not the client that interests him. It’s what Croesus was wearing when he died – and an ancient curse that hangs over that very strange mask. Welcome to the Penumbra, dear Traveler. We hope you enjoy your stay.
