Canoe journeys are rigorous, challenging trips that go for hundreds of miles.  Each year, canoe “families” from different tribal nations paddle between villages on the Salish Sea, joining local celebrations and ceremonies along the way. They camp at each stop until reaching that year's destination tribal site.  For indigenous people who take part, it's an important way to connect with their culture as well as other tribes. It's also a chance to explore nature and their own inner strength.  The Lummi Youth Canoe Family took its last journey in 2019. Now, two brothers are trying to revive the group. Raven and Free Borsey first joined the Lummi Youth Canoe Family in 2013.The twin brothers say joining the group as teenagers changed their trajectory in life and gave them a better understanding of the natural world. Now, more than a decade after their first canoe trip, the twin brothers have received the Bullitt Prize, a $100,000 dollar grant from Washington Conservation Action aimed at developing young environmental leaders in the state, under the age of 35.  Their goal is bringing the trips back for new generations of Lummi youth and expanding the programming year round. Host Tiokasin Ghosthorse spends the hour with Steven Solomon, Sr., a lifelong Lummi fisherman and traditional knowledge holder of the reef net practice. “Reef net fishing is an ancient, sustainable salmon-harvesting technique created and perfected by the Lummi and other Coast Salish Indigenous people over a millennium. Rather than chasing the fish, this technique uses ropes to create an artificial reef that channels fish toward a net stretched between two anchored boats. Fishers observe the water and pull in the net at the right moment, intercepting salmon as they migrate from the Pacific Ocean to the Fraser River near present-day Washington state and British Columbia. Colonialism, government policies, habitat destruction, and declining salmon populations have separated tribes from this tradition. Today, only 12 reef net permits exist, with just one belonging to the Lummi Nation. Many tribal members hope to revive reef net fishing to restore their cultural identity and a sustainable salmon harvest but face difficulties balancing economic realities with preserving what the Lummi consider a sacred heritage.” — Liz Kimbrough, author, “Last of the reef netters: An Indigenous, sustainable salmon fishery,” Mongabay, Nov. 21, 2023: https://bit.ly/3IlGIk9 Production Credits: Tiokasin Ghosthorse (Lakota), Host and Executive Producer Liz Hill (Red Lake Ojibwe), Producer Karen Ramirez (Mayan), Studio Engineer, Radio Kingston Tiokasin Ghosthorse, Audio Editor Kevin Richardson, Podcast Editor Music Selections: 1. An interview with filmmaker Brooke Swaney and actor Kendra Mylnechuk who speak about their respective work on the documentary film Daughter of a Lost Bird. This is a write-up on the film from the Human Rights Watch film festival: This beautifully personal film documents her journey as she discovers her Native identity—finding her birth mother, April, also a Native adoptee, and returning to her Lummi homelands in Washington State. In Daughter of a Lost Bird, Kendra and April's stories show the impact of intentional government actions to erase an entire culture, including the 1958 Indian Adoption Project, which removed Native children from their families and placed them in white homes in an effort to “kill the Indian and save the man.” This poignant story shows, as James Baldwin rightfully put it: "History is not the past. It is the present. We carry our history with us.” “I identified as white. This strange confusion of white guilt, and native anger. Where does it sit in me? And how do I sit with both of those things?” —Kendra Mylnechuk Potter, film participant, Daughter of a Lost Bird Music on this edition is by The Halluci Nation.

Brittney Griner is 6 foot 9. She's an American basketball player, some say she's the greatest female basketball player of all time and she is currently being detained in Russia on drug charges that could carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Overnight Russian courts have extended her detention for two more months. All this while tensions between Russia and the States remain tense and her family worry she may be used as a political pawn. Molly McElwee, the Telegraph's Women's Sports reporter explains. To mark Red Nose Day Ena Miller visits a Comic Relief supported project helping survivors of domestic abuse. At Tower House Horses they use equine assisted learning to help women improve their mental health and recover their confidence. A woman we are calling Sophie tells her story and Susie, one of the co-founders of the project, explains how horses help women who have been through trauma. Yesterday the government set out its plans to address racial disparities in the UK with changes to policing, health and education. Inclusive Britain: the government response to the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities sets out 70 plans including ones to tackle the differences in maternal health to ones referring to police powers. There also includes a plan to get a diverse panel of historians to, as the report puts it, ‘develop a new knowledge rich History Curriculum by 2024 exploring Britain's historical past'. But how would that actually work in practice? Kendra Mylnechuk Potter was adopted into a white family and raised with no knowledge of her Native background. A new film 'Daughter of a Lost Bird' currently showing at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival follows Kendra as she connects with her birth mother April, also a Native adoptee, and discovers her Lummi homelands in Washington state. Her story has parallels with many of those children affected by the 1958 Indian Adoption project, where Native children in the US were removed from their families and placed in white homes, dubbed by some as' cultural genocide'. In the late1970s the Indian Child Welfare Act came into force which prioritised keeping native Indian children within their own tribes. Anita speaks to Kendra and to the filmmaker Brooke Pepion Swaney. The history of civil rights changed when Barbara Lisicki met Alan Holdsworth. The two were disabled cabaret performers in the 1980s when they met, fell in love and founded the disabled people's Direct Action Network (DAN). They became the driving force behind the campaign that ultimately led to the passing of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act. A new BBC Two drama, Then Barbara Met Alan, tells their story. Young and Indigenous Presents Oomagelees Cynthia Wilson from Lummi- another one of our beloved elders. She is a Lummi Language teacher. She didn't just teach me language, though, she taught me how to sing, dance and make give away items for ceremonies. She taught us many things about our culture. I am thankful she did because I would have never known these valuable cultural traditions without her. We talk about the importance of Lummi Language in this episode while having a general conversation. She has been a teacher in our community since I started elementary school. I am 26 now so she has been teaching us for a long time. She speaks the language and returns it back to our community; again, I find this very important because our language was almost lost except for a few elders speaking and preserving it. She has gifted the language to so many children and I can't imagine how thankful our ancestors are for her contributions to our community. Hy'shqe and thank you for all that you do for us in our Lummi community- our hands go up to you o/ I also want to bring light to the fact that her father was taken from his family as a child and placed in a residential school. Cynthia says that they would take the older child of siblings because they wouldn't want them to be teaching the culture to the younger ones. You will get to hear the story of how that happened and the reason for this. I want to bring awareness on the subject of the 215 children and how our people were a part of the residential school era as well. The things that happened need to be acknowledged because we didn't ask for it, it was forced on us.

In this podcast episode I'm sitting down with one of our dearest and beloved elders, Juanita Jefferson, who tells many stories from her time. Lummi Language is sacred to us and was almost lost back in the 1800's when residential schools were brought upon us. The choice to speak our language was taken from us. Someone decided that we were too savage, that we needed to be put in school to learn not in our ways but theirs. In this interview, we get to hear the many things that she has done for our community and she speaks about other valued elders as well. These elders worked hard to create the different programs to provide for our people- things like education, healthcare, and jobs. These opportunities were needed for our people to survive in the ever changing external society. One of my favorite stories is about our late Chief Bill James; he was one of our main fluent Lummi language speakers and is also my uncle. Juanita talks about how a group of elders got together and started speaking Lummi after not being able to speak it for so long because they were too afraid of their own children getting killed or beaten for learning and speaking our own language. The elders were traumatized from the abuse they suffered being forced to relocate to residential schools, however they decided as adults to keep the language alive. Bill was just a child then and being that young and being surrounded by a group of elders that know our language fluently was special. He got to experience and learn from hearing the language which turned into him helping to preserve our language. He was so pure that he soaked all that knowledge back as he got older the very thing he did was give that language back to our people for our future generations to learn and preserve. Hy'shqe to the many elders who fought for our language to be here today and to our ancestors above who believed. They had HOPE. Hy'shqe to everyone who participated in this podcast episode.

We hope that after listening you will join us on a journey of giving a voice back to our sacred ancestor, the salmon.  Noutsiam friends and family, Children of the Setting Sun Productions is embarking on a journey to unite tribal nations in order to save our most sacred ancestor, the salmon. The Young and the Indigenous team will follow CSSP to collaborate with Indigenous communities who identify as the Salmon People to create a podcast series with the youth from these tribes. We plan to have a podcast with youth from each tribe who are involved which are: Lummi, Yurok, Umatilla, Shuswap, Swinomish and Yakima Nation. In each episode we hope to encourage the youth to think about their personal or cultural connection to the salmon and what that means to their community as a whole.  The larger focus is, “who are we without salmon?” We have to pose this daunting question as we address the rapid decline of this keystone species while also supporting the tribes who are fighting to keep their fish populations alive.
