The New York Yankees pitchers and catchers have reported to Tampa, and there are already injuries to discuss. Would it be Yankees' Spring Training without at least one injury? Aaron Boone spoke to the media in Tampa and let them know that Scott Effross, who was recovering from Tommy John surgery, had a back problem crop up in the fall, and he elected to have surgery for that injury in early December. Boone says Effross is expected back in the summer. Next, Jose Trevino injured his calf while training during the offseason, and he has a strain. Both players are already working their way back, and Boone said to expect Trevino to miss the first couple of weeks of Spring Training games. Then, Lou Trivino, who was non-tendered by the Yankees just a little while ago, showed up to camp and reportedly signed a one-year deal with the club worth $1.5M with performance incentives and a 2025 club option. Trivino is also working his way back from Tommy John surgery and is expected to come back sometime in the summer. And finally, the Yankees traded RHP prospect Joshua Quezada for LHP reliever Clayton Andrews. David, Justin and James put a bow on Aaron Judge's regular season. Coney believes the return to “the art of pitching” is what he'll remember the most about the 2022 regular season. We also talk about Jeremiah Estrada's debut and how exciting he looks as a late inning reliever, and Seiya Suzuki's offensive adjustments (good!) and defense (less good than we thought!). The Yankees answered our wishes of riding the wave of the Josh Donaldson walk-off slam into a return to their first-half winning ways. They just had the wipe out, face-first on the sand for a few days before picking themselves back up (obviously). But after losing three in a row at home to Toronto and hearing choirs of boos at Yankee Stadium while Aaron Boone fumed in the postgame, they've actually put some wins together for the first time in quite awhile. New York salvaged the finale against the Blue Jays to avoid a sweep and then won back-to-back games against a tough foe in the Mets, even beating Max Scherzer in the process. That's definitely something to build off of, but they can't stop there. A long West Coast trip through Oakland and Anaheim lies ahead, and the Yankees can't take any games for granted, even against those struggling ballclubs. They'll have Giancarlo Stanton back in their lineup, and while the bullpen has lost some names in the past week (most notably Scott Effross), Clay Holmes should be on track to return in Anaheim and the long-absent Zack Britton is on the rehab trail as well. Andrew and Kunj discuss all the ups and downs of the past week while praising the minor league promotions, big hits from Andrew Benintendi, and more monster blasts from the home run crown-seeking Aaron Judge. They also talk about the 2023 schedule, the B-Ref update, and as always, the Yankee and Manfred of the Week. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Hour 1 Boomer & Gio are both out so it's Jerry & Sal today. We start with Sal's vacation out east and he could not believe there are $30 million homes on Long Island. Then we get into the Yankees and Jerry says they have been lousy. Sal wonders who the Yankees really are. Are they the team we are seeing now or the team we watched in the first half of the season? We talked about the Kay-Rod broadcast with Derek Jeter as a guest. With Jerry hosting, C-Lo is in the update chair. He starts with the Mets beating the Phillies and their announcers seem to think the Mets are dinking and dunking hits. The Mets have done a great job of not giving up many runs at all lately. They also talked about the Kay-Rod cast with Derek Jeter and the Jeter documentary. The Yankees & Red Sox game lasted only 2 hours & 15 min last night and the Yankees lost 3-0. We wonder where Giancarlo Stanton has been. Sal overslept and missed the first hour of his show last week. In the final segment of the hour, we talk about Isiah Kiner-Falefa's first HR and John Sterling's HR call. Jerry loves it, Sal doesn't care for it. Jerry plays some of Sterling's HR calls from people you don't even remember were on the Yankees.  Hour 2 The 7am hour starts with the Zach Wilson injury from Friday night. Sal talked about the importance of having a pocket QB. When you have a running QB like Zach Wilson, your chance of injury goes way up. They also talked about Daniel Jones' future with the Giants. Sal thinks Zach Wilson has the ‘It' factor. Jerry does not. He sees him as a bust. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with the Mets beating the Phillies. We talked about colonoscopies and endoscopies as well. Sal tells a story of meeting Mike Piazza at a restaurant and meeting Mick Foley while working as a cashier at Home Depot. In the final segment of the hour, we take calls about the Mets, Yankees and endoscopies.  Hour 3 The 8am hour begins with a call about Yankee Pitcher Scott Effross. We then got into Aaron Boone as Manager. A caller called him a ‘second place manager' and Jerry and Sal debate it. C-Lo returns for an update but first we talk about Rage Against The Machine at MSG and Sal is mad he had no idea they were even playing there. The Yankees were shut out in Boston last night. We debate whether A-Rod is a phony. Fernando Tatis Jr gets an 80 game ban. We heard from Rob Saleh on the Zach Wilson injury. In the final segment of the hour, we take some calls on the Mets. Hour 4 The 9am hour starts with Sal saying there is no chance he's watching the NBA on Christmas or the NFL on Christmas Eve & Christmas. Jerry doesn't know what to believe when it comes to NBA reporters and Kyrie. C-Lo returns for his last update of the day but first we talk about celebratory cork. We moved on to the Mets who beat the Phillies again. Buck Showalter wonders how Broadway works. The Yankees were shutout in Boston last night in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Fans in Jacksonville chant nasty things at Deshaun Watson. In the final segment of the hour we talk about Al's diet and finish up with a call on the Yankees.

What a strange couple days, huh? As the Trade Deadline crept to a close, the Yankees made some notable moves. The Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino, and Scott Effross additions were met with near-universal praise, and getting a minor pitching prospect in exchange for Joey Gallo wasn't too shabby either. However, the decision to flip steady starter Jordan Montgomery for injured outfielder Harrison Bader was met with some understandably raised eyebrows, given the current makeup of the Yankees' rotation. Andrew and Kunj chatted about both the moves (particularly the Monty/Bader swap) and the Yankees' annoyingly mediocre brand of baseball since the start of July that continued over the past week. They just barely took three of four at home from the selling Royals before dropping a series at Yankee Stadium to the Wild Card-contending Mariners. Gerrit Cole looked bad, Andrew Benintendi continued his post-acquisition slump, Clay Holmes blew another ugly save, and the vibes have just been off, more closely resembling the 2021 team at times. Thankfully, this Yankees team still has a double-digit division lead, so that's not really in jeopardy, but the play will have to improve sooner rather than later. Again, from a personnel standpoint, the ballclub is better than it was at the All-Star break. The onus is on them to step it up with a grueling road trip ahead through St. Louis, Seattle, and Boston. As always, the show wraps up with Kunj's B-Ref leaderboard check-in and the Yankee & Manfred of the Week, which didn't require too much critical thinking on the part of either host. It's the MLB trade deadline! Let's go! The Washington Nationals actually traded Juan Soto! I cannot believe it! The San Diego Padres will send most of their top prospects in what could be the biggest deal ever. (22:50) What happened with Eric Hosmer? He would not waive his no-trade clause. Instead of being sent to the Nationals, he was dealt to the Red Sox. (32:55) The Yankees made some big moves at the trade deadline. Frankie Montas from the A's, Lou Trivino from the A's, Scott Effross from the Cubs, Andrew Benintendi and Harrison Bader. Maybe the biggest move was moving Joey Gallo to the Dodgers. (37:55) Why do some teams hold onto players when they can be traded? What is the positive? Is it worth it? (46:00) What did the Mets do? Mets fans are so angry. Why? (47:30) Are the Angels awake? And if they are awake, what are they doing? Ohtani is still an Angel. Mike Trout is still an Angel. But they traded away Iglesias, Syndergaard, and Marsh… What!? Yankees GM Brian Cashman had quite a busy Monday. In the span of just a few hours, he dealt five prospects for three MLB pitchers: starter Frankie Montas and relievers Lou Trivino and Scott Effross. It's a lot to take in, but you can't say that the Yankees have refused to improve this already-talented team. Join this Twitter Spaces recording from before Monday night's game, when Josh Diemert, Peter Brody, Jake Devin, and Jeff Middleton (plus a few audience guests) discussed the deadline moves and the Yankees as a whole! The MLB trade deadline is just over 24-hours away, but the Cubs are already making moves. After trading reliever Chris Martin, Scott Effross was the next domino to fall. Effross has been traded to the New York Yankees for RHP Hayden Wesneski, a AAA pitcher and top-10 Yankee prospect coming off a strong July. Effross has been the Cubs best reliever this season. He's been dominant, unique and a great story for a team that continues to churn out bullpen depth. With five more years of club control, this appears to be a sell-high move from Jed Hoyer. Meanwhile, NL Central rival Milwaukee has sent four-time all-star and three-time NL Reliever of the Year Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres. The first-place Brewers got a big return for a closer that is on a hall-of-fame trajectory, but the move is turning heads. Luke Stuckmeyer, Cody Delmendo and Ryan Herrera talk about the big moves and prepare you for the inevitable ones to come in the next 24 hours. The trade deadline is tomorrow and so far it has been pretty uneventful on the trade market, until now! We have multiple trades break during today's episode and we're reacting live to the news, including the Brewers shockingly moving Josh Hader to the Padres. Jared talks about how he almost broke the Luis Castillo trade until Passan swiped it from him. Juan Soto has yet to be dealt so we're power ranking the bets fits for him among the Cardinals, Dodgers, and Padres. Aaron Judge now has 42 home runs and we're talking about if AL MVP is back up for debate. Dallas still thinks it's ridiculous to consider anyone but Shohei. The Yankees trade for Scott Effross and the Padres extend Joe Musgrove during the show so we're reacting live to those transactions as well. The Angels announced they are keeping Shohei Ohtani despite serious offers coming in from other teams. JRod is on the IL which may open the door for Mr. Peña to creep his way back. into the Rookie of the Year race. Joey closes the show by welcoming back Jacob DeGrom. Enjoy! Miguel Cabrera hit his 506th career homer in the sixth inning and moved past Al Simmons for 13th on the career RBI list with 1,840. Manaea was pummeled for a career-worst nine runs in 3 1/3 innings, and his replacement, promising young left-hander MacKenzie Gore, was pulled with an apparent arm injury. Gore, ranked among the game’s top pitching prospects before debuting this season, got four outs despite an average fastball velocity 2 mph slower than normal. Cubs 3, Pirates 2 – Nico Hoerner’s double sends streaking Cubs past Pirates 3-2 Nico Hoerner hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 for their fifth straight win. Hoerner finished with two hits and two RBIs. Rafael Ortega homered for Chicago, and Adrian Sampson pitched seven innings of two-run ball. Seiya Suzuki set up Hoerner’s clutch hit when he reached on rookie shortstop Oneil Cruz’s throwing error. Suzuki advanced on Ian Happ’s groundout and then hustled home on Hoerner’s drive into the gap in right-center. Mychal Givens worked the eighth for the win, and Scott Effross got three outs for his first save. The union announced its decision about eight hours before Monday’s midnight EDT deadline for an agreement that was set in the March 10 lockout settlement. MLB – Senators give Manfred until Friday to respond on minors A group of U.S. senators has given baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred until Friday to respond to questions about the sport’s antitrust exemption and minor leaguers. The senators had made the request to Manfred on July 18, and MLB asked for the additional time. Richard Durbin and Charles Grassley are among the four senators who asked Manfred a series of questions that could be a prelude to proposed legislation further limiting an exemption created by a 1922 Supreme Court decision. NFL – NFL enters media streaming marketplace with ‘NFL+’ service The NFL is making its move into offering its own media streaming platform. The league announced that “NFL+” launched on Monday. Owners were briefed about it during the league meetings in May while Brian Rolapp, the NFL’s chief media and business officer, confirmed in a column for “Sports Illustrated” last week that it would be starting this season. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a phone interview with The AP that the direct-to-consumer offering gives the league the ability to understand what fans and non-fans are seeking in terms of content and customize it for them. NFL – Chicago mayor presents 3 options for improving Soldier Field Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has presented three options for renovating Soldier Field, the home of the Chicago Bears, but the team said it’s not interested. Lightfoot on Monday proposed fully enclosing the stadium by rebuilding both end zones with columns that can support a dome; rebuilding both end zones with columns to make the stadium dome-ready; or modifying Soldier Field to be a multi-purpose stadium better suited for soccer. The mayor’s office estimated the costs of the three options would range from $900 million to $2.2 billion. It didn’t say how it would pay for any of the options. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Las Vegas Aces at Chicago Sky, 8:30 p.m. NHL – Detroit Red Wings extend affiliation deal with Grand Rapids The 20 year partnership between the Detroit Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins will continue for another five years.  Detroit has extended their affiliation deal with Grand Rapids until at-least the 2026-27 season.   Grand Rapids has been the Red Wings primary affiliate since the 2002-03 season.  the Red Wings say that the close proximity of their minor league team in Grand Rapids as the most convenient NHL/AHL partnerships as Van Andel Arena and Little Caesars Arena are only 157 miles apart.  Detroit’s secondary affiliate is located in Toledo, Ohio.   The Red Wings affiliation has resulted in two Calder Cup Championships for the Griffins in 2013 and 2017.  The Red Wings oversee hockey operations in Grand Rapids, including providing the GM, coaching staff, players, equipment state, and athletic trainers. NBA – Sudden arena idea angers, unnerves Philadelphia’s Chinatown Organizers and members of Philadelphia’s Chinatown say they were surprised by the 76ers’ announcement that they hope to build a $1.3 billion arena just a block from the community’s gateway arch. They say no one reached out for community input before the announcement. Now, they fear that they’ll be merely a stepping stone for people visiting the arena and that real estate values will price out older and immigrant residents. Chinatowns throughout the U.S. have been under threat from gentrification or development over the years. A spokesperson for the arena development company says that the process is in its infancy and that they planned to work with the community. NASCAR – JGR accepts penalties given to Hamlin, Busch, apologizes Joe Gibbs Racing has declined to appeal the penalties levied by NASCAR that stripped Denny Hamlin of his Pocono Raceway victory and cost Kyle Busch his runner-up finish. The win was awarded to Chase Elliott. Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota and Busch’s No. 18 Toyota both flunked postrace inspection Sunday night when NASCAR found issues in both cars that affected the aerodynamics. Joe Gibbs Racing apologized in a statement and said changes were underway to make sure it did not happen again. Hamlin was stripped of his third Cup Series win of the season and a track-record seventh at Pocono. Soccer – US women’s team has new vibe, work to do before World Cup The U.S. women’s national soccer team has a new look with young talent, and coach Vlatko Andonovski has tweaked its traditional straightforward and speedy attack to take a more nuanced approach. The players say something more is going on as well. They say there’s been a shift in the team’s vibe due in large part to a new mix of veterans and younger players.
