In this week’s episode of The Breakout Growth Podcast Sean Ellis and Ethan Garr chat with Brendan Candon, Co-Founder and CEO of SidelineSwap, an online marketplace for sporting goods. “Recommerce” is becoming increasingly popular. Reusing, reselling, and recycling used items creates value for buyers and sellers, and the process of trading in and trading up can actually be kind of fun. Brendan and his team have leaned into this by making it easy for athletes, parents, and coaches to find new homes for gear that might otherwise languish in their closets or end up in landfills. Recently Brendan and his co-founders raised money through DSG Ventures (Dick’s Sporting Goods’ venture fund), and we learn how this strategic partnership has unlocked a unique growth channel. By bringing used gear to Sideline Swap Trade-in events, held at Dick’s Sporting Goods stores across the US, consumers can get paid instantly with gift cards, which they can then use to buy new gear in the store. Not only does this build inventory for the online marketplace, but it also introduces new audiences to the platform. It’s this kind of thinking that has helped SidelineSwap compete and grow in a world dominated by large incumbents like Craigslist and eBay. Brendan tells the story from the very beginning when the idea was born after he bought used lacrosse gear from a friend. He describes the constant work to learn and grow, and the grind and discipline it has taken to build the business into a top-100 marketplace according to Andreessen Horowitz. So jump into this week’s episode of The Breakout Growth Podcast and learn about the amazing growth journey of SidelineSwap. We discussed: * The SidelineSwap backstory: from personal pain point to top-100 marketplace (08:00) * Focusing on one sport first to win the hard side (11:38) * Trade-in events, a unique channel to power growth (27:03) * New opportunities and a win-win with DSG Ventures’ investment (35:04) *Re-commerce and the power of “being where the customers are” (45:53) And much, much, more . . .

The Resale Edit: WeeklyEdition #3-This past week we saw the launch of three new brand resale platforms: Michael Kors, Marimekko, and PrettyLittleThing (PLT). Dicks Sporting Good expanded a local trade-in program, Amazon invested in Cashify, an Indian electronics trade-in marketplace, Trove reached 700 U.S. stores with trade-in technology and The Cut gave us a not-so-nice peak inside The Real Real.Michael Kors and Marimekko launched resale programs with beautiful splash pages, gorgeous photography, and activated with paid media budgets. The sites are powered by Recurate and Archive respectively. They follow the pattern that will likely define resale in 2022– low resource lift and high media exposure. As more brands offer resale, it will further accelerate the shift of branded resale from innovation to expectation. As Sourcing Journal writes these programs provide brands a low-lift way to launch resale by putting the work of listing, pricing and sell thru on the customer. Over the longer term these programs will require additional investment to go from marketing to business relevant. For example, as of August 30, Michael Kors had 74 items for sale, Marimekko 1,203: when shopping across 13 categories and half a dozen sizes on Marimekko it quickly becomes hard to shop.Trove shared a milestone of their Recommerce Operating System powering trade-in technology for 700 stores nationwide. Physical retail trade-in provides a tremendous advantage for brands making it easier for customers to bring back items, driving foot traffic, and cementing loyalty. This approach is a good example of the technology necessary to scale profitable resale for brands.Dicks Sporting Goods expanded local trade-in events with partner SidelineSwap. It's a no-brainer as stores fight to become community hubs. And, Amazon's 2% stake in Cashify, an Indian electronics trade-in marketplace is another early signal of the importance of electronics supply globally. I anticipate more shakers and change-makers to come over the next decade. Finally, The Cut exposed a “very real” look into The Real Real. The piece did its best to add a small dose of sugar with ‘but I can't stop shopping' however that is where the sugar high ends. The viewpoint is fairly accurate but in the broader context, early marketplaces such as The Real Real have been the innovators that have made resale of today mainstream. These marketplaces will face additional pressure as brands launch resale programs with lower customer acquisition costs, existing supply chains and store base. The So What?Resale is quickly becoming a customer expectation rather than innovation as more brands launch resale programs. Many brands are finding low lift ways to launch programs in the media. While these programs are a good start, they will require additional investment and technology to become meaningful to the business and customers.—----------------------------Week of August 30: Michael Kors Pre-Loved, a New Resale Marketplace, Launched FridayWomen's Wear Daily Looking to support the circular economy, Michael Kors launches a resale marketplace on PreLoved.MichaelKors.com. Everyone has heard the news that Mike Sowers is heading to Duke. The biggest name to enter the transfer portal beyond Sowers is Yale's Jackson Morrill. Kyle Gallagher (Fogo, Penn), Mike Adler (Goalie, St. Josephs) and Jack Rapine (Defense, Hopkins) are all in the portal as well amongst a bunch of other very recognizable names, many out of the Ivy. *SidelineSwap* https://sidelineswap.com/?utm_source=laxfactor&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=laxfactor2020 *Support the channel, buy some swag...* https://www.laxfactor.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

It's not official, but it's kind of official, Michael Sowers has reportedly chosen Duke as his landing spot to play lacrosse in 2021 and it makes a lot of sense. Sowers as I've said over and over is the best player in college lacrosse right now and Duke is now instantly a legit contender again. Michael Sowers is that good and now every time Duke takes the lacrosse field, they will do so knowing they have the best player on the field no matter who the foe. Other big news, Johns Hopkins has hired Cornell Head Coach Peter Milliman to be the new boss of the Jays. Milliman went 28-10 in his 2.3 seasons as the head guy at Cornell, and this is now the second coach in a row that Hopkins has stolen from Cornell, as Petro was at Cornell when he was hired by Hopkins way back in the mid 90's. *SidelineSwap* https://sidelineswap.com/?utm_source=laxfactor&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=laxfactor2020 *Support the channel, buy some swag...* https://www.laxfactor.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

North Carolina hit the road to face Denver and despite a 15-13 win that appeared close on paper, UNC had control of this game from start to finish and was never really threatened by Denver. Ethan Walker put up 5 goals for Denver and Justin Anderson went off for UNC tallying 5 goals and 2 assists. Virginia beat up on Air Force and Duke trashed Furman, so the ACC teams that played Sunday all handled their business as did Syracuse on Saturday. Yale's goaltending killed them on the day and in the end is the big reason for this loss. UMass held Yale's known quantities down as well playing a great defensive game. Penn State needed help from almost everyone on their roster to squeak past Penn. Ament was quiet with just 2 goals and 2 helpers, and Mac O'Keefe played hero and netted the game winner in OT. Hopkins got owned by Michael Sowers and Princeton. Sowers put up 2 goals and 7 assists by the end of the first half, and the Tigers rolled the Jays from there. Maryland finally put a full four quarters together and the end result was a fairly lopsided victory over a very solid Notre Dame lacrosse team. *Visit our sponsor, SidelineSwap* https://sidelineswap.com/?utm_source=laxfactor&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=laxfactor2020 *Support the channel, buy some swag...* ttps://www.laxfactor.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

In this weeks 86th LaxFactor Lacrosse Podcast College Lacrosse Recaps Show, we are going to rip through Yale's loss to UMass, Penn State's OT win over rival Penn, Princeton's handling of Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame's loss to Maryland. *Visit our sponsor, SidelineSwap* https://sidelineswap.com/?utm_source=laxfactor&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=laxfactor2020 *Support the channel, buy some swag...* https://www.laxfactor.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

Hobart as expected came into the dome and gave Syracuse some trouble, but Syracuse used the 4th quarter to separate themselves from their longtime rival enroute to a 21-13 Orange win. Tucker Dordevic had his 2020 breakout game going for 5 goals with 2 helpers. Linemates Brendan Curry (5g, 1a) and Jamie Trimboli (2g, 2a) made sure the entire nation knows that this Cuse first midfield line is tops in the country as the trio put up 12 of Syracuse's 21 goals on the day. The Orange attack re-emerged as a threat with Chase Scanlan putting up 4 goals and an assist and Stephen Rehfuss contributed a goal and 2 assists in the big win. Eric Holden was very good for Hobart with 3 goals and 2 helpers on the day and Jason Knox went for 1 goal and 2 assists. Syracuse did a good job limiting Hobart's other known quantities holding Ryan Archer to just a goal and a dish. *Visit our sponsor, SidelineSwap* https://sidelineswap.com/?utm_source=laxfactor&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=laxfactor2020 *Support the channel, buy some swag...* https://www.laxfactor.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

#20 Richmond gave #13 Duke all they could handle in Durham, but Duke was able to pull out a thrilling overtime victory over the pesky Spiders by a final score of 16-15. JT Giles-Harris was formidable on defense causing 4 turnovers while picking up 6 ground balls. On offense it was the Dyson Williams show with the freshman going for 7 goals off just 9 shots. JP Basile (1g, 4a) and Owen Caputo (3g, 1a) filled out the box score for Duke in the win. For Richmond, Tyler Shoults put up 3 goals and 3 helpers and Adrian Nash contributed a hatrick in the Richmond loss. Jack Rusbuldt's 11 saves were key in Richmond forcing overtime. He was outstanding over the first 20 minutes of the game, got a bit shaky around the middle, but finished strong. Duke's goaltending on the otherhand was a horror show. *Visit our sponsor, SidelineSwap* https://sidelineswap.com/?utm_source=laxfactor&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=laxfactor2020 *Support the channel, buy some swag...* https://www.laxfactor.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

Hobart vs Syracuse promises to be a better game than most would assume. Villanova has played one of the toughest early schedules in the country and I don't think Delaware is ready for Nova. We'll also dive into Notre Dame vs Maryland, Johns Hopkins vs Princeton, Penn State vs Penn, Yale vs UMass, Cornell vs Ohio State, Air Force vs Virginia, North Carolina vs Denver and Harvard vs Albany. In this 83rd LaxFactor Lacrosse Podcast, we recap a bunch of college lacrosse games from this past weekend including Princeton vs Virginia, Yale vs Penn State, North Carolina vs Johns Hopkins and more. Michael Sowers totally smoked Virginia in Princeton's big win over the Cav's. I was surprised that Princeton pulled out the win, but not at all surprised that Mike Sowers went for 4 goals and 4 assists in the win. I actually picked Yale by 2 in my initial line before our group went with Penn State by 1.5. Penn State shot the ball poorly all game long. If Kneese didn't play as well as he did, Yale wins this game by 4 or 5. North Carolina's Chris Gray put on a shooting clinic vs Johns Hopkins in UNC's route of the Jays. Carolina's offensive supporting cast is deep, so watch out for North Carolina as the season goes on. We'll also talk about High Point vs Cornell, Ohio State vs Bucknell, Loyola's one-goal win over Rutgers and much more. *Visit our sponsor, SidelineSwap* https://sidelineswap.com/?utm_source=laxfactor&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=laxfactor2020 Support the channel, buy some swag... https://www.laxfactor.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

It was a great game at the Carrier Dome with #7 Army taking on #5 Syracuse and we saw Cuse pull out the tough 9-7 win thanks to a 5-goal effort from senior midfielder Jamie Trimboli. Drake Porter factored heavily in cage for Syracuse with 18 saves, and Jakob Phaup dominated the face-off dot winning 16 of 19 in the big win. Brendan Curry scored 2 goals and 2 assists on the day, and Tucker Dordevic and David Lipka each tallied a score. Trimboli is also credited with scoring the eventual game winner on his 5th goal of the game.
