In this episode, we interview former Tufts lacrosse/hockey player and current Syracuse lacrosse player, Mason Kohn.We discuss his unconventional hockey career, where he began as a 10 year old, which is typically a later start to hockey. He progressed slowly in the early years, always being one of the under developed players. That is until he reached junior hockey where he quickly rose through the ranks, eventually getting drafted to the USHL. Despite his quickly advancing hockey career, he ended up at Tufts University where he struggled to find self confidence after committing D3. He overcame his ego and found purpose in playing for the guy next to him. Simmons Jr. Head Men's Lacrosse Coach at Syracuse on Monday, June 7, 2021.Gait became the fifth head coach for the 107th year of Syracuse men's lacrosse, replacing Hall of Fame head coach John Desko, who announced his retirement on that same day. He took the job after a 14-year stint as the head coach of the Orange's women's lacrosse program.Gait's remarkable playing career features a winning theme at every level. A three-time NCAA Champion, Gait led Syracuse's most dominant stretch in program history, losing just one game in three seasons from 1988-90. He is a two-time recipient of the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award, presented annually to the nation's most outstanding player, and was the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player on a team considered to be the greatest ever assembled in college lacrosse.At the professional level as a player, Gait has won three NLL titles (1991, 1994, 1995), three MLL titles, (2001, 2002, 2005), three Mann Cups (1991, 1997, 1999), the Heritage Cup (2004) and the ILF World Championship (2006).In his career, Gait is a 10-time NCAA Champion, including seven titles as an assistant coach with the Maryland women's lacrosse program (1995-01) and his three championships as a player. Joe, Matt, and Brett preview a Syracuse lacrosse team loaded with talent. What are the expectations for the program in year two of the Gary Gait era and how will freshman Joey Spallina fill the role of #22? Plus, it was a rough week for Syracuse basketball, but Judah Mintz and Malik Brown both looked good as the team continues to progress. The guys review the week that was and preview two winnable road games vs. Boston College and Florida State. And Brett rants against a confectioner for a second time.

College lacrosse teams are finalizing and releasing their 2023 schedules and I couldn't be more excited about how Syracuse's 2023 schedule looks and sets this young team up to have a little bit of success. Syracuse's schedule last season was a disaster in terms of flow. They opened with an easy one against Holy Cross before playing #1 Maryland, #2 Virginia and #13 Army West Point. A terrible way to start the season. This year, they start with 3 winnable games against Vermont, Albany and Holy Cross before playing Maryland, North Carolina, Duke and Hopkins. Then they get 3 more winnable games against Hofstra, St. Bonaventure and Hobart before finishing the regular season with another gauntlet with Notre Dame, Princeton, Caroina (again), Virginia and Duke (again). Still a tough schedule, but they do a better job of breaking it up into segments that will allow for the team to improve and get some flow before going into the more brutal games. Cornell's schedule is similar to Syracuse in the sense that they play a series of very winnable games leading into the meat of their schedule. The Big Red open with Albany, Lehigh and Hobart prior to playing Ohio State, Penn State, Yale and Penn. Then the have Dartmouth, Harvard and Marquette before finishing their season in a brutal fashion with Army, Brown and Princeton. But like Syracuse, Cornell is putting their guys in a position where they have a chance to do some team building and get some momentum heading into the toughest stretches. Penn's schedule? I'm not a big fan. Last year it worked out for them overall, but they open with Georgetown and Duke which continues a tradition of playing a couple of killers to start their season out. It used to be Maryland and then Duke, usually followed up by in-state rival Penn State. Last season, and again this season, it's Georgetown, Duke and then Penn State before playing Saint Josephs and Villanova. So in reality, Penn has no "gimme" games before they get into their Ivy schedule with Princeton, Cornell, Yale, Brown and Harvard all coming back to back to back. Only bright spot is they get to close with Dartmouth and Albany, two teams Penn should beat. And I close this episode with Denver. I see them finishing up about the same as last year. Denver's issue is that their non-conference schedule is so weak, they have no choice but to pick up a win against one of the 4 or 5 killers they play. The Pio's non-conference slate includes killers like Duke, Carolina, Yale, Ohio State and Georgetown. If they want any shot at making the tournament, they'll have to beat at least 2 or 3 of those teams while also making sure to NOT drop any of the other non-conference games against teams like Utah, Air Force and Towson. If the Pio's lose even a single game that they "shouldn't", it will make it very tough to make the NCAA tournament without winning the Big East tournament. I see no at large team coming out of the Big East. Hobart as expected came into the dome and gave Syracuse some trouble, but Syracuse used the 4th quarter to separate themselves from their longtime rival enroute to a 21-13 Orange win. Tucker Dordevic had his 2020 breakout game going for 5 goals with 2 helpers. Linemates Brendan Curry (5g, 1a) and Jamie Trimboli (2g, 2a) made sure the entire nation knows that this Cuse first midfield line is tops in the country as the trio put up 12 of Syracuse's 21 goals on the day. The Orange attack re-emerged as a threat with Chase Scanlan putting up 4 goals and an assist and Stephen Rehfuss contributed a goal and 2 assists in the big win. I was in the house for the Syracuse/Vermont/Hofstra scrimmage on Sunday and we have some highlights and commentary on how it went. Today on the show we have Steven Brooks. Steve is a graduate of Syracuse University where he won two National Championships. One as a freshman, and another to round out his career as a senior. His senior year he was also a First-Team All American and the McLaughlin Award winner for the nations top midfielder. Steve was drafted 6th overall by the Chicago Machine. He's an MLL All-Star who now plays for the Florida Launch where he's a team co-captain. Steve and I were roommates during my time at Syracuse so it was really great catching up with him. As a senior, he worked his way to winning the award for the nation's top attackman, the same year Lyle Thompson won the Tewaaraton as an attackman in Albany.He shares his thoughts on the MLL compared to the NCAA in terms of pace, coaching, and how fun it is for spectators by comparing his experience as a player in both systems. On a personal level, while in the MLL, he also suffered a major injury for the first time as a player and describes how he worked his way back from it.Kevin also has just completed law school and discusses why he chose a more traditional career path instead of going fully into lacrosse right away.
