Steve Howe, motivational speaker and Safety Director at Emil Anderson Group, joins The Safety Guru this week to share his powerful story with us. He suffered a serious injury at work in 2006 when an excavator bucket struck him through his abdomen. Steve shares insights surrounding motivations behind shortcuts, the crucial influence that supervisors possess in truly promoting a safe culture, and practical ways for safety leaders to make safety simple. Drawing from his personal journey and rich experiences, Steve makes safety concepts relatable and easy to understand through emphasizing that safety should remain everyone's responsibility. Tune in to learn, be inspired, and make safety simple with Steve Howe. About the Guest: With over 18 years in the construction industry, Steve Howe understands the daily hazards faced by workers and why safety is often viewed as an impedance. In the spring of 2006, while working as a young tree faller on the Sea to Sky Highway project in British Columbia, Steve suffered an unimaginable injury. Despite the feeling that something wasn't right that morning, Steve pushed forward – as many would – to get the job done. Unfortunately for Steve, this decision - to ignore his gut - resulted in being struck by an excavator bucket through his abdomen and being dragged for several feet. It was the beginning of a drastically altered life. Living through 83 surgeries, 90 Days in a Coma and over 500 days in a hospital allowed Steve the opportunity to reflect on his accident and he developed a passion to share his story with others. His message of survival, emphasizing the importance of working safety not just for yourself but others around you, has been heard all around the world. This week in airplane news: The NTSB has issued a surprisingly short final report for the redbull plane swap, the prelim report is out for the CASA Skydiving accident, airplane parts fall from the sky, and another highway landing. The NTSB has issued a remarkably short analysis and probable cause of the Redbull plane crash Probable Cause: “The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The unoccupied airplanes exceedance of the critical angle of attack which resulted in a stall, subsequent inverted spin, and impact with terrain.” WPR22LA165 https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search The NTSB Prelim report has come out for the strange occurrence of the co-pilot falling out of the plane The report states the copilot may have gotten sick, was visible upset, and lowered the rear ramp of the aircraft The PIC then stated the SIC removed his headset, apologized, and departed the aircraft via the aft ramp door - without a parachute. ERA22LA348 https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search According to the department of public safety in Maine, a 6-7lb metal sleeve-like object landed near a Capitol Police Officer. No one was injured and multiple people saw it happen The FAA believes the part came from a wing flap of a large passenger jet. Nearby aircraft were notified and all landed safely. https://abcnews.go.com/Weird/wireStory/airplane-part-falls-sky-hits-man-maine-88415457 Another highway landing has occurred and luckily all 5 people involved were uninjured. A Piper PA-32 landed on Route 91 in California, striking a Toyota pickup truck. The two people in the plane were able to get out prior to a post-crash fire and there were no injuries in the pickup truck. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/yet-another-highway-landing-this-time-alls-well-that-ends-well

In today's episode, Mark Therriault is joined by Ben Jang — Nicola Wealth's Portfolio Manager who manages their infrastructure and renewable resources partnership. Today, Mark and Ben are diving deep into the topic of infrastructure and renewable resources. They discuss what infrastructure is, what the infrastructure space actually looks like, how infrastructure works, the risks associated with investing in infrastructure as an asset class, how it fits into a portfolio, and what Nicola Wealth looks for in infrastructure or renewable resource projects as a solid investment. On top of that, Ben also gives some really good examples of infrastructure products in Canada today and how he sees infrastructure as an asset class developing in the future.    Key Takeaways: [:29] About today's episode. [:56] What exactly is infrastructure as an investment vehicle or an asset class? [3:02] In terms of investing in infrastructure, is this something that has been around long-term as an asset class? Or is this new? [3:56] Some of the struggles that occur with underinvesting in infrastructure projects. [4:49] From the government's perspective, what's the benefit of them doing a private infrastructure project? [6:15] What companies are investing in infrastructure projects? [6:55] When did the Sea-to-Sky Highway become a private infrastructure project? And how do they get compensated for managing it? [9:50] Are there lots of varying ranges in terms of risk for infrastructure as an asset class? [11:11] Other than roads or hospitals, what other types of assets would be considered infrastructure investment products? [12:33] Where does infrastructure as an asset class fit in a portfolio? And can you expect cash flow from this asset? What are the terms from an investor standpoint? [13:48] Can infrastructure assets go up and down in value? [15:18] Ben explains the infrastructure assets Nicola Wealth looks at (which fall into three categories: regulated, contracted, and GDP-related.) [17:16] Of the three asset infrastructure categories, does contractual have the highest potential of return?  [19:22] Are there a lot of deals in infrastructure as an asset class? [20:26] Does Ben think that infrastructure as an asset class will grow significantly, going forward? [21:21] Are all contracts in infrastructure considered long-term contracts? [22:16] Does Ben think that infrastructure as an asset class will grow beyond what it is right now?   Mentioned in this Episode: Infrastructure Canada Brookfield Sea-to-Sky Highway   Guest Bio Ben Jang Ben joined Nicola Wealth in September 2012 with extensive experience working for several multi-billion dollar investment management firms focusing on global equity, GTAA and market neutral funds.
