Mindful speech is a form of spiritual practice. The teachings on how we speak to each other are there to open a sense of enquiry. In other words, working out what's helpful and what's unhelpful, what causes agitation, stress and suffering, and what alleviates it.

On Wednesday, February 22nd, the Alliance will be joined by more than 119 partners who are all working together to help raise awareness of valve disease—what it is, who's at risk, what the symptoms are, how it's detected, and how it's treated. This year, we're proudly expanding internationally with the help of Heart Valve Voice Canada. There are an estimated 11 million Americans with heart valve disease and more than 1 million Canadians—so this topic is of great importance to both of our organizations. Heart Valve Voice has a number of exciting events and outreach activities planned for Heart Month and Valve Disease Day, and their managing director, Ellen Ross, is here to tell us more about their work.

Today, I interview Melahni Ake who was born in Florida, but shortly afterwards her family moved to their hometown of Indianapolis where her grandparents had established a thriving church ministry. When her father suffered a sudden illness the family went back to Florida for his treatment, but he died quickly and they then returned to Indiana. Through all of these moves, Melahni had to learn to adapt quickly. She attended so many different schools and had so many new beginnings, she found ways to be resilient and communicate with people in lots of different situations. Melahni points out to us that during this time as a young child, she could have felt fear and dwelled on everything she was lacking. There were a lot of unknowns for her. But she says that despite not having siblings to lean on, and after losing her father, she somehow still felt an inner need to push through. She kept learning and felt driven to find ways to be of service and continue to develop herself. Her family had done big things in this world, and she knew she had a big purpose for her own life. So she chose joy. She joined a hockey league as the only girl, and stayed on for 12 years. Her confidence grew as she learned how to communicate with people who weren't like her. She uses the amazing analogy that she learned to look at life like a hockey puck, visualizing where it's going to be instead of focusing on where it is now. Another experience she relates to us is the sheer panic she felt over being eliminated at her job at age 50. She had a meltdown, as I'm sure many people would, and ended up in the hospital. Her anxiety almost killed her, and she no longer had a plan for her life. But she has realized since then that we have to harness our purpose and create a strategy for it – a complete mindset and way of operating. Now as a coach, Melahni thinks back to those magical years during her early childhood, using similar joyful inspiration to guide others toward their own paths filled with light and fulfillment. __________________ Melahni Ake is the founder of Everyday Leaders Professional Coaching and Consulting from Indianapolis, IN which provides leadership development resources and strategies to corporations, non-profits, and community programs to create sustainable systems for consistent growth. Today, I'm speaking from the heart! This episode is a bit hodgepodge, but I wanted to take some time to talk to you about things that have been on my mind. I've learned so much from my own business, and I want to share those realizations and lessons with you to help you on your own journey. Making changes to our business and life can be scary. There's no doubt about it. But feeling empowered to do so is so important, and realizing when the time is right to do so is also vital. I also want you to understand that no matter what anyone says, the idea that there's only one way to conduct business is just plain wrong. Here's exactly what we chat about in the episode: My Permission Slip to You How to Decipher if a Change is Right For You Changing Your Beliefs There's More than One Way to Do Business I hope that this episode opens your eyes to what you're completely entitled to as a person and business owner. I also hope that it assists you in building your business and structuring your offer in the way that works best for you. And finally, as always, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay #PrettyAwkward! Inspired to open up the "classic" tool of the 5 love languages to be more inclusive, Anne wrote SPEAKING FROM THE HEART: 18 LANGUAGES FOR MODERN LOVE, illustrated to show what those languages may look like and what they don't. We talk about: Opening up to how we see relationships, especially platonic ones; giving and receiving love more easily and openly; asking yourself if you're holding back; shifting back to communal participation; going beyond the basic 5 languages; Anne's faves (this week); score keeping; being in a relationship with yourself; connecting; the awkwardness or re-establishing contact/socializing; managing expectations; getting back to normal and needing to grieve what was lost; the missing love language; practicing the dance; consent; checking in; telepathy; why assume when you can just ask?You can find Anne on Twitter and Instagram @theannehodder, on Facebook @EveryoneDeservesSecksEd, and her book is available at https://www.themodernlovelanguages.com/Episode recorded on 04/16/21Episode released on 05/26/21For more information on the podcast or its host, please visit sassylittlepodcast.com. This is another behind the scenes episode of The OutSpoken Girlfriend podcast. I am speaking the language of the heart on today's episode. And the language of the heart is not always concise and straight forward- but it is always real. On today's episode I am talking about the ups and downs & twists and turns that come with life. Yes, there have been some disappointments. Yes, I have had some painful moments this past week (physically and emotionally). And yes, I have been given the opportunity to turn inward- and tap into my inner wisdom. Not all pain can be fixed with a pill or a few kind words. Some pain is placed on us so we can experience the power of healing… …the type of healing that only comes when we slow down and listen to our hearts.
