2011 film by Tom Hanks
POPULARITY
Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts bring the star power, but is that enough to make Larry Crowne memorable? In this episode of Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head back to 2011 for a charming-but-lightweight romantic dramedy written and directed by Hanks himself. It plays like cinematic comfort food—pleasant while you're watching, but not much to chew on afterward.Mike Butler and Mike Field talk about the film's easygoing vibe, Hanks' likable lead performance, and the strange sense that nothing ever really happens. Is that the point? Or is Larry Crowne just too laid-back for its own good? Plus, shoutout to a surprisingly stacked supporting cast—including Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, and Bryan Cranston. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema. What's your favorite Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts film? Let us know in the comments below!

This episode's guest is actor, writer, voiceover artist, and unapologetic improv nerd, Roxana Ortega.Roxana is one of those rare artists whose vulnerability, honesty, and humor hit you all at once – and leave a lasting impression. If her voice sounds familiar, it might be because she's voiced everything from the passionate Frida Casagrande on The Casagrandes to characters in Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and Monsters at Work. She's narrated Pulitzer Prize-winning novels, voiced countless animated characters, and is a master of voice matching (yes, she's dubbed for Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek). In our conversation, Roxana takes us through the unexpected path that led her to acting – from growing up in an academic household where creativity wasn't considered a “real” career, to having a life-changing epiphany while teaching English in Spain. We talk about the internal battle between playing it safe and going after what you truly want—and what it really means to decide to be an artist. We go deep into the power of improv as both a performance tool and a life philosophy, how failure can be a gift, and why community-building and representation matter now more than ever. Roxana shares how she uses her voice – literally and figuratively – to make space for underrepresented stories, and how she's continued to evolve as a writer, performer, and director.Whether you're someone who thrives on stage or someone working up the courage to take the leap, Roxana's journey will remind you that embracing risk, staying curious, and being fiercely yourself is always worth it.Episode Chapters 00:00 – Welcome + Introduction02:00 – Names, Language, and Laughter04:00 – Academic Roots & Artistic Restlessness07:55 – The Epiphany in Spain13:49 – “I Decided to Be an Actor”16:00 – Improv, Joy, and Redefining Failure21:45 – Performing, Directing, and Creating Her Own Work32:00 – Representation, Identity, and Making Space40:00 – The Tapestry of Humanity49:30 – Amazing Race Nerd Out50:50 – Blissful Spinster & Making Art on Your Own Terms54:35 – Final Words of Wisdom55:14 – What's Next for Roxana58:00 – Wrap-Up & Thank YouRoxana's Bio:Roxana Ortega is an American actor, writer, and voiceover artist who is known for voicing the ever-emotional Frida Casagrande on Nickelodeon's Emmy award-winning and Imagen award-winning cartoon The Casagrandes, a spinoff of the acclaimed series The Loud House.On-camera, she recently starred opposite Danny Trejo, Reno Wilson, and a cast of legends including Garrett Morris, Barry Bostwick, and James Hong in the Universal feature Grand-Daddy Day Care. Other film credits include The Flight Before Christmas opposite Mayim Bialik, Miss Congeniality 2 opposite Sandra Bullock, and Larry Crowne opposite Tom Hanks. Her TV guest-star credits include New Girl, Shonda Rhimes' For The People, The League, Rules of Engagement, NCIS, and the Peabody award-winning satire American Vandal.Behind the mic, she has voiced countless characters in TV, films, trailers, commercials, and some of the biggest video game franchises around, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Final Fantasy, Halo, and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. A two-time AudioFile Earphones Award winner, she has narrated the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, the National Book Award finalist Sabrina & Corina, and the New York Times's non-fiction best seller Random Family to name just a few. In addition, her mimicking skills have led her to voice-match the likes of Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek, and Jennifer Tilly.Born in Los Angeles and raised in Fullerton, CA, Roxana is of mixed Peruvian and Mexican descent. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, then spent a year teaching English in Madrid, Spain. It was there, while she was elaborately acting out English vocabulary to her students, that she realized she wanted to pursue a career in acting. She returned to the Bay Area and immersed herself in theatre and improvisation, then made her way to Los Angeles where she continued her improv and acting training and began writing and performing sketch comedy.Roxana is an alumna of the CBS Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase, Upright Citizen's Brigade, and the Groundlings Sunday Company. She has written and produced her own shorts and performed storytelling all over Los Angeles, including at The Moth GrandSLAM.She is also the creator and co-host of the live storytelling show Minority Retorts, which spotlights stories from the under-represented, and The Risking Space, a podcast about art and risk. HAPPY TOM HANKSGIVING!!! Giving a Tom Hanks movie on Thanksgiving is a great deed! I encourage you all to complete this symbolic gesture ( you don't actually have to give up a movie to someone if you don't want to.) But it's a really fun way to celebrate by giving Tom Hanks and taking a photo to go with it. Generally, a guest of honor is selected and an announcement and symbolic giving commence. One host is schooled by the charms of Tom Hanks butt shots. The other was already well educated in the greatness in LARRY CROWNE but if you missed it in 2011 OR even if you didn't and are pining for that definitive commentary track... here's a podcast on the Julia Roberts and Pam Grier buddy comedy. The few (and I do mean few) ideas we have for improvement on Mr. Hanks second time in the director's chair: Speaking of Ms. Grier why is there not a buddy comedy pairing with Judy Greer as THE BEST BEST FRIENDS? If you find yourself in a romantic pairing with Bryan Cranston's porn addiction does that make Tom Hanks ass more palatable? Further butt shots are needed. And is Rami Malek's performance in this more Oscar worthy than BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY? Likely. Such is the greatness that is LARRY CROWNE that we will never have all of our questions (or concerns) answered but we keep rewatching it just for you the listener! John brings Niki and LB to the bargaining table in an attempt to learn what, if anything, can be done to get them to watch the 2011 romantic comedy Larry Crowne starring Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks. The Thinktank also discusses related topics, including the contents of Muscle Milk, the contents of the Holy Bible, that era of straight porn when everything was a parody of something, the difference between sardines and anchovies, whether John could ride a bike, and against our better judgement, even more. Vardalos went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing (Original Screenplay), a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. The film inspired the CBS series MY BIG FAT GREEK LIFE and led to a 2016 sequel MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2, which she also wrote and starred in and featured the original film’s cast. Vardalos’ other notable films: CONNIE AND CARLA, which she also wrote and starred in, opposite Toni Collette and David Duchovny; made her directorial debut with the film I HATE VALENTINE’S DAY; MY LIFE IN RUINS with Richard Dreyfuss (the first American production given permission to film at the Acropolis); and co-wrote with Academy Award winner Tom Hanks the film LARRY CROWNE. She continues to write screenplays, but regularly returns to television. Her first appearances as an actress were on numerous hit television series like THE DREW CAREY SHOW, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, BOY MEETS WORLD and TWO GUYS, A GIRL AND A PIZZA PLACE. Other notable television appearances have been on DROP DEAD DIVA, COUGAR TOWN, GREY’S ANATOMY, LAW & ORDER: SVU, JANE THE VIRGIN, THE CATCH, GRAVES, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND and most recently the TV movies SAME TIME, NEXT CHRISTMAS, POISONED LOVE: THE STACEY CASTOR STORY and CHRISTMAS ROMANCE AL DENTE. From 2015 to 2017, Vardalos and Ian Gomez co-presented the first two seasons of ABC TV’s THE GREAT AMERICAN BAKING SHOW. She made her Broadway debut in THE 24 HOUR PLAYS 2006 as Mary in Julia Cho’s THE FIRST TREE IN ANTARCTICA, directed by Andrew McCarthy, followed by the 2009 The Actors Fund's CHANCE & CHEMISTRY, a centennial celebration of Frank Loesser. A chance meeting with Tony Award & Emmy Award winning director Thomas Kail (HAMILTON, IN THE HEIGHTS, FX’s FOSSE/VERDON) led to her adapting for the NY stage Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 book TINY BEAUTY THINGS, where she originated the role of Sugar. The play had 2 acclaimed runs at The Public Theater in 2016 and 2017 and had a limited run at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2019. On May 6, 2020 Vardalos and the entire original cast of the play did a live-stream reading of the play as a benefit for The Actors Fund. After thirteen distinct in vitro fertilization attempts had failed, Vardalos’ struggle to become a mother ultimately led her and then husband Ian Gomez to adopt. She went on to tell her journey in her New York Times best-selling book INSTANT MOM, which was published in 2014.Also on Episode 17, Wendi brings up cryotherapy, hot flashes, and the weekly RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT mentions Comedy Central's Emmy Award winning series DRUNK HISTORY, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Broadway's HAMILTON and Wim Hof's deep breathing method. We recorded this week’s podcast on a Thursday afternoon rather than the typical Friday, so there’s a slightly different energy! But we think that’s a good thing. Join hosts merritt k and Danielle Riendeau on a whirlwind discussion of the bizarre things that characters eat in the Mario games, the best real-life drinks, and a fabulous feature this week on the Shin Megami Tensei series. We’re also looking to enact revenge on John and Niki for making us watch Larry Crowne and Artemis Fowl over the last week… Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tom Hanks pulls quadruple duty on #HANX for the Memories, as he's the writer, director, producer, and leading man in Larry Crowne. Joining us to talk about the "explosion of benign, muted joy" of Larry Crowne is Michael Domanico (Not Her Again), a past guest of the TomTom Club and an expert in all things Julia Roberts. In this episode, we talk about Hanks's second effort from behind the camera, the strange reality that this movie seems to inhabit, as well as the absolute and total lack of any real problems in this movie, which is almost exclusively inhabited by kind people. Also, stay tuned to find out what little moment in this movie may be Joey's favorite thing in any movie ever.
This week, for John’s Birthday (happy birthday!), he subjected Danielle, Niki and merritt to Larry Crowne, a wildly indulgent comedy both directed by and starring Tom Hanks, from a script written by Hanks and Nia Vadarlos. Featuring some of the doofiest comedy hijinks you can possibly imagine this side of 1998, Julia Roberts in her most unlikeable role, and every other Hollywood A-to-C-lister you can imagine, it’s a… fascinating movie. We will review the facts, pass judgement, and let you know the verdict. Consider me starstruck, because this week, I'm joined by one of the stars of the movie we're talking about, Nicole Villela (@itchybrained). That's right, Nicole played one of the college students in Larry Crowne (2011), and she dishes on some real Tom Hanks stories. In this film, Tom attempts to do it all again as writer, director, and star. Of course, it's not as great as That Thing You Do!, but we have a good time watching Tom be Tom. Let me know what you think @youvegothanks. — SHOW INFORMATIONInstagram: Instagram Twitter: Twitter Subscribe: Apple Podcasts Subscribe: Spotify

THanks Tom Hanks. Vi høres på åen! Forresten...
