Today on Art of the Cut we speak with Sam Restivo and Oscar-winning editor, Claire Simpson about their editing of Ridley Scott's Gladiator II. Claire and Sam have been on Art of the Cut previously for their work on Ridley's Napoleon. Claire won an ACE Eddie, a BAFTA and an Oscar for her editing of Best Picture winner, Platoon. She was nominated for another Oscar and an ACE Eddie and won a BAFTA for her editing of The Constant Gardener. Along with Platoon, she's edited two other Oscar Best Picture nominees: The Reader and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. In addition to Napoleon and Gladiator II, Sam was an additional editor on The Last Showman, The Last Duel, House of Gucci and Robin Hood. The discussion today is about - among other things - re-organizing the film to find the best moment to reveal critical information, the difference between editing action and dialogue scenes, and the importance of experimentation. AND THE WINNER IS...a let down? We have had so much fun this season with some really great films. Films that we called perfect, modern classics, innovative, surprising; and it all led to one of the most predictable Best Picture Winners. Surprising to no one, this was not on the top of any of our rankings at the end of this season, but we can't say we didn't like it. Colin Firth gives a moving performance because he can do no wrong. Geoffrey Rush was a charming supporting actor that matched Firth toe to toe, and Tom Hooper wasn't as annoying as he could be. Είναι αυτά τα, τα μελτέμια που είχαμε πει με τη Μαριλένα πριν κάποια επεισόδια. (Ναι) Μας έχουνε βρει εδώ πέρα. Πριν μπούμε στο θέμα μας, Ιωάννα, θέλω να παίξω ένα μήνυμα που μας έστειλε ένας ακροατής (Μ, τέλεια!). Ευχαριστούμε πολύ. Τι ωραία! Χαιρόμαστε πάρα πολύ όταν μας στέλνετε μηνύματα. Είναι ο... Πώς προφέρεται το όνομά σου; Ρούμπεν; Κάτσε, για να παίξουμε το μήνυμα που μας έστειλε. Ρούμπεν: [2:00] Γεια σας Easy Greek. Με λένε Ρούμπεν και είμαι 18 χρονών, από την Αγγλία. Από παιδική μου ηλικία μέχρι και σήμερα μου αρέσει πάρα πολύ η Ελλάδα. Πηγαίνω σχεδόν κάθε χρόνο για διακοπές με την οικογένεια μου. Σαν κανονικούς τεμπέληδες Άγγλους, δεν μιλούσα καν μία λέξη ελληνικών. [2:29] Εκτός από το «ευχαριστώ» και ίσως το «καλημέρα», πάντα με άσχημη αγγλική προφορά. Αλλά φέτος εξαιτίας της καραντίνας είχα πολύ ελεύθερο χρόνο και -μάθαινα ήδη τα γαλλικά, οπότε μου αρέσει η εκμάθηση ξένων γλωσσών- αποφάσισα «γιατί όχι, θα ξεκινήσω να μαθαίνω και τα ελληνικά». Ξεκίνησα σιγά-σιγά. Είναι όμορφη γλώσσα αλλά στην αρχή μου φάνηκε πάρα πολύ δύσκολη, ιδιαίτερα η γραμματική με το αιτιατική, το γενική κ.τ.λ., αλλά ήθελα πάρα πολύ να πάω στην Ελλάδα και να επικοινωνήσω με άνθρωπους. Ήθελα να αποδείξουμε στις Ελληνίδες ότι «πιάνω πουλιά στον αέρα» και όποτε έψαξα λίγο στο internet και ευτυχώς βρήκα το Easy Greek. [3:28] Έβλεπα όλα τα βίντεό σας και έχω ακούσει όλα και τα επεισόδια του podcast, μερικές φορές κάθε επεισόδιο. Να ακούεις και απορροφάς τις λέξεις και τη μουσική της γλώσσας είναι πραγματικά, ο πιο αποτελεσματικός τρόπος να μάθεις μια ξένη γλώσσα, έτσι πιστεύω, ιδιαίτερα όταν ακούεις κάτι που σου τραβάει το ενδιαφέρον, που σου αρέσει. Οπότε το Easy Greek είναι κυριολεκτικά υπέροχο γιατί πάντα, παιδιά, μιλάτε για ενδιαφέροντα πράγματα και επίσης αγαπάω τις προφορές σας, αν και εγώ έχω ακόμα αγγλική προφορά, δυστυχώς.
