Arrivederci! Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von fritz-kola. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Alto saxophonist Erena Terakubo, from Sapporo, Japan, began her recording career early, releasing her first album when she was only 15 years old. Inspired by a saxophone-playing M&M doll, Erena developed an interest in music that led her to become a notable figure in contemporary jazz. Her journey inclu0des playing in big bands in Sapporo and preferring jazz over classical music. In this episode, Erena Terakubo exuberantly shares her early influences, including J Fusion and musicians like Charlie Parker and David Sanborn. She shares insights into her life in the United States, cultural adjustments, and the challenges she encounters in New York City's jazz scene. With guidance from fellow alto sax player Vincent Herring, Erena navigated the business side of jazz. Erena talks about overcoming initial nervousness, gaining confidence, and arranging music for big band performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center. She highlights the significance of emotional expression in music and how her influences have shaped her improvisational style. Additionally, Erena discusses her experiences as a woman in the predominantly male jazz industry, her ongoing project, and her future goals. This episode delves in her story and explores various aspects of jazz. Erena acquired the nickname, North Bird. Find out at the end of this episode how she earned it. The discography for this 32-year-old saxophonist is impressive. Erena now has six recordings as a leader: Absolutely Live (King Records, 2019), Little Girl Power (King Records, 2018), A Time for Love (Cellar Live/King International, 2016), Erena Terakubo with Legends: Burkina (Eighty-Eight's, 2013), Erena Terakubo with Legends: New York Attitude, (King Records, 2011), and North Bird (King Records, 2011). What is more impressive are the personnel for her first three projects. Listen to this conversation to learn about this. Thanks to King Records, we will listen to three tracks from Erena's latest recording, Erena Terakubo: Absolutely Live! The quartet includes Erena Terakubo-Alto Saxophone, soprano saxophone; Mayuko Katakura-piano, Rhodes; Motoi Kanamori-bass; Shinnosuke Takahashi-drums, percussion. All compositions written by Erena Terakubo. 1. Little Girl Power 8:26), 2. A Crystal Path (6:54), 3. Be Nice (4:47) Thank you for listening. Four sisters, one lonely boy. Sounds like Little Women, right? Ann Napolitano thought so, too, when she was about 100 pages into writing what would become her bestselling novel, Hello Beautiful. She realized the similarities and decided to mold the story into a modern-day retelling of the classic. Napolitano's version is set in Chicago and there are enough variations to make this book, Little Woman lover or not, an engaging and surprising read. Nancy, who was young when she discovered Little Women and loved everything about it and the entire series, as well as Linny, who watched a movie adaptation, both were riveted by Napolitano's brilliant storytelling that really helps us understand entirely new takes on these characters through their lifetimes. It's a poignant reminder of the ways children cope with both scars and expectations to find their true selves. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/frontporchbookclub/support

This week, we take on one of the greatest "she done me wrawng" songs of all time - "Bad Little Woman" by The Wheels. We analyze the religious slant of the song written by these Northern Ireland velocity boys - is the singer's woman dating the literal devil?? Wild screams, a sparking organ, a malevolent atmosphere - this must have went over gangbusters at Belfast's Maritime Hotel on a stormy night. The American version of the song was credited to Wheel-a-Ways, and it's a totally different take/bake. It has what the Japanese call kagerou - "heat haze", or what the Great British Baking Show call "rough & ready." Cultural references! We also discuss cool versions by The Shadows of Knight and The U-Men. Who'll win the coveted BDA? The Lord only knows ...

Former teen idol Bobby Sherman is 80 years old and still wowing them. He was born in Santa Monica, California and became interested in singing whilst at high school. Following his graduation, he was given the opportunity to sing for Sal Mineo's band at a party and eventually got a gig as house singer for the ABC show ‘Shindig!', which ran from 1964 to 1966. His luck changed drastically in 1968 when he was cast in the role of a stammering, bashful logger in the TV drama series ‘Here Come the Brides'. The series became a hit and established him as an actor. The following year Bobby released the song "Little Woman". The single charted #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually earned gold status. Bobby instantly became adored the world over and from the late 60s to the mid-70s, he toured extensively. A frequent guest on TV variety shows and featured in an episode of ‘The Partridge Family', he later had guest roles in several drama series including ‘Mod Squad,' ‘Murder She Wrote,' ‘Ellery Queen,' ‘Frasier,' ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,' 'Good Day LA,' ‘The Rosie O'Donnell Show,' ‘Entertainment Tonight,' and ‘Good Morning America,' to name a few. In 1981, Sherman starred in the musical comedy movie ‘Get Crazy'. Five years later, he joined the cast of the sitcom ‘Sanchez of Bel Air.' His versatility as an actor allowed him to seamlessly transition between comedic and dramatic roles, showcasing a depth beyond his teen idol persona. These television appearances further solidified his status as a well-rounded entertainer. After a 25-year absence, Bobby performed in "The Teen Idol Tour" in 1998 along with artists Davy Jones (The Monkees) and Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits). While his presence in the spotlight may have waned in recent years, his enduring appeal remains. Bobby Sherman scored so many hits during the late 60s and early 70s, including "Easy Come, Easy Go”, "Julie, Do Ya Love Me" and "La, La, La", all of which sold millions of copies and earned him gold discs. From 71 to 79, Bobby Sherman was married to his first wife. The couple had two sons, both of whom work in the entertainment industry today. In the 90s, Bobby joined the Los Angeles Police Department as a technical Reserve Police Officer. He was later promoted to Captain in the Department and began serving in San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in 1999, eventually retiring in 2010. It was during this time that Bobby met his new wife, Brigitte Poublon. Together, the couple founded the not-for-profit Brigitte & Bobby Sherman Children's Foundation. No surprise that Bobby Sherman - all round good guy and much loved entertainer has had several awards bestowed on him for his humanitarian efforts. Bobby Sherman joins us this week to share tales of his incredible journey. This week we are back to talk about the absolute banger of a Disney classic, Aladdin (1992); not to be confused with it's shitty, 2019 live-action counterpart. Other topics of discussion include Robin Williams' beef with Disney, whether or not Jafar is a cradle-robber, how lying sometimes IS the answer, and more! Next week we will be watching Mrs. Doubtfire!

It's time for another episode of "Single File" - where we study a notable single, 'reading' both the A and B sides. And the A side is one of the most UNHINGED songs we've ever spun, Adrian Lloyd's 1965 screamer, "Lorna" (1:07). Warning: CONTENTS ARE UNSAFE! Even the bass is buggy on this one - put your headphones on and say sayonara to your sanity ... Oh, and it has a surf drum solo, too! The B-side, "Got a Little Woman" (42:00) might seem like a respite, but it sneaks up on you like a gang of rabid raccoons in the night. This song also has a beautiful ostinato-overload guitar solo that you need to hear. These two sides will take you on a wild rollercoaster ride!!

He was a teen idol here in Milwaukee and around the world in the 60s and early 70s. In fact, the screaming of the young women in the audience caused him to lose some of his hearing. He was the star of “Shindig” and “Here Come the Brides” TV shows. Bobby received more fan mail than any other entertainer on ABC-TV. He had seven gold singles and five gold albums. His hit “Little Woman” became a million seller. He had many other hits including “Julie Do Ya Love Me,” and “Easy Come, Easy Go.” He was my guest on the “Bob Barry Calls the World” program several times. This time he added a lesson for young people on how to become successful…with a surprise ending!
