Today on Art of the Cut we speak with Sam Restivo and Oscar-winning editor, Claire Simpson about their editing of Ridley Scott's Gladiator II. Claire and Sam have been on Art of the Cut previously for their work on Ridley's Napoleon. Claire won an ACE Eddie, a BAFTA and an Oscar for her editing of Best Picture winner, Platoon. She was nominated for another Oscar and an ACE Eddie and won a BAFTA for her editing of The Constant Gardener. Along with Platoon, she's edited two other Oscar Best Picture nominees: The Reader and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. In addition to Napoleon and Gladiator II, Sam was an additional editor on The Last Showman, The Last Duel, House of Gucci and Robin Hood. The discussion today is about - among other things - re-organizing the film to find the best moment to reveal critical information, the difference between editing action and dialogue scenes, and the importance of experimentation. If anyone ever tries to tell you that your vote doesn't matter, you can tell them about this election. The final results of BC's vote took a week to calculate—and even then two ridings need judicial recounts. It was as close as an election can possibly be, and that means that the government it produces will be ... precarious, to say the least. So why was it so close? Where was the election ultimately decided? Will David Eby's NDP actually be able to form a government? If they do ... how long can it possibly last, and what could it actually get done?GUEST: Jen St. Denis, reporter, The Tyee We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. In May 2021 Hakai Magazine published a five-episode mini podcast called The Sound Aquatic. While our team has a break over the holidays, we're bringing you that series. Here's the final episode, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” By now, we know the ocean is anything but silent. Fish grunt, whales moan, reefs roar with the deafening sound of snapping shrimp, and even natural sounds like waves and rain can be heard throughout the ocean. But people have taken it to the next (decibel) level, with global shipping, oil and gas rigs and exploration, sonar, and fishing and recreational boats. Can we learn to be good neighbors and turn the noise down? On this final episode of The Sound Aquatic, we try to find out. Find show notes and a transcript at hakaimagazine.com/the-sound-aquatic.
AND THE WINNER IS...a let down? We have had so much fun this season with some really great films. Films that we called perfect, modern classics, innovative, surprising; and it all led to one of the most predictable Best Picture Winners. Surprising to no one, this was not on the top of any of our rankings at the end of this season, but we can't say we didn't like it. Colin Firth gives a moving performance because he can do no wrong. Geoffrey Rush was a charming supporting actor that matched Firth toe to toe, and Tom Hooper wasn't as annoying as he could be. If this had been 2012's Best Picture Winner, this conversation might have been completely different. Tell us your thoughts on the 2011 race over on Twitter and Instagram. We're taking a short break before we come back with our Conversations with Oscar series- where we dive into the current Oscar season and as always, give our thoughts! THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2011 retrospective has come to an end. Our final review is Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist," starring Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller, Malcolm McDowell, Missi Pyle, Beth Grant, Ed Lauter, Joel Murray, Ken Davitian & John Goodman. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and it went on one of the most unlikely award season runs we've ever seen. Suddenly, in 2011, everyone was charmed and transported back to the age of silent film and fell in love with this movie. Does it hold up 12 years later? Tune in as Nadia Dalimonte, Sara Clements, Alyssa Christian & Daniel Howat, and I discuss the film's story, performances, its faithful recreation of the silent film era, awards season run, and more in our review. Thank you for all your support throughout this entire retrospective, and enjoy! THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2011 retrospective is almost at an end. Our second to last review is Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" based on Brian Selznick's 2007 book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," starring Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ray Winstone, Emily Mortimer & Jude Law. The movie found unexpected ways to pay homage to cinema's past while incorporating 3D technology from cinema's present to give audiences a cinematic experience, unlike anything they had seen before from Scorsese until that point in his career. How does this family film aimed at children and adults hold up today? Take a trip to the moon with Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Daniel Howat, Will Mavity, and me as we discuss the film's story, themes, performances, crafts, awards season run, and more in our review. Our 2011 retrospective continues this summer with David Fincher's American remake of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen & Joely Richardson. Based on the based selling crime novel by Stieg Larsson, the book had already been made into a popular Swedish foreign language film in 2009. The film's dark tone, violent subject matter, and changes from the source material continue to be a point of contention. Our 2011 retrospective continues this summer with Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," starring George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Beau Bridges, Nick Krause, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard & Robert Forster. Serving as Payne's follow-up to his Oscar-winning "Sideways," it proved he was an Academy darling as the film received five Oscar nominations and won Best Adapted Screenplay, Payne's second. Did it deserve its accolades then, and how do we feel about it now? Instead of waiting for the end of the year to talk about our favorite books, my real life book club members Yasmin Dunn and Stephanie Newman-Smith and I decided we should have a mid-year meeting to discuss some of the great things we've read in this first half of 2023. We talk about the best novels, memoirs, personal growth, and general nonfiction books that stand out, and even share some of the personal things going on in our lives that have affected our reading habits lately. We also unintentionally talk a lot about Hollywood in this episode - where the three of us all live and work - discussing the writer's strike and multiple celebrity memoirs. JOIN SECRET STUFF NOW FOR BONUS CONTENT Of course, we talked for hours. And there was still more we had to say. Check out the Secret Stuff bonus episode for even more book talk, including the books that haven't worked for us this year. The surprise Best Picture nominee stunned everyone in 2011 when it overcame its poor reviews to make it into the final lineup, receiving two Oscar nominations overall. What do we think of it all these years later? Has it improved over the years, gotten worse, or remained the same? Tune in as Josh Parham, Isaiah Washington, Patreon supporter Connor Olen, and I discuss the performances, story, score, themes of this 9/11 drama, its awards season run, and more. Thank you for all your support, and enjoy! Also, be sure to check out our other 2011 retrospective reviews for "War Horse," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "Midnight In Paris," & "The Tree Of Life."
