I am joined by Srini Rao, a storyteller and host of the Unmistakable Creative podcast, where he has learned from the most creative people alive. He`s the bestselling author of multiple books on reclaiming your creativity, and that`s exactly what we`ll talk about today: How to pursue your own definition of success and make your childhood dreams come true in adulthood. Max Out Insights: You can only control your behaviour and your effort. Passion follows engagement. Diversity of ideas is a key aspect of providing unique content and not only “echoing” your surroundings. Anyone can learn and acquire new skills, but you have to balance with the probability of succeeding. You want the heart of an artist with the mind of a business owner. It's a lot easier to stay motivated by measuring the way you're progressing towards a goal by your behaviour and how far you've come and done. You need systems to make ideas happen. Creativity comes from creating. It comes down to: - “Is it meaningful for you?” Max Out Quotes: “Get clear on the reasons why you're doing something.” “Try before you commit.” “If you're not offending someone, you're doing something wrong.” “Focus on your behaviour more than the outcome.” “Even if you accomplish some big goal, you can never rest on your morals. If you stop doing the thing that got you where you're at, you're done.” “Learn how to filter for relevance and for relevance to you.” “There's no point to consuming all this knowledge and not doing anything with it.” Connect with Srinivas: You can find his work at https://unmistakablecreative.com/ and make sure to follow and connect with him on Instagram @unmistakableceo

Srinivas Rao (or “Srini” as he's often called) is the founder of Unmistakable Media, host of The Unmistakable Creative podcast and author of multiple books, including the Wall Street Journal bestseller The Art of Being Unmistakable. Srini's most recent book is Unmistakable: Why Only is Better Than Best. So when it comes to being not just recognizable, but undeniable, memorable and ultimately unmistakable...well, he literally wrote the book on it. In his podcast, Srini has conducted over 600 interviews (!) with thought leaders and people from all walks of life. This has cultivated an incredibly distinctive view on branding, storytelling, and marketing with so many great sources to draw from. Since so much of the creative process includes elements that are outside our control, Srini believes we have to fall in love with the process of what we do, and be less concerned with external feedback. While it's important for your business to track sales, and measure engagement, you have to decide, will you base your joy off of these numbers? One tip? Pick things that you'd choose to create even if you weren't getting paid, even if there was no way for people to “like” it or upvote it in some way.   “When you're no longer concerned with all of these things you can't control, that really is a place of freedom.”   When you let go of this need to manufacture some sort of result, when you can let go of those outcomes and focus on the process, all of the anxiety and energy that were put into outcomes are now translated into the process. Srini believes, the enemy of process is distraction. It's ally is a concept called Deep Work, introduced by Cal Newport, which is the ability to go into a cognitively demanding task for a long period of time. The more you do that, the more that you build what Srini calls Creative Momentum, the more you start to get into a state of Flow.   “If you can actually resist the temptation for distraction, you will build your ability to go into deeper states of Flow, and not only that but you will sustain the ability to go into deeper states of flow for longer periods of time, and as a result things will actually get better.”   Srini's book, Unmistakable: Why Only is Better Than Best, illustrates that anyone is capable of standing out from the crowd, being authentic, and avoiding the alluring trap of mimicking those that have come before them.   How do you avoid succumbing to the tempting mimicry epidemic? Curiosity – “What are you naturally curious about? Not what you think will lead to some sort of result or outcome, but what is it that you are curious about?” Experimentation – “Experiments don't have to be expensive, don't have to be time-consuming, but they give you a tremendous amount of feedback.”   “We're trying to boil down something that has no formula into a formula.”   Srini is a passionate surfer, and his experience with the ocean has shifted not only the way he shows up in business, but also the way he shows up in relationships. For example He's cultivated resilience in the face of difficult situations. He also practices letting go of any expectations from these situations.   “What you learn by being in the ocean is that the conditions are always changing. It's always dynamic, it's always interesting, and your job is to keep adjusting to what the conditions are. There are days where the conditions are perfect, but if you're just standing around waiting for the conditions to be perfect you'll never do anything, you'll never take any risks.”   Srini is a wonderful guest and, indeed, unmistakable guest. He shares a lot of great tools and tips to improve our productivity, break free of distractions and become unmistakable. I greatly appreciate him stopping by, and you should go check out The Unmistakable Creative to hear more from Srini.       SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: How does Srini cultivate more creativity in his life? What tips would Srini give people who are just starting out and haven't honed what makes them unmistakable yet? Where does Srini see the business going and what does the future of the Unmistakable brand looks like? Can Srini think of a habit or tool from his 600+ interviews that stands out that he has implemented in your own life? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How you can be Unmistakable. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable that you can implement right away. It'll make you more magnetic and effective. Today, we're joined by recent guest, Unmistakable Creative host, and author of Unmistakable: Why Only is Better Than Best, Srini Rao. He'll tell us how to write 1,000 words a day without even thinking about it. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: In order to effortlessly write 1,000 words a day, you need to make it second nature in your daily routine -- like brushing your teeth. Writing by hand vs. writing by keyboard. Activation energy: the fewer steps there are for you to do something, the more likely you are to actually do it. Have the tools of your routine on hand and ready to perform. To minimize distractions, Srini recommends loading up Focus at Will (a subscription music service that helps you focus -- with science!), and blocking all attention-grabbing websites (or your browser itself) for an hour. If you're writing on a laptop, have your word processing software set up so it's the first thing you see when you open it up in the morning. Before you know it, you'll write 1,000 words per day and you won't even think twice about it. Give it a try this week! This week's guest is someone truly UNMISTAKABLE. His name is Srini Rao and his company is the "Unmistakable Media" which ports the slogan of "The voice of disruption." Under this company Srini is known by many as the master mind and creator of "The Unmistakable Creative" podcast. At unmistakablecreative.com you'll find his 500 episode archive that's full of unbelievably insightful episodes. One of my personal favorites is "The Making of Macgyver with Lee Zlotof". Macgyver was my childhood hero and is why I became an engineer. I stumbled upon this podcast a few months ago and am now an Unmistakable Addict. I ABSOLUTELY love what Srini has created and invited him on the show because, in my opinion, he has a beautiful way at looking at life and he's an incredibly insightful person. In talking about disruptive technology, I think Srini is doing it in the way we look at our lives in almost every way. Srini is no Weenie. He's bold and shifting people's paradigms left and right. Srini is the bestselling author of a book entitled "The Art of Being Unmistakable: A Collection of Essays about Making a Dent in the Universe" (Nov. 2013). I just started reading this book and my mind is being blown. In fact, Glenn Beck interviewed Srini and said the following about his book, "It is the future, it is what's coming and it is the way out about just about every mess the world finds itself in." I want to publicly thank Srini for taking the time to be on my show today. I know he's a very busy man. More specifically, I wanted to thank him for the work he's done. He doesn't know this but I've been using his content to keep me afloat in pursuing my own dreams and aspirations. Some of my listeners know I've started a company this year, published my first book, and reengaged with this podcast. One of the fuels i've been using to do this creative work is Srini's podcast. It's for that reason I highly, highly recommend you download an episode today and try it out. We'd also like to thank our sponsor Tall Tales Engineering, LLC. Like so many in his generation, Srinivas "Srini" Rao graduated into a horrible job market. Except unlike many, he did it twice. The first time was after college. Rao graduated from UC Berkeley, finishing up school in 2000 just as the dot-com-fueled Bay Area economy was crumbling. The second time Rao graduated into a recession was after business school, which he graduated from in 2009. Not surprisingly, he suffered his way through a few years of working for various dot-com and startups that either failed or were acquired, leaving him out of a job. Rao's experiences led him to believe — quite understandably — that the corporate world would never be as secure and reliable as being an entrepreneur and finding a way to support himself based on his own skills and resources. Today, Rao is the founder of BlogcastFM, a podcast and site which started out focused on blogging, and branched out into focusing on other areas such as entrepreneurship, personal development, public speaking, surfing (Rao's personal passion) and writing. This side project quickly turned into a major source of business for Rao and it has allowed him to avoid working any of the dreaded “corporate jobs” he vowed to avoid. I've been listening to BlogcastFM since the early days (around 2010), and so when I saw Srini Rao was coming out with a new book (The Small Army Strategy), I thought it was a great opportunity to engage him in a longer discussion on the podcast.
