Building an Intelligence Engine

I'm excited to share this rambling and wide-ranging conversation with Srinivas Rao. Srini is the host of The Unmistakable Creative Podcast, and has recorded over a thousand episodes with such luminaries as Danielle Laporte, Tim Ferriss, Seth Godin, and me! Srini describes his podcast as “If TEDTalks met Oprah”. Srini has interviewed so many different types of folks, from bank robbers to billionaires. He also has a business degree from UC-Berkeley and an MBA from Pepperdine   University. We talk about podcast interviewing (meta, I know!) and we unpack a topic that's close to both of our hearts: creative output. One of my early podcast episodes was with Sara Holoubek, CEO of Innovation Systems consulting firm Luminary Labs. Sara introduced me to the idea of having what she called an “Intelligence Engine'' - a process by which organizations turn insights into action and action into opportunities, not just every so often, but consistently and regularly. It's not a dissimilar idea from Jim Collins' “Flywheel effect” in that, ideally, you tune up your engine often, and even upgrade it when you need to. One of my core beliefs is that conversations exist at different scales, and that they act in similar ways at these different scales. I also might take the idea of a conversation too far…in that I feel that any iterative, adaptive cycle is, in essence, a conversation. So, Sara's Intelligence Engine is essential for a healthy, growing company's conversation with the world - after all, intelligence at the product and/or organizational innovation level requires a consistent cycle of making or creating new things, testing or trying those things out and reflecting on how it went, ie, harvesting insights. That's an innovation conversation, at scale. That cycle is pretty much the same at the level of the individual. We all need to seek new input, make and try new things, and then reflect and inspect the results. Serendipity Engine vs Intelligence Engines vs Curiosity Engines As with organizational intelligence, individual intelligence engines need to have a balance of intention and wandering. We need to be actively seeking new insights and ideas that matter to us, while also being open and curious about the unexpected. So, having a curiosity engine, like my guest Glenn Fajardo suggested  in our episode on connecting remote teams, is a powerful way to rev up your intelligence engine, for yourself, your team and your organization. Managing the flow of input, insight, and output If there is one key takeaway from this episode, it's that the open/explore/close // diverge/emerge/converge ARC of our own intelligence conversation is input-insight-output.   Srinivas' top tips for building your own personal intelligence engine:   Limit your Input Diversify your input Read books, not articles (they've digested complexity already!) Use a networked tool to capture your smart notes (srivas recommends Mem.ai which I also use!) Reflect and Connect dots regularly Monotask to reduce the cognitive costs of task switching (check out my friends at Caveday and use the code 1STMONTHONE to get month of community-based monotasking support for $1 or use TRYACAVE21 to get your first cave free) Head over to theconversationfactory.com/listen for full episode transcripts, links, show notes, and more key quotes and ideas. This awareness leads to action and this action is now based on your courage and not your fear!”Keystone habit that Srini Rao believes in and which has helped him build out his creative career Writing 1000 words per day!! Philip McKernan Inspirational Speaker, Writer & Filmmaker I found out about Philip in a conversation with Srinivas Rao, the creator and genius mind behind The Unmistakable Creative Podcast. Philip has been a guest on his podcast several times and he and I will be a part of a completely unique conference Srinivas is putting together in Nashville, TN.  In speaking with Srini about the conference, he told me he was trying to decide between Philip and I as to who he wanted to have close down the conference because of how dynamic he feels we both are. Clearly, that made me want to meet this man. Philip works with entrepreneurs and business leaders all over the world. When people are seeking clarity about their future or want to move through roadblocks, seen and unseen, they call Philip. What separates Philip from a lot of coaches, speakers and gurus is originality. He brings new conversations to the table and spends an obscene amount of time thinking and challenging the status quo, instead of simply repackaging business & life hacking strategies. Podcast Notes: Philip gave me permission to go behind the curtain of his public persona to speak to the man who has lived the life that he lives Hear how who his parents were, influenced him to be who he is Hear what his biggest fear is He is committed to not letting people die with who they are still inside of them How do you determine what a person's gift truly is Chasing vs. allowing vs. nudging it a little bit Sometimes people would rather fail at who they are not than have the courage to succeed at who they are. Allowing who you are to manifest So many people are doing things they do not want to do, living in places they do not want to live and living in the expectation that something will bring you joy that isn't fair. If you are doing things that do not bring you joy for the money that supports your family, relook at your life and change your expectations to fit your situation Or change your situation to rise up to your expectation I am making an impact in the world and helping people but I am not happy because I do not like myself. The tradeoff is based on a story you are telling yourself that may or may not be true. What if those stories are not true and how would it feel to put those stories down and look at the world without that story. The Old Hag and The Socialite People are afraid to allow themselves to look at their relationships and see what they have but see how much more is possible. We see it the most on the other side of the conversation when a person is dying. What scares you the most? becoming too important in my world scares me 95% of the people who do what I do think they know all the answers How do you prevent yourself from having that happen Hear what Philip does The slippage is already happening. You must realize it. How he checks himself in that slippage There are people who do not step up to be themselves because they are worried about falling into this trap A conversation he had with his daughter I share my vulnerability to keep myself grounded Who can access us better, ourselves or someone else? What is coming up for him right now One Last Talk- what it is? Giving voice to the people that have no voice Resistance of what we have been given is as bad as gloating in it What is Humility? Accepting what is in front of us vs. resisting it. What do you want people to walk away from the experience of One Last Talk What is the meaning behind this concept What happens when we think this is the last talk we will ever give The last creates an urgency that is not there at other times What has most surprised Philip in the work he has done? The clarity they have even when they don't know they have it When they get out of their own way, it comes so clearly What is the pivot point? Wake up calls The elephant moment What would a wake up call being trying to tell you today? I spent my whole life hiding and my greatest work is still to come when I stop hiding. What makes you still hide The fear of rejection The book in our back pocket we are scared to write What would your book say? What is it you don't want to let people know that you know you have to let people know Not hiding anything but rather there is a part of me that asks is your greatest work still to come. The thing we feel that doesn't have value is the most valuable part of us What that place is in Philip I am still hiding the pain and anguish I have had in life. And when Philip goes deeper into this, hear what emerges An experience of something that happened that I have never shared with anyone before? The story of what happened in the safest place he ever was in The experience of everything disappearing and what emerges that changes the life of the person he was with An incredibly vulnerable story How the book in your back pocket holds the secret to our greatness. The ultimate connection The governor we put on our own success. The one thing I believe I can influence in the world.     Ways to get in touch with Philip: www.philipmckernan.com https://onelasttalk.com   Ways to get in touch with Danny: www.TheMosaicOnline.com www.DanielBruceLevin.com   please subscribe to The Mosaic Podcast on Apple and give us a 5* rating.   And fnally, please buy the Mosaic on Amazon: http://a.co/dvgsgG3

We have spent the last several weeks exploring how to design memorable moments for our customers and communities, our audiences and even our families. But how do we design a life of wonder for ourselves? How do we juggle our own creative calling with the needs of our clients and communities? Is there a way to approach marketing as a craft, making it part of our path to mastery? How do we realize our best creative selves, pursuing mastery and meaning in every aspect of our lives? Today, Jeffrey explores the creative process with Srinivas Rao, the founder and host of The Unmistakable Creative Podcast and author of the recently released Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake, and Marty Neumeier, Director of CEO Branding at Liquid Agency and author of several books, including the forthcoming business thriller SCRAMBLE: How Agile Strategy Can Build Epic Brands in Record Time. Srinivas and Marty explain how they make decisions about which projects to take on, discussing the tension between what they have been called to create and market demands. They address the significance of ongoing reflection and self-awareness in carving a path of personal and professional mastery and offer insight around putting your imprint or signature on any project you take on, learning best practices—and then challenging them. Srinivas and Marty also describe how they measure the value of their own work, seeking self-mastery rather than obsessing over marketing metrics. Jeffrey asks them how they work through doubt in the writing process, what surprised them in the creation of their latest works, and how they foster openness in creative collaboration. It’s a neat little paradox we live in as artists, isn’t it? Our job is to stay focused on creating solely from our vision, and yet, we can’t help it . . . sometimes we have to look up to see if anyone else is paying attention. Srini Rao, the host and founder of The Unmistakable Creative Podcast, has a lot of great wisdom on this topic as someone who has interviewed over 700 highly creative people and who just published his latest book, “Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake.” Srini talks about finding validation in your work, surfing as a creative practice, dating as a self-proclaimed B-List Celebrity and answers the question, “Which should take precedence: morning sex or your writing habit?”Click here to learn more about the Performers & Creators Lab >>About Your Host, Holly ShawHolly Shaw, CHT is a performance coach, creativity researcher and stand up comedian. Growing up in Indianapolis, IN she convinced her parents she needed to go to Chicago to get her own agent when she was 14 years old and has spent a lifetime in film, T.V. and on professional stages all over the world as an actor, dancer, and director. Now she shares her passion for the problems that artists face as a Creativity Coach and a Certified Hypnotherapist and has helped hundreds of artists, from Emmy award winning and Grammy nominated artists to world class choreographers overcome their anxiety, stage fright, impostor syndrome, and creative blocks so that they can create original work and totally kill it onstage again and again without feeling like they're selling out or losing their sanity. In 2016, Shaw wrote and released her book, The Creative Formula: Compose, Choreograph, and Capture Your Masterpiece which has become an Amazon bestseller.
