They delve into the dynamics of cancel culture in high school environments, the evolution of crisis in the media landscape, and the role of social media influencers. Evan shares insights from his research and firsthand experience in crisis PR, highlighting the dangers of cancel culture and the importance of understanding the nuances of each situation. The Business of Meetings – Episode 164 - The Cancel Culture Curse with Evan Nierman Today we have the great pleasure of speaking with Evan Nierman, the Founder, and CEO of Red Banyan, a well-known specialist crisis management, and PR firm! Evan has recently published an important book called The Cancel Culture Curse: From Rage to Redemption in a World Gone Mad. He joins us today to tell his story and talk about his book. Bio: Evan Nierman is the Founder and CEO of Red Banyan, an international crisis management, and public relations firm. He and his team have provided counsel to thousands of clients across the world, including scores who have been the targets of cancel culture attacks. Evan's writings on issues related to communications and marketing are featured in a range of leading outlets. He speaks at various conferences and universities around the world and is often called upon by the media to provide insight and analysis. Evan's Journey Evan grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. He enjoyed growing up there but could not wait to leave Louisiana, so he went to George Washington University in Washington DC. In DC, he got to do an internship while being a student. One of the organizations where he interned became his first job. He left the organization seven-and-a-half years later to work in high-stakes crisis PR for a small firm that did interesting work for some high-profile clients. He was unhappy there because he did not like the firm's values and decided that one day he would have a firm like that one and do things differently. Before becoming an entrepreneur, Evan spent a year-and-a-half working in-house at a startup, which moved him to South Florida. Working for the startup, he learned about interacting with investors, raising money, and the challenges of exponential growth. He then left to start an enterprise of his own. He set out to build what he was looking for and create the culture he would like to have had when looking for a job. He wanted to do work that would empower people and improve the lives of his clients. Now, almost twelve years in at Red Banyan, he feels he is right where he should be and is happy with the work they're doing! Social media Evan tries to be active on social media to let people know what is going on with Red Banyan. Crisis Averted In his book Crisis Averted, Evan spoke about pressing the truth. That means you must put your message out there and advocate for yourself. Because if you fail to do so, someone else will! Red Banyan is expanding Evan is pressing the truth about the expansion Red Banyan is going through right now. They currently have people in locations across the United States and 30 full-time team members, coast-to-coast. They are also getting an increasing number of clients from across the world. The Cancel Culture Curse Evan is patriotic and believes that America is the land of opportunity. Writing The Cancel Culture Curse was the labor of his love for democracy and America. He thinks America is off-track and believes we can and must do better. He and his co-author, Mark Sachs, wrote The Cancel Culture Curse to define cancel culture, help people better understand what it is and the devastating impact it has on people's lives, and help small business owners prepare their organizations for dealing with potential cancel culture attacks or how to avoid them entirely. The elements of cancel culture Evan identified six key elements to cancel culture. He based the elements he identified on previous research by sociologists and academics and also added some of his own. (Most of the earlier research focused on political witch hunts.) The six key elements of cancel culture The perceived crime the targeted person committed against the collective It arises very quickly. The nature of the offense is usually minor, or it gets fabricated. There is a disproportionate response. Everyone is afraid to defend the accused. The moral absolutism of those doing the condemning. How to survive cancel culture The first thing you must do is refuse to get canceled. Then, don't apologize unless you are clear about what you are apologizing for and to whom you are apologizing. (Because in a cancel culture world, no mistakes are allowed. So you will not be forgiven, and your apology will become the rope on which they hang you.) The media The mainstream media is essential for making cancel culture all-powerful because it jumps onto manufactured scandals, amplifies them, and helps spread them. Teaching our children Children should be taught the difference between journalism and sensationalism. They must learn to review online content critically and be encouraged to develop critical thinking skills. Why it is so difficult to cancel politicians Most people assume the worst about politicians and believe political leaders are unlikeable, self-interested, corrupt liars who will do anything to hold onto their power and advance their careers. So when they say stupid, objectionable, or distasteful things, people tend to accept them. Additionally, politicians refuse to be canceled. Evan's deepest wish for the future Evan hopes that his book, The Cancel Culture Curse, will contribute to moving America back to when people could disagree politically, remain friends, and be happy to be surrounded by others with different beliefs. Guest: Evan Nierman, the Founder and CEO of Red Banyan, an international crisis management and public relations firm. Evan is also the co-author of The Cancel Culture Curse: From Rage to Redemption in a World Gone Mad. Overview: Crisis management isn't a question of If. It's a question of When. CEOs who haven't anticipated what could get in the way are especially vulnerable to one customer service slip-up, one tone deaf memo that leaks, one disgruntled ex-employee, or one resurfaced social media post that hasn't aged well. And in a world where cancel culture is running wild, forgiveness from key stakeholders can be hard to come by. On today's show, Evan Nierman explains why every CEO needs to have a crisis management plan at the ready so that your next emergency is just a blip on the way to BIG.

Rick Sanchez and show producer Scotty Mednick dissect the recent scandal involving Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez who was secretly recorded making tasteless comments about a colleague and his African American son. While they both agree that the comments were rude and showed bad form, they were not racist and Martinez should not have been forced to resign. Sanchez asks why no Latino leader came to her aid and why he's the only one defending her. Crisis management expert Evan Nierman joins the conversation and explains that the current trend of cancel culture sweeping the country is dangerous, un-American, and destroying people's lives. Nierman contends that we cannot allow internet mobs to become the judges, jurors, and executioners of what is right and wrong. RSN_S1_E0050 Learn more about your ad choices. It's said that once something is on the internet, it's there forever. Given the rise of the digital age and how intertwined the internet is in our teens' lives, it's not a surprise that they post things constantly—the key is that they're not always aware of the consequences, short- and long-term, of certain comments, posted videos or shared photos on their reputations and futures. Evan Nierman makes his living in PR management and crisis resolution for clients around the world; today he's joining Mighty Parenting podcast host Sandy Fowler to discuss how teens can fall into social media pit traps, what the legal consequences might be for seemingly innocuous actions, and how we as parents can pull our teens up before they go too far and get into serious trouble. Today we are happy to speak to Evan Nierman, the CEO, and Founder of Red Banyan! Evan is the guy behind the curtain who helps people in any type of crisis! He is an amazing individual with tons of experience in communication, crisis, and public relations. He is the author of the bestselling book, Crisis Averted: PR Strategies to Protect Your Reputation and the Bottom Line. In this episode, Evan tells his story. He explains why he started his company, Red Banyan, and the challenge he had to face after starting it. He talks about his book and shares the lessons he learned along the way to becoming a successful entrepreneur. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Evan Nierman today! Bio: Evan Nierman is the Founder and CEO of Red Banyan, an international crisis management, and public relations firm. Evan and his team have provided counsel to a diverse group of celebrity, political, corporate, and private clients, helping them navigate high-stakes situations to achieve the optimal outcome. He is also the author of the best-selling new book Crisis Averted: PR Strategies to Protect Your Reputation and the Bottom Line. Evan's story Evan was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. He studied communications at George Washington University in D.C. After graduating, he spent the next seven years-and-a-half years working in communications between the U.S. and Israel. After that, he worked at a high-stakes and crisis communications firm in D.C. for eighteen months and then moved to South Florida to work for a startup as their Spokesperson and Communications Director. After doing that for a year and a half, he decided to start a business and founded Red Banyan. Evan's event Immediately after graduating, Evan left to attend an event he had been planning for several months. Senator Bob Dole was the speaker, and the event took place just after he had lost the run for president. The AIPAC Conference The biggest event Evan has ever assisted in planning was the AIPAC Conference in Washington D.C., with 20,000 people attending. Until Covid, that event happened every year for 20 years in a row, and Evan was there for every event without missing a single year. Planning those events was always a mammoth undertaking, and it involved an enormous amount of logistics. People are not always how they appear on TV In the twenty years he spent in D.C., Evan noticed that sometimes the people who seem the nicest on TV turn out to be the worst, and those with the worst reputations are the nicest. Leaving his first job Evan decided to leave his first job because he was afraid of being pigeon-holed or becoming a one-trick pony. He needed to see what else was out there and wanted to test himself. Moving to Florida When Evan moved to Florida, his wife was nine months pregnant with their second child, and they knew almost no one. He advises anyone with an opportunity to move to Florida not to do it with a heavily pregnant wife or in the middle of summer. Leaving the startup Evan decided to leave the startup because he knew it would soon blow up in a bad way. He got well educated at the startup and learned a lot about venture funding, but he wanted to get out and do his own thing before things went wrong. Starting Red Banyan out of desperation He started Red Banyan out of desperation because he knew that the company he was working for would not make it. In both the jobs he did after leaving AIPAC, he ended up not enjoying the culture of the organizations or the way they did business. So he gave himself one year to see if he could make Red Banyan work. Why did Evan start the kind of business he did? Evan started his business because it involved doing what he knew. He is a communicator, and he did not know anything else. The challenge The challenge he faced when starting his business was that he was good at doing the work, but he did not understand how to be an entrepreneur. Building an enterprise Evan's involvement with EO and getting coaching and mentorship from other entrepreneurs made all the difference. In time, he got the education he needed, so he transitioned from thinking of the business as a consultancy to building an enterprise and an organization that could operate with him at the helm but did not need him for the day-to-day. Looking back Looking back, he finds it hard to believe that he was willing to make that leap. But he knows he is doing what he needs to do, and he learned many valuable lessons along the way. Trust the process Evan believes that if you have the right mindset and mentality, all your experiences in life will lead you on a journey. So you have to trust that whatever you are doing is right for you. Learning from your mistakes You learn more from your mistakes than you do from your wins. Lessons learned Evan learned from his experience as an entrepreneur that getting paid something was better than earning nothing. He also discovered that you can't afford to have too much revenue tied up in one client. Evan's book Evan wrote the book Crisis Averted: PR Strategies to Protect Your Reputation and the Bottom Line, and he also read it on Audible. PR and crisis In his book, Evan explains that PR and crisis are not only for the big dog. They are for everyone. That has never been more important than right now because we live in a dangerous time. So a good person trying to do the right thing is never more than one bad article, comment, review, or accusation away from facing an existential crisis. With more than 20 years of experience, Nierman's crisis management agency is rooted in the company philosophy "Press the Truth." Nierman has guided international, celebrity, and corporate clients through complex high-stakes situations and has become a valued resource whose expertise is regularly tapped by the media. He is also the bestselling author of CRISIS AVERTED: PR Strategies to Protect Your Reputation and the Bottom Line. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Evan Nierman discuss:Defending your reputation from today's most common crisisAverting a crisis from true accusations Incongruence between public and personal identityCrisis management for non-profit organizations Key Takeaways:The advent of the internet has allowed the battle for an individual or company's reputation to be more brutal and urgent, with multiplicative damage that borders permanence.Never lose the opportunity to correct your company's internal narrative. Explain the truth to your members so that you can avoid confusion, discomfort, and fear that might make matters even worse. Internal unity is a huge advantage when it comes to making it through crises. Don't cover up the truth - it will make you look worse when it comes up if you lie about it or if you don't address it directly. Understand the facts, map out the target audience, and understand the implicated person's or people's intent - once you've identified all this, plan out activities and make your move. For the best results, bring in an outsider's opinion. Walk your talk - live your brand identity. But even the best fall down, and so no matter how new or unique your brand is, you need to invest in a crisis management team. It can even be argued that the more unique your brand is, the more critical it is for your company to keep it that way.Don't let the public form misconceptions - educate the public, press the truth, push a narrative clearly and assertively. That's how you change perceptions and attitudes. You can't just keep wishing or hoping that the public will come up with the truth themselves. Educate and inform the public to alleviate crises when it happens. "In cases where you have made a mistake... guess what, there's no individual... no organization in existence today that hasn't made mistakes... I think the general public understands that, but if you own it and you're transparent about it, and you're accountable, pledge to do better, and follow through with actions... you can regain trust. The public will forgive you and understand." — Evan Nierman See Dean's TedTalk "Why Business Needs Intuition" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Evan Nierman: Website: https://evannierman.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/redbanyanInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/redbanyanpr/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RedBanyan/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/evan-nierman/ Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370
