Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job
What do you want to be when you grow up? It's OK if you are still unable to answer this question, argues guest expert, Srinivas Rao. There's always time to change paths and find a more personally rewarding career that resonates with your passions. Most people try to create a linear career path; each new job is a stepping stone to ever increasing levels of responsibility. This thinking is driven by the chase for money and the expectations of others. But the real problem is that a linear career doesn't always lead to interesting jobs. Our interests change as we age, so we need to create opportunities to explore new directions in work. Choosing a job you enjoy allows you to thrive. You may get paid less, but you will be more productive, engaged, and happy. Of course, money is an always an issue. When planning a career, consider what jobs may increase your long-term earning potential, even at the expense of short-term salary. If you are a recent college graduate or have been let go from a position, use the time to evaluate what matters to you and prepare yourself for the job you want. As Srinivas says “sometimes it takes a disruption to initiate change.” If it feels like you are being herded in a particular direction to go along with the crowd, get a decent-paying job and settle in, it’s because you are. Social norms often dictate what people with normal jobs do. To find a compelling interesting career, you need to break the mold and focus on your own personal passions and interests. This Week's Guest: Srinivas Rao Srinivas Rao is the host and founder of The Unmistakable Creative podcast where he’s interviewed more than 600 thought leaders and people from all walks of life. Srinivas Rao (or “Srini” as he's often called) is the founder of Unmistakable Media, host of The Unmistakable Creative podcast and author of multiple books, including the Wall Street Journal bestseller The Art of Being Unmistakable. Srini's most recent book is Unmistakable: Why Only is Better Than Best. So when it comes to being not just recognizable, but undeniable, memorable and ultimately unmistakable...well, he literally wrote the book on it. In his podcast, Srini has conducted over 600 interviews (!) with thought leaders and people from all walks of life. This has cultivated an incredibly distinctive view on branding, storytelling, and marketing with so many great sources to draw from. Since so much of the creative process includes elements that are outside our control, Srini believes we have to fall in love with the process of what we do, and be less concerned with external feedback. While it's important for your business to track sales, and measure engagement, you have to decide, will you base your joy off of these numbers? One tip? Pick things that you'd choose to create even if you weren't getting paid, even if there was no way for people to “like” it or upvote it in some way. “When you're no longer concerned with all of these things you can't control, that really is a place of freedom.” When you let go of this need to manufacture some sort of result, when you can let go of those outcomes and focus on the process, all of the anxiety and energy that were put into outcomes are now translated into the process. Srini believes, the enemy of process is distraction. It's ally is a concept called Deep Work, introduced by Cal Newport, which is the ability to go into a cognitively demanding task for a long period of time. The more you do that, the more that you build what Srini calls Creative Momentum, the more you start to get into a state of Flow. “If you can actually resist the temptation for distraction, you will build your ability to go into deeper states of Flow, and not only that but you will sustain the ability to go into deeper states of flow for longer periods of time, and as a result things will actually get better.” Srini's book, Unmistakable: Why Only is Better Than Best, illustrates that anyone is capable of standing out from the crowd, being authentic, and avoiding the alluring trap of mimicking those that have come before them. How do you avoid succumbing to the tempting mimicry epidemic? Curiosity – “What are you naturally curious about? Not what you think will lead to some sort of result or outcome, but what is it that you are curious about?” Experimentation – “Experiments don't have to be expensive, don't have to be time-consuming, but they give you a tremendous amount of feedback.” “We're trying to boil down something that has no formula into a formula.” Srini is a passionate surfer, and his experience with the ocean has shifted not only the way he shows up in business, but also the way he shows up in relationships. For example He's cultivated resilience in the face of difficult situations. He also practices letting go of any expectations from these situations. “What you learn by being in the ocean is that the conditions are always changing. It's always dynamic, it's always interesting, and your job is to keep adjusting to what the conditions are. There are days where the conditions are perfect, but if you're just standing around waiting for the conditions to be perfect you'll never do anything, you'll never take any risks.” Srini is a wonderful guest and, indeed, unmistakable guest. He shares a lot of great tools and tips to improve our productivity, break free of distractions and become unmistakable. I greatly appreciate him stopping by, and you should go check out The Unmistakable Creative to hear more from Srini. SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: How does Srini cultivate more creativity in his life? What tips would Srini give people who are just starting out and haven't honed what makes them unmistakable yet? Where does Srini see the business going and what does the future of the Unmistakable brand looks like? Can Srini think of a habit or tool from his 600+ interviews that stands out that he has implemented in your own life? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How you can be Unmistakable. Mastery in anything is difficult to achieve. We all know that intuitively. But there s something in human nature that pushes us to look for the easy way, the shortcut, the exception to that rule. Today s guest is Srini Rao, a man who has discovered his path to mastery somewhat by accident and can attest to the fact that mastery by no means comes easily. In this conversation, you ll get to hear how Srini has reached the levels of success he has – as an author and podcaster – and what he s learned along the way. It s a conversation you won t want to miss. If you re at the beginning of your creative journey, where do you start? The journey toward mastery is daunting from whatever part of your journey you view it. But especially when you re starting out it can seem like an impossibility. If you are just getting started, how do you even know where to begin? On this episode of the podcast, Dane asks Srini that very question and he gets an answer that you might not expect. Be sure you take the time to listen to the wisdom of a man who has learned his lessons well. His creative spirit and enthusiasm for what can be accomplished by everyday people is quite inspiring. Too often we let the past dictate our future. It is not uncommon for all of us to think of the future in terms of the past. We think that since things have always gone a certain way, they will continue to go that way. We think that because we never had success in a certain realm or area we will not have success in that realm in the future. But today’s guest insists that we have to break out of that kind of thinking. The future has nothing to do with the past except that it is part of the same journey. The past does not dictate it, we dictate it by our choices and actions. You can hear this great conversation with Srini Rao, on this episode of Converge. Children know what it s like to live without impossibilities. When Srini Rao was working with 7th graders he discovered that they don’t think with the limitations that most adults do. One of his students asked him if kangaroos could box simply because he had seen a kangaroo boxing on a cartoon. It caused Srini To realize that children have not yet been taught that certain things are not possible. As a result, they continue to assume that possibilities exist in almost every area of life. He believes that when adults can move back to that place of belief they will be able to set their sights higher and accomplish more than they ever dreamed, simply because they learn to dream again. This is a great conversation that you will want to hear. On the journey to mastery don t take yourself too seriously. As we grow and develop, moving ever forward toward mastery, we can get to a place where every decision and every outcome seems like a crucial thing in our minds. We take ourselves too seriously and as a result don’t allow for the mistakes and missteps that are required to actually gain mastery. Srini Rao shares how he learned to relax and not take himself so seriously, on this episode. It’s a refreshing mindset, and in the high-pressure world of creativity and business, we would all do well to adopt it. You really did learn everything in kindergarten. "Your ability to take action in the face of unanswered questions is essential to accomplishing anything of significance." - Srinivas Rao The Cheat Sheet: What are gaba levels? (4:50) What have been the two themes throughout his career? (9:30) The unhealthy myths of a "self-running business" and of being a nomad. (13:30) Why you need patience when starting any new venture. (18:00) How to get back into the creative space of kindergarten. (31:50) Google's 20% time policy and how to apply it for success. (41:50) And so much more... A bank robber. A happiness expert. A hip hop artist. A CEO of a multi-million dollar company. Can you find the common thread? Maybe, maybe not. Our guest for episode 322 can; these are all types of people he has interviewed on his podcast, The Unmistakable Creative. On today's show Srinivas and I talk about the current state and future of podcasting, why comparing yourself to others is a losing battle, as well as the roles curiosity and creativity play in succeeding at business. Join us for all of that and so much more on this edition of The Art of Charm. More About This Show: Just a few short years ago, Srinivas was faced with the daunting task of finding work in a declining economy. He had just graduated business school and wanted to find work that would give him a creative outlet. He had had a social media internship but felt wholly unequipped to work in that field. So he began experimenting. He started a web site, but quickly stopped when he couldn't deliver on the topic of the site. Then he started a blog and started interviewing people. That experimentation eventually led to what is his podcast today, Unmistakable Creative. The show gets over 10,000 downloads an episode and allows Srinivas to connect with some of the most innovative and interesting people in the world. As we mentioned earlier, he's interviewed a bank robber, happiness experts, behaviorists and super successful CEOs. The show has been so successful and has such a wide appeal is the varied guests but also Srinivas' approach to podcasting. He views it as a craft, an art form that must be invested in, worked on and molded into its finest form. To do this, he naturally analyzes his previous shows and looks at what to do better in the future, but he also turns off distractions and unplugs. Some of his greatest inspirations and breakthroughs have come through unrelated activities, like surfing. He also did an experiment where he spent 20 hours learning to do something he was terrible at: drawing. As a result of studying the art of drawing, he also saw the impact in his business. It's a practice he recommends to everyone: experiment with art and see where it takes you. Go out and sing, take an improv class and explore the new insights it gives you. Not only will art give you insights, it also provides a much-needed reprieve from our information-overload society. Srinivas has discovered the value in unplugging and being conscious of what information he's taking in, and he suggests everyone do the same. There is scientific evidence to support him; science has shown that our environment can and does have a significant impact on our overall well-being. One final topic we discuss is the state of podcasting. We dive into the reasons why anyone doing an interview show needs to take the craft seriously and why it's important to cultivate relevant, interesting content (and why that is no small feat). Even if you aren't a podcaster or an entrepreneur, we cultivate relevant information for you in this show. ? Join Jerry and Jackie as they talk to Srinivas Rao of theskooloflife.com and unmistakablecreative.com. Srini is a surfer and a writer. His most recent book is "The Art of of Being Unmistakable". Srini says, "I believe there are things you should have learned in school but never did. In April 2009, I completed my MBA at Pepperdine University. After two degrees, 10 years of work experience, and a series of failed relationships I never felt more unprepared for life. A few weeks later my bank balance literally hit zero and I moved back to my parents house. It seemed like I was right back where I started at the age of 18 when I went off to UC-Berkeley for my first degree. That summer I became obsessed with surfing because I needed a way to escape how bad my life had become. That was the start of an incredible journey of riding waves, building a media empire, and sharing my ideas with the world. I became a student of The Skool of Life."
