More stories from behind the curtain and this time with a focus on what happens when dancers are offstage. Told from a stage managers vantage point we hear that the organized beauty and grace an audience sees on stage is far from the whole picture. From illness and injury to unwanted animals and weather. The miracles behind making sure the show will go on are endless. Why would anyone deal with all these obstacles? Well as you'll hear its for the love of the art of live performance.  Contact me at Standbys@standbytostanby.org to share your stories of stagehands, designers, performers, technical directors, company managers and anyone else involved in bringing live events to theatre's, concert halls, arena's and other venues around the world.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Richard Hester, Broadway Stage Manager and Production Supervisor & Author, “HOLD PLEASE: Stage Managing a Pandemic” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Richard Hester, is a highly respected stage manager and production supervisor for Broadway shows and touring productions throughout the world.   He's worked on many shows including “Wicked”, “Cabaret”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Annie Get Your Gun”, “Gypsy”, “West Side Story”, and many more.  For MANY years he's been the international production supervisor for “Jersey Boys”.  He travels on the road with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin on their concert tours.  And for over 20 years, he's been one of the lead producers of the “Broadway Barks” animal shelter adoption event with Bernadette Peters, that's held every summer in New York City.   When the pandemic hit in March 2020, the entire entertainment industry abruptly and indefinitely came to a crashing halt.  Our guest decided to start writing a blog on social media, which, over time, was read and enjoyed by thousands of people.  His thought-provoking and insightful essays were not just about covid.  He wrote about EVERYTHING:  from his love of New York City and the world of theatre, to the Black Lives Matter movement and the chaotic, profoundly troubling events in American politics, leading up to and following the presidential election.   His daily columns have been compiled into a brand new book entitled, “Hold, Please: Stage Managing a Pandemic”.  And those essays, written from March 12, 2020 to June 10, 2021, collectively continue to give us insights, food for thought and guidance in multiple ways. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://richardhester.com/https://www.facebook.com/richard.hester.92https://www.instagram.com/toasternyc/ #RichardHester  #harveybrownstoneinterviews

She's tour managed for artists such as Clairo, The Mowglis, Magic Giant, The Staves, Loote, Wrabel, and production managed/stage-managed the festival Girlschool and She Rocks Awards 2018 & 2020. In 2015 she added Guitar-Backline teching to her skill-set working for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Against Me!, Plain White T's, and Tegan and Sara. She also had a chance to jump behind the board running FOH for Wrabel, but would still consider herself very much a novice when it comes to sound engineering. She serves as a TM/PM mainly but pulls double duty Tour Managing & Teching when tours require it. During the 'pause' in the touring industry she found work as a Covid Compliance Officer for the ABC/Disney Show REBEL, and adopted a corgi, named Covax both of which kept her pretty busy most of last year. Hi Friend, welcome to the blog and show notes for Episode 41 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast. On Episode 41, my awesome guest is Stage Manager Cynthia Hennon Marino.  Her work with the ground-breaking immersive-devised opera, The Wreck, is just one of the things we discuss.   I’m your SallyPAL podcast host, Sally Adams. And every week I talk to people about creating original work for a live audience. Send an email anytime to Sally@sallypal.com. Because your ideas keep great conversations coming every week.   Check out sallypal.com/join for a cool free theatre resource called the Creator’s Notebook. You can also be a Sally ‘pal’ just by joining. There are other good reasons to join. Members get theatre cartoons, inside scoop on fresh productions, and entry into a larger creator community.   Stage Manager Cynthia Hennon Marino hit the ground running after getting an MFA in Stage Management from the College-Conservatory of Music. She went to New York and got hired almost immediately. She became a production assistant on the Broadway production of Equus starring Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe in 2008.   Cindy's journey started when she and her identical twin, Stacy Hennon Stone, did props for the musical Anything Goes their freshmen year of high school. The two now host a podcast called Twins Talk Theatre. The show is a series of great convos about working backstage.   Sister Stacy is a professional technical director in Long Beach, California. But neither twin planned on becoming a theatre professional. Cindy started by pursuing a degree in math. Stacy started in the business school. But theatre has powerful magnetic pull.   Each Hennon sister graduated from a different college with a theatre degree. Cindy’s sister headed to Southern California. Cindy followed when she found work with Palos Verdes Performing Arts.   Cindy and I talk about Long Beach Opera, the opera, Nixon in China, the LA opera, Hopscotch, and Portland Opera. She currently stage manages the opera, Faust, with the Oregon company. This latest venture features 3-D projections based on the work of sculptor John Frame.   The projections and projection mapping are a collaboration among designers Frame, Vita Tzykun, David Adam Moore, and Duane Schuler. It’s received a lot of attention from a previous reveal with Lyric opera in Chicago. Opera Wire called this production “a visual feast for the ages.”   But Portland’s production isn’t the most progressive thing Cindy’s done this year. In March, she and a small contingent with Opera Omaha embarked on a rare journey. The work they created is unique.   The Wreck is an immersive devised opera created in only 10 days. The Wreck borrows music and other bits from Slavik mythology and mermaid folklore. It features the writings of Anne Sexton, Alice Walker, and Adrienne Rich. It also floats on the music of Donizetti, Schubert, and Von Bingen. Ukrainian composer Mariana Sadovska adds new music creating an eclectic, otherwordly piece set in Omaha… sort of.   I know you’re going to enjoy what Cynthia has to say about stage managing and opera. There’s plenty of fresh ideas in the world of live opera performance. I can’t wait to see what she does next. “You can’t shortcut feet on the stage. You can’t wish or pay your way to being a better speaker. Speak, speak, speak—that’s the way to get good at speaking.” - Tami Evans (click to tweet) Public speaking isn’t for everyone. But before we cross it off our list, we have to make sure we’ve given it a fair shot. That’s because the best public speakers—while they may appear naturally gifted on stage, it is most likely hours and hours of rehearsal driving the performance. In public speaking, there is no such thing as god-given talent or a ‘knack’ for performance. Rather, success on stage boils down to work ethic, rehearsal, and practice. On today’s episode of Steal the Show, we are joined by the humorous speaker Tami Evans to clear the mystery of performing on stage. With a Master’s in Classical Acting, Tami has been performing in some way, shape, or form for most of her life. She is the former president of the New York chapter of the National Speakers Association, and today works on the public speaking circuit. In this conversation, we unpack all topics related to public speaking—what makes a great public speaker, why introverts do well on stage, how the public speaking industry is evolving to be more inclusive of diversity, and much more. Learn more about Tami Evans and her humorous motivational speaking style here. “When someone looks so effortless, it’s because they have put in so much time and effort to get it that way.” - Tami Evans (click to tweet) Steal the Points Rehearse to the point of clarity where improvisation doesn’t feel intimidating. The best way to begin something is to start it. Try to have slogans that are easy to understand and remember. Join the National Speakers Association (NSA) to make public speaking a less isolating career. There is no clear path in the public speaker industry. Content creation is a messy process that involves diving into the unknown. Being authentic becomes easier through preparation. There is becoming more equalization of gender and culture in the public speaker landscape. Public speaking is shifting from a stylized, scripted talk into a more conversational delivery. Many of the best performers are actually shy and introverted. Adjusting on the fly becomes comfortable with more experience. Some people are energized by interacting with other people, and others are depleted by it.
