'On the road again'! This time I bring the van and motorcycle to visit Austin, Texas, for SXSW from March 10th to 19th, 2023. I had a blast learning about what's hot and poppin' in the world of tech, music and film. This was my 3rd time attending the event (2016, 2022) and it was awesome. Fowler. Two bodies of work, 'BARCODE' and 'HUNTY' are being shown concurrently and explore toxic masculinity through a queer lens. Objects playfully augmented with embroidery and embellished with glitter are given new meanings with a shifting context. Beneath the surface, Fowler is igniting conversations of mens' role in feminism and their responsibility to interrogate and dismantle patriarchy. YASSIFIED runs until FEBRUARY 18th, 2022. For our 16th episode, I sit down with novelist, actor, director & professor Rod Carley to talk about the practices he incorporates into his day to channel his creativity. We discuss leadership, the creative process, released and upcoming novels, the joy of teaching, his journey as an artist and the real value of finding your authentic voice. Rod Carley's second novel, KINMOUNT, won the Silver Medal for Best Regional Fiction from the 2021 Independent Publishers Book Awards and was one of ten books long-listed for the 2021 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medallion for Humour. His first novel, A Matter of Will, was a finalist for the 2018 Northern Lit Award for Fiction. His short stories have appeared in Cloud Lake Literary, Blank Spaces Magazine, the non-fiction anthology 150 Years Up North and More, and HighGrader Magazine. Latitude 46 Publishing is releasing his new interconnected collection of short stories, GRIN REAPING, in the Summer of 2022. Rod is a graduate of the Humber School for Writers and is currently the Artistic Director of the Acting for Stage and Screen Program for Canadore College. He recently directed All in the Timing for Theatre Canadore. He is also a part-time English professor at Nipissing University. Rod has directed over 125 productions to date, both nationally and internationally, ranging from the classics to the development of new Canadian work. He was the 2009 winner of TVO's Big Ideas/Best Lecturer Competition. Rod was the first recipient of the Stratford Festival's Jean Gascon Director's Award and received four Tyrone Guthrie Awards over his career. Film/television acting credits include 3 seasons on Hard Rock Medical (TVO), Cardinal (CTV), and Carter (Sony Pictures). In our 15th episode, Richard has a heart-to-heart with Audio engineer, producer and musician Shawn Sasynuik reflecting on their pasts and how their journeys have helped them grow to where they are today. Shawn speaks his mind and shares his thoughts on working on musicians to bring our their best and his experiences working with francophone artists. A native of North Bay, Ontario, Shawn Sasyniuk combines heavy grooves with musical savvy. Peetr Nickle - master of everything audio - sits down with Richard to discuss his start and passion for audio engineering and technology and his thoughts on past experiences on how the community can change to have a more arts and culture scene. Peetr is from the hills of Armour Township, settled in and raised two North Bay after many escapades around the country. He's made his living in audio production for the last 25 years, and put together recordings and shows while working as a dogsled guide and guitar/vacuum tech prior to committing to full audio life. He built festivals and one-off shows around Ontario and is lucky enough to tour Canada and Europe with a couple of bands, one over the top crusty punk rock crew, and one over the top crazy French pop crew. He takes care of a brilliant seventies studio on Lakeshore Drive, recording and mixing and such. He is the Technical Director of the Capitol Centre in downtown North Bay, making sure that shows in the almost one hundred-year-old theatre are world class experiences. Sometimes he has time to blast punky bass or weird art noise at lucky audiences when he manages to get together with his hoodlum friends in various local posh pubs and grimy dives. Not too often. Multi-Talented Artist Vanessa Tignanelli sits down with Richard to discuss the many ongoing opportunities and projects she has in several different artistic mediums and her purpose and goals as an artist. Artistic Director of the On The Edge Fringe Festival Kelsey Ruhl sits down with Richard to discuss her personal path as an actress in Northern Ontario as well as the ever-growing On the Edge Fringe Festival. Kelsey Ruhl is a Theatre Arts graduate of Canadore College. Ruhl first appeared in the docudrama Harold and Lorna and has since appeared in the feature films The Captive, Christmas with Tucker, Algonquin, Christmas Inheritance, Midnight Masquerade, Valentine Ever After, Crossword Mystery, Christmas at Cartwright's and James Vs. His Future Self; working alongside actors such as Ryan Reynolds, Nicholas Campbell and James Brolin. As well as appearing in the television series' Slasher, Hard Rock Medical, Carter, Letterkenny and Unsettled. Kelsey has also worked on numerous stage productions and is a proud member of the Proscenium Club, a touring theatre group that premieres new Canadian works. Executive Director of Creative Industries in North Bay, Jaymie Lathem, sits down with Richard on today's episode to not only discuss what it's like to push yourself as an artist, but the ways we can beautify the community with art and projects Creative Industries is doing to help with this movement. Jaymie is an emerging artist based out of Northern Ontario. She studied drawing & painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Alberta College of Art and Design. She received her BFA from Nipissing University in 2011. Jaymie remains a practicing visual artist with a focus in drawing and has exhibited work throughout Ontario. Over the past decade Jaymie has worked in various community based and creative sector organizations across the Nipissing Region. She has a strong passion for the arts and believes North Bay and it's surrounding community can be a thriving creative base in the North. Primarily focused in drawing and themes of memory and identity, her work plays with the amount of visual information needed to identify a gesture, a part of the body, or an expression. Content Creator Kevin Love sits down with Richard to discuss his beginnings, journey to Canada and his adventure to break into the media industry with his business K. Love Productions. Kevin Love was born and raised on the small island of Nassau, Bahamas. From a young age, he had an interest in the field of arts and entertainment. With an active imagination, he took it upon himself to learn the art of acting. It started with performing on stage in school, to acting on stage in college and local theatre. This eventually evolved to creating a YouTube channel. He then moved on to performing for his local church and lead their Drama Team. Kevin, being able to act in a few films, was granted the opportunity to see the production side of the entertainment industry. It then became clear that he was interested in gaining more knowledge of being behind the camera. Kevin began doing research on the process of filmmaking, resulting in him creating a few short films for himself. Still being a part of his local church, he branched away from acting and joined the media team, starting with lighting the stage and leading to camera operations. This is where Kevin learned how to Direct the cameramen and operate industry-standard equipment. At this point, his wife, Ashley, noticed the glow on his face whenever he was behind a camera. With her encouragement, they pursued various avenues to get the proper training to film and edit videos professionally. This led them to travel abroad to North Bay, to study at Canadore College in the TV Broadcasting and Video Editing Program. During his two-year course, Kevin has built relationships and took advantage of the opportunities presented before him. Kevin aspires to be an elite Camera Operator and Video Editor. Although his studies are completed, he takes it upon himself to further improve his skill by being self-taught. Up and coming digital media creator Darren Summersby discusses his changes and growth as an artist in today's industry and his adapting to it with the COVID-19 pandemic. Darren Summersby was born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. First introduced to performing arts at the age of 7, Darren has taken part in over 50 productions both on stage and off. During his high school years, Darren took part in the Sears Drama Festival (now the NTS Drama Festival) winning both Awards of Merit for Stage Managing and Award of Excellence at the the Distract and Provincial levels for his role of Larry Dixon in Colours in the Storm (The Company). Darren is trained in vocals, having won several first place ribbons at the Kiwanis Music Festival.Darren's interest in film began in 2010 when he was cast in the short film The Autumn Girl and 2012 for the horror-musical film Stage Fright with Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. From there, he became his passion in the film industry. In his senior year of high school, Darren won gold in the Film and Television category at Skills Ontario, going on to represent Team Ontario in Film and Television at the National level. Following high school, he directed and produced a micro-short film entitled Moving On which was selected in nearly a dozen International Film Festivals. He studied at Sheridan College in the Honours Bachelor of Film and Television Program. During his time at Sheridan, Darren interned with the popular children network YTV. Darren had the honour of directing the first-ever Musical Short Film as a thesis film in his program at Sheridan. The film, What Comes Next, has gone on to not only be selected into multiple international film festivals but to win Best Film at several festivals around the world. ​Darren now resides in North Bay, Ontario. He has always been very interested in military history. Since 1983 he spent most of his summers backpacking throughout the world exploring ancient and modern battlefields. He has been making trips to Europe each year since 1991 to study the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars. In 1997 he began leading groups on battlefield tours throughout Europe.
