Earlier this month, the 2022 Grammys ran its first-ever category for Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media -- a long-overdue recognition of the value of video game scores as a legitimate method of expression, and a source of some incredible music. And among an initial crop of stellar composers offering intriguing sounds to all manner of video games big and small, it was a DLC, of all things, that took home the prize: the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC for Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Valhalla.   While the base game put you in the shoes of a Viking descendant of the Norse god Odin, Dawn of Ragnarok puts you right in Odin's shoes, telling a mournful, mythological tale of revenge that required a huge, bombastic sound suffused with Nordic muscle. Stephanie Economou, fresh off previous Valhalla DLC The Siege of Paris, took to that assignment with her signature gusto: She recruited black metal band Wilderun to contribute tracks and give her an education on the genre itself, her frequent collaborator Ari Mason to contribute vocals, and the show-stopping title theme saw her collaborating with Assassin's Creed musical titan Einar Selvik.   It's a pulse-pounding, immersive score that's as big as its game, and Economou sat down to talk with us the week before the Grammys to discuss the building of that score, how it dovetailed into her growth as a composer, and how it feels to be the first female Grammy nominee for Best Original Video Game Score.   You can find Stephanie Economou at her official website here.   Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok is currently available to play on  PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lakeshore Records.

My guests for this episode are the film-scoring duo Ryan Miller and Jay Lifton. Ryan is a founding member and the lead singer of Guster, who recently celebrated their 31st consecutive year of touring and recording. He has scored over 15 feature films and has worked with directors Colin Trevorrow, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Lake Bell, and Zoe Lister-Jones.  Jay Lifton is a Brooklyn-based composer who has worked with Alicia Silverstone, Kirsten Smith, Sean Baker, Paul Feig, and Errol Morris. He somewhat recently scored an episode of This American Life as well as the documentary RABBLE ROUSERS, which is about the forces behind NYC gentrification and urban displacement. Both Ryan and Jay have great resumes for their work in film and commercials. The pair teamed up to score Reese Witherspoon's film "Something from Tiffany's", which premiered this past holiday season on Prime Video. The film follows the story of a woman as her life gets upended when an engagement ring that was for someone else leads her to the person she's meant to be with. I watched the trailer and was struck by how beautiful it looked. Then, of course, I noticed the music. We talk about "Something from Tiffany's," Guster, their respective journies toward film scoring, the value of attending film festivals, music in video games, and more. Please enjoy my conversation with Ryan Miller and Jay Lifton. Support the Unstarving Musician The Unstarving Musician exists solely through the generosity of its listeners, readers, and viewers. There will not be a live show on February 12th due to a social gathering revolving around a television commercial watching event. The Free Twitter API was originally being discontinued on the 9th (this changed) but when it does go down, there's a chance the console screenshot sharing functionality will cease to work. I went to an XR Atlanta meetup this past week, and while there was talk of the "metaverse" (that nobody can define) there was a LOT of talk about how GPT-3 bots will make artists obsolete and there are plenty of people ready to hop on that bandwagon. Learn to prompt?! The first true video game GRAMMY award has been awarded to Stephanie Economou for Assassin???s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok!
