Whether it's an attack by another marine creature, or disorientation in a noisy ocean, there are various reasons for marine mammals to wash up on the shoreline. So how do we find out the cause of each stranding? The Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme (SMASS) undertakes forensic investigations into strandings around the Scottish coast. Its work complements marine mammal research at institutes like SAMS and helps to piece together what's happening in the unseen underwater world. In this episode, we meet Dr Andrew Brownlow of SMASS and Prof Ben Wilson, a marine mammal expert at SAMS, to discuss how investigations are carried out and why strandings might happen. They also reveal the surprising culprit behind the disturbing 'porpicide' events that see badly injured harbour porpoises wash up on beaches around the world. The Ocean Explorer podcast is produced by the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), an ocean research institute and partner of UHI based in Oban.In each episode, we take a deep dive into marine science topics with SAMS scientists and special guests.Interested in working or studying with us, or helping with our work? The Long Table: Conversations at Upstart & Crow Literary Arts Studio
In Strandings: Confessions of a Whale Scavenger, and in this conversation, the fate of whales becomes a metaphor for our greed and continued disconnection to nature. Through stories of beached whales, unexpected community and a potted history of humans we begin to better understand our future. Join Upstart Co-Founder Zoe Grams and Dr. Peter Riley for a discussion on “controlling the flight instinct” when we consider our late-stage capitalism reality; about whales and ideological purity (and its downfalls); about connection, environmentalism and cognitive living or death. It may not be at our in-studio Long Table, but here is a warm discussion of reality and possibility. Part of Upstart & Crow's Climate Series events. About StrandingsA genre-defying book of intellect, heart and page-turning anecdotes and philosophy, Strandings has received glowing reviews from across the UK and beyond. “It is at once incisive and funny, personal and historical, gripping and moving.” — Merlin Sheldrake, author of Entangled Life About the Author Dr. Peter Riley is a Senior Lecturer in American Literature at the University of Exeter, and the inaugural winner of the Profile-Aitken Alexander Prize. He has an appropriate specialisation in Herman Melville, and has been investigating the world of the whale scavengers since his teens. He is currently working on three more books (editing one, writing two) and is making a radio documentary based on Strandings, which is due to air on BBC Radio 4 next year.

Electronic adventures at the fantastic Smokehouse in Ipswich. Friendship is a large part of the music experience. We meet friends at gigs, we're in bands with friends, and sometimes, when the stars align we get to put on gigs featuring friends. Then there are the magical occasions whereby we are able to promote a gig for a friend who has lived abroad for years and is back in the UK for just a short time. This episode is about one of those magical times. Sure, the huge acts can afford impressive light shows and enough lasers to upset commercial air traffic, but what can artists who haven't already made millions do to make gigs more interesting? In this episode of the American Shoreline Podcast, co-hosts Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham dive into the controversial topic of recent whale strandings on the east coast of the US and the alleged connection between these events and the development of offshore wind. Their guest, Dr. Jill Lewandowski, Director of the BOEM Environmental Assessment and the Center for Marine Acoustics, sheds light on how science is used to guide BOEM's decision-making process, particularly in relation to marine mammals and marine acoustics. Dr. Lewandowski emphasizes that there is no scientific evidence linking the whale strandings to offshore wind development.

For most people, seeing a whale or a dolphin is a memory of a lifetime. Sadly, sometimes whales and dolphins beach themselves and having seen them frolicking in the ocean, our gut-instinct could be trying to get them back into the water immediately. However, in most cases, when a whale or a dolphin beaches themselves, there is a reason and that may be that they're sick or old and trying to get them back into the water could actually create more stress on them. So in this week's episode I'll be talking to you through what to do when you come across a dolphin or whale that is still alive but that will most likely not survive. Please be advised that this subject may require careful consideration when listening with children. The mantra of anything ocean related is always: When in doubt stay out! This week, Winter Storm Gia, they’ve been naming them for a few years now, will spread a swath of snow and ice from parts of the Rockies, Plains and Midwest to the mid-Atlantic into this weekend, hopefully not causing more than a few travel delays. Yeah, I know, winter storms occur every year in the United States, but if you don’t take them seriously, they can cause fatalities among the unprepared. And, sadly, that’s just what they do. 70% of deaths in blizzard conditions occur due to traffic accidents and 25% from hypothermia, sometimes called exposure, from being caught outside or even inside without a heat source. With Gia’s strong winds, trees and power lines burdened with heavy snowfall may topple, causing additional hazards. If a blizzard knocks the power out, but you’re still in your home (a great place to be), you’re gonna want a strategy, a plan of action. Joe and Amy Alton, aka Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy, tell you what you need to know. Hypothermia and other cold-related issues must be identified and treated with quick action if you want to save a life. Dr. Alton tells you how to identify, treat, and prevent medical trauma related to exposure. Plus, what to do on the backcountry hike when someone yells "AVALANCHE!". Ways you can protect yourself and increase your chances of surviving this catastrophic event! All this and more on the Survival Medicine Hour podcast with Joe Alton MD and Amy Alton ARNP Don't forget to check out Nurse Amy's line of medical kits and supplies at store.doomandbloom.net and our latest book "Alton's Antibiotics and Infectious Disease", a guide for the layman on how to use antibiotics available to the average citizen in times of trouble, available on Amazon!

There is a big problem in San Francisco Bay: A number of sharks and other fish are washing ashore dead. Sean van Sommeran is on the front lines making sure each fish is processed and analyzed to find out why. Sean's organization, The Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, is partnering with the Marine Mammal Center and some researchers who specialize in fish health to help determine why a number of different sharks such as leopard sharks, white sharks and other fish (eagle rays, etc.) are washing up on the shore dead. These strandings have bee occurring for the past 5-6 weeks and it's not the first time this type of stranding event has occurred.
