What is a “Final Fantasy”? And if it's so double-effing-final, how are there 15 … plus like 100 more?! This week, the Action Pack breaks down Nico's all-time favorite video game series to celebrate the landmark sales of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters & Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line and their emergence onto the PS4 & Switch! The team cover Final Fantasy I-VI in their MANY iterations - the characters, the stories, THE SUMMONS, OBVIOUSLY; and then get ready to DANCE with Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line, the most recent in a series of rhythm games taking the characters from the Final Fantasy Universes and giving them the SMB3 Intro treatment - celebrating the worldwide phenomenon that is FF music (and the music of the greater Square Enix company)!
Final Fantasy XVI is out! And I have some early spoiler-free impressions. I talk about the gameplay, story, and a surprising take on the diversity issue surrounding the game. E3 has been cancelled in 2024 and 2025...At least in Los Angeles. Doesn't mean it won't happen elsewhere, but let's be honest, it's not very likely. The FTC has sued to block the Microsoft-Activision merger, and the trial has started. In emails released to the court, Sony said that they'd be okay and that they knew from the beginning it wasn't about exclusivity. Sony testified that they would withhold PS6 devkits from Activision if there is a merger, meaning that Activision games would not be able to use PS6 specific features. (They already do not provide PS5 devkits to Mojang, which is why there is not a Minecraft version natively on PS5.) Then we talk to Rob about Final Fantasy XVI and how the music in it is at least one of the final music packs for Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line.
This week on The Free Cheese, how many eggs? As we close out the month of June, we discuss our Game of the Year so far and share updates on what we're looking most forward to playing in the remaining months. On this episode of Random Encounter, we're diving into some recent non-RPG Final Fantasy spin-offs!First up, we have the first console entry in the long-running Final Fantasy rhythm game series, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. Offering over 380 songs from every Final Fantasy game (with more songs from other Square Enix series on the way), it could be the ultimate entry of Theatrhythm, but does it get Bob tapping his toes along with the music? And then, the Shinra Electric Power Company puts our EiC Mike Salbato to work cleaning instruments of death in the Final Fantasy VII Remake DLC of PowerWash Simulator. Will he manage to clean the nooks and crannies of the Scorpion Sentinel in time to stop the criminal terrorist group, Avalanche? Heya! I bet you weren’t expecting this episode of Nerds Without Pants so soon! Well, since we got delayed a week with our first episode back from hiatus we decided to record this one a week later to stay on the schedule we had planned. It’s an all-Consumption Junction edition of NWP because we…had a ton of games to talk about! In a surprise twist Justin played The Sims 4. He also checked out Chained Echoes. Julian finished Crisis Core and has some thoughts about the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, and tries to explain some thoughts he’s been having about RPGs. Then it’s a quick mention of Theatrhythm Final Bar Line before an EXTENSIVE discussion of Fire Emblem Engage. We have a couple quick hits before ending with some bigger games like Hi-Fi Rush and God of War: Ragnarok!
