In episode 30, Johnny talks to Academy Award-winning art director and production designer Grant Major. Described by Vanity Fair as ‘the architect of New Zealand's greatest cinematic achievements', Grant has an impressive body of work. His work in the early 1990s on Jane Campion's An Angel At My Table led him to work with Peter Jackson on Heavenly Creatures. He remained in the Peter Jackson fold on The Frighteners, followed by the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and King Kong. He also worked on Niki Caro's Whale Rider in the early 2000s, and recently reprised his collaboration with Jane Campion on the Oscar-nominated The Power Of The Dog. Grant has been nominated for five Academy Awards, winning the Oscar in 2003 for his work on The Return Of The King. Their talk covers Grant's career from working in New Zealand television in the 1970s and the BBC in the 1980s, to conquering Hollywood with Jane Campion and Peter Jackson throughout the 1990s and beyond. They discuss Grant's influences from filmmakers like David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and Ray Harryhausen, and Grant shares what it's like to witness the first and only take of a devastatingly emotional Oscar-nominated acting performance! New Zealand month continues as we tackle our first Māori text with Witi Ihimaera's 1987 novel and Niki Caro's 2002 film adaptation. The book is short but beautiful, particularly the unusual "framing" device from a whale's perspective that provides an underlying religious element. The film plays more like a standard coming-of-age tale made for a broad (read: white) audience. It's still good, but the intention is surprisingly different considering the many 1-to-1 adaptation choices that were made.References:> Ed. Gonzalez. MOVIE DISCUSSION: Melanie and Melvin discuss the poignantly melancholic New Zealand film, Whale Rider, one of Melanie's favorite movies! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 22-minutes of discussing specific qualities we love (and hate!) in movies with examples, and why these things work (or don't!). (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Whale Rider opens on an extremely dour note, which functionally means it's a great tone-setter for a dour movie!Keisha Castle-Hughes is particularly stellar in a movie that's already stacked with excellent performances. The character of the grandfather made Whale Rider very difficult for Melvin to watch. Not out of anything personal, but just because his character is so insufferable. The ending of Whale Rider is conflicting, so Melvin and Melanie explain more about the movie before explaining more about their feelings.Regardless of cultural strain, a community often produces the same toxic attributes when it is in deterioration: lethargy, apathy, and a drunken sleaze. Cultural rejuvenation, however, can come in multiple ways. The two curiously ponder other movies that contain healthy depictions of non-Anglo-Saxon cultures.Melvin angry-rants about the poor streaming quality of Whale Rider on both Peacock and Prime (two services it was available on at the time of recording). He frustratingly ponders the state of film preservation in the age of streaming.
On the surface, The Mother looks like just another skippable action flick on Netflix, but upon closer inspection, its skippability quickly decreases. First, it stars Jennifer Lopez as a military-trained assassin who comes out of hiding to protect her estranged daughter against revenge-crazed criminals. If you're still not sold, it's also directed by Niki Caro, who helmed The Zookeeper's Wife, North Country, McFarland USA... and the live-action remake of Mulan. In this episode, we review a movie that has every right to be a lot of mindless fun, at the very least, and discuss if it truly lives up to its potential.
In this special episode we check out Netflix's Original film from 2023, the action thriller ‘The Mother' directed by Niki Caro starring Jennifer Lopez, Joseph Fiennes, Lucy Paez, Omari Hardwick, Paul Raci and Gael Garcia Bernal. This Netflix movie was directed by Niki Caro and stars Jennifer Lopez, Omari Hardwick, Joseph Fiennes & Gael Garcia Benal. In this action thriller, Jennifer Lopez plays a former military sniper who is forced to abandon her own child in order protect from the drug lord she was investigating. After 12 years, the Cartel find the girl and Lopez springs into action in order save her. Lopez also serves as a producer on the film.
This week we start by reviewing Matt Johnson's tech bro dramedy BLACKBERRY (2:27), which stars Glenn Howerton, Jay Baruchel, and Johnson himself, and chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the famous BlackBerry smartphone. Next, we cover Niki Caro's Netflix action film THE MOTHER (29:37), which stars Jennifer Lopez as a sniper and former arms dealer who comes out of hiding to protect her daughter from her ex-business associates (Gael Garcia Bernal and Joseph Fiennes) who are seeking revenge on her. And in our Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Martin Scorsese's MEAN STREETS in honor of its 50th anniversary this year!

Book Vs. Movie: Mulan The AD 6th Century Poem Vs. the 2020 Disney Live-Action FilmThe Margos are celebrating AAPI month and we are very excited about the heroine from the poem Ode to Mulan who was either a real-life Calvary soldier or not. Her bravery (fighting against “nomadic hordes”) in replacing her father in battle by disguising herself as a boy has been told since the 6th Century AD. First transcribed in the Musical Records of Old and New, during the Southern Chen dynasty (according to Wikipedia!) it was first adapted as a play in 1593 and subsequent versions used different names for the lead character. The family name is Hua which means flower and Mulan stands for “Magnolia” in Chinese. The Ballad of Mulan takes place in Northern China with Mulan's father being asked to fight off the nomadic Rourans. However, he is too old for battle and her brother is too young--so she goes to fight instead. She fights for ten years and is then asked what reward she would like for her efforts. She asks to go home and return to her former life. In the end, she claims women and men fighting next to each other should not be an anomaly. There have been several films and operas based on the story of Mulan and in this episode, we discuss the 2020 live-action version directed by Niki Caro and starring Yifei Liu, Jet Li, and Gong Li. Wrap yourself in a blanket and grab an arsenal of tissue paper; this week the siblings have a heartfelt chat about Eden's favorite movie: 2002's 'Whale Rider.' Niki Caro directs this beautiful New Zealand-based heart wrencher, and both Eden and Sam bawled their damn eyes out. Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for her stunning performance as Paikea, but was robbed by the Monster-ous Charlize Theron. A truly amazing film, and the sibs give it the highest of recommendations. In the second and final segment of the show, Sam blind pitches three movies with people riding unusual things for episode 41.Hosts: Eden Robards, Sam RobardsInstagram: storageroommovieboomTwitter: storageroompodEmail: storageroompod@gmail.com
Niki Caro was making only her 2nd movie when she wrote and directed Whale Rider, so she showed the world her skills really early on. This sweet story aimed directly at kids (despite its absurd PG rating) is all about an ordinary (yet also magical) girl from New Zealand who loves her grandfather to pieces, but the maddening gramps is a slave to the patriarchy and blames his granddaughter for every problem in the village. It takes him so very long to realize that…she's The One. Keisha Castle-Hughes made her debut here and she is tremendous, as are all the key players in the cast. This remains a delightful and emotional motion picture all these years later, even if Rawiri Paratene's cruel grandpa is hard to like for almost the entire running time. The word “hate” was thrown around. Anyway, don't sulk in bed because life threw a few rocks your way. Just curl up with the 416th Ellises' Analysis and accept (and for the love of Paikea return) the love offered to you by the awesomest people in your life, whether they can ride a whale or not. Well, Actually: We changed our schedule between the recording of this episode and the recording of the next one (which will be Minari), so that's why there's no Coming Attractions Trivia question. Also, Jackie Cooper was an even-younger Best Actor nominee in 1931 than Keisha Castle-Hughes was a Best Actress nominee in 2003. Also also, Koro has a whale's tooth necklace, not a a shark's tooth necklace. When you're up all night trying to un-beach a bunch of whales, you should buy heaps of Sparkplug Coffee. Those good Sparkpluggers will even provide you a 20% discount on your next order. Use our promo code (“top100project”) and a-saving you will do. Niki Caro's heartfelt story of love, tradition and inspiration is one of our favourites. Whale Rider follows the complicated relationship between village elder Koro (Rawiri Paretene) and his granddaughter Paikea (Keisha Castle-Hughes). Despairing over the decline of the Maori people he leads, Koro seeks a successor among the village's first-born sons - all the while ignoring and even chastising Paikea for the leadership qualities she can't help but express.Rich, Kofi & Blake discuss the remarkable performances and filmmaking on display, as well as the ways in which traditions and expectations can complicated even the most loving relationships.

Mulan is a 2020 American fantasy action drama film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Niki Caro, with a screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1998 animated film of the same name, itself based on the Chinese folklore story, "The Ballad of Mulan". The film stars Yifei Liu in the title role, alongside Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles. The plot takes place in Imperial China, where Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, masquerades as a man to take her ailing father's place during a general conscription to counter the Rouran army. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulan_(2020_film)
Remember the innocent 90s, when white directors thought they had the N-word pass for some reason? What do you think their “woke” movie would look like? Probably like this, where the N-word is replaced by horrific rape and Mexican jokes. This proto-edgelord movie was looked at as such a good time romp that it was considered the perfect vehicle to transition from the hit network show ER to the big screen. A kick-ass heroine! A truly impressive trailer! Based on a beloved -- if deeply flawed -- animated classic! What could go wrong? That's the mission the Addington siblings take on as they delve into the fight sequences, the gender politics, and the various controversies surrounding Niki Caro's $200 million action adventure. How many opportunities were missed? Who is to blame? And why can't we give Donnie Yen the role he so richly deserves? Plus, the most out-of-left-field game we've ever had!

Finally, 2020 is coming to an end. This year has brought a lot of bad things and one of the most painful has been the impact on the movie industry. December is usually reserved for Through the Cracks, that is movies that Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) missed seeing during the year. Despite theatrical releases being basically non-existent, Jonathan and Corey still found four movies to fill out the month. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 2: Mulan (2020) Mulan came out the same day as I’m Thinking of Ending Things, but Disney+ required an additional $30 plus the subscription fee for people to see it. Considering Corey and Jonathan have no attachment to the original animated feature, they decided to wait to see it. Now it is just included with Disney+ so it is a perfect fit for the theme. Directed by Niki Caro and starring Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, and Li Gong, Mulan’s plot summary reads “A young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

The end of 2020 is here, so Not A Bomb Podcast is looking back at this unprecedented year in film and examining the biggest bombs of the year. First up is Disney’s Mulan, starring friend of the podcast - Donnie Yen. Based on the “Ballad of Mulan” and the beloved 1998 animated film of the same name, Mulan didn’t get a US theatrical release due to COVID-19. The film was finally released in the United States on Disney+ for an additionally $29.99 fee (Chinese audiences got to experience the film in the theaters). The controversies don’t stop there. The film was criticized for it’s cultural appropriation, historical inaccuracies, filming in a controversial part of China, lack of representation behind the camera, and the lead actors support for police brutality. Troy and Brad examine all the controversies, as well as the inevitable comparisons to the 1998 film, and ultimately decide if this Disney spectacle is a ‘bomb”. Yep, two grown men with daughters spend over two hours talking about a Disney movie - pack a lunch, it’s a long episode!Mulan is directed by Niki Caro, and stars Yifei Lui, Donnie Yen, Tzi M, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li.If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com.
