So much for the dog days of summer... It's mid August. Congress is on recess and much of the nation is on vacation. Some are in Iowa... well, the 2024 presidential hopefuls are, including Floriduh Man Ron DeSantis who doesn't appear to be having much fun.But if you've listened to this program over the past four years, you would have been expecting something like this.Steve Bousquet, Opinion Editor of the South Florida Sun Sentinel had a devastating column in the Sunday paper about the would be dictator from FloriDUH. He'll join me for a discussion about the DeSantis DeLusion... (He never showed up, but I did read the column... Oh well, live radio...)But first, Georgia is on our minds as we await word from Fulton County that new indictments (the fourth for anyone counting) for the former guy have been handed down. We were expecting it to happen on Thursday, but someone got an itchy posting finger, as the Fulton County court website, for a very brief moment today, posted a lengthy list of charges against Twitler, before they hastily took it down.

Guess what? I'm on a 4-week vacation right now, but I didn't want to leave you without regular content. I've chosen to fill these slots with some of our best interviews with business owners who have taken 4-week vacations. I want to inspire you with what's possible for YOU! Today's episode is an interview from 2018 with Steve Bousquet, and we spoke the day after he returned from a 4-week vacation. I hope that, in the midst of the challenges and pain of entrepreneurship, you are inspired to make the 4 Week Vacation Pledge®️. I want you to be the next business owner that we support and celebrate in taking a 4-week vacation. You deserve it! Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production Production. Show Highlights: Dr. Sabrina is writing a book, The 4 Week Vacation®️, documenting what happens in a business from the moment that a business owner commits to taking a 4-Week Vacation until the time they take it. She will go deeper into what's involved in a later episode. You can download Dr. Sabrina's 4-Week Vacation Jumpstart Guide right now. Go to www.drsabrinastarling.com/jumpstart. Steve talks about the 4 Week Vacations he's taken before, the first of which was not a “vacation” but rather an extended absence following an injury. Steve discusses what his business was like back when he had to take an unplanned six weeks off work in 2014. The preparations and plans that Steven made, and why he made them, before taking his unplanned six-week vacation. How Steve's business grew 6% without him being around. Steve is still working on getting out of the way. The way that Steve implemented Pumpkin Plan and Profit First. The difference that having things clearly defined and money properly managed made to Steve's business. This time around, Steve took his 4 Week Vacation after growing the company by acquiring another business. Successfully doubling the business and integrating new team members smoothly at the same time. Steve's secret to keeping his staff for a really long time. Traveling to ten different businesses across southern America to get a different perspective and to get out of the way of his people's talents. The benefits of taking time off from your business. How to start getting out of your own way in your business. Bringing in new people to train for unique roles and key functions and working through the pushbacks. The things that became really clear to Steve after taking four weeks off. The struggles that come with running a small business. Always keep your eye on your mission. The importance of understanding the numbers. Hitting profit targets every year by implementing processes. Steven got really serious about watching his numbers in 2012 by using only three books- Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profit by Greg Crabtree, Accounting For The Numberphobic by Dawn Fotopulos, and Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. Tripling his company profit since the 2008 recession due to understanding the numbers. Joining me this week is Steve Bousquet.Steve is the President of American Landscape and Lawn Science, a lawn care and landscape business based in Connecticut. Reading that, many of you are probably thinking, "That's an interesting guest for a podcast about Learning Culture". I had the same thought when I first met Steve, a self professed learning nerd who never hesitates to hire a coach or to get a certification in something that he thinks could help him in what he sets out to do.In this episode, we unpack important lessons about the learner path mindset that Steve has installed for his team of 30 people. It covers communication styles, leveraging strengths, the growth mindset, and of course, purpose. Steve shares some very practical tools that you could use to enhance these four areas of your business to promote and enable your people. Sometimes you have to look at a business entirely different from your own, to learn a new approach that resonates and can be applied to the situation you face. I left my conversation with Steve energized by his fresh perspective, and with a new set of practical ideas that I want to apply at Curious Lion. I have no doubt that you will find gems of your own hidden within this conversation. So please sit back and enjoy this episode with Steve Bousquet.
("Before I Let Go" as sung by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly starts playing in the background) Are you ready for the Overlap Podcast Family Reunion? Got the matching reunion t-shirt? How you want your burger cooked? You know you need to stay away from Great Aunt Deb's potato salad with the raisins in it, right? It's reunion week here with our boys Sid and Keith as they sit down and shoot off with Sponsor and Friend of the Show Steve Bousquet, landscape legend and lawn scientist supreme, who is back for his second time around on the show (on his tenth show, he gets a free drink with purchase of an entree ... value-added content here at Overlap). While Steve may be the Lord Mayor of Landscaping, the advice and business acumen he provides in this week's show is evergreen and good for any climate across our globe. Steve's journey is one that many of us have faced in our own business careers - you can be an expert in your field and know how to do what you do really well, but if you don't know the business side of business, you're in for a world of trouble. And Steve's journey has all of the dizzying highs of success, terrifying lows like tremendous debt and a delightful ending that you know we aren't going to talk about here because #TeamNoSpoilers since ... whatever year Sid and Keith started doing this podcast. 2021? 2020? 1947? (Shrugs) Turn on, tune in and take notes - this week's episode is better than Great Aunt Tootsie's homemade pound cake at this fictional reunion we're still apparently in? Enjoy the episode and y'all come do the Electric Slide until that DJ up there finally starts taking requests and we can get some Bell Biv DeVoe going up in here... Cue EGOT Winner Marvin Hamlisch plunking away slowly in C Major at a piano, even though Babs wanted the song in a minor key. Nobody puts Hamlisch in a minor third.) "Memories... light the corners of my mind. Misty, watercolor memories... of the way... we were..." No, we're not talking to Barbra this week. Sorry to disappoint. But, now that you've already been floored by the lack of Streisand, have "No More Tears" and rejoice in the meaning behind the weird symbolism attempted above - we have to admit we're "Guilty" as we've got a clip show this week, you lucky "People." (How many Streisand songs can we reference here? You don't want to take the under on that bet, friendo.) This week, we "Send in the Clowns," our boys Sid and Keith, as we do a deep dive back to Episodes 6 through 10 and grab the best gobbets of wisdom from them because ... let's be real, the helpful hints found therein are "Evergreen." Our boys begin with looking back at their chat in Episode 6 with Justin Koen on how best to get buy-in from your employees. Given the Era of Economic Uncertainty we currently find ourselves in, that could be wonderful wisdom to have if you don't want your current, great employees to just be a "Memory." Episode 7, our boys wax poetic and ask themselves "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life," dropping knowledge bombs about how to create the life you want. Since we're #TeamNo Spoilers, you'll have to actually listen to get these fun facts or you'll be "Left in the Dark." Episode 8, it's our old friend Mike Michalowicz and the Pumpkin Plan, where you go from "Just Leave Everything to Me" mode and learn how to take a business from the launch phase to soaring way up there in "A Piece of Sky." Don't get caught in the cycle of "Sell It, Do It, Sell It, Do It" (That's not a Streisand song - just a quote from the episode. Bet it would be a bop, though) - listen and learn how to make your business "The Best Thing You've Ever Done." Episode 9, we get to talk to a mentor of Sid's, Steve Bousquet, and gab about how "Being Good Isn't Good Enough" - you have to be open, honest and real with your employees or you'll be watching them go, quietly saying to yourself "I Won't Last a Day Without You." And, finally, Episode 10 - Are you still with us? "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" (You knew Yentl was coming) ... it's "The Second Time Around" for more awesome approaches for actualizing employee buy-in. Again, no more clues here, but trust us when we say the tips and tricks we've got here ain't no "Second Hand Rose." We know some of you may not love a clip show, but we say "Don't Rain On My Parade" because "Happy Days Are Here Again." So, "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and enjoy this week's entertaining episode. (20, for those of you who don't want to count them up. But, "Don't Lie To Me," was it a bit much? ... 21.) On today’s show, Dr. Sabrina sits down with Linda Stapf, CPA and Financial Advisor with Stapf Financial Services. Linda is a Breakthroughs on the Bayou Retreat alumna. She has been to several of the Breakthroughs on the Bayou 4 Week Vacation™Retreats. She was very inspired by the activity that the participants did with Sir Steven Wilkinson for their VIP day. As they played “Gator Tank”, Linda observed different business owners getting very excited all of a sudden over the possibility of selling their businesses. Right now, Linda Stapf has set aside tax returns to get curious about business owners who are putting off retirement. She is surveying business owners to get some answers and sharing the story of the extra million dollars. Listen in to this conversation and get ready for some powerful thought-provoking information. You’ll very likely come away with some much bigger ideas for yourself concerning your future. Show Highlights: Linda has been studying her top clients, who are small business owners. What she has noticed is many of them want to sell their businesses within five years. Linda has also noticed that every year, the five-year target resets. Dr. Sabrina provides context about the 2020 Breakthroughs on the Bayou 4 Week Vacation™ Retreat, where Linda saw some business owners getting excited as they were thinking about what they would do with their time after their business sold. Linda shares her observations regarding the game participants, and how it has had a profound effect on what she brings to her own clients. Take one day out of your month, look at your results, and figure out if you would buy your business the way it stood right now. If not, what would you fix about it? Over the course of 10 years and working with 3 clients, she was able to help them save $600,000. They’ve been able to push money into retirement accounts, and there’s an extra million dollars that each one of those business owners now has. The importance of utilizing Profit First principles. Dr. Sabrina discusses the Survival Trap Image and how we can align our actions on an ongoing basis to be a direct path towards our vision. When thinking of your retirement, if you can’t see yourself going to work every day, what do you do with your time? A 4 Week Vacation™ gives you space to explore this. Linda was surprised to find that less than 20 percent of the client base that she has been serving since 1996 was business owners. Answer Linda’s Done in Five Years survey and she’ll send you her story about business survival and the extra million dollars! Linda hopes to understand what is holding business owners back from investing and setting themselves up for a financially secure future. There’s a danger to those who think that their business is their retirement. Take the time to think about who will run your business for you if you don’t have the right systems put in place. When you have your systems in place, you will be able to leave for a 4 Week Vacation™ or for family emergencies with peace of mind. Host Robin Sussingham talks to political reporter Janelle Irwin of Florida Politics; and columnist Steve Bousquet of the Orlando Sentinel and South Florida Sun Sentinel.
