Played lacrosse at Penn State. Obsessed over Counter-Strike. Accidentally turned a Puerto Rico casino trip into an $8k “beer money” bankroll. By senior year of college? $150k in his poker account. Six months later? Nearly dusted it. Then hit for $60k at PCA and never looked back. John has lived the full poker arc: Black Friday moves to Toronto, huge scores in Europe (including tilting Luke Schwartz in Prague), New York DJ lifestyle, Bay Area private games… and now? He's running A5 Labs, a 200-person tech team building AI that hunts bots and collusion across online poker. This episode is funny, wild, and brutally honest. It's about how obsession becomes opportunity, how every poker player eventually faces the “what's next” moment, and how John turned his into a career shaping the entire industry. What do poker and recruiting have in common? More than you'd think—just ask Joe Sebok. In this episode, we dive into the fascinating journey of a former pro poker player who turned his ability to read people at the table into a powerhouse career in tech recruiting. From bluffing his way to millions to building teams for some of the most ambitious startups, Joe brings a fresh—and surprisingly transferable—perspective on decision-making, risk, and intuition. After walking away from a high-stakes poker career in 2010, Joe faced what he calls his biggest gamble yet: starting over. But the same instincts that helped him calculate odds and call bluffs now help him identify the right candidates, predict cultural fit, and make hiring decisions with long-term impact. In this conversation, he breaks down how poker psychology maps perfectly onto the hiring process—and why casinos might actually show more loyalty than startups. We also dig into the deeper life lessons Joe's learned from both tables—the felt and the boardroom. He shares the exact moment he knew it was time to fold his poker career, his top strategies for job seekers looking to take control of their path, and the one trait that trumps skills in startup hiring (you might be surprised). Whether you're navigating your own career pivot or just love a good underdog story, this episode delivers insight, motivation, and a healthy dose of real talk.---------------Update your Resume & LinkedIn Profile:Schedule a 15-minute call with Mary: https://calendly.com/resumeassassin/meet1:1 with Mary: www.resumeassassin.comAI-Enhanced: www.resumesidekick.io---------------Connect with Mary: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mary-southern/Connect with Joe: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joesebok/

Dr. Jaclynn Moskow is a trained physician scientist, writer, healthcare business consultant, and well known professional poker player. The medical industrial complex, much like a high-stakes poker game, operates on a grand scale where the players are institutions, corporations, and policy makers, but the chips are human lives and well-being. Just as a skilled poker player might exploit less experienced opponents, we're seeing a system that prioritizes profit over patient care. The 'house' - in this case, big pharma, insurance companies, and certain healthcare conglomerates - seems to hold all the cards, making rules that benefit their bottom line rather than public health. On todays episode we learn more about medical school training, how a physician is trained to think, what happens when the doctor becomes the patient, what does it mean to overcome mental health or health problems, psychedelics and what poker can teach us about life. Chris Sparks is a one-of-a-kind human; he's a retired professional poker pro who was once ranked one of the top 20 players in the world. But in recent years, he has applied himself to coaching and running workshops on decision-making, systems thinking, and peak performance. And as you'll hear in this conversation, he is not only brilliant but also wise. Before we hit record, I said to Chris let's record a masterclass in mindset for staying calm and making good decisions in high-stress environments ~ and he didn't really disappoint. Our conversation ranged from talking about tools he used to stay calm or shift his state during high-stakes poker games and how he eliminated mental distractions in critical moments. He shared some meta-principles that he learnt through poker but applies to life more broadly—as well as how his approach and philosophy around productivity have shifted over the years.I deeply enjoyed this conversation with Chris, and I have a sense that you will too. I'll also mention that Chris has what he calls a 'performance assessment', which I've linked in the show notes ~ that provides a series of excellent questions to reflect on.
