This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief takes a ride to Northern, Virginia to visit Rebecca Harris from Catoctin Creek Distilling Company. Becky takes the big man through the history of Catoctin Creek and their Virginia Rye Whiskies. After years of being a chemical engineer she, along with her husband, started this craft distillery in Purcellville, Virginia. Their passion is rye whiskey done their way. All her products begin with the finest local and organic grains to create the cleanest spirit possible. At the heart of the distillery is a pair of pot stills, where Becky insists on cooking the distillate for a full nine hours, more than twice as long as most other distilleries, to create the unique and award-winning flavors in her distillate. They start the show with the Roundstone Rye Distiller's Edition. Only one in every ten barrels gets selected to be in the Roundstone Rye "92 Proof" whisky. This 100% rye mash-bill is something special. They then move on to the cask proof version of our ever-popular Roundstone Rye. Released at approximately 58% ABV (it varies depending on the individual barrels), this is seriously strong whisky! Delicious, dark, complex and ridiculously smooth for the proof To start the second half Becky and Big Chief sip on Rabble Rouser Bottled in Bond Rye Whiskey. "Where Roundstone Rye is sort of restrained and elegant," says Scott Harris, founder of the distillery, "Rabble Rouser is more unruly and vivacious.". To finish the show Becky treats the big man Catoctin Creek Hot Honey Rye. Just as you're savoring the whisky, the peppers come in with a surprising and delightful bit of heat. Smooth and sweet, with a ZING! This is a fun one! This ride on The Whiskey Trip shows Big Chief isn't afraid to make a correction from previous shows. Cheers!

Cheers, Scott and Jake Bourbon Lens About Catoctin Creek®: Catoctin Creek® was founded by Becky and Scott Harris in 2009 as the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since before Prohibition. We are located in Purcellville, Virginia, in the heart of the Loudoun Valley. Virginia is the birthplace of American whiskey, and at Catoctin Creek, we faithfully dedicate ourselves to that tradition, producing Virginia's most awarded whisky: Roundstone Rye! The name "Catoctin" is a regional name. Pronounced Ka-TOCK-tin, the name derives from the Indian tribal name "Kittocton" which, legend has it, meant "place of many deer". Catoctin describes a range of mountains and the eponymous creek which flows picturesquely past the distillery and into the Potomac River and Chesapeake Watershed. At Catoctin Creek, we believe in high quality food and spirits. We source our grain and fruit from local sources, free of pesticides and chemical additives that would come through in the spirits we produce. The results are the finest, cleanest spirits possible, with the greatest attention to detail in every single bottle we produce. Catoctin Creek has received numerous international gold medals and has been featured in many national publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Wine Enthusiast, and Whisky Advocate. The Daily Beast, Forbes, and Men's Journal have highlighted the distillery as an example of great American craft distilleries making whisky from scratch. ABOUT BECKY HARRIS, CHIEF DISTILLER Becky graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. As a chemical engineer, she specialized in industrial processes and production systems. Becky brought this knowledge and applied it to something she loved–making the finest distilled spirits in Virginia. All her products begin with the finest local and organic grains and fruit to create the cleanest spirit possible. At the heart of the distillery is a pair of pot stills, where Becky insists on cooking the distillate for a full nine hours, more than twice as long as most other distilleries, to create the unique and award-winning flavors in her distillate. Becky has been featured in Food and Wine as one of “6 Women in Whiskey to Watch,” and serves as President of the American Craft Spirits Association, the trade association for craft distilleries. ABOUT SCOTT HARRIS, GENERAL MANAGER Scott graduated with honors and two degrees from Georgia Tech. He spent the last twenty years building a software career in telecommunication systems and government IT solutions and traded it all in for the chance to own and run his own distillery. As he likes to say, "Twenty years of government contracting taught me a great love of whisky!" In 2011, Scott was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce, and in both 2012 and 2020, Catoctin Creek Distillery was awarded Small Business of the Year. Scott currently sits on the Craft Distiller Advisory Board for DISCUS, and is an emeritus member of the board of directors for the Virginia Distillers Association. He was also appointed to the Virginia Spirits Board by the governor of Virginia, overseeing the marketing of Virginia spirits. Scott has been a tireless advocate for craft spirits both in the Commonwealth of Virginia, nationally and internationally. Scott and Becky are happy to be doing something together that they love: Producing the finest spirits in Virginia, completely and truly by hand. At Catoctin Creek, Virginia Rye Whisky is our passion.

This episode features Becky Harris of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company . Becky and Scott founded Catoctin Creek in 2009. At the time there were about 200 distilleries in the United Sates and 6 in Virginia. They began with a vision of making rye whiskey which was "the whiskey" up until prohibition in the Mid-Atlantic States. At Cotoctin they use batch pot still distillation. This is the key to deriving the most flavor from the rye grain. In the beginning it was difficult to get farmers to take a chance on this little craft distillery. Today those farmers are glad that they did. Catoctin produces some of the finest rye whiskey's. Combine that with the delicious cocktails in the tasting room and you have a recipe for continued growth and success. We talk bucket list spots, locations we've both hit before, the feeling we get when we're in particular places that haven't changed at all over the years and his trips overseas to Italy and London where he hit some of my favorite mashes. Steve Dallman is the guest on Episode 020 of Mission Statements. I needed to speak to him for a couple of reasons. First, because he hits a ton of locations all over the country, and secondly, most of his hits are purposely locations of bad movies. We talk all about terrible films and what he does in order for him to be able to travel as often as he does. Definitely a fun conversation. Enjoy. Stay Gold. My guest on Episode 019 is a resident at the infamous Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles on skid row as well as an urban explorer, Greg Samsa. There was new found attention to the Cecil after Netflix aired their limited series, "Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel", which focused on the disappearance of Elisa Lam. If you don't already know, one of the founders of the Delta Bravo Team, Knocko, was interviewed for the documentary. Once Greg moved i to the Cecil, almost every day he posts insane things that constantly happen there. So I figured I'd ask him to talk about it. From "The Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez to the Black Dahlia and constant chaos from residents and mentally ill. Strap in and enjoy. Happy New Year! Episode 018 of the Mission Statements podcast has dropped everywhere with very special guest Darren Dalton. You probably know him as Randy Anderson, the "good" Soc from The Outsiders, or Darrel from Red Dawn or from over 30 other movies and television shows. We discuss (of course) his role as Randy, his friendship with C. Thomas Howell since auditioning for The Outsiders and how the book by S.E. Hinton and the movie are timeless and flip generations. The impact Danny Boy has had with what he has done and continues to do in Tulsa, his novel that he has done, the follow-up novel, being a teacher and everything else in between. "He ain't a Soc, just a guy who wanted to talk." Enjoy and Stay Gold. The owner of Main Street Jukebox and fellow Delta Bravo Urban Exploration Team member Tom LeFevre is my guest on this episode of Mission Statements. Tom opened up his record shop in 1994 and has been going strong since. We discuss hunting down locations and, at times, how much dedication and determination it takes to finally "get the shot." From exploration to realizing what a small world it is with a mutual friend and the group Slightly Stoopid, to road trips and on to everything from House of Pain to hair metal and hardcore. We could have easily gone another two hours, which seems to be the running theme in all of these episodes. Enjoy and support Main Street Jukebox. Stay Gold. They discuss how to be strong-minded, using different perspectives to discover our blind spots, the importance of having people in our corner, and much more.Topics Include: - Jan's early riding career- Our relationship to fear- How self-awareness leads to better choices- Jan's road to recovery - Diversity of cognitive learning- Shared decision-making- How to persevere in the face of adversity- Mentorship- Why you shouldn't be afraid to make mistakes- And more…Jan Byyny is a top-ranked international rider. "Hey Soda, here come the hobos..." Episode 013 of MISSION STATEMENTS: A DBUET Podcast is now available to stream everywhere! My guest is Gary Coulson. Gary has restored and saved the DX Gas Station from "The Outsiders", along with a big part of saving the Rexall Store featured in the deleted scenes (but can be seen in "The Complete Novel" version of the movie). Initially being unfamiliar with the book or the film, he suddenly found himself in the middle of an amazing restoration project which has brought a new life to Sperry, Oklahoma. and he gives all the credit to Danny O'Connor, which without him, none of this would be happening at all. We speak all about the renovations, the future plans and projects in that area that are all currently in the works. This was, as always a very fun conversation. *About half way through, Gary's video feed shuts down for some odd reason then mysteriously pops back up at the end... but the audio throughout is perfect.* Support his non-profit organization "Upward Sperry" here: https://www.facebook.com/payitforwardpirates Friends of the DX Gas Station Sperry, Okla. "What? Don't get, don't get wise... I don't like little kids, I don't like 'em..." Chris & Billy Waggoner are two out of the three "52 Pick-Up Kids" from "The Outsiders". They are the guests on Episode 012 of Mission Statements. One of my all time favorite movies growing up since I first saw it at about five or six years old, then passing it onto my daughter at about the same age, and it being one of her favorites as well. I never thought I'd be having an hour and a half long conversation with these "kids". We talk about how it was filming the movie, being chased by Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio and C. Thomas Howell about fifty times to get the shot right, Chris getting his head shaved and a ton of other banter. Two really good guys who appreciate their small part in the movie and especially the resurgence of it because of what Danny Boy has created in Tulsa with The Outsiders House Museum. I'm looking forward to next summer when I make it back to Tulsa to hang with these two. I hope you enjoy this one! Don't get wise... and Stay Gold. My man Kevin Bednarz is the guest on Episode 011 of Mission Statements. I first met him in June of 2019 at the "All Star Comic Con" in Virginia, an event he put together. A member of the Delta Bravo Team, an owner of three establishments that happen to be sponsors of the show and an incredible artist. We talk locations, conventions and we steer into horror and serial killer stuff. Why are we so interested in things like maniacs and murderers? We speak on his annual "Inktober" art work and this year's charity, the Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation... who benefited from the proceeds this year. I stopped in Purcellville, Virginia towards the end of my road trip in July, ate and chopped it up for a while. We touch on a topic we've been casually throwing around from time to time and hopefully sooner rather than later, myself, Kevin and a couple two, three other people will pull the trigger and make it come to fruition. As always, having a conversation with like-minded people who share the same interests was a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy this one. Respect. Stay Gold. Episode 010 has dropped everywhere. Andrew Katz in another MVP member of the Delta Bravo Team. Between the previous episode and this one, we combined for about five hours of conversation. With that being said, we could easily have gone on for another couple. Besides being a member of the team, he's a painter and an art teacher in Maryland. He's an encyclopedia on the Golden Era of Hip-Hop and it seems he's the "hip-Hop" guy on the team. We go into that, and realize that's not really the case... at all. He has hit numerous spots overseas. He's recently hit spots in London, Paris, Chicago and New York City... all within a month. He breaks down some of his missions on those trips such as the location where the "baseball bat" scene was filmed in "The Untouchables" and the scene where Hannibal Lecter escapes in "The Silence of the Lambs". This was, as always a lot of fun to do. I hope you enjoy. This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott were joined by co-host emeriti Ben Wittes and Shane Harris for a very special anniversary edition of Rational Security that pits their national security hot takes up against each other.Which of the following takes will the team find to be "too hot," which "undercooked," and which "just right"?Americans (and especially progressives) will regret reviving the prospect of disqualifying people under section 3 of the 14th Amendment.Over the next year, there will be a windfall of information regarding unidentified aerial phenomena, including some pointing to possible extraterrestrial origin.A President Ron Desantis won't be as dangerous as President Donald Trump.Russia's terminal decline presents one of the greatest threats to global security.American democracy will be saved by social conservative minorities voting for the Republican Party. For object lessons, Alan endorsed his favorite children's book about affectionate penguins (of many), "I Like it When" by Mary Murphy. Quinta recommended Garret Graff's new eponymous book on Watergate, "Watergate." Scott urged D.C. area residents to visit Wheatland Spring Farm and Brewery on their next trip out to Purcellville, VA, and try their "Land + Waters" farmhouse ale for a true taste of Virginia. Ben thanked Scott for supporting him through his crippling dog shirt addiction, even though that support has now reached its limits. And Shane recommended a non-spy book by "the American LeCarre" Charles McCarry, entitled "The Bride of the Wilderness," as well as the famous used bookstore where he bought it: "The Bookstore" in Lenox, MA. Danny Johnson is one of the MVP's on the Delta Bravo Urban Exploration Team who has hit locations that are spread out all over the country. He completely "gets" what this entire thing that we do is really all about. The personal experiences and feelings some of us get when we set out to find locations to visit. The feeling we get when after researching, doing the leg work, sometimes overcoming obstacles, whether it's personal time, physical objects such as walls, gates and areas in the middle of nowhere with no actual address attached and you find the spot... finally. The mash at the end is just the byproduct of a mission and the commitment to a passion project that leaves an unexplainable feeling that you'll never forget when that particular mission is complete. 1:13 All about Mel Parrish 1:42 Mel Parrish has been a plus-size model for many years and it has been a journey of acceptance and self-love. 2:29 We all come through childhood with gaps, scars, and experiences that have resulted in trauma. 3:10 Parenthood is a chance to reparent ourselves. 4:10 Parenting is a lens so beautifully to heal everything, specifically women's bodies whether they're pregnant or not. 4:56 How do you come to peace with your body? 5:24 There is so much negative programming around size. 5:34 The journey includes what are the helpful thoughts and what are the unhelpful thoughts. 6:38 It's a process of exploration and self-healing. 7:07 It's figuring out self-care and self-harm when it comes to intentional weight loss. 7:17 Your body is your body, it may never look like someone else's body. 9:06 A lot of people project hate and their negative experiences to other people's figures. 10:15 An important component of body positivity is body autonomy. 14:05 What is Mel working on right now? 18:21 The journey to healing your image is to catch yourself what other people are thinking about your body and what other people are thinking about your value as a person. 19:18 Identify those, try to work on those wounds, heal them and get to a place where you want to see yourself in relation to how you want to feel. 19:41 Identify what's going on in your head right now, and how we heal it. 19:56 It's someone else's voice, and it has nothing to do with you. About the Guest: Mel Parrish is a model, influencer, and mother of three girls. She and her husband live in Purcellville, VA with their girls, dog, and chickens.
