Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! This week sees us back for PART 2 of our deep-dive into the symbolic and occult meaning underpinning Philip K. Dick's autobiographical, mostly-still-fiction, futuristic dystopia: A Scanner Darkly. We resume our analysis by first unpacking the symbolic meaning of the insects which haunt the characters from start to finish and what they have to do with the beetle headed god of ancient Egypt. Afterwards we explore the connection Donna has with the divine feminine in both Gnostic and Egyptian mythology, the inside scoop on Substance D, the field of reeds and the inclusion of the Thelemic N.O.X. formulae which also appears in the famous Black Lodge of Twin Peaks. In the extended version of the show we discuss the meaning of the Hawthorne plant, the layers of esoteric symbolism in the film version of Bob's living room using the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, who Barris really is and what it all has to do with popcorn. Substance D is a new drug sweeping the nation and slowly destroying the minds of its users. As the connection between the two halves of their brains degrades, they grow increasingly disoriented and confused before suffering irreversible brain damage. Fred is an undercover narcotics agent working to uncover where the new drug is coming from. But to find the source he has to pose as Bob Arctor, a user, and soon Arctor is as addicted as the junkies around him. Can he see through his psychosis long enough to tell which leads are real and which imagined? Or will he be consumed, like his friends, by substance D?Join the Hugonauts book club on discord!Or you can watch the episode on YouTube if you prefer video
In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia begin a new themed month based on an actor and their movies: Keanu Reeves. They start with the 2006 sci-fi thriller A Scanner Darkly based on the book of the same name by Philip K. Dick. An undercover cop named Bob Archor with the codename "Fred" is investigating the main source and distribution of Substance D, an addicted drug that causes hallucinations. He lives with two drugged housemates named James Barris and Ernie Luckman and later ends up getting drugged and his personality and lifestyle changes drastically. Things get more complicated when his superior codenamed "Hank" assigns him to surveil the same household that he lives in with hidden cameras with their main target being himself. When A Scanner Darkly premiered in theaters, it was a box office bomb making $7.7 million dollars out of a $8.8 million dollar budget. Despite that, it was praised due to the acting and the unique rotoscope animation. It currently is rated 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. What did Arun and Patricia think of this film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly (2006) is a better film than Blade Runner, the adaptation often seen as the gold standard of Philip K. Dick adaptations. Join Dan and Mike for a conversation about the experience of watching this terrific and trippy interrogation of the surveillance state, the noise that permeates our lives, and the ways in which our identities are scanned and sold. Other topics include rotoscoping, John LeCarre, Primer, The Departed, and whether or not Woody Harrelson knew he was in a movie at the time of filming. So put down that Substance D, reconnect those hemispheres, and give it a listen! Please subscribe to the show wherever you get your podcasts and follow us on Twitter and Letterboxd @15MinFilm. Hey everybody! Welcome to episode 83 of the Not Joanna Eggs podcast! This week, Robbie and Tracy review the 2006 rotoscoped animated film, A Scanner Darkly. Based on the novel by Philip K Dick, this surreal film follows Bob Arctor, an undercover cop trying to locate the kingpin of a highly addictive drug known as Substance D permeating Anaheim, CA. We examine the semi-autobiographical nature of the story, Woody Harrelson's amazingly silly wig and how in the blue blazes Alex Jones was involved with this movie (yes, gay-frog-conspiracy-theorist turned meme-lord Alex Jones). Also, the exact amount of movie time to skip to make Venom enjoyable! We hope you enjoy this episode and thank you for listening! He is the founder […] The post Episode 7 – James Reich appeared first on Sensitive Skin Magazine.
The Novel Philip K. Dick sort of wrote this about himself and his experiences with the Berkeley drug culture. “Everything in A Scanner Darkly I, actually saw.” This novel is probably the least scifi of Dick’s work. Rotoscroping Other famous examples of rotoscroping, but Linklater’s are the first to do it 100%. Interesting custom software with layering techniques. Perfect for this film with its less than firm grip on reality. Drug Addiction We are squares and we know roughly nothing about drugs. But it sure seems bad. Especially the drug in the movie: Substance D. LSD experiments like the following: Here is the article about these experiments. Big Brother/Corporate Conspiracy Small conspiracies vs grand conspiracies. Big brother. Alex Jones and Linklater. Govt agencies compelling sharing by private firms. The social effects of being watched. The war on drugs. Fractured Indentity Scramble suits. How much can trust our own senses? Occam’s razor.
