Martine Perret is a photographic artist who was born in Paris, and now lives and works from her base in Margaret River. She is known for her startlingly beautiful portrayal of the Western Australian landscape, often employing aerial captures and portraiture to tell important stories of our times. Her approach to artistic work is based on a career in photojournalism, including a decade covering UN peacekeeping missions in conflict zones, in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Timor-Leste and West Africa where she documented the Ebola crisis. Recent projects Ngala Wongga (Come Talk) - Cultural Significance of Languages in the Goldfields and Belong – Language connecting feeling, culture, country exhibition at the WA Museum Boola Bardip, highlight the importance of First Nations' languages. In December 2022 Martine was honoured to travel to Paris with Wardandi Elders Vivian Brockman Webb, Mitchella Hutchins and artist Roly Skender to launch the UNESCO International Decade of Indigenous Languages with the presentation of the collaborative audio-visual work Wannang Biridge (Light of the Peppermint Tree), which was originally created at The Farm Margaret River, following a residency with SymbioticA on photomicrography at CELLCentral in the school of Anatomy and Human Biology at The University of Western Australia. Martine shares her journey from her beginnings in Paris and Bordeaux, through her extensive travels with the UN, to settling in Sydney and eventually Western Australia. We talk about the crucial role of photography in society, the impact of digital evolution on the field, and the personal philosophies that guide Martine's work. Martine provides insights into her creative process, the importance of following one's intuition in photography, and the balancing act between professional pursuits and personal commitments. A Symbiotic Relationship Welcome to another episode of Cedarville Stories, where we explore the unique initiatives and stories that make Cedarville University stand out. Today, we dive into the inspiring collaboration between two seasoned professors, Dr. Ruth Sylvester and Dr. Lori Ferguson. Dr. Sylvester, originally from sunny southern Florida, and Dr. Ferguson, from nearby Xenia, Ohio, both brought rich teaching backgrounds to Cedarville University. Despite their distinct paths, they've forged a powerful partnership with a shared mission. In this episode, we unravel the story behind "Symbiotica," a groundbreaking plan and curriculum crafted by Dr. Sylvester and Dr. Ferguson. Symbiotica is more than an academic venture; it's a dynamic approach to preparing the next generation of educators at Cedarville. Focused on the unique realm of homeschool education, Symbiotica aims to equip early childhood education majors with real-world experiences. Simultaneously, it provides homeschooled students with a classroom experience infused with biblical teachings, extending beyond the confines of their homes. Join us as we explore the inception, goals, and potential impact of Symbiotica. Less than a year old, this innovative program already holds promise to serve as a national model for colleges and universities seeking to blend academic rigor with practical, biblical, and real-world applications. For Dr. Sylvester and Dr. Ferguson, Symbiotica embodies a win-win scenario, creating a symbiotic relationship among themselves that benefits students, educators, and the future of education. https://share.transistor.fm/s/46014863
In many cultures, ritual ceremonies transmit knowledge about human relationships with the natural world through socially and spiritually important communal experiences. In the context of climate crisis, artists are developing new rituals to contribute to the development of more reciprocal and respectful ecological relationships. We spoke with three fascinating artists about the rituals they've developed.Freyja Sewell (ig @freyjasewell) has adapted her product design and furniture making skills to the development of an immersive biophilic ceremony. Ioana Man (ig @ioana_man) is working with metagenomics to visualise the urban microbiome and propose infrastructure for microbial and human health alike. As part of her PhD at SymbioticA at the University of Western Australia, WhiteFeather Hunter (ig @whitefeather.hunter) is growing cultured meat from her own menstrual blood, bringing symbols and practices from witchcraft into the molecular biology lab. "We said it would be really nice if the first tissue-engineered sculptures to be presented within a cultural context would be a something like a worry doll because it would express our anxieties and worries and the fact that it's not that simple." Hidden away in the School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology at the University of Western Australia, is SymbioticA. It's a place where art is created - using living materials and scientific techniques - to make us think about what is happening in the world of biotechnology. Make no mistake, it IS as unique and unusual as it sounds. It's founders, Oron Catts and Dr Ionat Zurr are celebrated around the world for their pioneering works, including making the first piece of in-vitro meat and the victimless leather jacket which had to "die" spectacularly in the Museum of Modern Art on New York where it made it's debut.
Hva er biokunst? Og hvordan kan kunstnere og næringslivet samarbeide mer? I dagens podkastepisode møter du leder for i/o/lab, Senter for Framtidskunst, Hege Tapio. For mer innhold, sjekk ut våre hjemmesider: https://www.obforum.no See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In Pt. 2 Sandra and Allegra share about their time with Lanny Cordola and how they ultimately came to have their own solo albums. – In Frontline Records Rewind Episode 69, executive producer, Adel Meisenheimer, continues her conversation with Sandra Stephens and Allegra Parks. These ladies sang background vocals for Jon Gibson, Scott Blackwell, Lanny Cordola and other Frontline artists. Though it has been about 25 years since they wrote, recorded and toured hit songs, they still recall them and treat listeners with acappella intros and even a new Rewind intro. The episode focuses on Sandra’s participation with Lanny Cordola in various projects he produced for Frontline Records –and we do mean “Variousâ€! Sandra’s deep appreciation and gratitude for this eclectic artist/producer is rooted in lessons communicated that “This is who you are, and this is who you can be musically.†In the 1990’s and even to this day, when Lanny asks Sandra to write or sing on a project, she doesn’t hesitate to show up. The show takes us from Reggae Worship II, to Blues For The Child to a far-out trans music album, Symbiotica, where listeners can learn to recognize Sandra’s soulfully low, modern R&B, jazz-influenced, pitch-perfect voice. Sandra released her first solo album titled He Can and it is a must-have CD! Listeners get a little taste of it. Allegra also released a solo album in 2014 titled Just To Praise and Worship You, and a track from this exciting Gospel-flavored project closes the show.

This second part features music from Chaos Is The Poetry, Magdallan, and albums from Lanny’s solo project: Symbiotica, Salvation Medicine Show, and Shades Of Blue. – In Frontline Rewind Episode 53 host Les Carlsen continues his in-depth conversation with accomplished guitarist and singer/songwriter, Lanny Cordola and Gary Thomas Griffin (of The Beach Boys fame) at Gary’s infamous recording studio in Los Angeles. This is a place where Lanny is right at home, as most of his Frontline Records albums were recorded there, like those covered in the show: Chaos Is The Poetry, Symbiotica, The Dirt (Magdalen), Salvation Medicine Show and Shades of Blue. Lanny indulges the listener with stories and influences that inspired songs. He reveals which one is about his Grandmother, how characters he meets spark songs like DzStreet Of No Hopedz, and how a rap contribution by Solo of Gospel Gangstaz transpired on DzThe Longest Day in Mrs. Evers’ Lifedz. Gary shares about how Frontline Records provided the two creators a small budget and lots of creative freedom to produce unique projects. For those in Southern California, Lanny is preparing a real music feast he calls Peace Jam. Many of his musical friends, including John Stamos (Jesse and the Rippers from Full House), will be jamming in support of funds being raised to assist kids living in war zones and poverty stricken areas. “It’s now a reality”, Jens Hauser announced at the 2003 Biotech Art exhibition, “artists are in the labs. They are intentionally transgressing procedures of representation and metaphor, going beyond them to manipulate life itself. Biotechnology is no longer just a topic, but a tool, generally generating green fluorescent animals, wings for pigs and sculpture moulded in bioreactors or under the microscope, and using DNA itself as an artistic medium.” To challenge the validity of singular and fixed species at this “evolutionary crossroad” of genetically engineered mammals and organ transpeciation, Transgenic artists have intervened into biogenetic technology in roles first imagined by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Through the microinjection of DNA with cells containing green fluorescent protein into a rabbit zygote, Eduardo Kac was able to genetically engineer GFK Bunny. Using living tissues, Zurr and Catts created ‘partial life sculptures’ at SymbioticA including frog-steaks and even flying pigs. In their collaboration with Stelarc, SymbioticA has also grown a 1Ž4 scale replica of his ear made out of human cartilage cells, implanted upon Stelarc’s arm in 2010. Following the launch of The Humane Genome Project, Patricia Piccinini chose silicon, acrylic and fibreglass, rather than human and non-human tissue to produce The Mutant Genome Project (TMGP) and Lifeforms with Unevolved Mutant Properties (LUMP) – genetically mutant babies engineered to look like pink-skinned tumours or, in her words, “a cute grotesquery”. As controversies raged over organ xenotransplantation and interspecies breeding, Piccinini created a human sow suckling a litter of 'pigren'. This year she produced a controversial skywhale, part-human, part-whale, able to take flight. As Kac explains, “Transgenic Art is, a new artistic terrain and art form based on the use of genetic engineering to transfer natural or synthetic genes to an organism – to create unique living beings.” Yet this can only be done, he stresses, “with great care … and above all, with a commitment to respect, nurture and love of the life thus created.” By focusing upon the bioethics of transhumanist genetics in relation to this Transgenic Art, this lecture will examine how these artists also engage in the nurturance and reciprocity of transgenetic and transpecies creations, rarely addressed in genetic biotechnologies, to consider how they are not rejected, unlike Dr. Frankenstein's "modern prometheus" but are incorporated into our posthuman evolutionary era. Fae (Fay) Brauer is Professor of Art and Visual Culture at the University of East London Art and Digital Industries. She is also Associate Professor in Art History and Cultural Theory at The University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts. Oron Catts is the director of SymbioticA at the University of Western Australia. SymbtioticA is laboratory that is “dedicated to the research, learning, critique and hands on engagement with the life sciences.” Catts is also co founder of The Tissue Culture & Arts Project (TC&A). In this podcast the interviewer Bridgette Mongeon and Oron Catts discuss the artwork Victimless Leather, Living tissue that is grown in a laboratory that resembles skin. This is a very charged topic. Introduction to the art and SymbioticA may cause some to gasp.
