In this episode Susan Lambert is joined by Hugh Catts, Ph.D., professor at Florida State University, to break down what comprehension is and bust some myths around what it isn't. With a family history of dyslexia, he has a personal connection to the topic that led him into research in language sciences and language disorders. He discusses how his findings moved him away from viewing comprehension as simply a “component of reading” but rather something entirely separate—a condition created over time, defined by purpose, and influenced by prior knowledge. Together, Susan and Hugh address many comprehension-related contexts, such as the simple view of reading, the five pillars of reading, and comprehension's relationship to knowledge building. Hugh also gives listeners practical advice for helping students suss out their comprehension before reading, and he clarifies why understanding the standard of coherence is important.Show notes:Submit your literacy questions for a chance to win!Read: Rethinking How to Promote Reading Comprehension by Hugh CattsRead: The Simple View of Reading: Advancements and False Impressions by Hugh CattsFollow Hugh on X: @CattsHughQuotes: “If I was going to define comprehension, it's not a single thing. I mean, that's the problem. We want it to be a single thing, but it depends upon what you're reading and why you're reading it.” –Hugh Catts, Ph.D.“What comprehension is is the interaction of what you bring into that reading situation and what you already know about it and your motivation and purpose to comprehend it.” –Hugh Catts, Ph.D.“There's just not enough mental reserve to be able to build that meaning that quickly. So it helps tremendously that you have some knowledge about it beforehand. That knowledge gives you a place to put information. So when you read about something, it gives you storage for the information. SummaryIn this episode, the hosts discuss the RAND Model, a heuristic for thinking about reading comprehension. The model was developed in the late 1990s by the RAND Corporation in response to a need for more research on comprehension. The model considers three main components: the reader, the text, and the purpose or activity of reading. It emphasizes the active role of the reader in constructing meaning from the text and highlights the importance of text complexity, coherence, genre, and the context in which reading takes place. The hosts also explore the challenges of measuring reading comprehension and suggest a curriculum-based assessment approach.TakeawaysThe RAND Model is a heuristic for thinking about reading comprehension that considers the reader, the text, and the purpose or activity of reading.Text complexity, coherence, genre, and the context in which reading takes place are important factors in comprehension.Measuring reading comprehension with standardized tests can be challenging due to the complexity of the construct.A curriculum-based assessment approach that measures comprehension within specific disciplines may provide a more accurate and fair assessment of reading ability.ResourcesEp. 177: The Five Pillars of Reading with Hugh CattsEp. 178: The Simple View and Scarborough's Reading Rope with Researcher Hugh Catts Five Pillars of Reading with Hugh Catts Follow researcher Hugh Catts on Twitter (or X)A Heuristic for Thinking About Reading Comprehension, or the RAND Model ICYMI: Ep. 118: Rethinking Reading Comprehension with Researcher Hugh CattsConnect with us Facebook and join our Facebook Group Twitter Instagram Don't miss an episode! The Simple View of Reading highlights the importance of word recognition and language comprehension in reading comprehension. It emphasizes that if a child struggles in one area, it will affect their overall reading comprehension. Scarborough's Reading Rope provides a more detailed breakdown of the components involved in reading, including background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, strategies, and literacy knowledge. This study tests whether large-scale structural reorganization in schizophrenia relates to normative network architecture, in particular regional centrality/hubness and connectivity patterns. We examine network effects in schizophrenia across different disease stages, and transdiagnostically explore consistency of such relationships in patients with bipolar and major depressive disorder. Methods: We studied anatomical MRI scans from 2,439 adults with schizophrenia and 2,867 healthy controls from 26 ENIGMA sites. Case-control patterns of structural alterations were evaluated against two network susceptibility models: 1) hub vulnerability, which examines associations between regional network centrality and magnitude of disease-related alterations; 2) epicenter models, which identify regions whose typical connectivity profile most closely resembles the disease-related morphological alteration patterns. Both susceptibility models were tested across schizophrenia disease stages and compared to meta-analytic bipolar and major depressive disorder case-control maps. Results: In schizophrenia, regional gray matter reductions co-localized with interconnected hubs, in both the functional (r=0.58, pspin less than 0.0001) and structural connectome (r=0.32, pspin=0.01). Epicenters were identified in temporo-paralimbic regions, extending to frontal areas. We found unique epicenters for first-episode and early stages, and a shift from occipital to temporal-frontal epicenters in chronic stages. Transdiagnostic comparisons revealed shared epicenters in schizophrenia and bipolar, but not major depressive disorders. Conclusions: Cortical reorganization over the course of schizophrenia closely reflects brain network architecture, emphasizing marked hub susceptibility and temporo-frontal epicenters. The observed overlapping epicenters for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder furthermore suggest shared pathophysiological processes within the schizophrenia-bipolar-spectrum. Literacy, a fundamental human right, is foundational for a child’s potential toward academic and lifelong success. For children with language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia, mastering skilled reading can feel like an impossible endeavor without necessary support and teaching using proven instructional methods. Fortunately, there are powerful research-based antidotes toward potentially preventing a destiny of reading failure. In this episode, Hugh Catts, PhD explains why early screening and proven, effective reading intervention are critical to mitigating reading disabilities in children. He outlines the research supporting the current model, developed with Yaacov Petscher, PhD, which examines the factors that increase the probability of developing dyslexia. Being able to identify these factors is important to better understand how to effectively screen and provide more comprehensive support for all students, offering implications for research, policy, and education.Bookmarks and Resources:Do you want to learn more from this episode? In an era when Florida and the south was dominated by one party and African-Americans had been disenfranchised, Sidney J. Catts came to power. His Governorship was lamentable era for the state as he publicly advocated racism towards African-Americans while fueling paranoia about Catholics and the possibility of a Papal takeover of Florida.

Margo Catts’ new novel Among the Lesser Gods (Arcade Publishing, 2017) opens in 1978, as Elena Alvarez, a newly minuted physics graduate living in LA, discovers she’s pregnant.  She considers it to be just one more mistake in a lifetime of screw-ups.  Her mother abandoned her after she accidentally set a deadly fire as a child, and she was raised by her cold distant father. She felt loved only when visiting her grandmother, who divides her time between the town of Leadville, Colorado, and a rustic mountain cabin in an old abandoned mining town.  When her grandmother writes to ask Elena to come and babysit for two children whose mother is “gone,” Elena accepts with hopes that she can put off making any real decisions about her future. Through her grandmother’s stories, Elena starts to understand her father’s remoteness, and as the children she babysits become more attached to her, she starts to understand herself.  “It seems a person is never finished learning about sorrow…”  Elena’s internal conflicts, metaphysical musings, and reflections on family and forgiveness are all part of the stunning landscape.  Then the two children go missing, and Elena is forced to confront the guilt that has followed her since childhood. Hidden away in the School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology at the University of Western Australia, is SymbioticA. Artists as Geneticists: Evolution, Transpeciation and Transgenic Art.

“It’s now a reality”, Jens Hauser announced at the 2003 Biotech Art exhibition, “artists are in the labs. They are intentionally transgressing procedures of representation and metaphor, going beyond them to manipulate life itself. Biotechnology is no longer just a topic, but a tool, generally generating green fluorescent animals, wings for pigs and sculpture moulded in bioreactors or under the microscope, and using DNA itself as an artistic medium.” To challenge the validity of singular and fixed species at this “evolutionary crossroad” of genetically engineered mammals and organ transpeciation, Transgenic artists have intervened into biogenetic technology in roles first imagined by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Through the microinjection of DNA with cells containing green fluorescent protein into a rabbit zygote, Eduardo Kac was able to genetically engineer GFK Bunny. Using living tissues, Zurr and Catts created ‘partial life sculptures’ at SymbioticA including frog-steaks and even flying pigs. In their collaboration with Stelarc, SymbioticA has also grown a 1Ž4 scale replica of his ear made out of human cartilage cells, implanted upon Stelarc’s arm in 2010. Following the launch of The Humane Genome Project, Patricia Piccinini chose silicon, acrylic and fibreglass, rather than human and non-human tissue to produce The Mutant Genome Project (TMGP) and Lifeforms with Unevolved Mutant Properties (LUMP) – genetically mutant babies engineered to look like pink-skinned tumours or, in her words, “a cute grotesquery”. As controversies raged over organ xenotransplantation and interspecies breeding, Piccinini created a human sow suckling a litter of 'pigren'. This year she produced a controversial skywhale, part-human, part-whale, able to take flight. As Kac explains, “Transgenic Art is, a new artistic terrain and art form based on the use of genetic engineering to transfer natural or synthetic genes to an organism – to create unique living beings.” Yet this can only be done, he stresses, “with great care … and above all, with a commitment to respect, nurture and love of the life thus created.” By focusing upon the bioethics of transhumanist genetics in relation to this Transgenic Art, this lecture will examine how these artists also engage in the nurturance and reciprocity of transgenetic and transpecies creations, rarely addressed in genetic biotechnologies, to consider how they are not rejected, unlike Dr. Frankenstein's "modern prometheus" but are incorporated into our posthuman evolutionary era.
