LA based photographer Ian Spanier has been on the show a few times, with the first being back in 2019 for a conversation about Classic Portraits & Classic Lighting, discussing a portrait of actor Jeff bridges. Next up was the 2022 show talking about his Favorite Light Setups, which was fitting since Ian is an Ambassador for Westcott as a "Top Pro". In all the years I have been doing this podcast, Ian is absolutely one of my favorite interviews. He's always happy to share any of his techniques or the details of his process. I have even watched his workshop a few times, when he was a guest presenter at Cal Baptist University. Simply put, he is a top level creator, and a fantastic educator. I was emailing back and forth with him recently, and he mentioned he had a new book coming out next year, titled Cigars: A Biography. Keep in mind, Ian already has had three successful books. His first full book of published work, "Playboy, a Guide to Cigars" arrived in cigar shops in November 2009. The book is a collection of his photographs made in six countries, and spanning two and a half years. His second book project was a different subject altogether, and “Local Heroes: America's Volunteer Fire Fighters,” came out to critical acclaim in the Fall of 2012. This year saw the arrival of book three, Arturo Fuente: From 1912 by Assouline books. This one is a two-book series that features all of Ian's images in their $1200 US Retail version as well as the limited edition smaller version packed with 20 exclusive Arturo Fuente cigars retailing for $2500 US. While we're chatting about the newest book, Ian said something that struck me as a great idea for a show. He talked about "how a long term personal project helps one grow as a photographer”. I think that as creatives we all have a different path for growing as an artist, and I feel like I have heard this one often. Personal projects lets us play, and explore not only our subject matter, but our entire approach to the art. I've done shows about personal projects before, and I have always been fascinated by the personal projects I see photographers take on, but this one was different. This personal project is the result of 17 years of Ian's work. As I mentioned above, Ian is an Ambassador for Westcott as a "Top Pro", and he's also a brand ambassador for companies like ThinkTank Photo, Spider Holster, Hoodman USA, Sekonic, Naroo Global Masks, and CamRanger. So, I asked if he'd wanted to come back and talk about how a project like this, spanning so many years, helped him grow as a photographer. #053: Let’s suppose you have a conservation photography project in mind and know exactly what you want to produce. You've done the legwork to figure out the grants you want to go for……but you get stuck when you discover that the granting entity is only going to hand the money over to a nonprofit entity.Well, now you need a fiscal sponsor. So, what is fiscal sponsorship and why do you need to know about it? And even more importantly, how do you find the just-right organization to partner up with. When I started Urban Coyote Initiative, I partnered up with an organization called WILD Foundation. Not only was WILD a home for the project when it was up and running, but is now a fiscal sponsor and a collaborative partner for Her Wild Vision initiative.WILD Foundation has thus played an important role in my conservation photography work, as well as in the work of many others, including big names such as Cristina Mittermeier and James Balog. It is safe to say that WILD Foundation knows exactly what it is doing when it comes to partnering up with conservation visual storytellers! That’s why I'm honored to have Vance Martin, the president of WILD Foundation, join us for this episode to share what fiscal sponsorship is, what it means to collaborate with a nonprofit partner, and what he has learned over the years about the requirements for a successful collaboration. You'll LearnWhat is has been like for Vance to have worked for WILD Foundation since 1984. Why conservation photography fits so well into WILD Foundation’s mission. What it takes to set up a collaboration agreement between a photographer/filmmaker and WILD.How conservation organizations like WILD help people to get funding for their initiatives. The responsibilities of the fiscal sponsor and how they protect the interests of all parties. Why WILD Foundation does these collaborative agreements and what they look for in projects. A photographer’s responsibilities in their relationships with a fiscal sponsor.Advice for how visual conservation storytellers can go about looking for a fiscal sponsor. #5. In this episode of CREATE. PHOTOGRAPHY we will discuss the importance of photography projects (and also one of the most important photography projects of all time).Photography projects are a fantastic way for photographers to focus some of their work, and to get and to stay motivated. As mentioned in episode 1, projects might be a way out of creative block. So, what are projects? We could define a project as a distinct and cohesive body of work that highlights the artists vision, has a theme and a concept. It should be executed in a cohesive style. There are of course hundreds of ideas on what such project could look like, and only our fantasy and creativity is ultimately limiting us (and of course, our available time and energy). We will discuss the many benefits of projects, give some examples and discuss some of the key elements of an artistic photography project. We will end the episode by discussing a project that transformed photography. For a full transcript of this episode and additional resources, go to https://danielsiggphotography.com/projects

#019: So, you feel a little bit stuck in where you are in your photography. You want a way to practice your skills and need an outlet, something to work on, a goal that’ll get you to pick up your camera, a motivator that’ll get you outside and working. You know a new photography project would help, but you’re drawing a blank on what.It can’t be too big, or too ambitious. You want a motivator, after all, not a new source of pressure and stress. It needs to be fun and engaging, but also push you past your comfort zone.It needs to stretch your skills and make you excited to explore, yet not have a huge or intimidating learning curve. And you need to see some quick wins to keep you inspired.I’ve curated a list of 5 ideas that hit this “sweet spot” in difficulty level – just enough to challenge you but also keep you engaged until you hit the finish line. And if none of these ideas quite fit your needs, I created something special for you. As the world marks this day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27th), it is fitting that this short podcast interview with photographer Danny Weiss makes its appearance here. For the last three years, Danny has photographed 18 men and women who are survivors of The Holocaust. He has done so to celebrate who they are, and more than that who they have chosen to become after their escape from the atrocities in Europe. He found them not brooding their fate, but embracing a new life and thriving, running businesses, raising families, and becoming citizens of their new home in America.

Most recently? Iced cinnamon tea. IT'S SO SWEET! You don't have to add any sugar to it and it tastes like sweet tea! - I love living in our triangle house, but this pentagon shaped house has me rethinking what shape would be a better abode. - Ice cream cones. No link required. I just found gluten free cones at the grocery store and I've been eating a lot of halo top ice cream cones and feeling very good about it. - Rocko's Modern Life. OK, bear with me a second. This show might be the most accurate portrayal of what it's like to be an adult that's ever been on TV. Episodes are about joining the gym, getting the flu, going grocery shopping, flying coach and having kids bother you on the flight, washing your dog, going to the laundromat... it's seriously so good.

Ted and Morag have worked both collaboratively and as individuals for over 12 years now and exhibit their work around the world, with their fine art prints featuring in many private collections. They lead dynamic and friendly photographic trips and workshops in association with Ocean Capture. Currently these are based in the UK as well as Iceland, Italy, the Faroe Islands, Croatia, South America and China. They also offer private tuition and tours, for groups and individuals as well as a dedicated mentoring programs and portfolio reviews. In recognition of the fact that travel photography can have a negative environmental impact, all of their trips include carbon offset. Leeming and Paterson live between Liguria in Italy and rural south-west Scotland on their zero footprint small holding. They built their own eco-house powered and heated by its own wind turbine. Their land is now fenced and reverting from agricultural pasture to native woodland with over 3000 trees planted, whilst a poly tunnel provides year round vegetables for the table. This venue and lifestyle form the inspiration for the "Zero Footprint" project.  We covered some great topics this week, including: 1. How Morag & Ted got into landscape photography. 2. Abstract Impressionism photography. 3. Their Zero Footprint project & climate change. 4. Collaborating with each other as artists. https://www.rockethub.com/projects/61988-support-the-art-of-photography-artist-series We are in the home stretch to fund the Artist Series! There's still time to get involved and help me out - check out the link above. You guys are amazing - we've raised over $12,000 so far which has overshot the original goal by 247 percent! So what does this mean? It means I'll put all of the money into the series. This means more videos, it improves the range of people we could possibly get for the Artist Series. It also will allow for international travel. If you've thought about donating but haven't yet - please do it before we close the campaign! "Red circles?!" I could barely disguise my confusion and skepticism. "Yeah... I want to photograph red circles," she replied confidently. We were working on our Abstracts in Adams Photo Tour, and I'd asked our attendees to come up with a theme or project they could shoot for the day.  Most attendees usually pick things like bicycles, a color, texture or even graffiti. But I wasn't prepared for the ultra-specific answer, red circles. "How many red circles is she going to find in Adams Morgan. I don't want her to disappointed," I thought as I searched for a way to gently redirect her to a more 'attainable' goal." Nope. Red circles. The decision had been made. I learned a thing or two about selecting photo projects. that day The process need not be complicated nor the subject obvious. You just need something for which you can be passionate and dedicated.  WHY IS THIS EVEN IMPORTANT? "A Personal Photography project is a way for a photographer to showcase their passion for something," writes Neha Singh, of ShutterMonks.com in Digital Photography School. "Or it can just be a way to bring structure to one’s photography hobby. It can be a great way to challenge the limits of one’s skills. Or it can be a great way to bring focus to one’s photography efforts. "A Personal Photography project is just a commitment to self." Now that we have great weather and maybe some free time, this summer might be a good time to launch your own personal photo project. Here are 51 other ideas to consider shooting.
