AMTLab Lead Researcher, Hannah Brainard talks with Zoey Sandoval and Matthew Ragan, the creators of SudoMagic, a design and software development studio, which focuses on immersive experiences. In this podcast, Sandoval and Ragan share how their respective backgrounds in filmmaking and performance have set them up for careers in immersive design. After meeting at a conference for Art & Technology in 2015, the collaborators combined their talents to form the design studio 2020 and work with companies such as Meta, Apple, T-Mobile, and Dell as they reimagined their physical spaces. Sandoval and Ragan discuss TouchDesigner and other software and hardware used to create these experiences. Diving into the creative process, storytelling and participatory design are recurring elements in their work, including recent projects Calaveras (This is Not a Sugar Skull) , and Lumisphere Experience. While artificial intelligence and machine learning have been tools in their artistic practice, Sandvol and Ragan offer predictions and ethical concerns around how these models may be trained and implemented in the future.

I love how art can enhance hospitality and the travel experience, and in this episode, Teresa Muk, Head of Brand and Strategic Marketing at Swire Hotels, explains the latest activation they've done at their luxury hotel collection, The House Collective. The project we're discussing today is called 'Encounters Across Cultures', and it's being hosted in four cities: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Beijing. These installations will be displayed in The House Collective's hotels through early next year to showcase the blend of art, technology, and culture and celebrate the return of travel post-pandemic.I found this quite impressive and think it will inspire you to think about how art can play a role in the way you provide hospitality. What did you think about this episode? Why are millions of people flocking to hi-tech immersive shows like Van Gogh Alive, Frida Kahlo, King Tut, and Shakespeare's The Tempest? Or cultural monoliths like The Office and Stranger Things? Does this form of art lessen the value of classic art, or does its popularity and Instgram-ability help introduce new generations? And what's going on when best-loved Hollywood shows are codified this way? We ask art critics for their take.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hey everybody! Episode 107 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Yukia Sandara. I met Yukia recently and felt she had a really interesting story and had something special to share. I was really happy to sit down with her and this conversation exceeded my expectations. In fact I think it was a masterclass in many ways of a lot of different concepts of a spiritual path. We got into some really interesting topics including her growing up in apartheid South Africa, her opening up as a channel in her childhood, communication with star beings, the role of guidance and action, the power of free-will and freedom, and what she has learned over her years walking her path. It was a really fascinating conversation and I think you all will gain much from it. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!“Yukia is like you, just a reflection of You, and has dedicated the past years to experiencing and expressing passionately her Inter Galactic Star seed trajectory by travelling the World as a mother, a grandmother, a child, a woman, a student, a friend, a lover, a teacher, a healer, a Transformation Language of Light Activator/Decoder, an observer and a witness, a Higher Consciousness change agent, a facilitator of events and a Inter-Galactic Mentor/Life coach. Yukia woke up at the age of 6 and then partially shut down whilst still astral traveling through dimensions and experiencing being different and odd until a later time when she accepted her full Mission. She comes from a corporate Change /Transformation Coaching background before her full activation as a Walk in Soul in 2002. Since then she has been called from within to dedicate her Life mission in Service to the Planet and Humanity sharing her love, wisdom and gifts. For many years Yukia was called to experiment and retrieve and recall all parts of her original Self, her inner knowledge and wisdom from ancient mystery schools of spiritual teachings, Inter Galactic Higher Learning Centers, Gaia's Consciousness and her Body of consciousness Inner Guidance. With this she has developed New Earth empowerment Tools; New Human Template Etheric Tuning, Sound and Light encoded tools outside Time space and Source Energy signatures / Grids, scrolls, tablets, Keys reflected in her Art Technology for the Planet and for Humanity as it steps into sovereignty in the New Earth.” To learn more about or contact Yukia, visit her website at: https://www.yukiasandara.com and https://www.sacredworlds.comIf you enjoy the show, it would be a big help if you could share it with your own audiences via social media or word of mouth.

Welcome to an episode with an artist, researcher, author, and educator at Northwestern University, Julio Mario Ottino. Get Julio's book here: https://amzn.to/3spt2Nn Individuals and organizations face complex problems and challenges today that demand a new way of thinking to grasp underlying solutions and opportunities. In this episode, Julio shares the beauty of the coexistence of art, science, and technology – rather than being separate disciplines – to navigate the complex world. Julio was born in Argentina and grew up with twin interests in physical sciences and visual arts, finding beauty in math and art, and seeing creativity as being one thing, rather than something that lives in compartments. Art provided a cathartic means of expression while he grew up in turbulent times. He managed to create a solo art exhibit while drafted as an officer in the Argentinian Navy. When he moved to the United States to pursue a doctorate, his research achievements followed. Most of the early attention Ottino received stemmed from pioneering work in chaos theory and a combination of scientific insight and visualization. His research work has been featured on the covers of Nature, Science, Scientific American, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, and other publications. He has supervised more than 65 Ph.D. theses, written over 250 papers and two books, and has given invited presentations at over 200 universities in the United States and around the world, as well as at organizations such as Accenture, Boeing, Google, 3M, and Unilever. An academic entrepreneur, Ottino was the founding co-director of the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems and educational and research initiatives in design, entrepreneurship, and energy and sustainability. As dean of the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, he founded educational and research partnerships with Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, Pritzker School of Law, Medill School of Journalism, Feinberg School of Medicine, School of Communication, and School of Education and Social Policy, as well as with external partners ranging from the Art Institute of Chicago to Argonne National Lab. We live in an age of increasing complexity and uncertainty. We live in a time when humanity faces extremely complex challenges. Our ability, or lack thereof, to create solutions to such extremely complicated challenges may determine our long-term survival as a civilization. The question is: is our existing style of thinking adequate, or do we require a new style of thinking in order to innovate and lead into the future. In their recent book Julio Ottino and Bruce Mau make a case for “The Nexus”, a radically new way of thinking — one in which art, technology, and science converge to expand our creativity and augment our insight. In this episode or Bridging the Gaps I speak with Julio Ottino who explains “the Nexus” and guides us how to embrace the powerful idea of complementarity, where opposing extremes coexist. We discuss how blurring the lines between the three major realms of human creation — art, technology, and science — results in a significant expansion of thinking spaces and a richness of potential ideas. Julio Ottino is Dean of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and a professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern University, in Illinois. He is also the founding co-director of Northwestern University's Institute on Complex Systems. He is a thought leader, author, artist, and internationally recognized researcher in chaos theory and complex systems whose work has been featured in “Nature”, “Science”, and “Scientific American”. We begin our discussion by looking back at the time before the divergence of disciplines and how key figures in science immensely benefited from talents and skills in a variety of fields.

Founded in 2016, ATŌ developed a proprietary technology that utilizes the decentralized database model to store market data and information on works of art they've authenticated. Their freely accessible resource aims to increase trust and transparency in the art market by giving artists and collectors the tools to understand the value of their art. After conducting hundreds of surveys and interviews, she and her team identified the most significant problems facing artists and collectors: counterfeits, provenance, and data for valuation. For Carrie, the solution is in the Data. In making more #artdata accessible to artists and collectors, she hopes that she can restore confidence and transparency to allow artists to grow their careers and invite a new class of collectors to the table. Her experience as an art technology entrepreneur and collector are insightful and informative to both creators and art world insiders. Laura Splan is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work mines the materiality of science to reveal poetic subjectivities. Her mixed media projects destabilize notions of the presence and absence of bodies evoking the mutability of categories that delineate their status. Splan’s work compels an intimate engagement with detail calling into question how things are made and what they are made of. She reconsiders perceptions and representations of the corporeal with a range of traditional and new media techniques. She often combines the quotidian with the unfamiliar to interrogate cultural constructions of order and disorder, function and dysfunction. Her frequent combinations of textiles with technology challenge values of "the hand" in creative production and question notions of agency and chance in aesthetics. Her recent Embodied Objects series uses biosensors (electromyography, electroencephalography) to create data-driven forms and patterns for digitally fabricated sculptures, weavings and works on paper as well as for movement in performances with sensor-actuated apparatus. Her current solo exhibition, Conformations, combines biotech imagery, networked devices, and artifacts with sculptures made from the hand-spun fiber of laboratory animals. Splan's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Arts & Design and Beall Center for Art + Technology. International audiences for her work have included Iceland, South Korea, England, Germany, Sweden, Austria, and Canada. Her work is included in the collections of the Thoma Art Foundation, the NYU Langone Art Collection, and the Science Center. Her biomedical themed artworks have been commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control Foundation, the Gen Art New Media Art Exhibition and Davidson College. She has received research funding from The Jerome Foundation and her residencies have been supported by the Knight Foundation, the Institute for Electronic Arts, Harvestworks, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She has been a visiting lecturer at Stanford University teaching interdisciplinary courses including “Embodied Interfaces”, “Data as Material” and “Art & Biology”. She is currently a Creative Experiments track member at NEW INC, the New Museum’s cultural incubator. Sound & Vision is sponsored by Golden Paints.

My recording equipment was flipping out (or maybe It was me). Which may seem like a hindrance to artistic expression but then I realized that the flipping out was part of the flipping art! I'm trying out a new audio interface—the device that takes sounds from the supposedly real analog word and converts them into the virtual world of my computer—and nothing seems to be working. Yes, it's another episode in the ongoing battle between me and my technology tools—computers, recording software, virtual instruments, FX plug-ins, mics, MIDI keyboards (that send out random pitch bend data), etc. Just when you think you've got the collective beast of advanced music technology working for as opposed to against you, something goes terribly wrong. It stops you in your tracks—literally prevents you from recording your tracks. But here's the thing I've learned over the course of several decades of recording: the taming, the mastering, the fighting with technology is very much part of the artistic process. The tools are not merely a means to an end, they are fully integrated into the end. You can't, in the end, separate the tools from the finished product. And that includes all of the technology mishaps, the beta versions, the random quantum fluctuations. All of these things are part of the art. It’s always been a constant struggle for artists to find support to continue their work. Every day we wake up, however, instantly becomes the greatest day in human history to find that support. Technology is, for all its light and darkness, a great platform for establishing connections between the artist and the patron. But ARE we doing enough? Is the artist doing enough? Is the patron being active enough? Is social media necessary for strengthening these interactions? On this episode we’ll talk about these issues within art and technology. We will also hear the wise words of computer philosopher Jaron Lanier and why he thinks these types of connections do NOT need social media. He believes that technology can be the platform but that other meeting places within it should be explored, ones that don’t involve ‘behavior modification’, so typically found behind the scenes of Twitter, Facebook and others.Speaking of other ways to connect, let’s hear what you have to say! Leave a comment below, send us a personal message, email us or share your blog! Let’s find a way to connect! And remember, Troy always has a project going, so make sure to consider supporting that or sharing it with your network of (rich) friends! His latest project is www.gofundme.com/arthopconnections. This new project is a sound and light installation he was asked to create for an art show on March 1. Short timeline, so get out there and support, if you can! All the information and the timeline can be found on the Go Fund Me page.

Today, LACMA's Art + Tech Lab (est. in 2013) continues this spirit of cross-disciplinary collaboration, funding artist-led projects that wouldn't be achievable without the financial and advisory support offered through the Lab. In this episode, we speak with Joel Ferree, Art + Technology Lab Program Director, about the history of the Lab, the various projects and partnerships that have are offered, and LACMA's commitment to providing the time, space and resources to make possible these creative projects.-About LACMA's Art + Tech Lab-Inspired by the spirit of LACMA's original Art and Technology program (1967-1971), which paired artists with technology companies in Southern California, the Art + Technology Lab at LACMA supports artist experiments with emerging technology. Through our sponsors, the Lab provides grants, in-kind support, and facilities at the museum to develop new artist projects. To date, 20 artists from around the world, including Ghana, Ireland, Korea, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Switzerland, have received awards through the Art + Technology Lab.Learn more about the Art + Tech Lab hereCover art by Graydon Speace
With new technology expanding the forefronts of today’s society, it seems as if there is a solution for everything nowadays thanks to the vast evolution of science. However, when it comes to health, there is no limit as to what can be achieved to further expand the understanding of health care. Thanks to the inner workings of NASA certified technology, the world of Chiropractic care now has a better way to detect nerve interference and get to the root cause of any health problem. Macomb Township Chiropractic Chiropractors Chris McNeiland Franklin Nortonuse the latest in state of the art technology, including an infrared thermal Scan, and an S.E.M.G muscle test. S.E.M.G standing for Surface Electromyography which is a device that measures the amount of electrical activity within the muscles, when they are contracting, caused by muscle tension. Muscle tension and nerve interference, is caused when bones are shifted out of proper alignment, putting pressure on the nerves causing them to be irritated and inflamed, leading to aches, pains, and even dysfunction. The testing gives an accurate assessment of the entire spine starting at the base of the skull and finishing at the tail bone. The test measures in three colors; Green for mild, blue for moderate, and red for severe levels of nerve interference. Patients from all over Macomb County are getting a better idea of health and healing with this new system in place. Not only have the patients been more on board with care, but the doctors at Macomb Township Chiropractic are getting better results because of it! Dr. Chris McNeil Macomb Twp. Chiropractic Clinic director explains, “With the surface EMG muscle test, and the infrared thermographic scanner, I can now get a precise examination of any acute stress on my patients spinal nerves, and deliver specific scientific chiropractic adjustments to that exact area of the body, relieving any built up muscle tension.” Nerve interference can wreak havoc on a body and develop into underlying weaknesses that could go undetected for years. Orthopedic textbooks state that in an early stage of nerve interference there may not be any symptoms at all. In fact, it can be present for up to an entire 10 years without any indication of it. To give a better understanding of nerve interference in the spine, here’s a breakdown of what can happen in each area. Starting in the lower back, multiple levels of nerve interference can shoot through the hips and down into the legs causing not only aches and pains, but numbness, and tingling that travels all the way down into the feet if left there long enough. These nerves also control digestion, the urinary track, and reproductive system as well, so some very crucial organ systems involved. In the mid back, aches and pains can also be felt, but dysfunction can also be present in the Respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, and the upper digestive track. In the neck, nerve interference controls the musculature between the shoulder blades, and down the arms. Aches, pains, stiffness, and decrease range of motion are the many symptoms associated with that kind of blockage. Headaches, migraines, TMJ, dizziness, vertigo, sinus issues, ringing in the ears, thyroid conditions, immunity problems -just to name a few, are also an array of issues that plague people on a regular basis if interference is left there long enough. Dr. Franklin Norton is no stranger when it comes to dealing with high levels of nerve interference. He says “Over 78 trillion nerves exit from the bottom of the brain and travel to every muscle, cell, tissue, and organ of the body. With basic science we know that every nerve exits through the brain stem and travels down into the spinal cord delivering specific messages, to specific functions. With that being said, when there is interference blocking those messages from getting through, symptoms can arise globally throughout the whole entire body.” This technology is at the leading edge of health care assessments and reporting. It is performed to determine areas of abnormal muscle imbalance. These imbalances may be caused by spinal subluxations and may interfere with the communication between the brain and other parts of the body. It is safe, effective, reliable, and accurate in terms of being used. Chiropractors can now continue to recommend care plans with an even greater accuracy and confidence when using the INSiGHT scanning systems. Let nerve interference be a thing of the past, and make an appointment today at Macomb Township Chiropractic and visit www.MetroDetroitChiropractors.com for more info.

Her own art work is playful with a purpose, engaging the viewers own biases and judgements and forcing them to "judge" the figure she paints. She has exhibited her work in several exhibitions throughout the Midwest and her work resides in several collections including that of well known Chicago collector Howard Tullman.

Appropriation-based art forms, such as sampling, collage, remixing, modding and mashups, have gone mainstream in recent years. While many in the business and legal communities frame these cultures as "piracy" or "infringement", practitioners are developing a more nuanced ethical framework. Sinnreich will present new research analyzing these emerging ethical codes and explore their significance for law, industry and society. Aram Sinnreich is an assistant professor of journalism and media studies at Rutgers University.
