Today, I am blessed to have here with me Tero Isokauppila. Tero is the founder of Four Sigmatic, a nature-centric Finnish-American company specializing in functional mushrooms, superfoods, and adaptogens. Born in Finland to an agronomist father and nursing teacher mother, Tero was the 13th generation to grow up on the Isokauppila farm. I spoke with Tapio during his stopover in Auckland, NZ, during the Ocean Globe Race. We talk about the race, his boat (a Swam 55 yawl), sails,  the sinking of Asteria in the 2022 GGR, being rescued by Kirsten, Galiana's crew, crossing the equator, looking forward to Cape Horn, the decreasing wildlife in the oceans, and more.

UPM tarjosi alkuvuodesta uusia monimuotoisuusmittareita metsänomistajille, syyskuussa valmistui Metsäteollisuus ryn ja Sahateollisuus ryn tilaamana puuta jalostavan teollisuuden monimuotoisuustiekartta, metsänhoidon suosituksia julkaiseva Tapio oy on parhaillaan päivittämässä luonnonhoidon suosituksiaan, ja MTK järjesti kesällä seminaarin aiheesta. Tilaisuudessa puhui myös Luonnonvarakeskuksen tutkimusprofessori Matti Koivula. Minna Pyykkö lähti Matti Koivulan kanssa Nuuksioon metsäretkelle hienona syyspäivänä juttelemaan metsäluonnon monimuotoisuuteen vaikuttavista tekijöistä ja siitä, miten niitä voidaan entistä paremmin huomioida talousmetsissä.

Season 4 of Science in Parallel centers around creativity and computing, starting with an interview about climate modeling. At this nexus of physics, earth science, mathematics and computing, researchers are also racing against the clock to accurately predict how global climate is shifting before the changes happen. Pulling all the scientific pieces together and communicating those results so that others can use them are significant creative challenges—ones that both Tapio Schneider and Emily de Jong of California Institute of Technology have embraced. In our conversation, Tapio and Emily describe how both the science and societal impact of climate modeling motivate them, how outdoor activities and music shape their perspectives, and how they view creativity both inside and outside the lab. Later in the episode, Tapio shares his experience as a science advisor to the ClimateMusic Project—an artists' collaboration that's producing music and video pieces that explore climate change and solutions to the climate crisis. You'll meet: Tapio Schneider is a professor of environmental science and engineering at Caltech. He's a member of the Climate Modeling Alliance (CLiMA) a team of scientists, engineers and applied mathematicians from Caltech, MIT and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory working on a new earth system model that uses computatational and data-science tools to harness Earth observations and make more accurate climate predictions. He spoke about that research at the 2023 Annual Program Review of the Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) program in July. Emily de Jong is a Ph.D. student in mechanical engineering at Caltech working in Tapio's research group. She is a DOE CSGF recipient, who completed her undergraduate degree at Princeton University in 2019.

Growing up outside Braunschweig, just on the west side of the border with East Germany during the Cold War, Tapio Schneider spent a lot of his teenage years doing sports, and skiing (often just meters away from the East German border patrol) became a large part of his life. He also had a keen interest in science and a desire to understand the world around him, and so he decided to study physics and math---he did that at the University of Freiburg, a school he picked in no small part due to its close proximity to the Black Forest, which meant that he could continue to ski as much as possible. Science became more and more important to him though, and after he came to the US (with what was supposed to be an exchange fellowship, but Tapio ended up not going back to Germany), his career quickly took off, starting from his PhD with Isaac Held (a previous guest on the podcast) at Princeton and on to his current position at Caltech. The array of topics on which Tapio has made major contributions, and the magnitude and impact of those contributions are astonishing. After his early, field-changing work on the general circulation of the atmosphere, Tapio did a whole set of studies on planetary atmospheres. And then he got into marine stratocumulus, and the parameterization of those clouds in models. This led him to studies of clouds and climate more broadly, and eventually to rethinking how climate models should work from the ground up. On top of that, Tapio's early work on statistical methods, though just an aside for him, have become hugely influential papers for statisticians and scientists alike. For the last few years, Tapio has been leading the CliMA project at Caltech. A visionary endeavor, the project aims to bring about a paradigm shift in the way climate models are constructed and used. It advocates for a more holistic approach, making use of observations, machine learning, and high-resolution simulations. The inception of CliMA came from a series of workshops on the future of Earth system modeling. They ended up being a lot of fun and very interesting. […] Each time, it was like 30-some people, perhaps. So it was fairly small, [and] you could interact intensely with everyone. And we we were just trying to ask the question, "So suppose you don't have to deal with these layers upon layers of history on climate models, how would you go about building a climate model now if you could?" And it was really meant as a hypothetical at the time. There wasn't any plan to build a climate model. The plan came later, and it turned into CliMA. As with any pioneering venture, the road hasn't always been easy, but Tapio has an exceptional ability to treat challenges just as problems to be solved step-by-step—and to not lose sight of the big picture while doing so. Tapio Lehtinen heräsi 18. marraskuuta 2022 kovaan rysähdykseen. Sitten hän huomasi, että hänen purjeveneensä oli täyttymässä merivedellä. Legendary Finnish sailor Tapio Lehtinen returns to the podcast to talk to Andy about losing his boat in the recent Golden Globe Race and the emotional toll it took on him. Reading from the book I co-wrote with Tapio Lehtinen "On a Belt of Foaming Seas," about his 2018 Golden Globe Race campaign. In this chapter, Tapio is sailing alone in the Southern Ocean trying to get past the islands and shoals south of New Zealand during a gale.

Tapio recently sailed in the 2022 Golden Globe Race, as he did in 2018. He was doing well in the race until his boat sank in the  Southern Ocean after rounding the Cape of Good Hope. We talk about preparing for the race, windvanes, sail configurations, wildlife encounters,  the sinking of his boat, the rescue, and his journey on the cargo ship Darya Gayatri.

Helmikuussa 2020 Julle ja Teppo viettivät Tapsan kanssa lähes parituntisen session jonka tuloksena oli yksi ohjelman historian kuunneluimmista jaksoista. Ohjelmassa Suominen käy avoimesti läpi pitkää uraansa YLEn palveluksessa, huippuhetkiä ja vaikeampia aikoja sekä myös mielen murheita joista hän kertoi avoimesti myös kirjassaan "Urheiluhullu".

Synopsis On this day in 1926, Walter Damrosch conducted the New York Symphony in the first performance of the last major orchestral work of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius—his symphonic tone poem Tapiola. The title refers to an ancient Finnish forest god, Tapio, and the music suggests an ancient mystery culminating in a burst of terrifying savagery. After receiving the score, Damrosch wrote this note of appreciation to the composer: "No one but a Norseman could have written this work. We were all enthralled by the dark pine forests and the shadowy gods and wood nymphs who dwell therein. The coda with its icy winds sweeping through the forest made us shiver." Today the commission fee Damrosch paid Sibelius for this orchestral masterpiece makes US shiver: Sibelius was paid only $400. At this point in his career, Sibelius was afflicted by intense self-doubt. He wrote in his diary: "I have suffered because of Tapiola,... was I really cut out for this sort of thing? Going downhill. Can't be alone. Drinking whiskey. Physically not strong enough for all this…" For the next 30 years and more, Sibelius lived in retirement, drinking heavily, and though rumors persisted that he was still writing music, no scores were discovered after his death. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Tero Isokauppila. Tero is the founder of Four Sigmatic, a nature-centric Finnish-American company specializing in functional mushrooms, superfoods, and adaptogens. Born in Finland to an agronomist father and nursing teacher mother, Tero was the 13th generation to grow up on the Isokauppila farm. Tapio is preparing to sail around the world in the Golden Globe Race, which starts in September. He did the same race in 2018 and finished fifth, out of 18 starters and only five finishers.
