Yesterday was World AIDS Day and many of the people I admire and follow on various social media platforms made beautiful and heartfelt posts in commemoration of this day and all the many souls that have been lost over the decades to this hideous disease. I want to weigh in today with my own tribute: to the exceptional American baritone John Reardon, who died of this disease in 1988 at the age of 58. This is an expanded version of a bonus episode I published more than four years ago which constituted a deep exploration of his recorded legacy, in both live or studio recordings, of musical, opera (especially contemporary works), and art song. You'll hear guest contributions from the two Judys, (Raskin and Blegen; sorry, no Garland today), as well as Jo Sullivan, Beverly Wolff, Anja Silja, Evelyn Lear, and James McCracken, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, Thomas Beecham, Sarah Caldwell, Erich Leinsdorf, Frederic Waldman, Lehman Engel, Jorge Mester, as well as that great stage director Bliss Hebert doing a guest turn tickling the ivories in two song cycles. If you listen extra closely, you may even hear a line or two from Beverly Sills, Robert Merrill, Cesare Siepi, and Jussi Björling! The episode also includes a birthday tribute to Maria Callas and, as a memorial to all who have succumbed to AIDS, “When Angels Cry,” a song by Janis Ian. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. In this candid interview, veteran watch dealer Matthew Bain discusses how the watch industry and collecting has changed over the past 40 years. Matt shares many fascinating stories including the entrepreneurial way in which he started his career while at college in the 1980s, when he would enlist his friends to buy Swatch watches (purchases of which were limited per person at the time), that he would then sell to the Italians. Also inspired by his father who was a collector, Matt continued his passion buying and selling watches after college until one day someone offered him a Patek Philippe World Time ref. 2523 which he and his father purchased and the next day he left his job at a bank — and the rest is a fascinating history! Over the decades, Matt has brought and sold many important Patek Philippe watches, several of which can now be seen in the Patek Philippe Museum. Daryn started her career at Sotheby's in 1980 straight out of college, and today is the chairman of the International Watch Division. For over 40 years, she has built an exceptional career and at one time, every watch department head of the top auction houses trained under Daryn's tutelage. Daryn was an early pioneer of wristwatches as a new collecting category and organized the first dedicated wristwatch auctions. Under her leadership, watch sales expanded in Geneva, and in 1997 she opened Sotheby's first Asian watch department in Hong Kong. Daryn has played a pivotal role in the sale of numerous important single owner watch and clock collections. These include the now iconic 1999 auction of the masterpieces from the Time Museum in which the Patek Philippe Graves Supercomplication hammered for USD11 million, a significant world record for any timepiece at auction at the time. In 2012, Daryn sold the horological collection of her friend and former colleague George Daniels for USD14 million. Smithsonian Curator Carlene Stephens discusses quartz watches and much more

This is one of the most wide-ranging conversations we have ever had on a Collectability Podcast. Topics covered range from Charles Darwin, Alexander Graham Bell, Einstein and Lindbergh to the development of quartz technology and the importance of electronic clocks in horological history. Even elephants get discussed in relation to collecting watches! Carlene E. Stephens is a Curator at the Division of Work and Industry in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Her specialities are broad as she oversees the museum's historical clocks and watches, robots and automatons, and acoustic sound recording technologies. She is the author of "On Time: How Americans Learned to Live by the Clock", and other publications relating to the cultural history of timekeeping, and is a leading expert on quartz technology. Carlene's appreciation for quartz timekeeping dates back to the mid 1980s when she realized that the museum did not own a single electronic watch in its' collection. Her quest to learn more about quartz timekeeping opened a huge world of discovery as she needed to study the components of quartz technology -- the development of batteries, integrated circuits, displays such as LED, LCD -- the list went on. Her research led to the fact that quartz technology started back in the 1920s when it was tied with communication, particularly in the U.S.A. with companies such as Bell Labs and AT&T. Appreciating that quartz is a very under-studied part of the horological story-line, Carlene has been writing a book in the hope to address this under-reported, but essential part of history. As Collectability discovered with our exhibition of Patek Philippe electronic clocks, the so-called Quartz Crisis is an often mis-understood period of time. In this fascinating and engaging conversation, John Reardon and Carlene Stephens dive deep into the meaning of time, the history of quartz and electronic clock development -- and much, much more. Within the watch auction world, there is no one else who can match Osvaldo's contribution to and influence on the watch collecting world. In fact, it's fair to say that Osvaldo Patrizzi really pioneered watch collecting and the auction market, significantly contributing to today's demand for luxury watches. In 1974, Osvaldo Patrizzi founded Antiquorum and built it into the world's leading auction house for fine timepieces and an important source for watch collectors. Antiquorum has achieved countless world records in sales of watches, clocks, and other timekeeping devices at auction. He was also an internet pioneer and Antiquorum was the first auction house to take its watch auctions online. Always ahead of the curve, Antiquorum opened an office in Hong Kong in 1979, many years before any other international auction house opened in Asia. Osvaldo also pioneered the concept of a thematic auction starting in 1989 with one of the most legendary watch auctions, “The Art of Patek Philippe” in which over 300 timepieces were auctioned including a then world record for the most complicated timepiece ever made, the Calibre 89 which sold for $3.2 million, a truly unprecedented sum in the 1980s. Not only is Osvaldo Patrizzi a great scholar of watchmaking and has authored many books on the subject, but he also gathered and nurtured some of the greatest watch experts. In 2000, he was named to be among the 20 most influential people in the field of horology in the 20th century. In this interview with John Reardon, Osvaldo Patrizzi discusses his long career in the watch industry and his many innovations within the auction and collecting world.

John Reardon interviews the three principles of Loupe This, the new online auction platform that has already broken a world record for the sale of a 1967 Cartier Crash ($1.65 million), and is changing the way we buy vintage watches. Eric Ku, Justin Gruenberg and Sam Hines discuss their plans for Loupe This and share their candid opinions on the marketplace during these turbulent times, plus they give their predictions for future trends in watch collecting. Recently, in what John Reardon describes as a "nuclear announcement", Sam Hines joined Loupe This responsible for growing the business in Asia as well as globally. The watch world is buzzing with questions about why Sam Hines left the venerable, traditional auction world as global head of watches at Sotheby's to join a technologically-driven online auction. Sam graciously answers all the questions and shares some amazing -- and humorous stories about his past, present and future in the watch world. Justin Gruenberg rarely gives interviews and his views on collecting and the watch market are both fascinating and insightful. Described as "the man that controls the marketplace", Justin brought his first collectable watch at auction, a Patek Philippe chronograph for $100,000, at the age of fifteen. Today he focuses on building his family business and is constantly praised by all who work with him for his integrity, honesty and intelligence. Eric Ku is one of the world's leading authorities on vintage Rolex and has been called a Super Dealer by Hodinkee. Referred to as "a mogul of the watch world", Eric owns several important watch businesses including 10 Past Ten, the Vintage Rolex Forum (VRF) and LA Watchworks. He is also on the board of the Horological Society of New York and cares deeply about the future training of watchmakers. His opinions on the watch industry are highly regarded and Collectability is honored that he and his Loupe This partners Justin Gruenberg and Sam Hines gave such a thoughtful and informative interview in this podcast.

Supervisors consider proposing a tax to fund water and fire

May 19, 2022 — The Board of Supervisors considered proposing a sales tax to fund firefighting efforts and water projects this week. The Board cannot impose a tax, but it can draft an ordinance and put it before the voters on a ballot. In this case, the tax initiative would appear on the November ballot, which could also feature a quarter-cent tax initiative to fund the libraries. Measure B, the tax to fund mental healthcare facilities, is due to decrease from a half cent to an eighth of a cent this year. The Supervisors hope to make up the difference with the new tax, which Interim CEO Darcie Antle calculated would bring in about $7 million a year. “The Measure B tax that currently comes in on an average has been around $9 million a year,” she said. “If you start with the $9 million, the three-eighths is $7 million.” Supervisor Dan Gjerde told his colleagues he is not the voter who needs to be persuaded, but he's also not convinced the Board can sell it to a two-thirds majority of the electorate. “The voters are not going to rubber-stamp a tax that this Board of Supervisors puts on the ballot,” he cautioned. “I think we should approach this with some humility.” He reminded the Board of the referendum effort to collect signatures demanding that a new cannabis ordinance, Chapter 22.18, be rescinded. “It was likely to succeed at overturning that ordinance,” he recalled. The demand to rescind never made it to the ballot. Instead, the Supervisors, who had voted 4-1 with Supervisor John Haschak dissenting to pass the new ordinance, agreed to rescind it without a campaign fight. “I don't think we have the credibility to go to the voters and say, of all the ways that you can spend your tax dollars, this is the way,” Gjerde continued. He said he thinks there are good arguments to be made for funding water and fire services, but that he believes successful tax initiatives come from the electorate, like the volunteer library supporters, who are busy gathering signatures at all the usual venues. “I think they're the ones who are showing the way to do it,” he opined. “It's not by rounding up three or five votes on the Board of Supervisors, because that is a path to nowhere.” Ron Edwards, a cannabis advocate who keeps a close eye on the Board, suggested an argument. “Is this enough money?” he asked. “It seems like the need might be much greater…if you guys could dig into it deeply to find out exactly what the need would be, I think that would be a better sell for the public.” Supervisor Glenn McGourty thought the tax could have a lasting impact, just as the future of one legacy project is at its most uncertain. “What we're really going to need is to have the ability to study and be at the table, particularly with the Potter Valley Project,” he said. “What I'm hoping that we do is chart a path forward for the next hundred years. Because we've been living on about a hundred years of legacy decision-making in Mendocino County on water. And our time has literally run out. For instance, we've had all this wonderful free abandoned water from the Potter Valley Project, which has helped us fill Lake Mendocino and provided very inexpensive water for water users from here clear down to Marin.” One voter was in full support of the proposal. John Reardon, who sits on the boards of the Russian River Flood Control and Water Conservation Improvement District, as well as the Inland Mendocino County Water and Power Commission, told the board he supports using some of the tax revenue to sustain water supply reliability. “Inland Water and Power is in the middle of a battle to try and secure water through the Potter Valley Project,” he noted. Emily Tecchio spoke in support of the proposal, on behalf of the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council. “Something we have noted, as an organization, is that water for fire suppression is a huge need, and something that is pretty difficult to fund through other various mechanisms,” she told the Board. “So we hope that is considered as well.” Volunteer firefighters were on hand to make a case for their allocation, if the voters approve the tax. Dave Latoof is Chief of the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department and current president of the Mendocino County Fire Chiefs' Association. “They know I'm here,” he announced. He expects that most of the voters in his fire district, which straddles the Fourth and Fifth supervisorial districts on the coast, would support a tax that helps fund firefighters. “Please consider a generous amount to fire services,” he urged the Board. “Fire is very popular right now in this county. I think you can ride on that popularity, along with the water…you can't fight fire without water, but all the water in the world won't do any good without firefighters.” Gjerde cautioned that there are voters who will oppose the initiative, saying, “I probably have voted against a few taxes, but probably pretty rarely…when it takes a two-thirds, the person who votes no has twice the voting power as the person who votes yes.” The Board agreed that Supervisor Ted Williams will work with staff to flesh out the particulars of allocating the tax to fire, while McGourty will take on the details about water. An initial draft of the item will return to the full board on June 8th.

Two of the most popular watches, the Nautilus and the Royal Oak were designed by one man, Gérald Genta. In this fascinating conversation with his wife, Evelyne Genta, John Reardon discovers how their partnership resulted in some of the most important watch designs in modern watchmaking history. Equally impressive is her own distinguished career. Since 2011, Her Excellency Madame Evelyne Genta has held the prestigious position as The Ambassador, Monaco embassy to United Kingdom. Born in Monaco, she was educated in London and has lived there for the past 15 years. Between 1983 and 1999, Evelyne and her husband ran the watch brand Gérald Genta. During this exciting and extremely innovative period, Evelyne managed two factories in Switzerland with 250 employees while developing new markets in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. This spring, Sotheby's is auctioning off a selection of Gérald Genta's paintings, including his original 1970 painting of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and his 1976 painting of the Patek Philippe Nautilus. In total, 100 pieces, personally selected by Madame Genta and her daughter Alexia from his treasure trove of over 3,200 works will be sold. Importantly, Sotheby's is selling each painting with an NFT which protects authentication and ownership. The sale is in honor of the 10th anniversary of the death of Gérald Genta and proceeds of the sale will go to the Gérald Genta Heritage Association of which Evelyne Genta is President and Chairperson. Selecting which artworks to auction was a monumental task. Gérald Genta's prolific design portfolio includes designs for all the great watchmakers: in addition to his iconic Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus for Patek Philippe, he designed the SAS Polarouter for Universal Genève at the age of 23, The Constellation for Omega in 1959, The Ingenieur for IWC in 1976 and countless others for watchmakers such as Piaget, Cartier, Corum, Hermès to name but a few. In this Collectability Podcast, we learn how the pieces were selected for auction and hear extraordinary stories about the legend himself and the exciting life Gérald and Evelyne had during their 33 years of marriage. Data: Organizations have an incessant demand for it, in order to operate and innovate—but at the same time, gathering and analyzing all this data creates legitimate privacy concerns. This is what John Reardon, VP & Senior Director of Global Risk Solutions Technology at Liberty Mutual Insurance, calls the *data paradox,* and he talks about it on our latest episode of *The Resonance Test.* Sam Rehman, our Chief Information Security Officer and SVP, poses some questions to Reardon and Val Tsitlik, EPAM's Head of Big Data Practice and VP of Technology Solutions, about how the data paradox works in their worlds. Together this data-wise trio talks through the nuances of the data paradox. It's fascinating in that they chat not just about, say, the relevance of anonymization but the idea of synthetic data (a generated data set that matches the semantics of an actual real data set). Rehman says to Tsitlik that synthetic data allows for testing more closely to real-life scenarios and Tsitlik replies: “I'm almost thinking of this as creating a Sims world”—almost, but not quite, starting a conversation about the metaverse. Listen and learn about data governance in our ever-growing regulatory environment (“It may feel counterintuitive that governance can equal acceleration, but in this space it actually is a key enabler,” says Reardon), tooling (“People always say it's not about the tool, but anybody that actually ever tried to fell a tree with a pocket knife before could tell you sometimes it is about the tool,” notes Rehman), and the always-relevant topic of budgets. Speaking of budgets, if you're a data or security professional, open up your calendar; you'll need set aside 30 minutes to listen to this conversation. Drought off to an early start

February 15, 2022 — The drought is off to an early start, all around the county. Already, no water is available for agricultural use in Redwood Valley. Fort Bragg has 30% less water than it did this time last year. There is still money available to haul water from Ukiah to the coast again, though a water storage proposal for the town of Mendocino did not get funded with the last round of drought grants. In Potter Valley, fifty cubic feet of water per second is flowing through the powerhouse, which is limping along with damaged equipment. However, users expect 140 cubic feet per second to come through via a bypass channel, starting next month. And things are looking dry in Fort Bragg too, according to John Smith, the city operations manager. Though the city has received more rain this year than last, he said it won't be enough to recharge the groundwater unless it rains every day for the rest of the winter. Howard Dashiell, the director of the county Department of Transportation, reported that there is still about 667,000 gallons of water in the holding pond in Fort Bragg from last year's water hauling program. “As the summer goes into the fall, we could haul again,” with funding from the State Department of Water Resources, he said. Lake Mendocino was at just 42,594 acre feet last week, which is about 62% of the target water supply. Still, water must continue to be released in order to satisfy requirements set by the National Marine Fisheries Service to supply water for habitat. At a meeting of the Inland Water and Power Commission right after the drought task force, John Reardon, of the Russian River Flood Control District, gave a quick preview of another possible water storage option that's being explored on Hensley Creek. He said a biological survey found no endangered species. “There's reason for guarded optimism there,” he said, adding that he expects the official report to be available in a couple of weeks. Sean White, the director of water and sewer for the City of Ukiah, reported that pear orchards and one vineyard are already irrigating with recycled water. While some fruit trees are already blooming, Chair Janet Pauli said she's seen dormant watering in other parts of the state, too. “One of the lessons that those of us who farm learned last year is that the drought was so severe we believe we actually had drought-related damage during dormancy, that we could have avoided if we'd had more ground moisture,” she said, adding that during a recent trip along the I-5 corridor, she observed farmers watering walnut orchards that appeared to be completely dormant. With water growing ever more precious, illegal diversions are ever more sternly frowned upon. Supervisor John Haschak gave listeners a heads up that the board is planning to consider an ordinance to regulate hauling water next month, which would require people extracting water and taking it elsewhere to have a permit, business license, hydrology study, and proper tracking logs. The proposed ordinance includes hefty fines for violations. The meeting ended with a final piece of advice — or maybe a secular prayer, from the two supervisors on the drought task force: Think rain, they urged, before logging off. Think rain.

To make the most of data, you need to understand that it requires more than an obvious linear process, with discrete handoffs and dashboards and such. It's about properly viewing data in its living ecosystem, about seeing data as a *loop. * The data loop, in fact, is the central focus of our most recent episode of *The Resonance Test.* John Reardon, VP & Senior Director of Global Risk Solutions Technology at Liberty Mutual Insurance, mixes it up with Val Tsitlik, EPAM's Head of Big Data Practice and VP of Technology Solutions. Also looped in: Dmitry Grinberg, Managing Principal of Technology Solutions at EPAM, who lobs some great questions at these two data-driven men. Reardon says that Liberty Mutual uses the data loop as a framework that “helps us shape our priorities and technical approaches, ensuring that we can realize incremental value and make it real along the way.” He then walks us through the key elements of the loop: unlocking data, making it accessible, providing “good, modern, self-service tooling whenever wherever possible,” and finally operationalizing all the insights the process produces. One of the great advantages, Tsitlik notes, of the data loop is that it focuses the business conversation: Once an organization starts talking about data loops, they stop talking about *data projects.* It's a mindset that looks at the situation “holistically… as a continuous process,” one that involves “ingesting more data” and “providing more access to various customer users.” When they discuss how Liberty Mutual operationalized machine learning, Reardon says: “The more that we can build our models and our capabilities with a simple API approach, the more we can easily integrate those insights into different parts of our environment.” Reardon emphasizes building simple models and deploying and iterating quickly. Everyone agrees that culture change is important and can be challenging. He says: “You can easily understate or even miss, you know, the cultural aspect that's required to head down this path, and we spent a lot of time in our business group educating our leaders first.” But right now it's time for *your* education. Enjoy the conversation. Host: Kenji Ross Engineer: Kyp Pilalas Producer: Ken Gordon

Here's another great baritone to help get us through another week: the extraordinarily versatile and talented John Reardon (1930-1988). Possessed of a voice of extraordinary beauty and flexibility, as well as deeply intuitive interpretive powers and a profound musicality and dramatic sensibility, he had everything it took to make his mark in the fields of musicals, operetta, and opera (the latter in both standard, and, even more significantly, contemporary repertoire). I have several rare live recordings as well as some uncommon studio recordings to share with my listeners. Guest stars include Leontyne Price, Judith Raskin, Jo Sullivan, Lisa Della Casa, Alexander Young, Ragnar Ulfung, Evelyn Lear, and Bliss Hebert, in a rare outing as a pianist accompanying Reardon in a 1967 recording of American art songs. I also pay homage to his television appearances, both on NBC Opera and, especially, between 1968 and 1986, as the character “Reardon” in Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, which served to introduce countless multitudes of children to the glories of opera. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. A few weeks ago, we spoke to Patek Philippe expert (Patexpert?) John Reardon about the discontinuation of the Nautilus 5711 and what it means for Patek mania. This week we’re delighted to bring you part two of our chat with John, where we talk about all the other things Patek Philippe makes besides steel sports watches. From solar clocks to pocket watches and singing birds, we go deep. There’s even a live minute repeater demonstration. We find out what John thinks the next hot watch will be (hint, it’s not Beta 21), what watches he’s hunting down and why he thinks watches are set to overtake fine art as an auction house category in the next few years. John Reardon has spent the last two decades surrounded by Patek Philippe; either in his roles at major auction houses or when he worked for the company in New York. So when news of the discontinuation of the famous (and impossible to acquire) Nautilus 5711 surfaced in the days before our interview, we knew we had to ask John about it. And, as you might expect from one of the world's leading Patek experts, he had some thoughts, particularly about the skyrocketing prices we're seeing at the moment: "I think we're going to look back at this as a market blip. The fact that that we're seeing them for over $100K US, I find — as an historian — almost laughable." To find out why Reardon thinks the hype is nonsensical, we get some context on the model, and just what a 'discontinuation' means for Patek Philippe. Essential listening. Today’s episode (in celebration of Countermelody’s first birthday!) picks up where the last one left off: more musicals, more opera (and operaish) singers! Excerpts from cast recordings, radio broadcasts, telecasts, and live performances highlight the work of singers who divided their time, to a greater or lesser extent, between the Broadway stage and the operatic stage. We begin with the great bass-baritones (Ezio Pinza, Cesare Siepi, Giorgio Tozzi, and José Van Dam) and move through the great Broadway (and sometime opera) baritones (Alfred Drake, John Raitt, Bruce Yarnell, Robert Trehy, Leslie Scott, Lawrence Winters, and John Reardon) with a nod to other opera singers who have also graced the Broadway stage (Helen Traubel, Shirley Verrett, Mona Paulee, Dorothy Sarnoff, Risë Stevens, Lee Venora, Camilla Williams, and Carol Brice). We then consider singers whose vocal abilities could easily have put them on the opera stage, had they chosen to so devote themselves (Alice Ghostley, Madeline Kahn, Barbara Cook, Florence Henderson, Judy Kaye, Lisa Vroman, Audra McDonald, Victoria Clark, Rebecca Luker, and the late Marin Mazzie). The episode also features tributes to two recently deceased divas (Gabriella Tucci and Christiane Eda-Pierre) as well as a spotlight on the gorgeous soprano Margaret Tynes, who just celebrated her 101st birthday. Craft Brew News - 05/24/19(brought to you by Brewbound.com)Texas Senate Approves Beer To-Go-Sales MeasureTexas craft brewers’ efforts to legalize beer-to-go sales is closer to passage than ever before. On Wednesday, Texas Senators unanimously passed sweeping legislation to maintain operations of the state’s alcohol regulatory body, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC), along with several changes to the state’s alcoholic beverage code, including an amendment that would permit a majority of the state’s manufacturing breweries to sell their offerings for off-premise consumption. The measure now returns to the House of Representatives for concurrence. Those familiar with the process expect the measure to easily pass through the chamber and then advance to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk.Texas is the only state in the country that does not allow beer-to-go sales at manufacturing breweries, but the state does allow brewpubs, wineries and distilleries with similar permits to sell their products for off-premise consumption. If passed, the bill would allow consumers to purchase up to one case of beer (288 fl. oz.) per day from the state’s manufacturing breweries, beginning September 1, 2019. The advancement of the beer-to-go sales bill comes a week after the Wholesale Beer Distributors of Texas (WBDT), a powerful lobbying group, agreed to back the measure. In February, the Texas Craft Brewers Guild and Texas’ other wholesaler group, the Beer Alliance of Texas, reached a “stakeholder agreement” on to-go sales. The effort to reform Texas’s direct-sales laws date back to 2015 when Dallas-based Deep Ellum Brewing sued the TABC, arguing that manufacturing breweries were at a competitive disadvantage. Deep Ellum Brewing founder John Reardon called the Senate’s passage of the beer-to-go amendment “bittersweet.”Addressing Rumors, Stone CEO Says Distribution Business is Not For SaleDespite months of rumors to the contrary, Stone Distributing Company (SDC) is not for sale.In a memo to employees last week, Stone Brewing CEO Dominic Engels sought to quash talk that the San Diego craft brewing company was attempting to offload its distribution business.“Rest assured of our commitment to SDC,” he wrote.According to Engels, Stone Distributing remains “a key piece of Stone Brewing” and a “critical” piece to the company’s success in its largest market, California. He added that Stone is “committed to the continued growth of SDC.”Indeed, Stone Distributing has grown into one of the largest craft beer wholesalers in the San Diego market. According to a March profile in San Diego Magazine, the more than two decades old wholesale business sells about 4.5 million cases of beer to more than 12,700 unique accounts annually. The business, which employs more than 300 workers, covers a 40,000-square-mile service area. Beyond selling its own brands, Stone’s portfolio includes about 45 different craft brands, including popular California craft breweries Modern Times, Russian River, and Port Brewing, as well as offerings from national brands such as Boulevard Brewing, Brooklyn Brewery, Cigar City, Oskar Blue and Victory Brewing. So where did rumors of a sale originate? Engels pointed to large wholesalers.“In times of uncertainty, fueling rumors is common practice by large wholesalers who look to undermine retailer confidence in the alleged seller,” he wrote. “Given the success of SDC as the largest independent craft beer distributor, whenever there is activity in the market, SDC is a prime target.”Study: US Beer Industry Supports More than 2 Million JobsThe U.S. beer industry was responsible for creating more than 2.19 million jobs that paid more than $101 billion in wages and benefits in 2018, according to a joint study released today by industry trade organizations the Beer Institute (BI) and the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA).The biennial “Beer Serves America” report is “a snapshot in time” of the industry’s current health and provides the industry with a tool in their advocacy efforts, NBWA president and CEO Craig Purser told Brewbound.“Part of what we’re trying to do by rolling this out is just remind people that this small industry is really the little engine that could,” he said. “It provides a lot of economic contribution and a lot of groceries on people’s tables across America.”According to the report, U.S. beer companies and wholesalers employ more than 200,000 American workers. Each of those jobs creates 31 additional full-time equivalent jobs in adjacent industries.US Lifts Aluminum and Steel Tariffs on Canada, MexicoNearly a year after imposing aluminum and steel tariffs against Canada and Mexico, the Trump administration today officially lifted levies imposed upon the two longtime trade allies. On Friday, President Donald Trump announced plans to remove the tariffs — 25 percent on foreign steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum — as the three countries work toward the passage of a renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now called the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. In turn, Canada and Mexico today lifted retaliatory tariffs against U.S. goods.Ending tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Canada and Mexico marks a significant moment for the beer industry, as about 43 percent of aluminum used by U.S. beverage companies comes from Canada, according to Washington, D.C.-based trade group the Beer Institute (BI).Nevertheless, BI president and CEO Jim McGreevy said tariffs on aluminum and steel, which amount to a $350 million annual tax on the industry, need to be completely repealed.Although President Trump has eased the tariffs on imported goods from Canada and Mexico, he has also escalated his trade war against China by increasing levies against $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. As such, the tariffs on several products being imported from China, including brewing equipment, have increased from 10 percent to 25 percent. In turn, China has threatened to raise its tariffs on $60 billion of U.S. goods beginning in June.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel.
