As major OEMs adopt Tesla's NACS connector, SAE is acting fast to bring key stakeholders together and ensure that any supplier or manufacturer will be able to use, manufacture, or deploy the NACS connector on EVs and at charging stations across North America. . The SAE J3400 NACS Task Force will enable standards and technology to work together and effectively manage pain points for consumers and scale EV production. With unique and valuable relationships with both industry and policy makers, SAE's Hybrid - EV Committee approved the creation of SAE J3400: NACS Electric Vehicle Coupler and the dedicated Task Force of subject matter experts overseeing the development of these standards. . For insight into this task force and the future of ground vehicle standards, we sat down with Christian Thiele, Director, Global Ground Vehicle Standards, SAE International, and Dr. Rodney McGee, Ph.D., P.E. . Chairman, SAE J3400 NACS Task Force, and Chief Engineer at the University of Delaware, to discuss how NACS standardization will pave the way for compatibility, interoperability, safety and consistency in the marketplace. . The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Good Monday morning! We are blessed by the voice of Michael Cirillo on the pod this week. Today we are following the continuing story of Tesla's NACS chargers, celebrating the Automotive News 40 under 40 list, and checking in on an AI lawsuit by some famous authors.Show Notes with links:Another domino has fallen in Tesla's favor as Mercedes-Benz announced that they will integrate the NACS charging connector in their EVs, beginning in 2024.The 2024 models will include a NACS adapter to the CCS connector. In 2025 and beyond, the vehicles will have a NACS port.Mercedes is also planning a charging network of more than 2500 high-power chargers in North America with some sites opening in late 2023.Volkswagen, BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Stellantis and Jaguar Land Rover are the remaining major North American OEMs who haven't adopted the new standard. The 12th 40 Under 40 Retail class has been announced by Automotive News, honoring executives, sales and service managers, a general counsel and more.Editor Dan Shine said he was struck by how much More Than Cars reminded him of the 40 Under 40 awards. “[More Than Cars] reminded me of the special stories behind so many of the people we cover… People who were born into it and those who took circuitous routes to the automotive retail industry.”Some recognizable faces for the ASOTU-verse: Dayna Kleve, Director of diversity, engagement & foundation at Walser Automotive Group, Felicia Rey, Owner loyalty manager at Lynnes Nissan CityThe list also includes Tristan Topps, a former Ms. United States, Kristina Perez-Cubas who performed at the 2007 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Keri Lanzavecchia who took 3 attempts to pass her written learner's permit and Ronnie Lowenfield who has a collection of over 2500 bottles of bourbon.Sarah Silverman and authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey are suing OpenAI and Meta, alleging copyright infringement as their AI chatbots, trained on illegally obtained datasets, have been summarizing the authors' books without permission. The authors argue that the datasets used by Meta have illicit origins, pointing out that one of the sources for its training datasets, ThePile, was assembled by a company called EleutherAI, which allegedly used content from the Bibliotik private tracker.Lawyers in the case have heard from other writers, authors, and publishers who are concerned about ChatGPT's ability to generate text similar to that found in copyrighted materials.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

FRIIIIDAAAYYY CLOSE! As we wrap up the first half of 2023 we're looking back as we talk about the next round of EV standard moves. We also talk about the retail level reception of Costco's latest crackdown on sharing memberships. As the mass adoption of Tesla's NACS charging standard has been dominating the news, the transition isn't quite as simple as you may think. Yesterday EV maker Polestar and EV motorcycle maker Verge Motorcycles announce a shift to the Tesla standardElectrify America, the largest competitor to Tesla's Supercharger network, which is majority owned by VW announced they will be adding Tesla's NACS standard to all of their almost 3,500 fast chargers by 2025 in addition to continuing to offer the current CCS standardChallenges include: Onboard software development, hardware design, incompatibility with current charging systems, charge port position, differences in charging speed, use of adapters, manufacturing modificationsTesla chargers don't have a screen and have a seamless handshakeAll Tesla charge ports are on the left rearPins in the harnesses serve different purposesTesla said in a statement: "It's always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric. More customers using the Supercharger network enables faster expansion. Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, while continuing to aggressively expand the network, so we can eventually welcome both Tesla and non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide."Costco has intensified the enforcement of its membership policy, with employees frequently asking to see shoppers' membership IDs with their photo at the self-checkout lanes drawing both cheers and jeersThe company noticed an increase in card sharing when they introduced self checkout lanes last yearCostco makes the majority of it's profits from membership feesChief financial officer Richard Galanti said during Costco's May 25 earnings call that at “some point we will” raise rates and cited inflation as a reason for waiting. “Our view right now is that we've got enough levers out there to drive business and we feel that it's incumbent upon us to be that beacon of light to our members in terms of holding them for right now,” Galanti said."I pay extra to shop somewhere to get the good prices," said Lisa Ladonski, another Illinois shopper. "It's not fair for multiple people to use one membership because let's say they all want to buy the same thing I do, they get to it and buy it and now I can't get what I need because they're taking advantage of the system."Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Rivian announced the switch to Tesla's NACS charging connectors. So now Rivian, along with Ford & GM, are about to start using Tesla superchargers. I think we can pretty much call the game for Tesla's NACS at this point, as they are truly becoming 'the standard'. Toyota is continuing to push hard for their GR line in 2024. They're bringing a TRUENO Edition GR86, the GR Corolla is coming out in vibrant Blue Flame, and Toyota's bringing us a limited 45th Anniversary Edition of the GR Supra. Last but not least, a diesel truck rolls coal on a Tesla driver, and of course he got it on video & went to social media to cry about it. Soooo we discuss.

The Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN), which is the industry association driving adoption of the Combined Charging System (CCS) and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) platforms, has come out in opposition to Ford and Tesla's recently announced agreement that will open Tesla's EV charging station network up to Ford's lineup of EVs.The deal will allow Ford's electric vehicles to use Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) Proprietary Network, which CharIN believes could result in market fragmentation.“CharIN supports global standards and defines the requirements based on the input of its international members. CCS is the global standard and therefore focuses on international interoperability and, unlike NACS, is future-proofed to support many other use cases beyond public DC fast charging,” the association said in a statement. “Early, unconsolidated announcements of changes create uncertainty in the industry and lead to investment obstacles.”CharIN also lamented the agreement's need for adaptors, at least early on, which it said could result in a negative impact on the handling of charging equipment and, therefore the user experience, coupled with an increased probability of faults, and effects on the functional safety. For the time being, Ford EVs will need an adaptor to use Tesla's chargers. But Ford CEO Jim Farley said his company will switch over to Tesla's NACS connectors for its second-generation of EVs beginning in 2025.Ford and Tesla praised their charging pact as a “huge move for our industry and for all electric customers.” Tesla has also been working on opening its charging network to automakers other than Ford. But CharIN said the industry's focus should be on CCS.“Abandoning open standards for proprietary standards will inevitably lead to further consumer confusion and delay EV adoption. CCS has gone through many years of rigorous standardization processes, which is a required activity for any new standard proposal. After a decade of collaborative work, the domestic and international EV industry has aligned around CCS,” the association said.
Standardization is important for the widespread adoption of any mass consumer technology. The Edison lamp base is an example, as is the standardized shape and form of gasoline and diesel fuel pump nozzles worldwide. Electric vehicle charging has yet to develop a single global standard, and the two largest currently are Tesla's NACS and CCS, which are used by the majority of other electric vehicle makers. Ford has taken a significant step in incorporating Tesla supercharger locations into the company's charging network for Mustang, F-150 and Transit electric vehicles.* * *Want to watch this podcast as a video?
