Join us this Sunday as we begin a new sermon series and look at the opening verses of 2 Timothy, where we see the secure hope of the gospel grounded in God's eternal counsel and will. This eternal hope springs Christians, not into a fiery frenzy of uncontrolled emotions, but into a sober, gracious, merciful, disciplined life of warmth and courage as a witness to the Kingdom of God in a fearful and insecure world. Like a stranger wandering the cold wilderness at night, Paul exhorts Timothy to remember the faith of his mother and grandmother and the gift of pastoral ministry he has been given by the Spirit and to "fan into flame" his gift and calling so that others will see and feel the warmth and security of Christ and his gospel in a fear-driven age.

Passion for Life “I do today from memory what yesterday I did in passion.” Passion – Pursues – Purpose Romans 8:28 (NIV) – And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. By: Pastor George Lehman Romans 12:11 (Ampl) - Never lag in *zeal and in *earnest endeavor; be aglow and burning with the Spirit, serving the Lord. *Ywer *To achieve something (Poog) The key issue in this 21st century is not church growth, but church health. If you and I as the church are healthy, the church will grow. Nature shows us all living things grow if they're healthy. (You don't have to make them grow). A healthy church is a growing church. A healthy Christian is a passionate Christian. The church is only as healthy as its individual members. How passionately healthy are you? The George Gallop poll did a survey in 130 countries with 13 000 people who used to go to church but don't anymore. One of the many questions: What would need to happen for you to return to church? The number 1 answer was: Passion in the lives of the members and leaders. (Let us not give people an excuse.) What people want to see is: A zeal – heartily persistent. (Tenacious / Aanhoudent) An earnest endeavour – living your confession. A person aglow and burning. (People see your light and glorify God) What people long to see is one word = PASSION! Passion means: Strong emotion. Excitement, Strong enthusiasm. Passion is the difference between enthusiastic action and simply going through the motions. Doing something because you have to! Passion is like a fire in the heart. If you don't tend to the fire, it will go out. Jeremiah 20:9 (Amp) - If I say, I will not make mention of [the Lord] or speak any more in His name, in my mind and heart it is as if there were a burning fire shut up in my bones. And I am weary of enduring and holding it in; I cannot [contain it any longer]. Verse 11 – “The Lord stands beside me like a Mighty Warrior.” As He did with: David – Goliath Daniel – Lion's Den Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego – Fiery furnace 2 Timothy1:6 (NIV) - For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. We cannot allow something so precious to become familiar, to become ordinary, or everyday or common. Sadly, how many of the older Christians have to be pushed begged and prodded to have some kind of Passion, whereas the new converts BURN with Passion, it's the older ones who throw water on their fire. The ‘passion fire' in us must be stoked, attended to and fed everyday. ‘Passion', like a fire, can be seen and felt and will always make a difference. Like a steam engine the fire must be fed otherwise it won't run When you love what you do, three things are added to you that contribute to passion. Energy – You will always have energy for what you love. If you love Jesus and the ministry, you'll care about how you live, and when you care, that generates personal energy. We often call that internal motivation. It's a fire that burns within! Joy – When you love the ministry your energy is strong, a sense of joy fills your life! This doesn't mean every day is an easy day, but the practical translation is that even on the tough days, it's worth it! This makes the majority of your work in the ministry something you truly enjoy. This continually re-ignites your passion. Improvement – It's absolutely vital to keep growing while you keep going. The goal is to get better at what you do. To keep growing in the word and in character. How about you? How are you improving? Improvement increases passion! Passion energizes the Christian life. Passion gives us focus and vision. Passion is one of the ways that God empowers our lives. Romans 12:11 (LB) - Never be lazy in your work but serve the Lord, enthusiastically. How would you describe your spiritual life? Would ‘passionate' be a word you would use? What would others say about you what about your family would they say you're Passionate about Jesus God is passionate about us; therefore, He desires we be passionate about Him. David lost his passion when circumstance came against him. What about you? Are you only on fire and passionate about God when things go well? David stirs himself with this and so should we! Psalm 42:11 (LB) - But oh my soul, don't be discouraged. Don't be upset. Expect God to act! For I know that I shall again have plenty of reason to praise Him for all that He will do. He is my help! He is my God. How to keep your passion fire burning that you can have Passion for life: #1 Prayer keeps the fire burning. Colossians 4:2 (Amp) - Be earnest and *unwearied and steadfast in your prayer (life) being (both) alert and intent in (your praying) with thanksgiving. *Not becoming tired / onvermoeit Passion comes when you spend time with God. A prayer-less person is a Passion-less person John Wesley: When asked about his ministry, “I ask God to set me on fire and let people watch me burn.” #2 Mix with passionate people. Proverbs 2:20 (LB) - Walk in the way of good men and keep the paths of the righteous. You become like those you hang around with. Do you want to know where you're headed in life just look at your closest associates? #3 Decide every day you will live with passion. No one keeps up their enthusiasm automatically. Papyrus said: Enthusiasm must be nourished with new action, new aspiration, new efforts, and new vision. (Passion brings motivation and commitment.) If you're not passionate, it's your own fault. It's because you're not applying the things you know to do. We won't be accountable for the things we didn't know and not do but for the things we knew and didn't do. LIVE WITH PASSION!

This year the VOE Network is shining the spotlight on both personal and professional development for women. Well, it happened, the governor issued a stay at the home mandate for the state of VA due to the spread of COVID-19 and I have been making the best of being home and finding the silver lining every day. This time has allowed me to really stop and reflect, to spend more time connecting to the things that matter. Such as spending time with family, trying out new recipes, more long walks in the park, more time in the presence of my Life source (God). Something like this can really mess with our mental health and produce unwanted anxiety. But we need to pause and remember what God said in His word in 2 Timothy1:7 “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind”

Genesis 3:7-10 After the fall, man’s relationship with God was marred with fear. Humans are born with two innate fears -- the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Maybe fear of God and people is also innate? Two Extreme Examples 1 Samuel 9:2 Saul was taller than any of the people. 18-21 He did not think highly of himself. 10:9 God changed his heart; however, he still battled with an inferiority complex. 10:20-24 Why was he hiding? 15: 15:18-24 We have often seen in our day how a political leader, because of fear of the people, will do that which is not right. We see this in Christian leaders also who compromise God’s Word to appease the people because of fear. Many religious organizations have problems because of the fear of losing people or to influence better attendance. After he sinned, the rest of his life he was jealous of David to extent of murder. Galatians 2:11-14 Peter was afraid of James; fear can make cowards of us all. Our concern is not controlling our fears. Often people say, “You have to learn to live with your fears,” but the Scriptures teach us to conquer fear. Different positive thinking classes, seminars, and books teach how to control fear so you can live with it. However, when we believe and act on God’s Word, we will be released from the bondage of fear. 2 Timothy1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity [fear], but of power and love and discipline [KJV sound mind, ESV self-control]. POWER John 20:19 Hiding for fear of the Jews who three days earlier crucified Jesus. Acts 1:8; 4:5-12; 5:27-32 The holy spirit eliminated the fear. Our faith and the relationship we have with God and Christ holds a decisive factor in relating with people. LOVE Romans 8:14-16; 29-39 1 John 4:18-21 Perfect love casts out fear. All people want to be wanted, love to be loved; die to self and think of the other. Sound mind, self-control Philippians 4:6-10; 1 Corinthians 10:13 He was in prison during the sunset years of his life contemplating whether he should live or die, yet he had no fear. Why did he have confidence, trust, and faith? He prayed and controlled his thinking to focus on scriptural verities.
How not to be a Chocolate Christian or How to change Ch-rch to Church! Have you ever noticed that chocolate melts under pressure & heat? If you haven't, take a piece of chocolate and hold it between your fingers! It will soon melt! If you are a Christian, you need to be active in your local church so that you don't melt under pressure and you will remain firm in your faith! Otherwise you will be a chocolate Christian who easily gives up under the stress and pressure of every day life!At a church local to where you live, you are needed regardless of who you are!Perhaps this is you? Interested observer but not a committed Christian Not bothered Not good enough Just want to be left alone Don't know how to be involved Don't know why being involved is important Too busy But why should you be involved? Why? You have talents to be used!! When Jesus said to His apostles "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." (John 14:12), it was through the promised Holy Spirit (John 14:17), and the impartation of Spiritual Gifts that His words were fulfilled. The reason that the Holy Spirit imparts spiritual gifts to Christians is so that the body of Christ is built up (Ephesians 4:12), for the common good of the church (1Corinthians 12:7, 14:12) and "so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 4:12). These three reasons signify that God wants Christians to be active in service and not still like stagnant water. That is why we have been given gifts and if these gifts are not used for God's purposes, then they are utterly useless and meaningless. And the gifts are not just the supposedly spectacular gifts but also the supposedly mundane! Cleaning is as much a spiritual gift as preaching is! As we are not to neglect our gifts, or let other Christians neglect their gifts, we are to fan the gifts into flame (2 Timothy1:6). Much like blowing on embers and stirring them up will restart the flames of a fire! To do this, as Christians, we are to employ the gifts faithfully and by asking God to continue their development, strengthening and for opportunities to use them! Seek gifts that build up others, commands Paul (1 Corinthians 14:1-12). Ask God faithfully for gifts that give opportunity for service to God and others! Why? We are dependent on each other As Christians, we are dependent upon each other, just as one part of the human body has dependence on another part. That is why we serve each other and use the gifts generously given by God. As all Christians have gifts, we have a responsibility to discover and develop them (1 Timothy 4:14)! God has called Christians and equipped them with spiritual gifts, and they are not to be neglected! You are a member of the body of Jesus Christ the church! If you are not being active that means the Church body is affected aversely! Its like a part of your body failing to do as it should! Why? Improve your serve! They are opportunities for Christians to serve other people. Some gifts like teaching, helping or leadership quite possibly are enhancements of natural abilities whilst others like faith, healing and miracles are from the Spirit's empowerment alone.In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), Jesus intimates that those who follow Him, will be judged according to all that they have been given stewardship of! This includes things such as Spiritual Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1-10), acts of service (Galatians 5:13) and material possessions (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)! These are used to accomplish three other items of Stewardship: mission, message and people. Why? To follow Jesus The Christian life is not to be static or inactive - it was never meant to be! The Christian life is to be dynamic! It is to be active. The word servant is key in Scripture. It is used at least 500 times in its various derivatives. When a Christian serves, God's honour is released. This is done because service shows the beauty and glory of Jesus Christ to those being served and to those watching. That is to be our motive for service. Serving is never to be about what you and I can get out of it. When that is the motive, God is not glorified. God's glory, honour and supremacy are to be the goal of a Christian's life. Spiritual growth comes from serving rather than being served. This is because what ever is given in service of God and others, your faith grows and Jesus Christ gives back even more. Jesus speaking in Matthew 25:15-30 tells of the rewards for faithful service and the penalties for being faithless. Serving others is a sign that you are trusting in and having faith in God. It's a visible aspect of your invisible faith. Service is the outward expression of your inner beliefs. Serving is an outward expression of your inner faith - an external working out of your inner salvation. Serving God and others is the mark of a spiritually mature (or spiritually maturing) Christian and through service, the greatest servant of all, Jesus Christ, is reflected in our lives. "For Jesus Christ, came to serve and give his very life for others" (Mark 10:45). As Christians we are to be as Jesus Christ (Romans 8:28; Philippians 2:5) and to serve. Yet if we are honest, we sometimes feel incapable, just as Moses did (Exodus 3). When the church is built up, unity will inevitably prevail and be built up. GO! So if you find you are currently inactive in your local church, then please go and make yourself available to serve there! Ask your pastor or church leader how you can help out! By doing so, and submitting yourself to the Holy Spirit who indwells you, the lives of other people could be changed for God's greater glory because of your acts of service and worship.
