Een dag eerder was hij nog in Hoek waar het jubileum werd gevierd en waar de organisatie nog een bijzonder iemand wist te traceren. Ook werden er hele ‘speciale’ keepershandschoenen geveild voor een ‘spotprijs’. Tot slot keek Van der Hooft op maandag de ongelukkige interland van Jan Paul van Hecke terug, met een notitieblok in de hand. Uit welke hoek valt de vólgende grote economische misère vandaan? Sinds we in 2008 de kredietcrisis over ons afriepen, zijn we eigenlijk voortdurend op ons qui vive, beducht voor een nieuwe zwarte zwaan. Een ding is zeker, zegt macro-econoom Edin Mujagic: het volgende grote probleem komt eigenlijk nooit uit de hoek waar de vórige crisis vandaan kwam. ‘Maar het ontslaat je niet van de verplichting ermee bezig te zijn, want het doet er wel degelijk toe.’ Momenteel lijkt de verwachting gerechtvaardigd dat de volgende zwarte zwaan uit de hoek van de staatsschulden komt, zegt Mujagic. Daar gaat het immers wel vaak over, de laatste tijd. ‘Overal zijn ze hoog en stijgend en weinig landen doen er eigenlijk echt iets aan. Maar ik kwam een interessante paper tegen van drie economen over juist dit thema. In aflevering 34 van de PZC Voetbal Podcast is Hoek-trainer Gérard de Nooijer te gast. Samen met presentator Juriën Dam en sportjournalist Jan Dagevos spreekt hij over de behaalde titel in de derde divisie. Ook wordt er gebeld met nog een andere kampioenstrainer. In aflevering 31 van de PZC Voetbal Podcast komt Len Eversdijk vertellen over zijn terugkeer als voetballer op de Zeeuwse velden. Chef-sport Barry van der Hooft en presentator Juriën Dam bezetten de andere stoelen aan tafel.Eversdijk maakte in het verleden indruk bij Groene Ster Vlissingen als ‘chef standaardsituaties’. Na een aantal jaren te zijn gestopt als voetballer en geroken te hebben aan het trainersvak gaat hij volgend seizoen als 34-jarige terugkeren als speler bij zijn jeugdliefde RCS. De aanvaller voetbalt nu nog in een lager elftal bij Walcheren, als er tenminste niet te veel ganzenpoep op het veld ligt zoals afgelopen zaterdag het geval was.Ook de mooiste momenten die zijn vriendschap met profvoetballer Daley Blind opleverden passeren de revue, zoals de befaamde 5-1 overwinning op Spanje op het WK 2014 in Brazilië. Ook een andere vriend van Eversdijk had het in zich om het ver te schoppen. Diegene redde het niet, maar Eversdijk zet hem wel in zijn favoriete vier-tegen-vier-elftal. In Dordrecht zet verandergroep Woonregels zich actief in voor betere regelgeving rondom dakloosheid. Onlangs organiseerden zij het evenement Voorbij Dakloosheid in theater Kunstmin, waar ervaringsverhalen, frustraties en oplossingen gedeeld werden.Opkomen voor mensen met (on)erkende urgentie"Wij proberen op te komen voor iedereen met een woonurgentie of die dat naar onze mening zou moeten hebben," vertelt Jean-Paul Broekhuizen, lid van Woonregels.De acties van de groep worden overwegend positief ontvangen. "We organiseren kleine acties die mensen aan het denken zetten," legt Jessica Bolk uit. "Zoals tijdens oud en nieuw, toen we de ‘sokkenloop' deden. We liepen op sokken door de stad, omdat wij geen voordeur hebben waar we onze schoenen uit kunnen doen." Volgens Jessica geven zulke acties mensen inzicht in hoe het is om zonder thuis te leven. "Veel mensen snappen dan niet hoe je toch positief kunt blijven, maar dat is precies wat we proberen te laten zien."De avond in Kunstmin was voor Jessica emotioneel. "Mijn kinderen waren erbij en vielen tijdens de voorstelling in slaap. Iemand vroeg zich af hoe ik dat voor elkaar krijg. Maar ik zorg daar niet bewust voor. Mijn kinderen zijn eraan gewend om overal te slapen, omdat we geen vaste plek hebben."Kritiek op gemeentelijk beleidVoor Jean-Paul was het een zware avond. "Het deed pijn om te horen wat een aanwezige wethouder zei. Hij stelde dat hij meer geld wil steken in opvang, maar dan ben je al te laat. En hij zei dat daklozen geen voorrang kunnen krijgen boven jongvolwassenen die nog thuis wonen. Dat klinkt voor mij als iemand die alleen zijn zetels wil behouden."Wel was hij enthousiast over het spel Van het kastje naar de muur, dat tijdens het evenement werd gespeeld. "Daarin moet je proberen om vanaf het moment dat je dakloos raakt, binnen 15 minuten opvang te regelen. Mensen kwamen erachter hoe moeilijk dat eigenlijk is. In werkelijkheid beland je vaak alleen, ongewassen en gestigmatiseerd in een park."Dakloosheid kent vele gezichtenJessica benadrukt dat het beeld dat mensen hebben van daklozen vaak niet klopt. "Men denkt al snel aan een man met een baard en een biertje in een park. Maar iedereen kan dakloos raken. Daarom is maatwerk in hulp noodzakelijk, geen one-size-fits-all-aanpak."Volgens Woonregels moet de gemeente in actie komen. "Ze moeten hun beloftes nakomen. Niet alleen ja zeggen, maar ook ja doen," zegt Jessica vastberaden.Daklozen helpen iemand… dakloos te worden?Onlangs hielpen de leden iemand verhuizen, met een bijzonder resultaat. "We hebben hem geholpen om dakloos te worden," vertelt Jessica met een cynische ondertoon. Jean-Paul nuanceert: "Hij had een dak boven zijn hoofd en verwarming in de winter. Nu is hij veilig dakloos. Het is eigenlijk absurd dat wij, als daklozen, iemand dakloos hebben gemaakt. Dordrecht is echt een gekke stad."Meer woningen in plaats van meer zorgVolgens Mirjam van den Hoek, ook lid van Woonregels en mede-initiatiefnemer, ligt het probleem niet bij de zorg, maar bij het woningtekort. "Als je last hebt van je voeten omdat je geen schoenen hebt, heb je geen pleisters nodig, maar schoenen," zegt ze treffend.Jessica vult aan: "De communicatie tussen de gemeente en daklozen is minimaal. We gaan zelf naar de fracties toe. Waarom komen zij niet naar ons? Ze zouden eens echt met ons in gesprek moeten gaan."Hoop ondanks allesMirjam blijft ondanks alles hoopvol. "Het is bijzonder dat we het vertrouwen nog niet zijn verloren. We hebben elkaar," zegt ze. Jessica knikt instemmend: "En we hebben niets meer te verliezen." Jean-Paul voegt daaraan toe: "Ik denk dat het voor ons eigenlijk niet erger kan. Een dak boven je hoofd is een grondrecht, maar daar wordt op dit moment onvoldoende werk van gemaakt."

De Watertoren van Dirksland, een iconisch monument, heefteen grondige restauratie ondergaan, gefinancierd door de gemeente en provincie. De Stichting Watertoren Dirksland, onder leiding van voorzitter Aad van den Hoek en penningmeester Jan Buth, werkt nu aan het creëren van eenrepresentatieve uitstraling voor de toren. Ondanks beperkte middelen en de uitdagingen van het gebouw, zijn er plannen om de toren toegankelijker te maken, met het streven naar een expositie en het behouden van de historische waarde. Het doel is om het unieke uitzicht vanaf de toren voor toekomstige generaties te bewaren, hoewel dit gepaard gaat met aanzienlijke kosten en veiligheidsmaatregelen.

Aflevering 25 van de PZC Voetbal Podcast staat grotendeels in het teken van de heerlijke interlands die Arnemuidenaar Jan Paul van Hecke speelde met Oranje. Chef-sport Barry van der Hooft was er bij in De Kuip en vertelt erover. Ook PZC-journalist Jan Dagevos deelt zijn voetbalweetjes met presentator Juriën Dam. Van der Hooft was zondagavond ‘helemaal hyper’ van het voetbal wat Nederland en Spanje op de mat brachten. Donderdagavond was hij zelf in De Kuip aanwezig (hij sprak zelfs nog met Virgil over Van Hecke) en merkte dat er voorafgaand nog niet de echte overtuiging rond Van Hecke te bespeuren viel bij het aanwezige journaille. Zijn idee is dat dit standpunt na het Spaanse tweeluik compleet anders is. Van der Hooft: ,,Jan Paul heeft zijn trouwdatum na de interlands gepland. Dat lijkt me heel verstandig.” Ook komt de opvallende blessure van Kloetinge-speler Gianni Tiebosch ter sprake, die hij op de ochtend van de wedstrijd opliep tijdens het voetballen met zijn zoontje. Ook gaat het over de zure middag van Hoek, dat nu met Noah Noah Aelterman echt wel de vervanger van Rik Impens lijkt te hebben binnengehaald, zo is Van der Hooft vrij stellig. In aflevering 21 van de PZC Voetbal Podcast schuiven de PZC-journalisten Barry van der Hooft en Jan Dagevos aan. With that unadulterated self adulation out of the way, back to 1853. As you know, this series constantly shuffles between world events of the time, and incidents and events in southern Africa. In China the Taiping Rebellion rolled on— a civil war between the Manchu-led Qing dynasty and the Hakka-led Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The war had started in 1850 and would only end in 1864. It's believed between 20 and 30 million Chinese died in this war, about the same number who died in World War One. By comparison, the 8th Frontier War which had just ended in the eastern Cape was trifling - unless of course you were one of the 16 000 amaXhosa or 1400 of the British soldiers and settlers who died. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom was dreamed up by a prophet just like the 8th Frontier War. In the southern African case, Mlanjeni had fused Christian and amaXhosa cosmology into a generated a cult-like following. In China it was Hong Xiuquan, an ethnic Hakka man who had proclaimed himself to be the brother of Jesus Christ and who led the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Also in 1853, the first passenger railway in India began running between Bombay or Mumbai as it's now known, and Thana was inaugurated in 1853. In the same year, Manchester was granted city status in the UK, and the first public aquarium opened in London. Yellow Fever killed 8 000 Americans in New Orleans, that's one reason why we get Yellow Fever shots — because yes folks — it kills you as quickly as a vaccine hesitant with spasmodic dysphonia. The Swiss watch company Tissot was founded in 1853 and soon the biggest market for Tisso watches, in those days was … Russia. Ironic, considering Russia and a host of countries had gone to war in the Crimea. A Time to die. The first potato chips, or chips as we call it, were prepared and sold by George Crum in New York. Christian Doppler the Austrian mathematician a physicist died in 1853, famous for his discovery that the observed frequency of a wave depends on the relative speed of the source and the observer. It's called the doppler Effect. Some could argue that there is a doppler effect in historical views, just as the perceived pitch of a wave changes with movement, historical events are viewed differently depending on the distance in time from the event. To stretch this metaphor further, perception is influenced by position, shaped by cultural, geographical and ideological positions. The closer you are to the event, the more intense it is. Thus, the Historical Doppler Effect. The Crimean War kicked off in October 1853. Word of these events, of course, were rippling across the planet, sometimes taking months to reach the furtherest corners. The Boers in South Africa for example were acutely aware of the Crimean war, and that their enemy the English were involved.

We're into an extremely tough time in our past, 1851, and about to hear about the struggle for control of an area of the Amatolas that the Boers had named Waterkloof - better known by local amaXhosa as Mtontsi. It was a case of jungle warfare as you're going to hear. The area of operation was only 40 square kilometers and yet it remained out of Britains control for most of the 8th Frontier War. If you have an old steam driven hard copy map of the area, or can fire up your trusty digital device of choice, go to Google maps and focus on the area between the Kat and Koenap Rivers, to the west of the town of kwaMaqoma which used to be known as Fort Beaufort. Just to add a bit of post-modern spice here, nearby Cookhouse wind Farm is one of the largest in South Africa on the high ridge east of the Great Fish River. The Waterkloof itself is a deep, narrow valley, six kilometres long, bounded by the Kroomie Heights to the south and to the north by a second series of majestic ridges falling away to a rolling plateau. Running roughly south-east and open at its western side, it comes to a head in a high, grassy tableland fringed with bushes and gigantic trees. To the east, this tableland falls away into another deep, heavily-forested gorge, known as Fuller's Hoek. It was in this gorge, in a gigantic overhanging cave of a type that proliferates in the area, that amaNqika chief Maqoma had his headquarters. The plateau is linked to the Kroomie by a narrow ridge and where this joins the plateau is a 'horseshoe-shaped flat', approximately a square kilometre in area and fringed by towering forests. In due course it would be named 'Mount Misery' by the British troops who fought in or near there. In the mountain fastnesses above, there are two reserves today - Mpofu and Fort Fordyce. Here you'll still find the Chacma baboon, black wildebeest on the escarpment, blue duiker, mountain reedbuck. If you're lucky you'll spot the Cape Parrot, and eagles, while the playful Knysna Loeries abound. The Caracal is the largest predator there these days, but in the past leopards would stalk here - eating a snack of rock dassie. By February 1851 the bitterness of the 8th Frontier War was becoming more evident with descriptions of British troops being captured and tortured to death by the amaXhosa. Settlers and regular troops marched through the Thyumie valley in February in revenge, burning everything and carrying a flag which had the word “Extermination” emblazoned for all the see. Governor Sir Harry Smith had advocated extermination of the amaXhosa and the Khoekhoe in letters and conversations - he was panikcing besieged in King Williams Town and chaos was the order of the day - the governor was lashing out. No quarter was being given by either side - man against man. Somerset was stung into action. On 7th September he sent a large patrol into the Waterkloof, 600 men from the 74th Highland Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Fordyce. The man who was to give both his name and his life to these mountains.
