TRUE HOUSE STORIES® W/ BOBBY SHAW # 103 Bobby Shaw's start in dance music began in 1977 as a bartender in the highly successful discotheque, The Barefoot Boy. There he became close friends with DJ Tony Smith and was fortunate to experience and hear the likes of disc jockeys Roy Thode, Vince Michaels, Larry Sanders, and Wayne Scott, to name a few. During this tenure, he also got to know dance promoters such as Ray Caviano, Ken Friedman, Billy Smith, Alan Mamber, Starr Arning, and Rita Heyer. In 1978, Shaw's passion for music led him to seek a job within the dance community and he was able to land a mail room position for Ray Caviano at TK Records. While at the label, Shaw assisted on notable acts as Voyage, Peter Brown, The Ritchie Family, T Connection, Beautiful Bend, KC and The Sunshine Band, Jimmy "Bo" Horne, Anita Ward, and Bobby Caldwell.Bobby's old mentor, Ray Caviano, was rewarded with a custom dance label, RFC Records, which was distributed through Warner Bros. Records and Shaw joined him in 1979 as a regional promotion person. Although Caviano was later dismissed from his role, Shaw stayed on at WB until 1984. While there, he promoted future dance music classics from Gino Soccio, Change, Kraftwerk, Laid Back (discovering and mixing the classic 12" White Horse), The Time, Prince, Chaka Khan, Patti Austin, Janice McClain, Stargard, Talking Heads, and the Tom Tom Club. Perhaps most noteworthy though was his relationship with Madonna as he helped guide her through the early stages of her career with Michael Rosenblatt and Mark Kamins. Shaw helped set up Madonna's early club gigs and was her promotion person for the early masterpieces Everybody, Physical Attraction, Holiday, and Burning Up. In 1984, MCA Records' executives Richard Palmese and Jheryl Busby took notice of Shaw's work at Warner Brothers and they created a national dance music promotion manager's position for him. He remained there until 1998 and during that time span he became the first corporate vice president of dance music promotion at any label. Shaw's experience was the backbone for bringing such luminaries as Elton John, Patti LaBelle, Dan Hartman, Bronski Beat, New Edition, Stephanie Mills, Fine Young Cannibals, The Jets, Londonbeat, Colonel Abrams, and Tracy Lords to the dance floors of the world. In addition, Shaw became the only record company executive to ever win the AIR competition as he took that honor in 1986. In 1999, Shaw started his own promotion company, Bobby Shaw Promotions and he is doing it still today. As well he is involved with a Weekly Twitch Show under the name BobbyPromo. His shows are quite delightful and each show is like a history lesson when you listen to the music he chooses and you experience watching him.

What the Riff?!?

Alright, folks, break out your platform shoes and your dance clothes, because What the Riff is headed down to the club!  KC and the Sunshine Band was playing in all the disco dance studios in 1977, but they were particularly prominent in the Miami market, near their home town of Hialeah, Florida.  We're riffing on Part 3, unexpectedly the fourth studio album from the group (though there was a bit of a reset with their second album being self-titled and the first album having only moderate success).Harry Wayne Casey was a part time employee at TK Records in Hialeah when he formed the band, originally called KC & the Sunshine Junkanoo Band.  Casey worked with Richard Finch, engineer for TK Records, to produce the albums, including Part 3.  Additional musicians joined, including Jerome Smith on guitar, Robert Johnson on drums, and numerous others to complete the horn section.  KC and the Sunshine Band would find a virtuous cycle, as Casey and Finch would write songs inspired by what they saw at the discos, then would see their songs played at those same clubs.KC and the Sunshine Band were often featured as guests on FM pop powerhouse Y-100, and this exposure contributed to their success.  The first big hit was their second and self-titled album released in 1975, which produced the hits “Get Down Tonight” and “That's the Way (I Like It)”  Part 3 would continue their funk/disco dominance.  The band would continue to see success through their sixth studio album released in 1979.  Shortly thereafter styles would change, and the disco sound would not continue into the 1980's.  That, and a falling out between Casey and Finch would end the band for a while.KC and the Sunshine Band has seen a resurgence with the popularity of retro bands, and still tours today.  Wrap Your Arms Around MeThe fifth single from the album is a little bit of a deeper cut and features the horns prominently with a funky groove.(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your BootyYou can't go wrong with a dance song that tells you to shake your booty!  Although this first single from the album was number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Soul Singles Chart, there was some controversy attached to it, with speculation that it had a stronger sexual connotation than simply dancing.I'm Your Boogie ManThis song written by Casey and Finch also hit number 1 on the Hot 100.  Finch said that the song was written about a DJ named Robert W. Walker, who was the first to play their song “Get Down Tonight.” Keep It Comin' LoveA little softer than some, this song nevertheless was still successful.  However, it only reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, being kept out of the number 1 slot by Meco's “Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band,” and the big hit of the 70's, Debbie Boone's “You Light Up My Life.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the television series “Fantasy Island”Headlined by Ricardo Montalban as Mr. Roarke and Herve Villechaize as his right hand man, Tattoo, this show would feature a stream of actors and actresses playing one-off characters chasing their dreams on the island. STAFF PICKS:Isn't She Lovely by Stevie WonderBruce leads off the staff picks with what feel is one of the most positive songs you will ever hear.  Wonder celebrates the birth of his daughter Aisha Morris on this song that opens side three of his double album, “Songs in the Key of Life.”  All instrumentation in the song is played by Wonder except for a few of the keyboard parts which were furnished by Greg Phillganes. Hard Luck Woman  by KissRob's staff pick sounds a lot like Rod Stewart for good reason — it was written by Paul Stanley for Stewart.  Though Stanley thought it sounded like “You Wear It Well,” his band Kiss decided it would be a good follow up to their successful ballad, “Beth.”  The song made it to 15 on the charts, and is a rare ballad.  Drummer Peter Criss sings lead on this song, as he did on “Beth.”Red by Sammy HagarWayne brings us the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar, with an anthem off his second solo album.  This is also the album and song which gave him the name “the Red Rocker.”  A fan called him the Red Rocker when getting a picture, and Hagar liked the name.  The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios.I Never Cry by Alice CooperBrian wraps up the staff picks with a mellow ballad from the not-normally mellow Alice Cooper.  This is from the album “Alice Cooper Goes to Hell,” a concept album inspired by his visit to rehab.  Many of his fans were disappointed with this softer side of Cooper, but his performances never suffered for the presence of a ballad or two.     COMEDY TRACK:In The Mood by Henhouse Five Plus TooIt appears that we need to close this podcast out before it goes to the birds!

Hosts: Gary Baca & Lalo Alcaraz KPFK August 2017 Bobby Caldwell Biography Bobby Caldwell was born in Manhattan but grew up in Miami. His mother sold real estate, and one of her clients was reggae singer Bob Marley; Caldwell and Marley became friends. Growing up in Miami exposed Caldwell to a variety of music, such as Haitian, Latin, reggae, and R&B. He grew up listening to the music of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. When he was 12, Caldwell started playing piano and guitar. He was drawn to rock and roll, as well as jazz and rhythm and blues. At 17, he worked with his band in Las Vegas then moved to Los Angeles. He signed with TK Records in Miami. In 1978, after songs for his first album were recorded, executives told Caldwell they enjoyed the album but thought it was lacking a hit. Caldwell returned to the studio for two days and wrote "What You Won't Do for Love". TK was mainly an R&B label popular among African American listeners. Executives at the label wanted to conceal the fact that Caldwell was white, so they kept his face off the album cover. When he toured with Natalie Cole to support the album, most of the audience was black, and many were surprised that he turned out to be white. "What You Won't Do for Love" reached the top ten on the Billboard magazine Pop (No. 9) R&B (No. 6), and Adult Contemporary (No. 10) charts. The song has been covered, remade, and sampled many times. Caldwell remade it in 1998. It was covered by Go West, Phyllis Hyman, and Boyz II Men, and has been sampled by Tupac Shakur. It was also covered by Elliott Yamin during the fifth season of American Idol in 2006. The 1980 track "Open Your Eyes" was sampled by J Dilla on Common's "The Light" from his 2000 album "Like Water For Chocolate". Techno! That’s the sound of Cortechs. It did not take long until the unique sound of Cortechs became attention in the global underground scene of techno music. After multiple releases on various prestigious labels, Cortechs earned his rightful position among the most important producers and performers of the german underground techno movement. With his first album "The End Justifies The Means" which was released on his regular label "Machine Box", Cortechs was able to give his sound a very personal touch and gather enough raw materials to use and intuitively play with in his exquisite Ableton Live sets. Having been on tour through Germany a lot of times, he always found inspiration for producing new sounds. This new material was also the basis for upcoming projects like the "Last 13 EP" released on Steil or the collaboration with Hackler & Kuch which was released on De-Konstrukt. With remixes for Angy Kore, Niereich, Morgan Tomas, Cortechs has become an important and much requested remixer in the scene. In 2013 even more live gigs came around. This automatically resulted in much new material again which directly found ist way into his ableton sessions . Bands like Mode Selector , or Technotronic influenced my growing dependence on electronic music. Early on I had a growing desire to go to parties to techno parties , and to celebrate . DJs such as Jeff Mills, Chris Liebing , Sven Väth, and Torsten Kanzler took me under her spell. So the madness began . I have to put Reloop RP 1000 with belt drive turntables and a mixer the foundation. The weekend consisted of parties and between I conducted hour mix sessions on my record player at home . I had about 5-10 friends at this time were all subjected to this marathon is in my apartment. Another cornerstone of my career Torsten Kanzler and his label TK Records , Killaz & Error Records came into my life , from there it went ahead and correct my options were given in Tresor Berlin Club , at Nature One , Summer Spirit , Kazantip , Area61 , Metronome Club Berlin , and in many more clubs to play. My fan base grew and grew .... _______________________ DOM1 aka Diarmaid O Meara http://www.8bitbookings.com/ http://www.diarmaidomeara.com/ http://www.gobsmackedrecords.com/ http://www.facebook.com/diarmaidomeara1 http://www.soundcloud.com/diarmaidomeara Firmly planting himself in a front seat in the international Techno scene, be it through critically successful and supported tracks, complicated and intense three turntable performances, or his far reaching Gobsmacked brand and label... the Irish three deck techno peddler, Diarmaid O Meara, is a name that has quite rightly been etched into the minds of a sizeable and ever growing chunk of Europe’s even more sizeable and ever growing Techno cult. This alongside endless production work, collaborations, a hectic gigging schedule, and a uniquely intense, energetic, and entertaining style of three turntable techno mash up sets, has placed Diarmaid up there with his peers as one of the best in his field to emerge in recent years. As one of the UK and Irelands busier techno producers and releasers, his collaborations and remixes to date include hero’s like A.Paul, Robert Armani, Mike Humphries, Space DJz, Patrick DSP, Vegim, Niereich, Go!Diva, Luke Creed etc., on labels including Gobsmacked, Potential, Mastertraxx, Nachtstrom Schallplatten, Naked Lunch etc. His 2010 album “Structured Noise” was nominated for Best Album 2010 and his label Gobsmacked for Best Label multiple times in the Irish dance Music Awards. Constantly following on these successes with a broad spectrum of projects constantly on the horizon, numerous and continuous upcoming releases across some of the genre’s finest labels, not to mention his own Gobsmacked label, which is close to celebrating its 100th release… Diarmaid’s name will keep appearing regularly in the statutes techno as he pushes the boundaries of noise and ingenuity in the production, performance, and promotion of electronic music. _____________________________ Subscribe to Banging Techno Sets on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/banging-techno-sets/id1453474812?mt=2
