This week on The Metro, Rev Jeff Ivins brings you more tunes for your time warp to the 1980s with: A-Ha, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Suzanne Vega, Power Station, Roxette, Marshall Crenshaw, Great Buildings, Any Trouble, The Bangles, Romeo Void, Belouis Some, Fine Young Cannibals, Kid Creole & the Coconuts, Nena, Let's Active, and finishing up with Graham Parker.
U2 released a part-live, part studio album in October 1988 called Rattle and Hum. This album accompanied a filmed “Rockumentary” of the band which was filmed in Denver and Arizona. Originally intended to be entitled “U2 in the Americas,” the album and film instead take their name from lyrics in the song “Bullet the Blue Sky' from their album “The Joshua Tree.” Studio sessions for Rattle and Hum included time at Sun Studio in Memphis, and include collaborations with other musicians including Bob Dylan and B.B. King. The intent of Rattle and Hum was to explore more American blues rock, and folk, and roots music of the 50's and 60's, and includes both original and cover songs. Critics were divided on the album at the time of its release. Some felt that U2 was not celebrating blues rock and artists as much as they were attempting to insert themselves into higher echelons of rock celebrity. Over time the criticisms of egotism would fade, as U2 has indeed proven to be a major force in the Rock pantheon. In retrospect, both Bono and The Edge have found Rattle and Hum to be a bit of a side excursion for the band, more of a “scrapbook” than a true direction. The new direction of U2 would be set beginning with their next studio album, “Achtung Baby” in 1991. Regardless, Rattle and Hum is a great album, well worth a listen. The collaboration with other artists is worth special attention, as is its examination of the way that modern rock finds its roots in the delta blues.Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Wayne, while Rob brings us this hybrid album for today's podcast.Angel of HarlemThe second single from the album is an original studio release which was written as an homage to Billie Holiday. Songwriting took place during the tour for ”The Joshua Tree,” and the lyrics take inspiration form various landmarks around New York City. The track reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 9 on the UK Singles chart. When Love Comes to TownRecorded in Sun Studios, this U2 original song features collaboration with blues guitarist B.B. King. Live performances included B.B. King and his band during the “Lovetown Tour” in 1989. U2 would discontinue playing the song in concert over time, but revived it in 2015 as a tribute to B.B. King after his death. King plays lead on this song written by The Edge, who takes on rhythm guitar for this track. All Along the WatchtowerThis live cover is of a song written by Bob Dylan and made famous by Jimi Hendrix. The lyrics are of a conversation between a joker and a thief, and several lines echo lines of scripture from the book of Isaiah in the Bible. U2 performed this live cover in San Francisco at the “Save The Yuppie Free Concert.” Some of the lyrics were altered, which irritated Dylan. Pride (In the Name of Love)A live version of the studio song from the 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire, this was recorded in Denver. The popularity of this song can be heard in the audience call-and-response. The lyrics were inspired by elements of the civil rights movement, particularly the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Iko Iko by The Belle Stars (from the motion picture “Rain Man”)Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman turned in stellar performances in this dramatic film exploring autism. STAFF PICKS:Kiss by Art of Noise featuring Tom JonesBruce leads off the staff picks with a cover of a Prince song performed by an unusual pairing of art rock group the Art of Noise with Vegas crooner Tom Jones. This became the biggest hit for the Art of Noise to that point, reaching number 5 on the UK charts and number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young CannibalsLynch brings us the most successful single from the British pop trio, off their second and final album, “The Raw & the Cooked.” The band formed from two previous bands, one Ska, and one Punk. The track was composed at Prince's Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis.Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Great WhiteGreg features a rocker. Great White covered a song originally written and performed by Ian Hunter in 1975. This song went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Great White had a more blues-oriented sound than many of the hair metal bands of the late 80's. Lead singer Jack Russell passed after a battle with Lewy body dementia in August 2024.What I Am by Edie Brickell & New BohemiansRob closes out the staff picks with the signature song off Edie Brickell & New Bohemians' debut album, "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars." The inspiration for the song was Brickell's frustration with the dogma exhibited in a world religions class in college. Brickell would meet her husband and fellow musician, Paul Simon, when she performed this song on Saturday Night Live. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Sunset Road by Bela Fleck & the FlecktonesThis jazz fusion piece with an unusual banjo lead was on the group's debut album, and takes us out for this episode. Dave and Milt take listeners back to the week ending April 8, 1989, dissecting the Billboard Top 10 hits from that time. They provide insights, critiques, and contextual tidbits about each song, including highlights like 'Funky Cold Medina' by Tone Loc, 'Stand' by R.E.M., 'Like a Prayer' by Madonna, and 'The Look' by Roxette. Throughout the episode, they reminisce about personal and pop culture moments, celebrate special episodes, and interact with listener mail. The episode wraps up with the infamous Play Date quiz focusing on songs about insanity, and the hosts' substitution segment where they replace one song from the Top 10 with an underappreciated track from the same week. Toph leads the discussion and review of Fine Young Cannibals' 1989 album ‘The Raw & The Cooked' – including, as always, albums + songs on our radar and much more! Stop the presses...we did two episodes in 8 days! Which makes us proud as pie. Tune in to hear the boys discuss the sweet sultry (I guess) voice of Roland Gift, provide the story of how this "spin off" band came about, and play the strangest game in the history of 2T&A. Will this episode be raw? Will it be cooked? Will it be a Gift? Will it be a good thing? Will we drive you crazy? Will you be satisfied? Or will you take what you can get? Regardless -- don't look back, and give episode 92 a listen. It's ok. It's alright.

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! In case you hadn't noticed, we love a good cover version! This episode, we're looking at covers - staples, covers from strange sources, and some songs that have had a LOT of covers, including a bunch of covers of Bowie's “Heroes”. Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is “Is This It?” by The Strokes. This punk/Britpop-influenced album got rave reviews on release in 2001 from Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, and New Musical Express. We're not convinced. In Knockin' on Heaven's Door, we mourn the loss of Wayne Osmond (of the Osmond Brothers), Chad Morgan, the Aussie country great, and Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul and Mary. We hope they get to sing a rousing chorus of “Puff the Magic Dragon together. As usual, there's heaps of fun. Enjoy!! Robin Millar doesn't let anything hold him back. The man is blind, and yet he became one of the most successful producers in the UK in the 80s. His biggest claim to fame is shepherding a young Sade to two world-beating albums (her first two). Working together to find her unique sound made him the go-to guy for "sophistopop" and brought him a ton of success. He did the first few Everything But the Girl albums, the Fine Young Cannibals' debut, the first Colin Hay album and even scratched his rock itch by doing the third Big Country album. Oh, and he discovered Phoebe Bridgers and Cigarettes After Sex. And he was appointed CBE. And knighted. And, again, he's blind. You won't believe this one! www.robinmillar.org.uk/music www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Jan 25th Publish Date: Jan 24th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, January 25th and Happy 8th Birthday to Fine Young Cannibals guitarist Andy Cox. ***01.25.24 – BIRTHDAY – ANDY COX*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Family Raising Funds After Mother of 4 Killed in Cobb Kennesaw Man Accused of Vehicular Homicide Marietta Army Supply Store to Close After Almost 70 Years Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss economical snacking for kids. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Family Raising Funds After Mother of 4 Killed in Cobb In Marietta, the family of Melinda Jolly, a mother of four killed by an abusive boyfriend, is raising funds on GoFundMe for her three children and their new caretakers—Melinda's brother Tommy and his wife Stacey. Melinda moved to Georgia with her children after her husband's death in 2019. The fundraiser, organized by Melinda's sister Pamela, has raised over $20,000 of a $50,000 goal. Melinda was in an abusive relationship, and her family had requested welfare checks. Unfortunately, she was found dead during the last check. The alleged murderer, Charles Cook, had a history of endangering the children. Pamela fondly remembers Melinda as a kind and compassionate person. Those interested in donating can visit the [GoFundMe page](https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-melinda-jolly). STORY 2: Kennesaw Man Accused of Vehicular Homicide In Kennesaw, a 71-year-old man, Allan Craig Johnson, is accused of causing a fatal collision. Johnson, driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer, allegedly failed to yield to a Jeep Liberty driven by Randall Riggs while entering Dallas Highway. The collision resulted in Riggs suffering a fractured femur and multiple injuries. The medical examiner, Dr. Christopher Gulledge, opines that the injuries, captured on video, along with heart disease, contributed to Riggs' death. Johnson faces charges of second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to yield, both misdemeanors. He was arrested and released on $5,720 bond. STORY 3: Marietta Army Supply Store to Close After Almost 70 Years After nearly 70 years, Hodge Army Navy, Cobb's iconic military surplus store, is closing. Founded in 1955 by John W. Hodge, it initially sold decommissioned tools from Lockheed. Post-9/11, changes in military camouflage technology affected their business. Owner Paul Earls adapted by sourcing from veterans' estates and abandoned storage units. The store, a staple in the community, served diverse clientele for decades. The closure is attributed to the shift towards online shopping, making it challenging for brick-and-mortar stores. Hodge Army Navy provided unique services, including recreating uniforms for veterans' burials. The store's Marietta location gained fame as a filming location for shows like "Stranger Things." Hodge Army Navy will close its doors for good after almost 70 years in business. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – GCPS STORY 4: Flood Watch for Cobb Through Friday The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for north Georgia, including Cobb County, with an expected 2-4 inches of rain from Wednesday night to Friday night. An active weather pattern will bring multiple rounds of rainfall, with higher amounts possible in isolated areas. Rain chances are 80% on Wednesday, 90% on Thursday, and 70% on Friday. Motorists are advised to be cautious of standing water on roads due to potential flash flooding. Temperatures will be in the 60s through Saturday, with no freezing temperatures. The forecast indicates 61 on Wednesday, 68 on Thursday, 66 on Friday, and 67 on Saturday. STORY 5: Chattahoochee RiverLands Project Approved for $3M State Grant The Georgia Board of Natural Resources approved funding for 13 land conservation, restoration, and parks projects, including $3 million for the Chattahoochee RiverLands Regional Trailhead in Cobb. The funding will develop a park at the corner of Mableton Parkway and Discovery Boulevard. The Trust for Public Land envisions the RiverLands Gateway Park as a key access point for the region, with a neighborhood park feel. The project includes ecological restoration, green infrastructure, woodland restoration, a parking lot, restrooms, entry plaza, trail connections, kayak launch, and boat ramp. Over $21.4 million for these projects comes from the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Fund, approved by voters in 2018. The list now awaits final approval from Georgia House and Senate budget subcommittees. We'll be back in a moment. What's up, dudes? Duane and Scott from Tinsel Tunes and Randy Anthony from Hip Christmas are with me today to discuss the IRS Records 1987 promotional Christmas compilation and subsequent 1990 commercial release “Just in Time for Christmas.” Both albums are full of alternative artists with quirky, original Christmas songs. Some are very good. Others are great for background music at parties.I.R.S. Records was a major American record label founded by Miles Copeland—brother of Police drummer Stewart Copeland—Jay Boberg, and Carl Grasso in 1979. I.R.S. produced some of the most popular bands of the 1980s, and in particular was known for college rock, new wave and alternative rock artists, including R.E.M., The Go-Go's, Wall of Voodoo, and Fine Young Cannibals. Their catalog is pretty varied, and they used it to their advantage in 1987 for their “Just In Time For Christmas” promo album! The album came with a gatefold cardboard sleeve so record executives could pen warm wishes and season's greetings to each other. And, while the 1990 commercial reissue cassette and cd are readily available, the original ‘87 vinyl is pretty scarce. The album has 7 tracks: 6 originals and 1 contemporary cover of a classic hymn. The 1990 release has 13 tracks: that's 8 originals and 3 contemporary covers of classic hymns. TIMBUK3? Yep. Wall of Voodoo? They're there too. Stewart Copeland? The English Beat—or, if you live in England, the Beat—was one of the key bands of the late ‘70s/ early ‘80s British ska-punk scene. Guitarist/songwriter Dave Wakeling sang most of this interracial, socially conscious group's songs, with Ranking Roger toasting, and he takes us inside the making of the band's brilliant debut album, I Just Can't Stop It (out in an expanded edition for Record Store Day Black Friday). Wakeling tells how the bass-driven “Mirror in the Bathroom” came together and digs into the band's relationship with Specials, the Beat's breakup, and songs such as “Save It for Later” and “Tenderness,” the latter from Wakeling's and Ranking Roger's subsequent band, General Public. Was there a rivalry between General Public and Fine Young Cannibals, the other Beat spinoff band? How did Wakeling and Roger wind up fronting their own versions of the Beat on either side of the Atlantic? (Photo by Bryan Kremkau.)
David "Z" Rivkin is a Grammy-winning record producer, engineer, mixer, and writer who has an ability and knack for finding and developing independent, cutting-edge artists into hugely impactful stars. He's had his hands on some of the most iconic songs from the 80's – probably best-known for his long-standing collaborations with Prince, including hits like Purple Rain and Kiss – but he's also contributed to award-winning albums by Etta James, Billy Idol, and Bo Deans, to name a few. He produced the #1 single She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals; and he was also a member of Lipps, Inc, with whom he had a #1 hit with Funkytown. David is widely regarded of one of the original innovators of the signature “Minneapolis sound” that artists like Prince mastered, and just about everyone else tried to copy. In this episode, we cover a lot of ground including: Learning recording and engineering techniques by the seat of his pants out of necessity Meeting Prince and creating that instantly-recognizable, signature Minneapolis “80's sound” with drum machines and synthesizers The importance of experimentation in the studio How he made that hyper-pop snare sound on Fine Young Cannibals' She Drives Me Crazy" Using conscientious choices versus “happy accidents” while recording Prince's prolific songwriting, and how he'd write 30 songs to get 1 good one Must-have recording gear in the studio How he'll work in any musical genre except Dub Step The differences between analog and digital studios, and embracing the new technologies But beyond his musical achievements, David Z is also deeply committed to using his platform for noble causes. He candidly discusses how drug addiction has touched his family, and shares his dedication towards supporting diabetes and drug addiction services. So, join us for an inspiring journey through David's impressive discography, his personal challenges, and the impact he's made off-stage. Join us, and let's celebrate the enduring legacy of David Z, a true titan of the music industry!

Fred Armisen loves ska. He's brought it up on multiple Tonight Show appearances. Portlandia famously did the Bart Ska-mpson skit (with guest Matt Groening), and he performed a ska song in one Saturday Night Live sketch (with Bill Hader and Katy Perry). So, we brought Fred on the podcast and discussed all things ska. He had a lot to say on the topic. We talked about his love for 2 Tone ska bands (The Specials, The Selecter, Madness, English Beat, Bad Manners, The Bodysnatchers). But we also talked about the US ska bands he got to know in the 80s and 90s while he played drums in Chicago punk band Trenchmouth. We talked about Fishbone, Skankin' Pickle, Gangster Fun, Slapstick, Let's Go Bowling and more. We also talk about ska in Latin America, which he learned about during his multiple trips to Santiago, Chile, while filming Los Espookys. We talk about the larger movement of punk/New Wave bands that dabbled with ska XTC, The Clash, The Members, Joe Jackson) or stemmed from ska bands (Fun Boy Three, Fine Young Cannibals, General Public) and we talk lovingly about Chicago's famous indie venue, Fireside Bowl. I also tell Fred about a rumor I heard that Cap'n' Jazz were the first band to play Fireside and he votes on whether it was true or not! We also talk about how dumb band fights can get, the influencing role that Alan Myers (Devo), David Barbarossa (Bow Wow Wow), Topper Headon (The Clash) and Clem Burke (Blondie) had on his drumming style, and he takes a moment to mourn the loss of Specials lead singer Terry Hall, which hit him hard.Plus, we decide the perfect number of bands to have on a bill.
