Kelly Latimore on Icons, Advent and learning how to see

Kelly Latimore is an artist whose modern day Icons have an incredible ability to challenge where we see Christ in the world. Some of his most known works reimagine the Nativity in contexts of modern suffering: amongst the homeless in a tent city, seeking safety as refugees, huddling beneath the rubble in Palestine. At the beginning of the season of Advent this is a powerful conversation about the role of religious art, the places where God is located in our neighbourhoods, and the ways we might learn to see anew. Kelly shares some of his personal story, and how he began to experiment with Iconography. Will and Kelly discuss the reactions to some of these pieces, the tensions between tradition and progress and the way communities can use art to better represent the image of God in their midst. Connect with Kelly's work here: https://kellylatimoreicons.com/Want to reach out and let us know your thoughts or suggestions for the show? Red Letter Christians partnered with artist Kelly Latimore of @kellylatimoreicons to create this new icon, "Christ in the Rubble," which illustrates the prophetic message that if Jesus was born today, he would be born "under the rubble." Kelly wants his art to be a ‘holy pondering' - a process that potentially brings about a new way of seeing. Our hope is that this icon, "Christ in the Rubble" will create more dialogue among Christians in the United States during this holy season about the ways our beliefs and actions - or lack thereof - contribute to the violence we're currently witnessing in Gaza. How can we shape a culture of Christianity where love truly has no boundaries? How do we create a world where our poor, homeless, refugee, Palestinian Savior - born to a teenage mother and later condemned to death - would be cherished had he been born today.

The MSU Water Alliance brings together experts across the University to push the boundaries of discovery and find solutions to water-related challenges through research, education, and engagement with communities and industries. It's the Water Alliance for Teaching, Engagement and Research. Joan Rose is the Homer Nowlin Chair in Water Research at MSU. Jo Latimore is the director of the MSU Extension Center for Lakes and Streams. Amber Pearson is an associate professor in MSU's Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health. The trio discusses the alliance's vision, mission, and objectives. And they talk about some of the challenges and opportunities ahead for the world's water. Conversation Highlights: (0:44) – Rose describes her research interests of water quality and health. “I found out very quickly that when you're out in the field collecting water, there are people all around you that care about what you're doing and finding.” (1:54) – Latimore describes how the science of swimmer's itch in Higgins Lake played into her career and interest in water issues. “That connection between the science and being able to work with the public on conservation issues around lakes and streams has really driven my career.” (3:05) – Pearson describes her two streams of research. One is related to household water insecurity. “Yes, the safety of the water, but also having enough, affordable and reliable water.” (3:58) – What are some the key issues that make this alliance so important? (6:16) – What are the vision, mission, and objectives of the alliance? “The alliance is an amplifier and a connector and brings all the MSU expertise in this area together. MSU is uniquely positioned in this area to lead.” (11:25) – “We have a great opportunity to address this idea of the intersection between water, food, and health.”  (12:45) - The Michigan State University Extension perspective of “advancing outreach with science” and listening to Michiganders to learn of their issues. (14:03) – In Michigan, we're well positioned in two important ways.  (14:57) – The panel looks to the future.  (16:18) – How the alliance benefits students. (16:52) – The community is encouraged to come forward if they need their issues addressed. “Come forward and be part of the alliance. It's about engagement with the community.” (17:20) – How can each of us be a better steward of water? “The public doesn't really know where they get their water from. And they don't know where the water goes when they flush their toilet.” Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your show.

A St. Louis youth football coach is on the road to recovery after being shot four times by a disgruntled parent allegedly upset over his son's playing time. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed the details of the incident. Assistant coach and defensive coordinator Shaquille Latimore, 30, is now in critical but stable condition following the shooting at a North St. Louis park during the team's football practice on Tuesday evening. The assailant, identified as Daryl Clemmons, 43, reportedly opened fire after a heated argument between the two. "I didn't see his gun until it was already too late," Latimore shared from his hospital bed with the St. Louis Dispatch. "I ran, and he shot me in the back. I fell, and he shot me a couple more times." The incident unfolded at the St. Louis BadBoyz practice session, a city recreational league team consisting of children aged 9 and 10. Clemmons, who used to coach the same team before Latimore's tenure, allegedly taunted the injured coach while he was on the ground before other adults intervened. Fortunately, no children or other adults were injured in the shooting. Clemmons turned himself into the police and now faces charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He remains in custody. According to a St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office probable cause statement, the altercation originated from Clemmons' dissatisfaction with Latimore's decision not to start his son in the games. "After every game, he would try to critique me," Latimore stated. "After he shot me, he was like… 'I told you I was going to pop your (expletive).' I heard people running and screaming." Latimore sustained gunshot wounds to his back, leg, arm, and abdomen, with some bullets causing damage to internal organs. Despite the severity of the injuries, he is thankful to be alive, as confirmed by his mother, SeMiko Latimore. The incident sheds light on escalating harassment and violence directed at youth coaches and umpires. In a similar vein, a Florida man was arrested in May for sucker-punching an umpire at his son's baseball game, and last year, a youth softball umpire in Mississippi was punched in the face by a disgruntled mother. Latimore, a married father of five, had been armed when he arrived at the field, citing concerns about the area's safety. However, he handed the weapon to another adult before practice began. "I gave my gun to someone else to hold. I didn't want [Clemmons] to feel threatened," Latimore explained. He added that had he kept the gun on him, he would've defended himself. After receiving treatment at the hospital, the coach is now in stable condition, expressing confidence in his recovery. "I'm going to be OK," Latimore said. "It's more psychological than anything else." Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Gamify your fear, simplify your life, and improve your health! We can't do anything about our past, but we do have the power to design a better future for ourselves. Ed Latimore was raised by a single mother in a poverty-stricken, violence-filled neighborhood, but he didn't let this dictate the course of his life. Ed is proof that through hard work, determination, good decision making (and a little bit of luck), we are all capable of achieving greatness.  Meet Ed Latimore: Ed Latimore is a former professional heavyweight boxer, a competitive chess player, and a bestselling author. Ed's writing focuses on self-development, realizing your potential, and sobriety - all of which he approaches from his personal experience of overcoming poverty and addiction. Episode Highlights: Holding onto resentment won't improve your life. If you were raised in a broken home, don't blame anyone for that because you can't change it. Instead, focus on what you can change: your attitude, your environment, the people you spend your time with, and the way you treat others. [14:42] Age is just a number! If you look after your body and your mind, you can extend your mental and physical “prime” by many, many years. [33:13] The more organized you are, the more you can get done in less time. Stop wasting time because you don't have the organizational systems in place! [39:28] Before making decisions, consider the worst possible outcome and whether or not you are willing to suffer through it if it happens. [40:09] Simplify your life as much as possible. Don't be afraid to cut out the things (and the people) that are costing you your happiness. In 2021, Juneteenth—also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day—became the United States federal holiday, but many are still unaware of its origins and significance in American history. On this special episode of VOICES's Where Ya From? podcast, author and associate professor Dr. Carey Latimore shares with us the legacy of Juneteenth and the radical faith it still inspires today. Guest Bio: Carey H. Latimore IV serves as associate professor of history, co-director of the African American studies program at Trinity University, and associate pastor of a local church. Dr. Latimore and his wife reside in San Antonio, Texas. Notes & Quotes: “I think Black people in their faith were kind of presenting a mirror and a window into the essence of the gospels that many people have forgotten or left behind.” “On Juneteenth, people start talking about what we can be, what we can do. What we have done. It's an inspiring moment because we think of the possibilities.” “When one group becomes free, we all become freer.” “When those people came out of slavery at Juneteenth, we all came a little bit out of slavery. We all lost one link on that chain on our way towards a greater freedom, so that's why we celebrate.” Links Mentioned: Visit our website to sign up for emails. Dr. Latimore, author of “Unshakable Faith of Famous and Little Known African Americans from Colonial Times to the Present"  joins co-hosts Robbie Madison and Joey Svendsen to discuss the important outlooks and insights his book delivers on. In our diverse communities, churches, organizations and political spaces, [Black] history offers a window into the meaning of America  and the opportunity to reflect and marvel at, the strength of a people who refused to be destroyed and who fought and loved their way into our nation's story.  In this conversation, an unexpected theme is processed in real time and confirmed by Robbie and Dr. Latimore.  As African American men who value their blackness and maintain passion for  equality and social justice for all people,  the concept of blindly "cancelling a racist" for them seems lazy, rudimentary, and contrary to the Spirit of love represented by Jesus' words "Father, forgive,  for they know not.."  This new "cancelling trend" in our culture basically eliminates the chances of some thing Jesus seemed pretty adamant about all of us having: new beginnings and second chances, birthed by Grace.  The book also highlights a deeper, even heart-wrenching path of grace that many have painfully walked through.    Sometimes the unfairness of life (as it was for many of the saints discussed in his book) makes it is hard to keep going with soundness of mind, hope, and contentment in our hearts.  Dr. Latimore shares the stories of African Americans who found all three, even in the midst of grave injustices that personally destroyed the hopes of having what many of the more privileged were able to take for granted as "simple rights" and receiving "our due."  May our hearts be changed forever by the stories of our fellowmen and women who persevered while truly walking in the footsteps of Jesus.   A lesson for all mankind, especially in 2022.  Carey Latimore / Info / Facebook / Book Robbie Madison / Web / Instagram / Music Join us as a Patron.
