In the not-so-distant future, humanity is threatened with extinction by killer aliens. To reverse the trajectory, researchers are able to go back 30 years in the past to recruit humans to help change the course of fate. Despite the impressive set-up, there's a lot wrong with the movie (depending on who you ask). Although Sean and Jen found it irredeemable, Paul insisted that it's “one of the greatest libertarian movies of all time”. What TV show is the most perfectly cast? That question, posed to us by friend of the show Wes Coburn (@CoburnWesley), animates a passionate debate between Fanboy and Know-It-All as they each bring their respective Top Five Most Perfectly Cast TV Shows of All Time lists to the table. You might be able to guess a few of them that cracked our collective Top 10 Best TV Show Casts Ever rankings, but we're willing to wager there will be a few that surprise -- and maybe even anger -- you as well. Elsewhere, to do Know-It-All's buddy Chris Pratt a favor, Fanboy and Know-It-All dissect Amazon's "The Tomorrow War" and even swap roles with one another for a robust argument over whether or not this new summer sci-fi blockbuster has a message to sell. The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia
Fourth of July weekend is historically a big release weekend, and this weekend is no different, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. After 4 years a brand new Boss Baby movie is out. Did they use that extra time to make it not suck? Tomorrow war hit Amazon Prime this weekend. It has great action but will Rob find some issue with the time travel logic? (probably) And we got to check out the first episode of Fear Street: 1994 a throwback horror slasher film from the mind of RL Stein. This is the first of 3 with an odd release schedule, so we discuss that. Next week on Side B the Summer of 87 continues with Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds In Paradise and our question of the week. What are the best sequels that take their characters on vacation? PatreonThe Give Me Five Podcast is on Patreon. It was a long July 4th weekend and that meant a lot of movies. Erik Childress & Steve Prokopy may have whittled it down to an even dozen but that was still plenty for this epic review show. There is true crime (The Phantom), horror (Fear Street: Part 1 – 1984, Vicious Fun) and the fight over a heart (The God Committee). Steve looks in on Heidi Ewing's tender love story (I Carry You With Me) and Erik determines where the latest from Steven Soderbergh fits in his “retirement” resume (No Sudden Move). There is also Megan Fox handcuffed to a dead body (Till Death), a couple of standout Sundance films from both 2020 & 2021 (Zola, Summer of Soul) as well as variations of the wars in our country from the past (America: The Motion Picture), the present (The Forever Purge) and the future (The Tomorrow War). Strap in and see which are worthy of your time. 0:00 - Intro 2:37 - The Phantom 11:18 – Vicious Fun 19:36 - The God Committee 29:11 – I Carry You With Me 35:13 - No Sudden Move 45:43 – Summer of Soul 56:16 - Till Death 1:08:59 – America: The Motion Picture 1:21:26 – Fear Street: Part 1 – 1994 1:34:51 – Zola 1:48:29 – The Forever Purge 2:02:26 – The Tomorrow War 2:19:50 - Outro
On this compilation episode, we discuss great movie plots gone wrong, our fascination with serial killers, defunct TV shows in need of a movie reboot, and Amazon Prime's The Tomorrow War. First up are those defunct TV shows that are completely off-air and that we believe deserve a movie reboot. We've all seen this done a bazillion times – Baywatch, Spencer Confidential, countless others – what is it about long dead television shows that make feature films so appealing to reboot them? After our review of Chris Pratt's The Tomorrow War, we discuss our fascination with serial killers. True crime has exploded over the last few years between podcasts, Netflix series and documentaries, and films, but the societal obsession has always been there. What is it that makes us all so intrigued? Do we have a different response to fictional killers than we do to documentaries on real killers? Finally, we debate great movie plots that went wrong. These are ones we thought were great in concept, but the execution – whether it be in production or performances – made us a sad panda. We're looking at you, Star Wars prequels, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Lady in the Water to name a few. Discussed on this episode (0:00 – 39:35) Defunct TV Shows Needing A Movie Reboot (39:36 – 55:43) The Tomorrow War Review (55:44 – 1:30:35) Our Fascination With Serial Killers (1:30:36 - 2:01:00) Great Movie Plots Gone Wrong Troy Heinritz can also be heard on The Blacklist Exposed Please support The Hollywood Outsider and gain immediate access to bonus content, including Patreon exclusive podcast content like our Bad Movie Night by visiting Patreon.com/ TheHollywoodOutsider Be sure to join our Facebook Group Do your shopping via our Amazon Link!
